September 21, Farm to Table

Kate takes the kids on a special trip to visit Henry, an Amish farmer and friend who has often supplied their family with fresh produce. After a satisfying and fresh organic meal together, it's time a family game night -- but will everyone play nicely?

OMG, TLC is really trying to guide this Titanic back to its roots of organic food and family fun down on the farm.

The cow is already out of the barn on this one, TLC. Give it up and break out the lifeboats.

Real Old Order Amish don't allow themselves to be photographed or videotaped. Most of PA Dutch Amish are Old Order I think, so who knows what this family is.

How cute. Kate plays with her own kids. Everybody sems to be having fun.

Then the cameras red light goes off and TLC calls it a day.

And immediately Kate tells the kids to stuff a PollyPocket in their pieholes and if they're thirsty, to drink the tears of fame....as she packs it all up and heads back to NY, leaving them with the nanny.

Here's what I'm dying to know...Are the Goaselins visiting their "friend" Henry for free organic produce? Would this cow be greedy and shameless enough to accept free food from a man who lives so simply? We'll see.... I may be proven a cynical bitch after tomorrow's episode, but so far this season, Kate has gotten something free

To TLC:

One does not need to be a rocket scientist to see that J&K+8 has run its course.

Viewers are dropping like flies so the ratings are dismal, yet for some reason TLC is choosing to throw away good money after bad to keep this train wreck on the tracks even though the family derailed months ago.

IT IS TIME TO PULL THE PLUG ON THIS SHOW. SERIOUSLY.
PLEASE.
FOR THE SAKE OF THE CHILDREN.
DO THE RIGHT THING!

I used to work at a big box chain store in a town with a large Amish community in Ohio. They were Old Order, referred to us as Yankees, and most of the older adults spoke mostly German, not English. No electricity, no phones, not even a state ID to use when paying by check at the store. But let me tell you, for all their Old Order ways, the younger members (40 and younger) certainly were no strangers to technology. They bought disposable cameras like there was going to be a shortage, dropped tons of them off to be developed, and used any technology they could run off a battery. The young Amish men would have CD players hooked up in the buggies, the late teen girls who were unmarried were our biggest shop lifters (make up, cheap jewelry, bras and underwear). From the promo I saw, the Amish farmer looked to be younger. Even if he is Old Order, it wouldn't surprise me that he allowed himself to be taped. The younger members just aren't as strict with the rules as the older adults are.

I will be interested in how the kids act at the farm. For all the ways the Amish have adapted, their views on children's behavior haven't changed. You would never see an Amish child acting the way the Gosselin kids act most places. Will they be on their best behavior or act like screaming wild children like they usually do? Oh, and nice write up TLC. the write up makes it sound like Kate goes there all the time, but from the commercial it looks like she doesn't have any clue what kind of produce the man will have. So which is it?

I'm sure, being Amish and all, those people will love having all those cameras and fancy vehicles on their property. [Note sarcasm]

Is this the cow episode, where the bodyguard was photographed walking behind the wagon? Maybe they sent the dogs back to bring home their new organic cow. Kate will milk the poor cow until it drops dead and then she'll use it on her new cooking show, Illogical Mom.

Well, actually, it kind of makes sense: they're probably the only people who haven't seen Kate on TV, and are unaware of what a snake she is.

What's next? Face-painting with the aborigines of Australia?

Ohmygoodness. I wonder what the dear Amish farmer thought of Miss Kate. If he's married, when she left he probably went in and hugged his wife and said "Thank you for not being like that woman!"

There are many different churches within the Amish denomination, with a huge variety in the strictness of their rules. All the way up to the Beachy Amish, who drive cars and sometimes allow internet use.

AZ Mom said...

Was flipping channels and say a commercial for the show this week it seems that K8 was told to play with the kids...too bad it's only for the cameras. You said it all Go Kathy Griffin when the red light goes off the kids are pushed away to wait for their next "take".

NJ Native said...

Yes cheap Cow I think the Gosselins are visiting their old "friend" Henery. In the commercial you can hear one of the tups recite...Henery growed it, mommy cooked it and we ate it. I say recited because it is a totally scripted line.

There is a order of the Amish called the "Beachy Amish". I work with some in Abbeville, SC. They drive cars (just without chrome), shop in stores, will use computer (just not the internet), listen to tapes (no tv) and interact with larger society. They just believe in living simply.

Because they have love in their hearts for everyone. They reached out with compassion to the family of the killer who murdered 10 Amish school children three years ago. That's the Amish way. I live among them. They are known as "The Gentle People."

This is the third week I haven't watched or Tivo'd the show. I am proud to say I haven't watched TLC in over a week so I haven't seen the "Farm to Table" promo.

TLC has made it easier than I thought to do away with J&K plus 8 by filming things away and or outside of the house.

I guess I was attracted to how this family of 10 lived their life. I liked it when Kate made batches of soup and monkey munch for the family. I enjoyed just watching them "live life" in the house in Elizabethtown. It was so much more real than all these "field trip" and vacations things they are doing now.
I like the simpler things in life & I was drawn to the show for that reason.

Kate has moved on to the status of a celebrity. She no longer does the mundane things of a middle class mom and wife. She is in the loop now where she always wanted to be.
Because of this the show has no more attraction.
It is empty and void of any heartwarming moments any more.
Now I see Kate playing for the camera's. She is all smiles and the children couldn't look less happy.

