This is the best they can put together with what they have. More segregation of kids by gender, ho hum.

Well, at least Jon is in this episode. I'll watch it when it hits utube.

This should be better than Kate yapping the entire time as she did in the last 2+ episodes.

But honestly, I feel that Jon should have allowed Kate +8 to continue and watch it tank from the sideline.

A cobbled together show, no doubt.
Using up whatever footage they have, picking up some pieces off the editing room floor to fill in some blanks, and LOTS and LOTS of time of Kate chatting us up from the couch. That's their creative filler now. Kate blathering on.

I won't watch, but I'm tempted to see if anybody at TLC has been reading this blog and realizing some of the slip-ups they've made.
There may be a little backpedaling in some of the remaining episodes.

I'll have to read that here, though. Good luck, recapper!

And girls are neeeeevvver interested in bottle rockets or making stuff blow up.

Do I have to roll my eyes in the opposite direction, in the same way that men's and women's shirts button on opposite sides?

Perhaps we should all take our boys AND girls out to the front yard and do a mentos/diet coke extravaganza on Monday at 9, EST.

What is it with her and the gender stereotypes? Oh, yeah, control over and restriction of imagination in her children.

How can you guys say that this isn't a realistic portrayal of an average American family?? I mean, come on, doesn't every family (especially in these horrific economic times)take 6-7 really fancy expensive vacations every year where they stay at thousand-dollars-a-night resorts and only eat at gourment restaurants while shopping at really expensive boutiques?? Why all the criticism of this great average American couple who is just trying their very bestest best in raising their children????

God, I hope this nightmare ends soon! Oh, Lucy, I LOVED your comment. Made me laugh so hard. To quote you, "B-O-R-I-N-G!!! Feel sorry for whoever has been asked to watch it and write the recap. Drink heavily first...it may ease the pain." PRICELESS!! Thanks for the laugh!!

emma said...

This show is not about how a couple raises 8 children. It's about a family of 10 who gets FREE vacations over and over and over again. Why haven't the news shows asked KON to define what it is they exactly do in terms of a job? Kate claims that she's super busy with "business stuff." Um, what business stuff would that be dear? How to score your next FREE vacation deal? Where or where in this mess is the "reality" portion? TLC, please explain this to us!!!

To be honest, Im kinda excited to see the butterfly house...I love butterflies and I picture it being beautiful....but for the rest of this "realist reality show"...Im not too excited.

Atleast this show it coming to an end, which has been our common goal on this site for years now... I wish there was someway we could throw a party.

Im proud of Jon for standing up, no matter what his true motives were, canceling the show, and getting his kids off TV.

He has been so brutally honest about how much TLC pays for (wardrobe, private chef, gardening, etc....I saw the interview on Entertainment Tonight last week), and now TLC is suing him, and I know they have to have some damn good shark like lawyers who Im afraid are going to eat him alive.

I just dont understand, like alot of you, why they are suing Jon for talking to the media for payment, when KATE has been the one who has talked to more talk shows, magazines (People magazine is probably on her speed dial), and whatever other news medial outlet would let her tell her sob story. Why arent they also going after Kate?

Any ideas?

she is evil said...

I think TLC isn't going after Kate because she is that rarest of beasts: a mother who doesn't protect her young. She will do ANYTHING to keep this lame ass show going, to the detriment of her children and their father. She'd probably eat her kids if TLC asked her to.

Tami said...

If I want to see butterfly houses I can go to the St. Louis zoo butterfly house. You don't have to travel across the country. I'm sure there is a closer one she can visit. Any excuse to go to Florida yet again. I'll bet she is so angry and in such a panic over just the thought that she might have to end this gravy train soon. No more free trips. Horrors! First she'll try to ruin Jon anyway she can to get back at him.

Did anyone else hear the absolutely ridiculous promo for this episode?

"With only a limited number of episodes left, Jon and Kate spend some time with those who matter most."

What?! :| Oh, I forgot. They only spend time with the kids when the cameras are around. Guess those kids won't be seeing much of mommy and daddy when the cameras stop rolling.

Seriously, this was the most asinine promo for a show I've ever heard. It's not like the world is ending. They can exist as a family without cameras. Seems even TLC thinks opposite.

rural mom said...

