TLC April 2011 Upfront New Shows Not Much Kate

From Futon Critic.

Fox Philly speculates on cancellation.

Have we reached the end of the road?  The blog polls suggest that we are there or nearly there if the readers are correct.

Kate has surprised but before, but is there really anywhere left that she hasn't already been or already tried to go (except back to true reality of course).

If talent or even charisma were the determining factors, we could blessedly look forward to an imminent and permanent disappearance of Kate Gosselin, since she is so sorely lacking on both fronts.

But we're not that lucky.

Tragically, if we are to gauge what American viewers like these days, it seems drama and dysfunction are the keys to ratings.

It's hard to imagine any further possible depth to our current dumbing down in America. With our bevy of 'reality' characters including the Kardashians, the Gosselins (specifically KATE), the Duggars, the Housewives Of..., Sister Wives, currently winning viewership, it's hard to be optimistic about having seen the last of the likes of Kate Gosselin.

Couple that sad observation with Kate Gosselin's own pathological need for attention and celebrity, & I'd be willing to bet the farm that we have a ways to go before we will be able to turn on our tv's without K8G popping up somewhere, sometime.

It won't surprise me a bit to see her show up to wrestle Tonya Harding or any one of the Kardashians or maybe even Sarah Palin, so long as a camera is rolling.

Past is prologue: there will always be some durned fool willing to film people like Kate Gosselin doing some ridiculous and obnoxious thing and, since Kate has long-ago traded away her integrity, honor, and dignity, she will be happy to comply with any and all concepts, no matter how demeaning.

Buckeye, I honestly wouldn't care if they'd just leave the children to their childhoods.

I wouldn't watch, either, but that's just me.

Ohio Buckeye - I agree with you on many fronts. I guess human nature has always been this way -- willing and eager to tune in to watch "junk" or worse. Roman Coliseum - prisoners thrown in to fight lions for the amusement of the masses?

The unpleasant truth is that people will tune in to watch manufactured drama, wealthy spoiled people leading shallow pointless lives, and even tune in to the likes of Kate Gosselin with her shrill, screeching voice, clear sense of entitlement, and ever more miserable children.

The silver lining is that people have relatively short attention spans. Even high quality shows lose viewers over time, simply because it becomes too familiar and thus boring. If for no other reason, that's how we can know for sure that Kate Plus 8 will eventually come to an end.

But Kate is addicted to the camera and the attention/perks. I do think she'll do just about anything to be on television. I really hope the children can be left out of any future attempts - but I see that the younger Khardashian girls are now having to step up to the plate and help bring home the family bacon by selling themselves as sexy young teens. In her own way, Mama Khardiashian is just as bad as Kate Gosselin when it comes to pimping out her kids.

NE Psych: I agree: Getting the reality tv kids completely and permanently OFF camera to enjoy their childhood in peace and anonymity would be a great start!

We are not out of the woods yet. TLC has a Kate Plus 8 marathon on May 2. It goes from 7 pm to 2 am. It shows all of the current "sessions" shows and the Phillie episode. I wonder if its a way to drum up more viewers.

She may twit all she wants about her series not being cancelled, but it does not show up at all on TLCs 2011-2012 line up. That to me is more telling than the twit twittering.

Jane in CA: Completely agree about Matriarch Kardashian. A mom who: a) encourages her daughter to sell her sexuality via Playboy and then b) wants to horn in and showcase her own bod, well, let's just say I can imagine Kate Gosselin heading into that territory in the future. Anything and I do mean ANYTHING to keep the spotlight fixed on her.

Bruce Jenner and Kris Kardashian seem as oddly matched as Jon & Kate, so it is unsurprising that the Kardashians, like the Gosselins, were offered and were only too happy to accept the offer to play out their family's dysfunction for viewer entertainment.