Thanks TLC... you have changed the show so much I no longer have to struggle with my "should I watch or shouldn't I" dilemma.
It isn't even a question any longer.
I don't like the show,I won't be watching the show. Hurrah!

AnneMarie said...

I've notice that television calls many "Plain" people AMish, and most people not familiar with the Amish or Amish community just buy it.

I have NO photos of my great grandparents on either side as they refused photographs. My grandmother is the one that left the community.

Even the order in Kate's neck of the woods is still strict enough to follow that one. Photography leads to vanity and pridefullness.

Sigh.

You hit the nail on the head, Ladylou. Well said. What started out as a show detailing the day-to-day challenges of raising muliple multiples has turned into a scripted, commercial, money-making machine. It's not about the kids or the family anymore. It's about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

As a viewer from the very first "documentary," I find it so sad that we've gone from an audience who thought "oh what a cute family" to a group concerned for the welfare of those poor children.

Jon and Kate are numb-nuts and not innocent in any of this ... but TLC has a lot to answer for in using and abusing this family. I've lost all respect for that network.

I also enjoyed that crack about "Henry" acually being a crew member!

I was going to comment about the Amish/Mennonites. They both have similar lifestyles but I think they have a slightly different view about religion.

Mennonites built our house. I have watched them build all through the neighborhood and have learned about them somewhat. They do not have drivers licenses. However, they do operate the equipment/tracters on the building sites. They wear all hand sewn clothing, pack a lunch and do not smoke. However, the boss does use a cell phone and we have heard them cussing among themselves.

They are neat people. They do good work and they seem very Christ-like. I cannot even imagine them tolerating Kate or the crew, especially being on TV.

I doubt that Henry is actually Amish. It just sounds better for Kate and the network if he is!

Now they have an entirely new group of people they have ticked off to the nnnth degree.

Most of the younger Amish communities in this area are open to photography, they just don't want to become a sideshow for tourists. Real "Old Order" Amish don't even wear colors, and you don't see many of them around here anymore. The Amish people that most picture in their mind are not Old Order.

Many of our neighbors are Amish, and their culture has adapted to accomodate modern life. Still no electricity in the house, but sure enough they have a little stand across the yard they have a telephone in. Some parts of their culture are are pretty much set in stone, but some aspects change from town to town, which can be mere miles out here in Lancaster county.

Put a fork in this show, it is done. And when the fans and the production crew are no longer around to entertain and amuse these kids, what then? Kate can't think past the ribbons and bows and matchy clothes, she has staged her kids lives to the point that real life has no meaning for them. They don't know how to just exist in this world without being filmed and prompted to act. Too sad.

Onemorething said...

Also, the Amish aren't so simple and peaceful as they seem to have the reputation for. They are actually very shrew business people, many sit on millions of dollars, they just don't let the money influence their lifestyle like most people would.

Our Amish neighbor shot and killed my labrador retriever when I was in 6th grade, just because he came onto his land, which was coincidently crawling with in-heat female dogs (puppy mill). So I still have a bad taste in my mouth about them.

I know enough Amish families to know that they are lovely people for the most part, but I don't buy the "I'm just a God fearing Amishman" bit anymore. They are just people, with just as many "bad guys" as any other community.

Larry said...

OK, here is the deal. There is no way Henry is Amish. He is most likely Old Order Mennonite. That means he drives a buggy, but has electric in his home, has a phone and is not opposed to pictures. It gets old when media outlets are lazy and just use Amish to describe anyone who dresses plain.

I am pretty shocked at the ignorance of the comments here regarding Amish people. They are neither perfect, simple people (they love money and are quite shrewd business people), nor dirty puppy mill proprieters. The Amish community, just like any other, has extremes, good people and bad people, but most fall right into the middle.

The Amish go through a period called the rumspringa, which is documented on ABC, NatGeo and every Beverly Lewis book ever written. (Most are pretty good--pick one up and read one on Monday nights!) I never heard of an Amish person using a camera or CD player out of that period. That's really interesting.

That guy with the beard is probably not Amish, just a farmer with a beard. The real episode with the Amish is the first episode of season 6, "Quilts and Cuddling". Here is a preview:

Kate: My best friend Jebediah insisted I take these $1000 quilts because my kids deserve them. Also, a complete set of wooden furniture and a $10,000 cart and horse. Some homemade rootbeer, a quart of chowchow and a case of pickles. . .

Jon: The tabloids are making me out like a perverted lame fish. I'm in love with Nellie! It's not like I forced her to take off her cap, dress and apron and skinny dip with me! I'm really outgoing. The bishop shouldn't have made everyone shun her. I'm really outgoing.

I'll be interested to read the recap on this one, since I won't watch. I live smack dab in the middle of Ohio Amish country - all of my neighbors are Amish (the Swartzentruber sect, extremely conservative). I hate when the Amish are portrayed on TV either as all pious or secretly wild. They are human just like the rest of us, with good and bad behaviors, which you learn quickly when you grow up around them. That said, actual Amish who deal with the public see all kinds of bad behavior like the Gosselins and would avoid any in-depth interaction with Kate or the kids. "Henry" is probably either conservative Mennonite or New Order or Beachy Amish. Some of them don't have a problem with certain filming or pictures, depending on the purpose and the Ordnung or rules of their individual churches. But no conservative Amishman would consider an "English" woman to be a "friend" - it's forbidden. She certainly means that in general terms, like "acquaintance". He is likely one the many local sellers from whom people buy produce and become acquainted, just like we do here. In our area, there are certain less conservative Amish who allow Englishers to film in order to accurately portray their lifestyles - these "visits" are arranged by the local tourism bureau with families who are willing to participate. If you casually approached any Amish produce stand with a camera or filming, the Amish would politely turn away and someone would ask to have the things turned off. Tourists are so rude around here about that; they don't understand that many would be breaking church rules if allowed to be photographed or filmed, which has serious consequences.