Jon killed this show the minute he refused to sit on the couch with Kate or be filmed with her. TLC then did their best to keep this family's drama in the limelight. Jon wasn't going public with their broken marriage, TLC paid the paps to follow him around. They put a body guard on him so they'd know where to send the phototogs. And then they put Kate on all the morning shows and LKL to wipe at her eyes and pretend to answer questions about the scandal. People tuned into the show in huge numbers to see the sparks fly. But none did. Kate continued on with the free trips and obvious sponsorship plugs and Jon just had his home access time filmed. TLC kept trying to reward Kate and punish Jon to push him into a corner and it didn't work. Kate will never have a hope in hell of having a tv career unless TLC can manufacture up some life drama for her - the single parent sketch failed miserably, perhaps they might introduce a sick parent she will pretend to reunite with and take care of?

It is very simple. When Jon does interviews he tells viewers what is going on behind the scenes. When Kate does an interview she ummmmssss and dabs her eyes and has yet to answer a question. She is in no way harmful to TLC's image.

JFaye said...

Since Kate obviously is only comfortable around girls, Jon should be custodial parent of the boys so they don't get any more screwed up than they already are. What is playing out with this family and TLC is the realities of America's fascination with other people's lives, love of the almighty dollar, and disregard for these children's well-being. I suspect that when the dust settles, Cara, Maddy, Joel, Colin, Aeden, Hannah, Leah and Alexis will be unable to function as self-sufficient adults and the 'sheeple' will be supporting them for the rest of their lives and paying for counseling.

I believe the reason the last few episodes are mostly "travelling" (not at the house) episodes is because they are under investigation. I'm sure there's a loophole of some sort. Too bad they can't erase the last 4 years, oops, I mean SEASONS. I'm betting when the dust settles on all this divorce drama, the child labour issues will be made public.

I agree with all of the above. And since they keep running the intro of "with only a few episodes left".........you all can only begin to imagine what that last actual episode will be like.

Only in my wildest dreams can I imagine what they'll pull with that one. I'm sure Ms. mom-of-the-year in all her crocodile tear glory....with clips from all her past favorite episodes. Probably an hour long special tribute to the best single-mom-in-the-world

stopthemadness said...

I sort of took this to mean that rather than running around media whoring themselves they would spend some time with their kids. They can't say Jon will drop the bimbos for a couple hours since they are still trying to pretend that it's the family aspect rather than the train wreck aspect that interests people. But neither of them seems to be spending any time with those that matter most.

Kate is that rare mother with little maternal instinct, you got it bang on. You would not see a cat abandon her kittens or a bear leave her cub to the wolves but yet all she seems to care about is how they LOOK, and contrlling whatever aspect of them that she bumps up against at the moment- her yelling about riding the bus with them to lay down the law and then telling them how to eat at school, really turned me off. How about preparing them to succeed in Kindergarten, b*tch, whch is your JOB. How about setting an example for how to be a gracious, loving warm person?

I don't care what happens to her. I don't care what she does next. I won't be tuning into see kate overreact to whatever else they have in the butterfly house apart from the insects. Kate finds a crowfoot next to her eye. Kate discovers dust under the couch. Kate tells Joel how to breathe.

I think I can be sure to know without watching that it'll be something really stupid and over the top as a reaction to something a normal person would find interesting or benign. I think Bonaducci is right, Kate is done.

I just hope and pray that the ratings are down so there really is no reason for TLC to pressure Jon to give in and allow the children to be exploited for as long as Kate and TLC want to do so.

Let's see...this episode should go something like this:

Kate explains once again about needing time away with the little girls. Jon explains Kate is away with the girls and he's staying at home with the boys and the twins.

We see Kate and the girls at the butterfly museum, minus any other visitors. Kate looks at the camera crew screeching as the butterflies fly near her.

Jon and the boys set up their water rockets outside (TLC crew may or may not have helped); boys have fun and squeal with glee.

Jon is interviewed on the couch, relating what a cool and awesome time he and the boys had and how it's hard on him to be away from his kids.

Kate is interviewed on the couch, telling us for the one thousandth time how hard this is on her but she's doing it for HER kids. Her eyes may or may not mist up.

The end.

-----------------------------------
I disagree. Jon wants his boys to be big, strong, tough men and he ridicules and makes fun of them if they don't meet his standard of what a boy/man should be.

Pictures in one of this week's magazines show him swinging Joel by one arm. Joel is clearly hurt, upset and crying. Replace Kate with Jon in this picture and there would be thousands of posts on what a terrible mother she is, but with Jon, nothing.