MoGal said...

hannah, I don't think her Twitter is a reliable source of information. She doesn't even know when her show will be aired. Her Twitter posts just show what an arrogant, ignorant fool she is.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

And her kids were not expelled; Jon took all of her money so Kate couldn't pay the bills; everyone is doing "WONDERFULLY" after the divorce..

The list goes on and on. Bottom line: Kate LIES. Even the most liked and loved stars from the past eventually fade into oblivion - Kate never fit into this category. Not many people LIKE KATE. 98% of the comments I read on other websites after she appears on a morning/talk show are NEGATIVE.

Perhaps the show is not officially cancelled yet, but the marathon will probably not attract new viewers and if her ratings continue to decline, it will be cancelled eventually.

If TLC and advertisers want to finance Kate's BIG FUN THINGS ON THE WAY, then they are downright STUPID.

If I could find one ounce of kindness or gratitude in Kate, I would probably be happy for her, but she is a wretched woman inside and out!! She dug her own grave with her attitude on DWTS, Alaska, and her own show treating everyone so badly.

It won't be long before Kate is a thing of the past. What does the future hold? ALL of the Gosselin children writing books about MOMMY DEAREST....

From Kate's twitter: "Neither is cancelled."

..............

What does "neither" mean? Is she claiming that Twist of Kate is still in the works and will air at some point?

There have been no signs of continued filming for that particular show, besides the one time they took Kate to a restaurant somewhere and got some filming done. Wasn't that like a year ago by now? Seems to me that it's unlikely TLC is letting that footage languish for months, getting dustier by the day, if they still intend to fashion some sort of show out of it.

The official source would be a posting on TLC's website, or as others have pointed out, inclusion in TLC's listing of their fall line up, etc. If TLC is not canceling the show, they clearly aren't enthused about continuing it either.

Yup. And remember, Susan Lucci didn't know that her show ("All My Children") had been cancelled either, until it was announced to the public.

The time they filmed the "Twist of Kate" episode in the restaurant, was so long ago, it was before she had the extensions put in. You mean to tell me that they would put something "new" on TV with Kate and the reverse mullet? hahahah gross

Agreed. My only thought is, is the show not in the line up because they're still trying to claim the guise of specials to pathetically keep under the radar & they're going to string things along until they've squeezed every last penny out that they can get. It was a dead horse some time ago & yet they're still trying to push it on a public who is showing by their numbers that they no longer want it.

Does anyone know if Kate could qualify for unemployment or welfare if the show does get cancelled?

We all know it's a matter of time, and Kate will claim she's penniless even after making $250K an episode.

I don't know how the system works, so maybe someone out there does.

winsomeone said...

"Does anyone know if Kate could qualify for unemployment or welfare if the show does get cancelled?"

Regular workers and their employers pay into unemployment insurance. Wonder if Kate belongs to the actor's guild? If so, since that is union, maybe they have something for unemployed members? Otherwise, doubt she gets anything when her show is done...not from the state anyway.

Kate lies said...

Reality performers are not actors and do not meet the requirements to join actors guilds such as AFTRA or SAG. It isn't a regular job so it's highly doubtful any unemployment is going to be payable.

so sick of her said...

I don't think Kate can get unemployment. Or welfare or food stamps. Kate is probably getting other income, from the books, DVD, pictures and JK8 show in other countries. The amount you get from unemployment is not much(and no Kate you don't get a check for each kid, you only get one(for you)). It is based on, what was contributed to unemployment insurance while you were working and every state is a little different. She has money, I don't think that TLC contribute to Unemployment insurance, you don't contribute you don't get any. And besides you have to look for work and keep a list.

readerlady said...

I highly doubt that Khate would be eligible for unemployment compensation. As far as belonging to any of the Actor's Unions - I know that you have to have a job in an Equity production to join Actor's Equity, and I think the same applies to SAG. She could conceivably belong to AFTRA, since she has had a gig or 2 as an "interviewer". She could possibly qualify for food stamps or some form of welfare eventually, but she'd have to meet the means tests. Can you see her divulging the amounts and locations of all the money she has squirreled away? IMO, the most likely scenario is that, when K+8 is cancelled, she'll go after Jon for more child support, as if he isn't already paying enough.