Increasingly, the kids' behavior is becoming more annoying. Remember when the biker people were on the show and Kate allowed the kids to tear up his doll/dummy? I found that very irritating. Now again, with the sound guy Alex the kids are harrassing him with bratty behavior. Does Kate think it's cute or funny to let her children misbehave? Even if they were directed by the producer to "pick on" the guests for good television...does TLC really think that's cute and funny? I'm watching this thinking...If MY children treated a guest that way they'd be in their room or a corner. Those are teachable moments when you teach your children how to be polite and kind. Kate has completely lost perspective. She finds guests annoying so she's teaching her kids to treat people without respect. You only get one chance to build character in your children. The biggest influence on a child's behavior is the behavior of the parents. Children mirror their parents...good and bad. These kids attack everybody that comes on the show. Sounds like a direct mirror of Kate doesn't it? The NC show where the girls treat the boys like annoying "dirty boys" when they came to find out about the cake decorating..and the look on Joel's face when he turned and left said it all. The really awful thing is...we only have to put up with Kate now. In 10 years we're going to have little Kates running around like clones. Lets hope Kate's appeal dies and we get saved from this madness.

Great comments!

Agreed ~ no self-respecting Amish would have anything to do with Kate especially if they'd seen the show.

TLC has got to buy a clue. These people are the worst (or best depending on your viewpoint) of media whoring. Almost everyone is sick of them and I do believe the station is being turned off in protest.

My hope and prayers are that the kids have some semblance of a normal future, their parents not withstanding.

stopthemadness said...

OMG - I can hardly wait to find out if Kate dresses the children in "plain" style, no buttons! Aaden and all the boys in matching straw hats. Ugh.

Have not watched any this season but of course you cannot escape the constant commercials for the show. I heard the kids babbling and once again; I see why the tups aren't in Kindergarten, I hope they are getting language therapy, or some kind of coaching. They only ever seem to talk among themselves and they need more time talking to adults and older kids to develop language skills otherwise they'll stay like 3 year olds forever.

I would like to see Amish country as I grew up in Ohio however my resolve is that each time we watch or click we send Kate the message that she inspires us, therefore it is easy to not watch. I'll be here for the recap however.

What ABOUT the ratings? have they quit releasing them? THey don't want the news media to get hold of the way the show's tanking? Or at least the numbers are significantly down, not sure I'd call it tanking. But the real life reality caught in interviews andin tabs is more interesting by far than seeing Collin tell people that a farmer grew the corn and mommy cooked it and they are going to eat it. Yawn. That WOULD have been interesting some years ago because I too like simple things and a trip to a farm to get corn is something from my youth I'd like to see. But they've spoiled it, the simple things are set ups. The reality is everything else.

In response to WallyWinnie, some Mennonites actually drive cars and live life with modern conveniences. We have a rather large Mennonite population, and they all drive cars (usually not flashy, and usually unadorned in quiet, reserved colors), use cell phones, and allow education of women (I know one doctor, a couple of NPs and at least one PA in our area). It just depends on the order of Mennonite. That said, they are Anabaptists, like the Amish, so maybe that is where the confusion comes into play. We also have old order Amish (German speaking) who are surprisingly lax on the technology thing, even having electric lights near barns and some sharing phones with neighboring families.

True, true, true about Amish and puppy mills. I live in Northern Maryland very close to PA line, my daughter bought a boxer for $600 from Amish puppy mill. She saw an ad in the paper and wanted a boxer, called them and drove up there couple days later. She picked up the puppy and drove straight from there to my house bawling the whole way. She said the dogs are kept in horrible conditions, it broke her heart. She hates the Amish now due to that. By the way, her pup is adorable, perfect in every way and the love of our life...

I think the reason Jon and Kate are always going on field trips is that they don't want their house to be a set like their old house was with all the studio lighting. This is probably because of an investigation from the labor dept. about the kids working.

"I thought Amish didn't allow themselves to be photographed. Sounds fishy to me."

Some do, some don't. It depends on sect. It's not unusual, though, for Old Order Amish (the strictest order) to pose for tourists, even taking out their buggies for a Sunday drive and graciously allowing photographs to be taken. Nothing fishy about it. I've lived among them my entire life, and was involved in publishing a magazine for tourists. More times than not, I was "allowed" to photograph them. I never did so, though, without their permission.

Anyone with any sense at all knows Kate would never take her kids anywhere period! That's why she loved that big ole' house TLC bought for "the Gosselins"..I think she said something to the effect of "Springs coming and I can just push them all outside and then when it's lunchtime, yell for em to come and eat...and I will get so much peace and quiet now". TLC sets up everyone of these shows...cause Kate would never think it up, she would want to be on tour or another talkshow...not taking care of her kids. TLC has gone way overboard with the damage control...it's pathetic!! And if I remember, Kate never would drive even down the block, let alone to a farm, a good ways away. Guess it's a good thing she's got nannies and TLC around to do her daily tasks and get her to where she's going. She's so pathetic and if she thinks everyone is going to fall for it, she's really lost her mind.