I'm sure Jon loves his kids, but he could use some parenting classes too.

I disagree. It appears that he doesn't want them growing up to be made to feel icky, gross and disgusting -- inferior to the girls who are all sugar and spice and everything nice. That's how they have been treated all of their lives. I'm just not sure he knows exactly how to instill that in them.

So for the past 5 or so episodes.. Kate takes the kids out for a nice trip and Jon is again at home with the kids.

And the episode with Kate at home, was pretty much all Kate.

I think Jon should take the kids on his custody day to see the Statue of Liberty. And show the kids that they can still go on trips, (not weekly), but once in a while, without having the TLC crew following them.

And if there are any paps there with cameras, Jon should just say, Well Kate said they couldn't go see the Statue of Liberty because I stopped the filming, so I'm here with the kids spending quality time with them with no TLC crew members.

Well, with all our heads put together, we can all guess exactly how this episode will turn out before it even hits the air. Let's see. Kate will start things off by explaining the sudden bright idea she had to take the little girls to a butterfly house. Yes, that's right--it was HER idea, folks!!! To translate, the nice people at TLC wrote it down on a piece of paper for Kate to read from - kind of like, you know, a script - and figured that as long as they will pulling in the ratings, she could pass it off as her own idea. After about ten minutes of walking the audience through all that, she will babble on and on about how important it is for her to do these separate "supermom" trips with her kids so she can focus on what that group wants to do - and the way she talks, you'd think she invented the concept all by herself. Good for you, Kate. High five on that! She'll whine a little about how much harder life is for the little ones because of Daddy, and she has to do things fifty times bigger because she has only half the time she used to have with them. Of course, she can stomach shoving them off to the nanny while she travels the country and laments about her horribly difficult life as a single mom, but why even go there? It's not like nobody has caught on to it already.

P.S. Is this part of the same vacation where she took the boys to the USSR thing and the little girls to the tea room? TLC's methods of putting the episodes in air-date order sure is interesting, isn't it? I'm sure that with Kate willing to plop herself on the couch and repeat herself a few dozen more times, they will squeeze out at least five more episodes from that "vacation".

stopthemadness said...

When the kids were allowed to make a choice for themeslves, the one time they were able to do that, was around skiing. Cara, Joel, Leah and Collin I think, decided to go and Aaden stayed home with Hannah, Leah and Mady.

their inclinations don't fall along gender based lines, Cara and Mady are very different from each other. I wonder if M&C were given the option of going to the FL vacation and decided to stay home as there would be no cameras?? Or just because they miss relaxing with Dad instead of beign apraded around so mom can squeal for the camera and make faces.

Such an actress.

The wish program for cancer children aren't even able to give children in need this much because places would rather donate to jon & kat 8. Sick!
Kate hates staying home is the problem, she's making up for the childhood she didn't have. Remember the episodes talking about never being on a plane or traveling? Money isn't everything! Stability is what these kids need most. I do not like TLC anymore, they do not respect and uphold what family, morals, and values.

When Kate says, "Is my hair standing up?" or whatever her line was, the girls look like they don't know how to take it. They have "deer in the headlights" looks. And there is dead silence.

I'm thinking that they're thinking if they say yes, will they get in trouble? And if they say no, will they get in trouble?

And if that's a butterfly in her hair, you KNOW it's envisioning getting caught in the nightmare of dead possum and never getting out, screaming, "Help me! Help me!" and all the other butterflies saying, "Sorry, you're on your own, Bert! We ain't going NEAR that b*tch!"

And then that woman standing there gives a fake laugh to encourage the girls to laugh, like Kate is the funniest person in the world.

Ick.

I am really shocked and amazed that this blog has failed to recognize the significance of this balloon boy incident and its effect on reality shows like Jon and kate?? The sheriff has implicated the media outlets for perpetuating this incident and the implication of blurring "entertainment with news". Is this not what is happening with the Gosselins? All the news channels are using the Gosselins as EXAMPLES of this incident. GWOP is not seizing the moment and I do not understand why. It makes perfect sense that this Gosselin debacle is a publicity stunt to line the pockets of all involved. After this incident I am convinced that is the case. We cannot rely on the news outlets to capitalize on this. They are making money...they are all part of the problem. Of course nobody is going to ask Kate the tough questions...it's all part of the game.

