What Will It Take?

I've seen everyone speculate for years that the show is "circling the drain". It never seems to die........ What do you think would make TLC seriously end the show?

When other aspects of the media stop pandering to T.L.C. and ignore Kate and stop inviting her hither and yonder.
Also, when people who, not because they are fans, but because they like to see how ridiculous she is, stop noticing anything about Kate Gosselin.
Personally, I am done with this farce, it is like a never ending toothache.

Sadly it will probably end when someone gets physically injured, either on set or by some psycho stalker.

And even then, TLC will probably capitalize on it with, "A Very Special Episode."

I pray that I am wrong.

I figure TLC will cancel this show at the point where it stops generating a certain level of income for them. I don't know what that level might be, but TLC is in the business to make a profit. Any show stops making enough profit to satisfy the suits, then that show is gone. Sooner or later it will happen to Kate +8.

In my opinion it will take coming to the end of the contract, which ends in February 2012. (That date is from reading these blogs, I have no insider information) I really do think TLC is done with her and is just running out the contract.

It is also going to take people NOT tuning in!! Please do not add to her ratings and TLC will have no choice but to ax her. She will never carry a show on her own. She has no talent.

If you want to watch just for the snark factor, watch a repeat, do not support her exploitation of the kids!

I agree with the above poster; I think it will end in Feb. 2012 when the contract expires. That's my hope and prayer anyway.

Please keep in mind that contracts for reality shows can be canceled before the contract ends. The contract is to keep Kate and the kids available and normally does not obligate TLC to air a minimum number of shows. All TLC has to do is cancel the show if they want.

I think there is a minimum number of viewers that TLC will reach and that will be the end. If they are losing money airing episodes because they are below what they contracted with the advertisers, they will stop. It seems the low number is just way lower than I thought it was. :(

For her viewer numbers to drop to the hundreds. Or less.

The children have to refuse to film, that is what is would take, the children actually banding together and refusing to do anything while the camera is running.

Nothing else. Kate will continue this until the Fat Lady Sings.

There were around 12 episodes of Kate plus 8 last year (2010) and it appears there will be at least that many made for this year. I guess she has enough of a following, whatever those numbers might be, that it keeps the show on the air. Who knows, maybe it will be on until the tups become teenagers..if not a weekly series, it will probably continue with specials/updates. Kate doesn't appear to have had any other offers, so it seems she is staying with TLC for as long as they'll have her.

It's going to go the way of the Little People. It won't become profitable, and that will be that. TLC will allow Kart to "save face", and make up some sort of excuse. If the dating episode gets high numbers I can see TLC giving Kart a reality dating show ala the Brett Michaels kind of show. That was all fake too. All they need to do is cast twelve oddballs to fight it out for Kart.

When the kids are no longer cute: rowdy teenagers with acne, attitudes, and too many extracurricular activities. I think people still watch because the kids are little.

If TLC decides to finish out the current contract, legally Kate does not have a leg to stand on when she is sent packing from TLC. You know that if TLC backed out of the current contract, Kate would have a lawyer ready to take them on. Who needs that? It seems the path of least resistance would be to just let the woman slide for another 8 months, keep the show low-budget, and accept whatever ratings come. Then shut the door and be done with her. She can't do a thing, the contract was honored. She can tweet somebody else on her 12th pink iPhone to complain when she doesn't like fake accounts causing her grief.

TLC will be glad to see her go so they can start exploiting a whole new group of people.

+++++++++++++++

Yes, indeed. However, depending upon how that contract is written, if it states that TLC has the right to void that contract FOR ANY REASON, and AT ANY TIME, she would need a contract law attorney (a good one!) who could find a loophole in that contract. Otherwise, she would have no case. But, you're right. I can't imagine that TLC would want to be caught up in that mess of a lawsuit.

I agree with you about TLC just letting it run out. However, they are still filming, and this is not inexpensive for them. Kate said she was filming today, but did she say where? We know they didn't fund her trip to BHI this year, thus cutting costs on the filming there. So are they doing the minimum amount of filming the least expensive way, just to appease her? Could be!

Why is she doing these radio interviews? Are they in lieu of making appearances on national television? What is she promoting on the radio...new episodes?

You have to understand how reality TV contracts are written. TLC has the rights not Kate. First she'd have to find a lawyer willing to take the case which wouldn't be easy. Second, TLC would merely ask for dismissal or summary judgement and would get it. There would be no protracted litigation.

No matter who Kate thinks she is when TLC is ready to pull her off the air, they can and will.

I know Kate's got an inflated sense of her status and influence, but I trust she learned from what happened to Jon. Unless she wants to end up living the same lifestyle as him, she won't try to fight TLC.

My guess is when her contract is up. She's going to get more viewers then normal though now that's summer, I'm afraid, since nothing else is really on.

I don't think these new upcoming episodes will gather much interest.. Easter is long over with and the birthday episodes are so boring. I think after the TV interviews Kate did to promote the NYC episode, people were curious, and now people will forget about Kate Plus 8 again. People have a short attention span. Ratings will start to drop again steadily with a drop in promotion.