Khate can't but maybe the kids can since they were the ones working...

Belinda said...

I do not think Kate would qualify for unemployment, although I suppose anything is possible. I'm sure she would not qualify for Food Stamps; although the value of one's primary residence and primary car are not counted, one must claim every cent of income from every source, and show bank account balances. Since Kate likely earns some kind of payments etc. from the sale of taped episodes and occasional talk-show appearances, among other things such as CHILD SUPPORT, she would be required to show and prove ALL income. Somehow I don't think she'd qualify for food stamps. Or any other form of government assistance, although I wouldn't put it past her to TRY.

Terrible, terrible what the television industry has started with, at first, delving into families' lives.

Granted several of these families needed money, so the cameras were welcome, but then after a year or so and the children were no longer year old babies but becoming little people/toddlers; TLC should have had the decency to stop filming potty training/out of control parents screaming as though this is "right in your face life" and we should all get use to it.

Now, what we see are families that have been destroyed by TLC. The Gosselin Family is one of the last to be damaged beyond help as their driven mother will stop at nothing, absolutely nothing, even endangering her children to stay on TV and stay in the limelight and become that television career person that everyone would want. Problem?

You look at Kate, pretending she is composed on an interview show, lying.

You look at the 8 children and you see pure sadness, wandering around behind her, the performing circus act. Trying to do what she the mother wants.

Problem: The children have their own thinking process, their own difficulties with life, divorce, filming, trying to be normal school students, wanting to be just a family and then they are thrown in front of that camera and the children look stunned, trying to do/say/act and failing as these are young people, almost 7 yrs of age. Two are young ladies approaching 11. A world torn between growing and maturing and being like their classmates, having friends and missing Daddy, being mini Moms to their younger siblings, whom they shield, hide, nurture. An overbearing mother trying to keep them all so much younger.

You cannot not stop the maturing process of a 7 yr old any more than you can stop the 11 yr olds from maturing.

Kate Gosselin is a very ill woman who should never, never had children as she has used them as a form of "bringing in the bread and milk" and not allowed them to just be.

Anything I hear in the future of 8 of them, I will be kind. I will not ever point a finger at one of those children and say "so what did you expect after what your mother did to you".....no, I will say, "start over, every time you fail, start over and keep doing that throughout your life, because no matter what you were told by your mother, none of us are perfect, not many of us get it right in life, but we do start over, so you The Gosselin children know that there is a blue sky for you out there and you will be free of cameras and violations of your rights to just be"

With the utmost respect and love to 8 very innocent children used and abused by their mother and TLC.

Any continuation of filming of these children allowed by this selfish, mean, hateful woman I say "May you find peace somewhere, far from these children as they age into teenage years and find a way to live knowing that you ruined lives for the most unimportant things in life such as what was important to your physical appearance. Saddest of all, is that you will never, ever be accepted by any of us who have looked into Kate Gosselin and seen the devil.

Capslock askend "Does anyone know if Kate could qualify for unemployment or welfare if the show does get cancelled?"

No way could she get welfare. She would have to sell her cars and clean out her savings account. She would have to drive a car worth less than $1500 or so, depending on the PA criteria. She would have to be truly poor, with no assets. She's on contract with TLC, it's not like she got laid off, so I don't see unemployment in her future either.
I guess she will have to do what other actors do when their show runs out. She'll have to cut her budget and trim back on tanning, nails, and other stuff.

She's gone. She's finished. Nobody cares anymore.