I had my suspicions before but now I'm 100% sure this is what's going on. It took an act of stupidity by a greedy parent and the courage of a sherriff to reveal the hoax. I hope somebody out there has the courage to crack this wide open and then maybe we can get this reality show garbage done with. Yet again, a perfect example of why Hollywood needs to go away.

I think Jon and Kate plus 8 was probably an inspiration for the balloon boy family. They also have cute half asian kids. With one Asian spouse and a white spouse. To answer another poster's question this was another trip they took in the summer. (Not part of the memorial day NC thing). She went away with the little girls a couple of days after returning from shooting the "Dude ranch" with the boys. And yes, this is when she went ballistic in a cheesecake factory near boca raton.

Obviously, shows there is no sequencing to these episodes related to real time sequence.

Well I'm not suggesting you specifically do anything...but I am shocked that the discussion is still the same "attack Kate" and not about how this story could blow wide open the entire reality TV situation. We shouldn't be sitting here dissecting every situation and getting upset at assumptions. That is EXACTLY what they want us to do. We should be discussing how the media perpetuates and feeds this stuff.

When a media outlet pays a family to conduct a stunt like this...that scared a lot of people...that caused them to lie to their children and teach their children to lie to the public...all for fame and money. If that does not have TLC and Kate Gosselin all over it I don't know what does.

MomofFour said...

Okay...I guess I'm not making my point.

There is nothing different between the balloon boy incident...and the Gosselins. The Gosselins faked a happy family. They produced a product to sell to us. We bought it. We really thought they were a happy family...that all the things were true in their show. (Well GWOP did not but that's another story). We got hooked by their gimmick...Kate attacking Jon. That pulled everybody in. We had to watch to see what she would do or say next. They held a fake -redo on their wedding vows. Next thing ya know...GASP.. Divorce!!! Highest ratings in cable television. Now we have a nasty divorce. TLC is suing...(Telling the media before they even serve the papers)..all the lawyers on TV Jon and Kate duel fights....the show is shut down...

Sorry...I'm not buying it anymore. I think this entire thing is a scam. The media outlets make money. The Gosselins make money. They were never a happy family. Kevin and Jodi said that from the get-go. What difference is it to them if they were going to get divorced anyway then might as well milk it for what they can get, right?

I think this is being played out by TLC and the Gosselins...and the more outrageous the better. I hope the balloon boy incident cracks that egg open and shows people what it is Hollywood is doing. That is what needs to happen. I just do not believe this is all playing out the way it is in real life. I think it's all Hollywood.

The Toronto Globe and Mail ran a story on the Heene family and the balloon hoax. One of the comments on that story made me laugh, and I thought I would share it with you.

"So here's a fix I thought of. Heane makes a bigger balloon(Fox pays for it.) and puts the Kate and Jon Gosselin family and anyone associated with that cadre of idiots, plus his own crew, in the balloon and they sail off over the sea. A reality TV crew is paid to watch it go and fans can tune in to see the balloon not return, ever. The balloon ends up settling in Iran. The people disembark and terrify the Iranian government so badly that they change their ways and become a symbol of peace and prosperity. Kate terrifies the Taliban so badly that they flee into the mountains and vow to take up a life of playing chess and worshipping Karl Largerfeld(who has actually been dead for many years. It's only his collar that is alive.)"

I agree, it's all just so disgusting and unethical. The saddest part is, in both families, the children are going to grow up thinking lying for money and seeking fame at any cost is a normal, acceptable way to live.

ideas on why jon is being sued and not kate? maybe because tlc worked with the media to get kate out there, to control her image, so that the show could go on. thereby making these appreances authorized. my guess is that the appearances were carefully scprited by tlc and the script adhered to by Kate. she did what tlc wanted, continue the multi-million dollar show even when her spouse wanted the show to end, and she was rewarded with money and no law suit. and an ugly divorce and miserable exploited children. i wonder...