-----------------------------------

We live in a Mennonite/Amish community. Actually most mennonites do drive and do wear store bought clothing. They always drive dark colored cars and the women don't wear pants but usually have that little lace cap on their heads. The stricter mennonites, known here as "horse and buggy mennonites" do not drive and wear only hand sewn clothing.

Poor Kate is not used to taking care of the kids all by herself- no Jon to boss around and get to do all the work-
Why is she saying she has to get everything done before Jon takes over- He has been the primary caregiver for years and probably brought them to the doctors more times than Kate. Notice how Jon never whines about being tired or doing it all as a single parent?
And finally who waits a week before bringing their child in- or should I say sending the babysitter to the doctor for an injury- after a couple of days would you not start worrying and bring them to the doctor???

GoPoshGo said...

I watched the episode, and have to admit I just felt sad. When the kids visited their former playground, it just made me feel sad for them. What a confusing childhood these poor kids are experiencing.

That said, Ms. Can-do-Kate is a load of BS. While she's busy "doing" the babysitter is picking up the slack with the kids -- and Kate fully admits this. So I say, Kate, stop your bitching about being a single mom.

#1: You're not single, since you're still married

#2: You're not a single mom because you have NOT been granted sole custody of the kids. You and Jon share custody, and therefore you CO-PARENT.

#3: You have constant help with babysitters and nannies. So, even if Jon is not there, you have help.

Please stop insulting real single moms who truly have to go it alone, and admit that you have it quite easy. How else could you run off for an impromtu additional date on The View???? Jon wasn't around, so clearly SOMEONE was available to watch the kids.

Your sob story just doesn't hold water (more like "the tears of fame").

I don't think that Kate used bad judgment waiting a while to take Cara for x-rays. She was motoring around just fine until they were actually on their way to the hospital. It did turn out just to be a bruise and as soon as it was checked out there was an instant recovery.
Kate probably suspected and rightfully so, that Cara just needed some attention (she was really acting out during filming - not typical behavior from what I've seen of Cara).
As to WHY that poor child needs some extra attention, well that's another story....

*I hate to say it but--saying a prayer before dinner.
*playing a game with the kids (notice the product placement?
*the twins just wanting to help with cooking and dish washing. (again, notice the product placement)
*if it wasn't so hot, I'd be playing with the kids
*single mother blah blah blah
*I can cook, I can cook, I can cook

Vanessa, I didn't see tonight's episode but you've touched something that really irks me about Kate: she lies (badly) about stupid, inconsequential things, I guess to try to make her stories more interesting. Instead she just sounds full of s--t.

Really, who would go to the organic farm 1-2 times a day?Is she that disorganized? Can't plan ahead?

On the View, wasn't it amazing that "I swear it's true, Dirty Dancing and Ghost are two of my favorite movies". Joy just looked at her like, "Hmmm...really?"

At the dude ranch, she claimed the hike back from the lion's den was a really long one and their guide (an older woman) said, "No it's not a long walk at all.". To which Kate tossed her muppet head back and cackled

The "never had a nanny, never will" line was rich.

There are too many mini lies to count, not to mention the malicious, self-serving lies that abound, most of which do nothing to make her look better. I mean, really who cares how long that stupid hike was? Et cetera. Talk about a pathological liar.

Of course, after just hooking herself up with Paula Deen, she'd almost HAVE to have a show about cooking and organic food and, and, and...wouldn't she? Just as has always been true. GWOP reports that she calls her boys "icky"...next thing we know she's having outings with the boys. Cara is neglected? Have the paps show up at a "Mom and Cara" afternoon at the spa. She denies Mady water and it turns up all over the internet? Mom and Mady embracing (with paps present of course). Need I go on? It's just more of the same bs. She's trying to prove she's worthy of Paula Deen's new show - and Paula is best known as a "COOK!!", naturally Ms. Kate needs to dust off this particular skill (if she ever really had it). Corn on the cob and braces are a no-no. Brackets can pop off like *that.

Most moms, single or with a partner, would be scrambling to find a sitter for the kids to have to take one to the dr. I have been in that situation many times when my dh was at work and a child needed immediate care. All poor struggling Kate had to do was send off the child with the sitter.

The not playing at the park, the not having a clue about Gator Golf, and how about letting the KIDS find the pictures in Pictureka? Good girl Kate, you win the prize. @@

And finally, all the jabs at Jon yet AGAIN. Making Kate seem so responsible and courteous to do all the work while it was still her shift.

Guess Cascade and Hasbro are sponsors now.

There was so much about this episode that mad me sick I hardly know where to begin.

Let's start with Kate comparing herself to an Amish by saying "we both cook from scratch". Riiiiiiggghtttt Kate. I have a funny feeling the last thing you cooked was monkey munch circa 2007.
When it showed her "cooking" I believe that everything was prepared for her and she simply put it together for the camera. I am sure all meals are made by the "not nanny" or take out food. This is obviously a pathetic attempted to get her cooking book going. Sickening.