I haven't been boycotting the show-I just haven't been watching.
So it is after not-seeing many episodes, that I happened upon a marathon today.
The difference in Kate is startling. You know how when you're used to seeing someone every day, and then you don't see them for a looooong time, and changes are way more noticeable?
Its like that for me.
If the "new" shows were put on-the-air, (and I really don't think they would be), and someone who had never seen Kate & Co. before tuned-in, well-it is so obvious that she is very sick.
I guess it is sad, but then knowing that she has sold-out her children's future-I don't feel sorry for her.
BUT-the main thing that stands-out to me is how very very depressed this woman is.
She's phoning it in in the deadest possible way.
At first I wondered if she were just being extra-careful measuring her words because she does have trouble with common grammar.
-So you can see those wheels turning. She doesn't say a word without running it through her filter, and yet the mistakes happen.
Then I thought it was massive phoniness.
She has a filter for that too. So many filters that I'm sure she had another one that screens to make sure that no one would ever guess what she's really thinking.
What does come through loud and clear in these Australia episodes is that she is extremely depressed.
And no I don't have much sympathy because the reason for the depression is because deep-down she knows that she is hated and that is standing in the way of her goals. And she can't do anything about it because she doesn't understand why everyone isn't falling for her act anymore.
I know that's unkind of me-not to feel sorry for someone who is clearly suffering from a serious depression, but frankly, she deserves it.

You said it. Kate is phoning it in. She is no more interested in the places they go than I am to watch her show. It is plain she
has burned herself out but still wants the cash and notoriety.

I read TLC's line-up. Extreme Christmas Trees? Sounds like a parody of reality tv on SNL or the old Mad TV.

Gypsyville? Offensive, as the prefered term is traveller or Romani. A colleague of mine has studied and lived with this group for years, and there is no way a TLC crew is going to get to film real travellers. Whoever they got to talk is a fake or a liar (or a complete outcast and who would be genuinely interesting if interviewed by a talented journalist (in short supply at TLC)

I'm telling you, I'm writing scripts for "Extreme Knitting,"Extreme Needlepoint"and "Extreme Backyard Birdwatching" as soon as I sign off here. (I'm not making fun of these hobbies, since they are mine, just at TLC'S twisted attempts to inject drama into every task, experience, and human interaction)

Here's a dumb question I know nothing about.

Can a person purchase unemployment insurance, like you can purchase
life insurance or long term care insurance out of your own pocket?
You know, something to tide you over for a year or so until you find more work? Is there such a thing for individuals?

That would certainly seem like a smart move for someone in as unsecured a profession as television shows. You know, we ALL have to have that blanket of insurance just in case. If the company doesn't offer it, we need to protect ourselves.

Insurance is something you pray you never, ever use -- but you make darn sure you have it anyway.

Ampersmom said...

fidosmommy- no an individual can not purchase the unemployment insurance like they can with life insurance. It is a much different "animal" that is involved here. Unemployment insurance is only paid for by an employer, a part of it is based on the state rates and another part on the federal rates. I know this from working in the accounting world. Kate and the kids are contract employees and in NC, unless there is a clause in the contract stating otherwise, they would not be covered for unemployment.
One note: I know the NC rules, PA may be different.
But I do know, per federal guidelines, employees can not purchase this insurance, only employers.

You are going to be surprised at how easy this answer actually is - it is called savings. I grew up with a self-employed Dad, and married a self-employed hubby. You learn early on that you are your own keeper, and you have to be strong and make sure you stick to a plan.

I worked for a global company that had employees all over the continental US. The people were hired as contracted employees for a set period of time (usually six to nine month assignments). All the contracted employees were eligible for unemployment at the end of their contract (I had to handle all that paperwork for the company). The only times when they were not eligible was if the company had terminated their contract for some violation of their contracts. So depending on how her contract is stated, she may be eligible for it. I doubt it though, TLC wouldn't want to have to pay her unemployment checks and would probably put something on her file that would stop her from being able to collect.