It would seem the 'sleeze' is what drew the watchers. People like to watch people do things they would not do or want to do themselves. And she is just dumb enough to be more than willing to oblige the scum that enjoys that.

RiseandShine said...

I'm beginning to think it'll never end. Birthdays, holidays, school events, specials, retrospectives, Kate's life, dates, proms, driving, college, weddings, babies....it'll go on and on for their entire collective lives.

jonandkatewho? said...

I think it will unfortunately struggle on and on as well.

Despite children who have graduated from being merely ordinary, and are now verging on annoying; despite a "mother" who is extremely unattractive and unpleasant, this show seems to go on and on and on...

I truly don't know what would end it unless Kate or one of the kids came to some harm or got into some kind of trouble. Even that might not stop the show, since when the two kids got expelled it did not end the show.

I suppose if those kids all banded together and refused to film as somebody suggested, it might end. But I don't believe those kids will do that. I'm sure they've had it drilled into their little heads that they "love filming and love the crew"...after hearing it over and over they probably believe it. They will have very confused feelings about the show one day. I feel for them.

I hope I'm wrong. I hope the ratings tank so badly that TLC has no choice, but they probably have lower rated shows that are still on tv.

It seems TLC is very possessive of the G8; they were once a cute medical miracle with two parents trying hard to care for them... With lots of vokunteered and paid help. But now we have children, not babies, who are still in kendergarten. They are not normal, even if the sanctuary of the school. Different rules, different days off of school from the rest, observed/paranoid ventures with friends of their choosing, with Kate/Steve/security always watching to make sure all
is safe to play hopscotch, etc.

Well, I think people have become bored of the tups, who remind me of marionettes, doing what they're being told to do...anything to keep that mom from freaking out They are maturing into average looking kids, with stunted personalities due to constant correction. Any time they seem to have fun, it seems to be encouraged by Kate and the crew. Cmon, no show store is that much fun.

It'll go away. The show is so difficult to watch. The moms makeover is so cheaply and obviously done that I can see why her doctor is hiding his face

The show should have left when there was still
Some goodwill there. Now kate has shown her true colors. The show is over. Just A matter of time. Giant flintstone a

I disagree, I think if there was a time when the kids became teenagers, and gathered the courage to rebel, I think almost everyone would watch.....TLC could probably milk that for at least a season, don't you think.

I agree that TLC holds the high cards here. A contract for "creative" work is very uneven. I would guess that this contract keeps KG from going elsewhere (and look at how energetically TLC enforced its rights when Jon made unapproved appearances), but it gives TLC total control over the creative product. They don't have to air what they've filmed, and they can stop filming whenever they want.

I also guess that TLC wants to hold onto the Gosselin monstrosity they have created. Kate+8 may cease to exist as a regular series, but TLC will want to string KG along so they can develop future specials or make KG appear on other TLC shows. JMO.

What is a show store?

I'm not sure I'm following your post - are you saying that Kate had plastic surgery and the doctor is hiding? We saw the doctor who performed the tummy tuck (Dr. Glassman). If she had any other plastic surgery done, a doctor isn't going to violate a patient's privacy by revealing it, even if it's the best he's ever done, or the worst he's ever done.

The kids all go to the same school, and therefore they do not have different days off, so this comment has me confused. When the younger ones were in church pre-school and the twins were attending their regular school, THEN they might have had different days off, but it's no longer true.

I suspect it will stop when they ruin the other 4 tups emotional development to the point where they are kicked out of school like Collin and Alexis.
and i bet you TLC will wipe its hands completely of any and all fall out! they will truly be DONE with them when they are DONE with them.
and, unfortunately they will broken beyond a fix.

What will it take for TLC to stop filming? Bottom line: Lack of viewers. Unfortunately, too many of us haters tune in to watch her make a fool of herself and add to the numbers. If we all made a pact to only view episodes a week after they were originally broadcast, it would have no affect on the numbers. I for one can no longer stand to watch her period.

It shouldn't be a surprise that Kate and TLC keep the 6 kids in high chairs and matching outfits. Their speech, actions and general behavior is more representative of that of a four year old child. I'm not talking about intelligence. They could all have decent IQ's, but it is their lack of socialization that suppresses any chance for their intelligence to be nurtured.

Yet It works for TLC. And it really works for the "I love Kate!" people (well, people and a lot of teenaged girls) who could care less about the healthy development of the Gosselin children.

Regardless of guilt trips laid on them by Kate, and demands from TLC as to how they should be and act, they are going to grow up. We'll see if the Sheeple are still interested when they get into an awkward stage. We can pretty much bet on TLC not being interested in them at that point.

And as for a show w/o the kids, surely TLC will figure out that placing an irritated Kate outside of her comfort zone in order to watch her act bitchy and cry and scream isn't funny - she isn't funny - in the least.

Agreed. I just watched three seconds of one of the boys flipping around on the sofa, arms flailing, saying something that couldn't be understood; watched the little girls squirming on the sofa - behavior of four-year-olds, most definitely NOT seven-year-olds. Very immature for that age.

Well, the birthday show isn't on here in my time zone until 11pm tonight. I don't think it could be any plainer that TLC isn't really promoting them at all any more.