I was surprised to see that they weren't using paper plates....OH THAT'S WHY! They had to throw a BLATANT advertising for Cascade dish detergent into the middle of the show. These two girls just acted for a commercial there. Did they get paid for it? No, but Kate will be able to buy herself a new outfit with the money that made.

The children and getting very argumentative. Probably from watching their lunatic of a mother yell and scream at their father when there are no cameras around.

Kate simply ignored the scuffle, I'm sure she lets the "not nanny" deal with that stuff. Kate has more important things to do. *eye roll*
We shall see how this lack of parental influence works for her when the kids are teenagers and using drugs. I can see it all now. Those kids are DOOMED.

It is the sickest show on tv. TLC is a disgusting network. Toddlers and tiarras is equally disgusting.
I can't believe they can get sponsors who want to be associated this this type of abusive child labour.

Booster seats are law for kids under 9 years if the child is under 80lbs or under 4'9". Small stature children often end up in booster seats for a long time. My doc says to use a child safety system as long as we can. Seat belts are for adult bodies and just aren't as safe for children.

If the girls still meet the requirements due to their small size ... I have to begrudgingly give K8 some credit on that one.

It was very odd- if Cara had the injury for over a week- would the doctor not send them for x-rays first thing in the morning? It obviously wasn't an emergency- This was just Kate's way of proving that she has to be the responsible parent and couldn't possibly trust Jon to take care of the kids even though we have often seen Jon take the kids to the doctors before. Was this story line created to prove her point??

Do they discuss the best way to plop bottled marinade on top of salmonella laced chicken? This dippy mother of eight with a personal chef goes to the organic veggie stand twice a day so she can cook redundant meals from scratch... funny how all this premium produce always ends up looking like blobs of kibble rolling around on paper plates. Our Kate was never photographed by the paparazzi at the Amish Whole Goods despite being a Playboy worthy megasuperstar. Imagine that! The money Kate saved by buying milk only on sale must have come in handy, that is, if she actually paid Henry for the food. Do ya think he accepts coupons and WIC cards? Poor Aaden somehow remained a corn on the cob virgin despite his mom's daily trips to see Henry while busy fixing the world. Oh Kate, you are so very stupid. Or, there was nothing wrong with Cara's foot and they coerced her to say her lines so Kate could look like the concerned parent she isn't. Kate drove to the ER but we never saw them go inside. Surely they would've filmed at least them going through the door. And unless her foot was badly swollen and she couldn't put her weight on it, the pediatrician would not have sent her immediately to the ER rather than go the next day to outpatient imaging for an x-ray. The whole charade was obviously to emphasize that Jon can't be trusted with the kids' care.

Sorry, don't know who it was, but great point about the kids getting "stomach bugs" (food poisoning?) so much in past episodes. Those kids threw up more on camera than my nearly grown up kids have...ever!

And what in the world was Kate eating?! A salad! What kind of lesson is that to teach your kids, especially the girls.
Although, I wouldn't have eaten that food either. The close up of the chicken looked suspiciously like that mass produced catered chicken your get at buffets.

I watched it...... I do so as a means of 'observation'- to see how bad this show can become.
The impression I got was that Henry thinks of Kate as " a Customer" to his Fresh Market shop set up.....My opinion? she shows great disrespect for the Amish belief System by coming to the location wearing shorts with 75% of her legs hanging out.
Surely she could have toned herself down somewhat and worn capris or something more suitable for ' shopping apparel? I'm sure he was keen on her standing there hands on hips chawing away on the wad of Gum as she spoke with him too.

Someone on 'the payroll' is reading the comments here on GWOP.

This episode addressed many of the complaints we as viewers have offered.
#1.that Kate never cooks - she has 'chefs' ... this episode she cooks up a wonderful meal from lovely fresh vegetables bought at the Amish market stand/shop - 3 cheers for Kate ( I'm being sarcastic and please bear with me )
#2. The topic of religion has flown out the window. In earlier Seasons they mentioned going to church etc and many of us have mentioned this seems to have gone by the way side. This episode, they say Grace before they eat their meal and yes, Throw in a cute little ( memorized) ditty about Jesus made it /Henry Growed it/ Mommy cooked it/ and we ate it........ and oh yes!! they ALWAYS say that when they eat food from Henry's stand..... even tho they haven't been back there since before they moved to 'the mansion'
#3.The fact that Kate never sits with the kids for meals. This time she did...
#4.The fact that she doesn't actually interact or play with the children. This one she did stage herself doing a couple of board games..... complete with the ridiculous fake voice plus the Witch CackleLaughfromHell.
#5.Such a good Mother ( sarcasm again folks) that 2 weeks after Cara injured her foot she finally decided to have her seen at a nite CLinic just to make certain that everything would be taken care of before her ' custody time' was over with. Gag me.... since we know that she and Jon share time with the kids? how come it took her 2 whole WEEKS to decide tonight was the time to take the poor girl to be seen /Xrayed??
and it was only when one of the ' lidol' kids piped up during supper about 'now you just need to fix Cara's foot Mommy' ... and she suddenly became ' oh yeah that's right, Cara has a sore foot' ..
#6.The fact that the kids continue to eat from paper plates in spite of the new kitchen reno in which TWO dishwashers were installed. This week actually shows Kate with hands in dishwater EEEK!!! as well as stacks of dishes with ' plastic compartmentalized plates for the kids' ready for the dishwasher.... complete with a VERY obvious placement of Cascade dishwasher soap - which conveniently was also one of the Commercials last nite too.