Kate, will be lucky to get health insurance for her kids. I'm sure she is covered by TLC, but if they cancel the show and do not have cobra, good luck Kate. Cause, if any of the kids, including Kate have a pre-existing condition, you will find that no insurance company will insure you, until 2014. I know cause my cobra is done. So unless I get a job soon, I have no insurance. There is welfare insurance, but you have to be 6 months without insurance and a lot of Doctors & hospitals do not accept that insurance. Walgreens & Walmart have a drug program, so if you need you presciptions, you can get the same price. There is no way Kate will get that, maybe some of her kids, but not all.

fidosmommy said...

Some states have state funded health insurance for those who can't purchase insurance. The state where I live has it. I have a very good friend who is on the program, and she has medications that cost something like $5,000 every 3 months. She pays a few dollars for a copay. A doctor's visit is something like $10.00.

Not every state has this.

My tv is showing Quints by Surprise on sunday for the next 3 weeks. No Kate. It shows the next Kate episode on Memorial day weekend. Maybe she will lose more viewers without a regular time slot.

Kate would certainly not qualify for any government programs. If the show got cancelled and she has not saved wisely, she might end up like Sinbad. He lost his properties and and had to liqudate his assests and is back to starting over(this is all been shown on his new tv show). He is not homeless but took a big step down in lifestyle(no maids , one car etc) and has no savings to fall back on. If Kate didn't save money or pay off the house, I c ould see her ending up back in an E-town size house, being a real working single mom. I just have a hard time believeing that she could actually blow all the money they have made and have no solid assest like the house paid off or significant savings to fallback on. Instead of asking for all the free trips, she should have asked for an episode with Suze Orman.

Tamara said...

I can totally believe she's blown every dime. I can also believe that. some lawyer has put away money, for her not the kids. I'd be interested to see how much more she'll ask from Jon and no doubt disappointed in how much the courts will grant her.

Is the house totally paid for? Any idea if the kids have any trusts set up, especially that are completely hands off to the parents? It's sad that Jon didn't fight harder to have a financial guardian of sorts assigned to the 10 after he pulled out of the show. They will have nothing left. And while millions can last quite a while for an intelligent investor and spender, even with 10 kids, we have seen over and over that neither Khate or Jon have this intelligence. We have also seen celebs loose hundreds of millions very quickly.

Selling/downsizing sounds good, but may not be possible said...

Selling her mine-all-mine mansion might not be as easy as she hopes. Depending on her mortgage, she may very well be underwater. She'll definitely get way less than they paid for the house.....

Seems they bought at or near the peak of the market.

Just one more example of how 'life is not fair' for Kart. Downsizing is going to HURT REAL BAD. Not only money-wise but her ego is going to take a huge hit.

Having to sell and downsize will be a very public admission that her 'career in show biz' failed.

I predict that she will hang in there like nothing is wrong, then 'suddenly' start tweeting and interviewing that she is going back to a normal life for the kids.

She will be hoping that approach will bring her public sympathy and continuing exposure.

I bet, also, that she and Purseboy are madly shopping her to other networks, and using the twitter nonsense to validate their claims that she is beloved by her throngs of fans.

I am hoping that whatever the rumor is about "cancellation announcement next week" is actually true.

As for TLC giving her a good-bye special - I doubt TLC would make the effort and spend the $$ on a dead show, when they have so many new and fresh concepts in place to replace her. I don't think advertisers would buy ad time.

Oh, and I can't forget the assumed truth that she will not go down without a fight. I have no doubt that she will some how, some way find a way to dump a lot of blame on the network, as in "TLC made me do it".

---------

Last April, PA DOL ruled that "It said that at least 15 percent of the gross proceeds, due to the children, must be placed in trust funds until they reach the age of 18 or unless needed for their safety, education, welfare or health.
"Laurie Goldberg, a spokeswoman for Discovery Talent Services and TLC, said Wednesday the trust was established in November and that the amount placed in trust exceeds the 15 percent level."

It's not completely hands-off for the parents. She can dip into the fund for tuition costs, safety (home security?), and probably whatever else she can justify as being for their "welfare."