The Easter show and Kate's night on the town will show here. I wouldn't watch it if I wanted to. I sure don't want to. I am going to bed now. Night all...

My interpretation of that post is that the kids are pulled out of school for filming while other children are in school. The Gosselins have more "out of school" time than their classmates. I don't think the reference was Gosselin vs. Gosselin schedule.

At their school, teachers will do everything possible to help a child who was absent due to illness or family emergency. They will stay late, whatever it takes to help a student make up lost time. However, if a child misses school for things like family vacation or making money to support their mother, then it is up to the teachers whether they will help out or not. Probably a lot will. Certainly they make school packets with assignments for the child to do each day. That in itself is a lot of extra work on the teacher's shoulders. But they are not required to stay late or do handsprings to get a child back up to speed with the rest of the class.

Teachers do a better job when kids are in school, attentive and are
fully supported by family in their academic endeavors. It's hardest to teach a child who isn't there or whose mother thinks trips to Australia to make money trump
what the teachers are trying to do.

Can you tell I am a huge supporter of teachers? They do such an amazing job with so little to work with in so many school districts.
Hats off to good teachers! And hats off to parents who value what the teachers are doing! And hats off to kids who do their best.

And Kate will end up living the same lifestyle as Jon. I guarantee at some point she will have to sell the house.

Neither one of them are money smart. You can't support 8 kids and the kind of expenses that she has(a 9K a month mortgage).

Had she been smart, she could have been set. But she spends like no tommorrow.

She is not a real celebrity.

One this show is done, she is done.

Just like the Roloffs.

And even real celebrities lose houses.

Jose Canseco said "I never thought the money would stop coming in" as he stood outside his CA mansion which he was locked out of.

The only people who get counted for tv ratings are the people who agree to use Nielsen diaries or agree to have a Nielsen device attached to their TV. Most households in the US are not Nielsen households so we can watch what ever we want and not worry about it being counted towards the ratings of a show.

The comment about the kids having different days off from school may have been regarding the gosselins and the 'rest' of the kids in school. she takes them out of school any time she wants for vacations and holidays, and then they get the days off with the rest of the kids.

It would be interesting to know for sure if the two kids 'really' did get to go back to that school as she inferred somewhere. And it will be more interesting to see if all six are considered ready for first grade and ,if not, if she will try to hold them all back as she has done before.

The globe-trotting didn't work; the stay-at-home shopping trips, birthday parties, getting ready for school doesn't work. Nobody wants to see videos of someone else's vacations or setting up chicken coops.

TLC tried the vacations, and they tried the stay-at-home thing. Seems the only thing that got any ratings, although still low, was Kate being licked in a club.

What will work? Seems like Jon was the draw in this whole thing, and without him adding to the family dynamics, the show holds little interest except for the tweens and teens and delusional adults who, for some reason, have obsessive crushes on this woman and either want to be like her, have a mother like her, or grow up to be like her.

Pretty pathetic, isn't it?

MB said...

It will take people to stop talking about her. Even if it's just to criticize it still brings attention to her and the family.

When no one cares enough to even snark about her anymore she will go away.

I do not watch the show and do not understand why, but that's true.

I think the show will probably be around in some fashion until all the kids are well into their teen years. If it turns out by then that they have no real hobbies or sports, field trips alone won't be enough to keep the show going at that time. I would give it at least 5 more years. As for Kate getting some kind of gig on her own, it's doubtful, probably would have already happened if she herself had any real talent.

Jenny said...

I don't agree that the show will continue another five years (!). Maybe, just maybe, TLC will do an annual special once or twice after they dump the show, but that's about it. The show is pretty boring already --- how will the sextuplets turning 8 while in 1st grade make it more interesting? How will watching Mady and Cara enter adolescence and becoming even more glum and/or angry on camera make viewers tune in? How about watching Kate grow oranger while her teeth begin to glow in the dark? Welllll, that might get a few viewers, just for the laughs.

It is dying a very slow death. When they have her getting her foot licked by a man in his 50s with a pink sweater and gold chains in a NY bar, I think we are seeing the last of the Great Katie Kreider.

She will continue to do stupid, degrading things, just so she can get some publicity.

Her ratings aren't good. This is Summer and soon Fall arrives and new shoes are lined up for all those stations.

There is a reality show being pitched every 30 seconds by someone looking to make money.

They will commit murder to be on a reality show. That is the name of TV right now.

Amy too said...

Kate with 25 bachelors, all in their 50s. That will be the last show. TLC will try to marry her off, anything else she asks, she won't get, but she asked Jaimie for that during the Birthday party for the tups.

She should be getting those kids home schooled during the Summer, so they can catch up and be able to maintain, not run around being filmed. This is sad.

Sad, when you think of how much some of those children do not know and they will be 8 in first grade.

She is stupid, she is dumb, she is so self absorbed that it is difficult to understand a mother not wanted what is best for her children. Does she want to have to pull 3 out of school this year. Last year it was 2. This doesn't get better, it gets worse.

Tell one of the tups they are wrong and they react with anger.

The example they see at home is the reason. Their mother has a terrible temper, did we forget her relationship with Jon?