Well, I watched. The Kate part should have been called: Let's see Kate over react yet again. I feel bad for thoses girls to have a mother who wants the spot light all to herself. She had to dress them alike, then yell at them not to get food on their clothes. Kates segments were longer than Jons. I loved Jon's interaction with his kids, they were having a good time. But where was Maddie? Poor Jon was made to say at the beginning of his part that Kate was in Florida with the little girls. (did anyone catch that?)I was clapping when the bird bit Kate, I was hopeing one of them would poop on her as well. Then they showed whats for next weeks. Kate answers Questions. It should be: the world according Kate or Kate that hard struggling poor mom boohoo! Then they showed the into the woods episode. I have to say I really hate Kate, and Jon was so PO at her, when he was explaining the walk, Kate was acting so bord, and when he corrected her about you were not there, she jumped back at him, of: why am I stealing your spot light. I wanted to reach into the TV an smack her one. What that man put up with. If I had to pick a parent from the 2 of them it would be Jon, he has such a wonderful time with them, doesn't care they get dirty or wear the same clothes, just as long as they are being kids. I hope in the future that Jon gets to spend more time with them, even if it means he has his GF there. Cause remember Kate hates the outdoors, getting dirty. She wants dolls.

Entertainment Weekly says "It was a dismayingly Kate-centric episode. "
"Even the balloon ride became less about the hot-air ride than about whether Kate, in high heels and a short skirt, could get into the balloon basket without giving the girls and the balloon men an accidental anatomy lesson.

To her credit, she did refer to herself as an “idiot” for dressing this way in the marshes of Florida, but even that was a bit disingenuous: In the old days of Jon & Kate (we old fans remember, don’t we?), Kate wore sweatpants and baggy slacks. These days, Kate always has to appear on-camera in body-hugging garb, no matter how inconvenient it is for everyone."

I agree that she did say she was an idiot for wearing the outfit and heels that she did but I cannot believe she would wear that anywhere. That shirt was soooo lowcut and the skirt was so short. As a mother, that should never have been a part of her wardrobe. I have no problems with mothers dressing sexy and keeping up with themselves. However, there is a difference between sexy and slutty and that outfit was pretty slutty (in my opinion).

Kate said of course she was wearing heels because she only packs heels when she travels. ROLL MY EYES!!!! I always travel with a comfortable pair of shoes in case I have to do a lot of walking because sometimes being practical is a lot more appealing than looking good in a vain way.

You know, I think it was better when they took each child out individually on their own little adventure for a day, instead of this herd mentality, gender segregated (yes I know kate & TLC not the places themselves) stuff.

Yes, there were problems with those epi's, Kate not going on the boys trips & so on, but at least it was for that ONE child & for a day they got to feel like it was all about them(& the camera crew), but still I believe it was better. It was also simpler & something many families can afford to do & therefore identify with.

For those who watched. was there any sign of a spa attached to the butterfly house in this episode?

The girls hated the hot air balloon ride (and they expressed that several times). They were tired, very hot and they couldn't even see over the top of the basket! The whole point of a hot air balloon ride is the view. Kate is the only one who could see anything scenic. All the girls could see was Kate's obnoxious face she was making to coincide with the sound of the hot air balloon (marginally humorous the first time she did it, ridiculously annoying the second, third, fourth, and fifth time). Kate brags about the wonderful life experiences her children are getting because of the show. I could come up with a hundred inexpensive things to do with my daughter within 25 miles of my house that would probably be more enjoyable for her than that miserable viewless hot air balloon ride.

Better living through pharmacology! If Kate can relax in a hot-air balloon as her five-year-old daughters peer over the edge, it's because she's got a bottomless supply of valium or some other trankie at her disposal.

Pick up your tickets, walk with your family and all of their carry on bags (don't check your bags, its an added fee now), stand in lines for a horrific amount of time getting through security(no first class here), then, oh yes here comes the good part, just.start.walking. in your hooker heels you just keep walking until you get to your gate, no tram for you Kate, because there was a mechanical malfunction. How stupid can people be that believe she is a hands on mom arriving for a ballon flight in heels? Someone drove her there and carried her to the launch I suppose? I can't take it. I watched the second showing of the Kate show and I cannot believe that Kate essentially trashed a hot air balloon ride. Most people dream of flying and being in a balloom is kinda similar. Instead of focusing on the positive, she stayed in her head and did not encourage her girls to be excited about having an incredible view of the earth below them. she could have asked the guide to help point out particular places, i.e. houses, schools, parking lots, trees, lakes, etc. so the kids could have been interested. Seriously, why even bother going on such a trip if you are going to act bored. Woman makes me ill.