there may well have been others but these were the very obvious ones for me. I might have missed a few as I had my eyes closed while I shook my head a few times.

about the cooking. I made a 'close up' observation.
When Kate was cutting up peppers? she was at first cutting from the outside of the vegetable to make them into strips. Most people who do much 'cooking' know that this is a good way to cut yourself as the knife can slip on the shiny surfact of the pepper. She was 'showing the Twins' how to cut vegetables.
Way to go Kate! LOL
then it changed later on and she did it the safer way - having the pepper skin-side down. Where did I put the Tylenol now? I can feel a headache coming on from all this ' over-Zealous Staged " Reality" '

It's clear they're setting us up for the release of Kates "cookbook." All this talk about vegetables and two episodes in a row of Kate attempting to cook. I read a couple of her recipes online. My favorite:

PB & Banana Sandwich

Ingredients:
2 slices of bread
peanut butter
banana, thinly sliced

Spread peanut butter on bread. Place banana slices on peanut butter. Place other slice of bread on top, slice in triangles, and serve.

LORDY BE, not only did Kate invent The Flag Cake, she also invented the peanut butter sandwich!!!!! I feel like I should be paying her royalties for all the years I've "stolen" this recipe from her.

To repent, I will offer her my father's recipe for the Peanut Butter Lollypop for her next cookbook:

Ingredients:
Peanut Butter
Teaspoon

Instructions:
Scoop a heaping spoonful of peanut butter onto the teaspoon. Serve.

How much more FRAUD are we going to be fed from this woman??????? UUUGGGGGG.

Review of last night's show by David Zurawik, TV critic.

Jon & Kate: Where do ads end, shows now begin?
It is getting harder and harder to figure out where the ads end and the TLC show "Jon & Kate Plus 8" now begins -- or resumes after commercial breaks anyway.

While the product placement on "Jon & Kate "often seemed excessive to me this season, Monday's show seemed especially problematic for the way the main story lines of the episode and the ads merged.

As soon as Kate said she was going to have "family game night" with the kids in Monday's episode, we went to commercial, and what was the commercial for? You guessed it: family game night.

Either TLC is shopping the show to advertisers, and telling them they can get their ads placed right at the point where the Gosselin family endorses the product, or worse, the producers and TLC are having the family engage in activities for products that are pre-sold. In order words, the ads are driving what the family does onscreen. Either way, tell me again what part of the entire 30 minutes is reality TV entertainment -- and not an ad.

And then, there was the chicken cacciatore that Kate cooked after buying organic vegetables from an Amish farmer, followed by an ad for Ragu as a way to get your kids to eat their vegetables.

I am not going to question the commitment to and love of organically grown vegetables that Kate espoused over and over during the first half of Monday's show. But I do see it as part of the "greening" of Kate by TLC. Remember when a contractor came and put in solar panels and all sorts of other energy saving "green" products in an episode that ran between the end of last season and the start of this one?

I have to say I didn't buy Kate's commitment to the environment one bit in that show, and if she really was into organically grown vegetables would she let the kids eat some of the junk snacks that she does?

Who knows? I spent the whole episode looking for the two dogs that have been sent back to the breeder.

I didn't see them. But they were rarely let out of their crates when Kate was running the house in the episodes that I saw.

I'm sorry, I can't get past what happened to those dogs right now -- and to any of the kids who might have formed attachments to them.

Now we know why Kate considers filming to be such hard work: that's when she has to take care of and interact with her kids -- sometimes all day!

Also, Cara and Mady seem to be absolutely miserable. The way Cara was acting when they were playing with instruments, while inappropriate, showed the toll that stress is taking in her life. Have we ever heard Kate talk about trying to help her kids get through this difficult time? No, she only talks about them helping her get through it, because in her mind, she is the only one suffering.

another thought here about the fact that two weeks had gone by with Cara having a sore foot?
Jon and Kate exchange Custody times. Would that possibly mean that each has a week with the children.
So is this some sort of back-handed slap at Jon to disclose to ' the Viewers' that he was with the children for his entire ' time of custody' but did nothing about Cara having an injured foot/

doesn't really make a lot of sense because obviously SHE also allowed her entire week to go by as well before she finally declared ' oh yeah right! Cara has a sore foot'....

that poor girl...... When she was ushered back into the van after having the Xray results Kate declared "Good thing everything is OK - we don't have time for casts do we Cara" .

the poor kid had such a look of dismay -- how would she interpret that comment made by her mother? " I don't have time for your aches and pains so don't bother me? " or maybe " don't go hurting yourself Cara because I don't have time to deal with it or you" ??

yup! Mother of the year award coming up here .......... NOT!!!!

Actually, my midwife (who served a mostly Amish/Mennonite population) said that the Amish will very aggressively pursue fertility treatments if they don't get pregnant on their own.

Other than that though, I agree with you.

Also, the Amish aren't so simple and peaceful as they seem to have the reputation for.

This is true. In addition to the puppy mill issue, they've got a serious problem with child sexual abuse/incest. It isn't that there are more pedophiles in their population than in the general population, its just that they handle things "internally" and don't involve the police. So all the lecherous old man has to do is apologize to the elders and promise not to do it again...and he is free to go find a new victim.