Didn't watch. The Vanity Fair article was the turning point for me. It is easy to despise the caricature of Kate that TLC has created. She abuses her husband and her kids, who wouldn't tune in to see how far she goes with that. She is a pathological liar, same reason to tune in. But to spend an afternoon with Kate, as this writer did, and to feel her dislike for Kate oozing from the pages, not because Kate was mean or rude or abusive... no, Kate was just dull, stupid, vacuuous, there was nothing to Kate, no personality, no spark, no warmth, no interest. She is boring. She offers nothing. She contributes nothing. And once you start disliking a person for that, it is easy to dismiss them. I can well imagine Kate wearing hooker clothes and climbing into a hot air balloon, she needs those props to generate interest. The children are most definately props. The pattern here is that anyone who has to engage solely with Kate quickly gets turned off. This is the second open letter format we've now read about what a dolt Kate is. Stick a fork in Kate, she is done.

I didn't watch last night, but read Z's recap this morning and I have to say, AN HOUR OF KATE NEXT WEEK???? Holy Crap! TLC what is your thinking? An 8 minute segment on the Today show went from poor-broke-oh-woe-is-me-no-food-no-house to some fancy crap ring she wants. How the heck is anyone going to be able to stand to listen to her for an entire hour? I feel for who has the recap responsibilities for next week.

http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/zontv/2009/10/jon_kate_gosselin_tlc_kate_ans.html

Z made me giggle today, and I can't wait for the recap, especially about her making faces in the hot air balloon.

Another episode entirely devoted to Khate. She HAS to have eight birds on her, she IS terrified of bugs and runs around like a maniac and who goes in a hotair balloon wearing a miniskirt and high heels.
Khate of course. The kids are used as props to set her up and work off of her...ridiculous.

Loved the outfit she was wearing for the balloon ride. Wow - what a looker or was it hooker? Sorry I couldn't resist. I was always told either low cut shirt or short skirt never both at the same time.

At least she did a great job coordinating the little girl's clothes with the butterfly outing. She was probably so proud of herself.

Forget Monday's night's episode of "Jon & Kate Plus 8," titled "Butterflies and Water Rockets." It was a paste-up job of rubber bands and glue -- TLC trying to squeeze an episode out of what it has left now that Jon Gosselin has shut down filming. The 30-minute show had no movement, no arc, no emotion.

Preach it, David Z!

Tell me people, thoses of you that have kids, do you go off to places, away from your home to try and impress your kids? knowing how expensive theses trips are or do you look for local things and /or do you do stuff at home? I think that Jon is perfectly happy being at home doing stuff with the kids, cause you know why, no media(sure there are media about, but it's a more controlled enviroment), where the kids can be kids and get dirty and not have to be dressed as dolls. Kate is tryin to impress her kids(all most buying them)tryin to out do Jon. Kate is no parent(IMO)A parent is someone who likes to spend time with ones children, not buy them things or take them on trips to impress them. Even on theses trips Kate is not being a mother. It makes me laugh, she does not think it dangerous to take them in a hot air balloon, but thought it dangerous to Jon taking them on rides on a trackter(the kids were having fun, with her they were not)at the beginning of Jon part he had to say Kate was in Florida with the little girls(what was that about). Can't wait to hear next week: the Lying world according to Kate(rolling eyes).

I'm sorry but that butterfly place was disgusting. Butterflies are bad enough, but understandable because they are pretty and little girls like them. But the BIRDS and the INSECTS. So disgusting. Beyond words. I hate to say it, but I would have been outside with Kate. I just got goosebumps and a chill typing about them.

As far as Kate's outfit, well definitely not appropriate, but I don't think the short jean skirt and halter top are intrinsically slutty. I would say she looks like a 12 or 13 year old girl, on whom it would probably look innocent. When you throw that outfit on a woman, especially a woman with a butt, boobs, and a shape, it becomes ridiculous. Both Jon and Kate want to go back 10 years... guess what d-bags, you can't. At least Kate is limiting her youthful choices to her wardrobe. All her other poor decisions seem to be driven by something deeper... like craziness. I must say, it's a pretty close call, but I would rather see Kate in 'tween attire than Jon in Ed Hardy. I think. I could end up regretting that statement when I see her next outlandish getup. Anything is better than those jeans with the tigers on the back pockets, right?

This episode had no flow to it. It was beyond boring (yet again). Last week's stair toss was at least a WTF moment, but this episode was so lame.

I got the feeling the hot air balloon ride was just for show. I suspect that they were only airborne for about 15 minutes or less. In Florida the rates for such rides are starting at $129 (I guess a person). A typical ride takes an hour. She said it was 7 o clock and they were done. Well, they only got in the balloon at 6:45? It really did not look like they went very far and she herself said they cut it short.