Oh...and many Mennonites do have drivers license, and they even have colleges. The Mennonites tend to be more "modern" than the Amish, though there is a spectrum within the Mennonite community just as there is within the Amish community. As a childbirth educator I recently taught a Mennonite couple, and he wore "modern" clothes (slacks and plain button down shirt) while she wore hand sewn calico dresses & the "sugar scoop" on her head.

Then there is my OB/GYN...raised Mennonite, and slightly embarrassed to do vaginal exams. LOL.

I had similar thoughts when I saw Cara's meltdown. From what I recall, she always seemed to be the reserved, less volatile of the twins. She was completely out of control and inconsolable -- not typical Cara behavior (at least as she's portrayed on the show). Only a numb-nut like Kate would refuse to actually mother that poor child and give her what she needed in that moment: Gently take her into another room (away from the chaos), hug her, and talk to her about her feelings. Cara is so close to Jon -- it must be killing her inside to have him gone so much. Does Mommy dearest even acknowledge that Cara's meltdown is related to all the chaos in her life right now? Comfort her in any way? No, using her "mom logic" what does she do? She shoos Cara away.

Nice one, Kate.

Might I ask what was wrong with saying grace? Just curious.

My guess would be that the original poster didn't have a problem with saying grace, per se, but with the fake act that saying grace is in the Gosselin household--we've seen them eat HOW many times? And how many times have they said grace before?

Seems like Kate has actually finally "heard" all the people who are questioning the depth of her spiritual beliefs, so she's trying to inject some religious activity into the shows.

Booster seats are law for kids under 9 years if the child is under 80lbs or under 4'9". Small stature children often end up in booster seats for a long time. My doc says to use a child safety system as long as we can. Seat belts are for adult bodies and just aren't as safe for children.

Not just "small statured." Half of all 11 year old girls are still short enough to benefit from a booster, only about 15% of 10 year old girls are tall enough to not need one.

Loud is Okay said...

I thought Cara's meltdown was pretty typical for a frustrated 8 year old with a twin sister, let alone half a dozen 5 year old siblings. My brother and I would argue over every little thing and there were only two of us. She's breathing too loud, he's touching me, she lost my Ninja Turtle (am I dating myself?!). My point is that I know a lot of families where the fighting is minimal. In my house, fighting and confusion was the norm. If my mom said "Tell your brother to come down for dinner" I would stand right where I was and scream "DINNNEERRRR" as loud as possible. Not exactly what she asked me to do, haha, but that's just how we operated.

I think that the Gosselin's are just a loud, obnoxious, expressive bunch. No problem there. And refereeing every fight over toys would be a lost cause in that mania, especially when there are 8 rugrats involved. I was actually glad to see Cara fight back, Mady usually gets the best of her.

Kittie6 said...

Of course Kate didn't attempt to console Cara in any way, just the same as her lack of kindness to Mady. The twins are not Kate's main source of $$$. And the kid with the chewie? Well, we are supposed to consider the younger kids as being 3 year olds and forget that they are 5, I guess. Only Alexis and Collin seem to be understandable without subtitles. This is sad; Leah used to be so advanced in speech and Aaden knew the names of all the animals, but now Aaden hardly speaks and Leah talks with her fingers in her mouth. Those kids are breaking down right in front of their "mother" and Kate can't see it because she is focused on herself and the $$$ she is making.

I just want to make one final comment about Kate waiting a week to have Cara's foot looked at- It's not really the time period- although I think after 3 days most parents would have an injury checked out- I think it's the timing- Kate waits for a filming day when she is very busy to start worrying about the foot- waits until after supper then has to send a sitter because she is filming with the tups- Then to top it all off -Kate implies that she has to take care of this before Jon shows up-
Doesn't this seem like it was all made up for the episode- or at least the timing of this?

her way of saying "my custody is coming to an end so I have to make sure ever t is crossed" why? cause jon is incapable of taking Cara to the doctor? arent YOU the one who ignored her complaint for about a week?

While flipping channels the other day I happened to catch a few minutes of the J & K episode where they recently took the tups to the dentist. After the tups appointment, Kate asks the dentist for a report. As the dentist explains to Kate that one of the girl tups has some minor plaque build up , Kate responds by saying ' yea that's Jon'.

The View always tapes the Friday episode, Kate wasn't there an additional day, she taped that episode right after the live Tuesday show.

I'm not too sure...I'm pretty sure Kathy Griffin's Twitter page alluded to the fact that last Friday's episode of the View was taped on Wednesday afternoon (the Friday episodes are usually taped on Wednesday or Thursday afternoons, not earlier in the week). Could be wrong, though...

And who else loved the fact that the kids "fought" over who was going to pray before the meal? Another one of our *complaints* addressed! (For the record, I'm not anti-meal praying {I do pray before meals} but the scripting of the entire episode was just ridiculous.) As soon as the 'tups can read, they'll be using massive cue cards instead of the production assistants trying to get the kids to say lines just right...

I have to comment on the notion that because Kate eats organic she must be "green".
=========================

I have to comment too, having 8 kids is not reducing your carbon footprint, it's enlarging it significantly, nothing green about it. You'd think that having a show about 8 kids ie. the future, you'd be doing all kinds of green things & say yes, I have 8 kids, but look how they're going to look after the planet, themselves & their families. But no, not Kate, instead it's all about the parent's indulgence, not a good lesson for any child. These people could fill a land site on their own in a year with the waste they generate. Goodness sakes, give those kids some silverware to eat with, what is up with that, they're not worthy of silverware? How weird for them IF they ever get to go over to a friend's house & eat off real plates with real silverware.