Khate actually said she only packs high heels when she travels? Yikes! I NEVER pack high heels when I travel, unless it's expressly for a very dressy occasion. Otherwise, it's comfortable walking shoes and onee pair of dressy low heeled pumps in case we go out to dinner somewhere more upscale than Dennys. And why the charade of taking the little girls on a hot air balloon? No one in their right mind would expect them to be able to see over the edge of the gondola. I'm 5' tall, and I had to stand on tiptoes to see when I went up in one (only on a tether, darn it!). I'm glad to hear a bird bit Khate. Hope it's handlers gave it an extra ration of sunflowerseeds as a reward LOL. Glad I didn't watch! HIMYM and Castle, with House and Lie to Me on the DVR got my loyalty last night.

****

I am a hands-on mom, and try to keep my kids engaged and stimulated. However, that rarely involves elaborate trips like the ones that K takes her kids on! I am not on any sort of a mission to impress my kids, nor do I go around telling everyone how much they "deserve" to have certain experiences. For us, local parks are a regular outing, as are the library story hours and puppet shows. We have a membership to the local zoo and go there frequently...they have amazing walking paths and a wonderful playground. We also have a membership to the childrens' science museum... Swimming lessons twice a week... Occasional trips to the Children's theater for a play... Free symphony concerts in the park...ice skating at the local rink...rollerblading or riding scooters on the paved path around the lake...soccer practice, swim team, Brownies, Cub scouts, etc.

This doesn't include the regular "down time" we have at home and as part of our normal days that involves playing in the yard, drawing on the driveway with chalk, cooking together (yes, even my 3-year-old participates), going to the grocery store together, trips to the dollar store with one dollar in each child's hand, etc.

Basically, we are relatively comfortable financially, but I would never want my children to want or expect such elaborate, over-the-top vacations or experiences. I mean, how in the world do you keep that up? What kind of expectations are you creating? Do things have to get more and more elaborate as they get older? I think these kids are getting set up to be discontent, ungrateful and spoiled unless something changes. Just because I can afford to do extravagant things for my kids doesn't mean it's the best thing for them.

Two clueless idiots said...

And another thing, it doesn't even sound like this elaborate activity was even interesting or appropriate for these 5-year-old girls! They couldn't even see over the side of the basket??? What the heck is up with that??? (Didn't watch, but I'm going on what I read here...) If you're gonna do the over the top, stupidly wasteful and elaborate activities, at least choose something that's developmentally appropriate. I'm guessing that people would be much more inclined to tune in and watch the kids happy, engaged and involved in an activity rather than bored and uninterested. I'm not programming expert, TLC, but that's my hunch...

And yes, I do remember how stupidly Kate overreacted to being put in the lift on the "going green" episode. You're telling me that now she went up in a hot air balloon? I guess TLC thinks their audience is made up of idiots with selective amnesia!

I thought my eyes were going to roll out of my head when Khate made a big deal out of having EIGHT birds sitting on her arms. She has EIGHT KIDS, people! Just in case you forgot. It gets more & more obvious that this woman's entire idenity is based on the fact that she has 8 kids. I wonder if she will ever stop playing the 8card.

Equally as nauseating was her declaration, for the second week in a row, that her kids are SO well-adjusted. Again we hear about how they didn't shed a tear when they started junior K, blah, blah, blah. Of course she credits that to the fact that they have been able to have such wonderful experiences (aka- free trips) via the show.

You do realize that both of them spend time with their children outside of filming, right? Just because Kate hasn't been shown with the twins in the last few episodes doesn't mean that she hasn't spent time with them "other than picking them up at school."

*****

If this show is so "real", and if Kate does spend quality time with Mady and Cara, how come we never get to see it? If we are going to be peeking in on this family anyway, we would like to at least see that all children are equally valued to their mother. As it stands, it looks like either she doesn't want to be around them or they don't want to be around her.

Frankly, I think Mady and Cara make Kate look bad at parenting. They will say what's on their minds and Kate's attitude toward them seems to be Don't Care Kate.
She all but ignores them, and that does not help her image one bit.

Truth be told, I don't believe Kate spends much time with any of them when the cameras are not rolling. I have a gut feeling that once the cameras turn off so does mommyhood.

She just looks plain uncomfortable with all of them, IMO, but most especially her twins.