Absolutely intolerable. The 6 are old enough to be able to use silverware, napkins, and regular cups. Uh...so is Kate, by the way. I continue to feel sorry for Mady and Cara, as they are consistently treated the same as the 6. For example, they were given the same portions, on the same divided plates as their siblings. As an 8 year old, I would have been offended at being served on baby plates.

This is the first show I watched in months and I have a few observations:
1)the kids now pray before eating? (Hello Bible Belt speaking engagements)
2) one of the little girls was seen in the beginning sitting in the van and eating some kind of blanket? Disturbing.
3) Remember the photos of them shucking the corn in August at the garage? Taped for this episode. So it is not current (the dogs were still around )
4) Kate talks alot about memories and talks about how hard it is for her as she stands in the almost $100K kitchen she did not pay for with all new everything. She mentioned "organic", "custody" and "single parent" a few times as they are her new money makers. She seemed to dwell a little too much on her current situation in an effort to garner sympathy. All of this is geared to the idiots who will be watching her new Mom show.Imagine how beat she would be if she had to get up every morning and go to work!
5)Cara and Mady are continuing to be shown in such an unflattering light. They were horrible. Cara was disturbing and I can't help but wonder what her peers think about her. Sad that this is still being shown as they approach age 9.
Sure, all kids probably do that, but it is not televised for the world to see.I thought moms were supposed to protect their kids?

Honestly, it was like a train wreck and she did not even seem to care.

You know, this "single mom" stuff is getting old! If they had to raise those kids like every other family out there, one of them would be single! Mom or Dad would have to be gone to work all day every day and sometimes weekends! And the OTHER parent would be at home doing it ALL BY THEMSELVES-hence "single"
Geez, then I'm a single mom too! With all the time my husband spends working to support us FINANCIALLY, I do everything all by myself too, and this means mowing the lawn, taking out the trash, filling up the gas tank, replacing screens...those kids are now old enough that they SHOULD be able to be left unattended for some time while she does AALLL the stuff she claims she has to do.
"No, you can't go swimming because I have to get supper ready, and you'll stay inside with me..." for example and not leaving 8 kids with a teenaged babysitter in the pool while you have some nice adult converstion with the camera guy.

So I go on Youtube to watch Monday's episode, and OMG, it's so boring that I don't even watch it all!

A couple of things that bothered me: why doesn't she let them play the games? They're old enough without her showing them the answers----and just in case you want to rush out and buy the games, the camera conveniently zooms in several times.

Of course, she is smacking her gum. Could this be to hide smoking or drinking? She did take that big swig of bottled water after dinner.

And the melt downs---no discipline in front of the cameras but when the cameras are not around, I wonder....

The show's writers are DEFINITELY addressing the comments from this site. Notice no paper plates and now use of the dishwasher, with Cascade prominently displayed.

Well, ol' Kate has got what she wished for, a show just about her, and she stinks. The show is like watching someone's home movies which are of interest to no one except the people filmed. This show is DOA.

I completely agree... they shouldn't be on tv. My problem was with the posters who act like their kids don't fight or that there is never any yelling in their house. I do know people with households like that, and I don't think they are any healthier than mine, where we scream at each other, get it out of the way, and then its over.

Should their day to day family life be filmed? Probably not. But lets not act like they are the height of dysfunction because they aren't perfect pod people.

I understand what you're saying here, but the thing is that Kate feels she is doing all the mom stuff, plus providing financially. Right now she is trying to find a more permanent gig, she realizes that J&K plus 8 won't last forever. I agree that having money makes things easier in some regards, like having babysitters, but now that their lifestyle has become so different, and her expectations are so much higher, it puts more pressure on her to keep the money coming.

Again, this is mostly Kate trying to get super rich and famous, but even if she stepped down from the show and the spotlight, she would have to find some way to provide for her 8 kids. And lets face it, uprooting their lives and moving them back into a smaller home and simpler lifestyle doesn't seem like its in the cards. And if she ever WOULD go back to nursing, she still couldn't sustain her family. Her kid's private school tuition exceeds what her salary would be. Is private school (and quite an expensive one at that) a necessity? No, but it is a choice many people make, and I think shipping them off to public school would be a disaster at this point.

They have gotten to a place where to maintain their lifestyle, which may seem extravagant to us, they have to creatively market themselves. And I mean CREATIVELY, because we know there is nothing special about either Jon or Kate, or Lazy and Crazy as I like to call them.

I overheard my daughter's comments, which where "Gramma they (twins) act like such babies", "I'm glad Mady's not my sister", and "Eeeeuuuw, Cara's vampire nails are so gross!"

The point is, my daughter has some obnoxious habits and diva meltdowns, but the whole world doesn't have it on DVR for strangers the world over to snark on.

It's a choice people make that can AFFORD it. As Sandra Bernhard said on Kathy and Hoda's show - they better not get used to the lifestyle since they won't be able to maintain it.

When wealth comes to you without real talent or skills to earn it, you better manage that wealth wisely to last a long time. It doesn't appear they did.