Kate + hot air balloon---how appropriate!
Didn't watch, haven't watched, except sporadically for the past year. She just irritates me so much--not worth it. Also, I don't want to contribute to the exploitation of the kids. They (the children) are not like zoo animals (or butterflies in a butterfly house, for that matter).
I remember back in one of the early episodes, when Jon and Kate took the twins to California, didn't she refuse to go up some hill/steps because she was afraid of heights? She made a big deal about it and one of the twins (Mady?) seemed to "absorb" her mother's fears.

My kids would rather stay home than travel! We aren't wealthy, but can afford a vacation most summers. We've discussed everything from the grand canyon to NYC to Paris, and the bottom line is my kids don't want to leave their friends, their activities, their horse and dogs for more than a few days. For the past 3 summers, we've gone to Disney for a long weekend (4 days). I'd love to go somewhere new but am thrilled the kids are happy at home. Oh, and I would never travel with one kid and not the other unless it was a special circumstance. What's the point to that?

Rose said...

I was surprised to hear the little girls openly admit that they didn't enjoy the hot air balloon ride, but I'm sure Jon got a lot of heat for his unsuccessful fishing trip with the kids a few episodes ago, so this proves that Kate isn't as "with it" as she and several others may think when it comes to planning fun stuff for the children.

Is it just me, or did Kate act like she barely knew those little girls? She acted as if she was a nanny shuffling the little ones along on a summer outing, and they were just kind of following her like you would follow your baby-sitter. There was no warmth, no sincerity, and certainly none of that "all about the kids" stuff. Kate hated every second of that trip and only forced herself to do it for the sake of publicity, attention drawn to herself, and just another example she can use to show how she is raising such "well-rounded" and "adaptable" kids who get exposed to so many different "life experiences." That's transparency if I ever saw it. Jon's list of mistakes is pretty long, too, but you know what? Kate has at LEAST ten times more to work with than him, in terms of having activities for the kids laid out for her, and he at least did something with them that I could picture a real dad doing with his children. He blew up an inflatable rocket in the backyard and had some old-fashioned fun with his kids, without asking anyone to pay for it or keep the kids out of his hair while he sat down on a couch and praised himself for his amazing parenting skills. Despite everything else, Jon is not a liar, and what you see is who he is. He doesn't hide it or try to apologize for it, and in this case, he looked like a more genuine parent than Kate ever could. You won't find Kate planning anything simple or private with her children. Coupled with the monsters at TLC, she wouldn't be happy unless they found an elaborate brand name somewhere that would take the free publicity and supply all the free entertainment for the kids without asking for a penny in return.

For the sake of the children alone, when they do these smaller group trips, I would love to see Kate take them out for lunch at McDonalds, bring them to the library to pick out books, or to one of those one-dollar movie theaters. Maybe the show would have a shot at resurrecting itself if she did what REAL moms do to have a fun afternoon with their kids on a real-world budget. My favorite memories with my mom include feeding the ducks and having picnics at the park, picking out videos to rent at the video store, getting Dairy Queen after school, and sometimes even getting to pick out something at Toys 'R Us if I was doing a good job in school. It's too bad nobody cares about giving the Gosselin children a life like that...because as soon as they're old enough, they'll be able to go out and have their own special life experiences, but they won't ever, EVER know what it was like having a normal childhood that was all their own, not a staged one that was created for the entertainment of strangers, the financial gain of a television network, and the advancement of Mommy's career. Just for a minute, think about what it would be like not to have that. Even if the show dies tomorrow, Kate will have future projects to keep herself in the limelight, but the kids will be the ones to truly lose out, just as it's always been for them.

We have 2 grandsons now and last thursday, we took them to the pumpkin patch. Nee Nee (that's my special grandma name) slid down the fireman pole to catch the kids that came down it. My pants got all wet and we were all laughing. You do not have to spend a lot of money to make memories.

Kind of like she seemed to do at all of her speaking engagements. It will be a completely "made up" hour. All lies and stories completely scripted in order to spin a story.

Then Jon and Boobs McGee Gosselin get brought up. Barbara says that Kate claims she does the show only to support her kids. Barbara says if she's going to have so many kids then why not find other avenues for income. UM HELLO!? WHY DIDN'T YOU ASK HER THAT WHEN SHE WAS ON YOUR SHOW?! All of a sudden they are anti-Kate?
