Response to TLC Statement

TLC president Eileen O'Neill read a statement about the reality show at Television Critics Associated Panel in Pasadena, California.

"Over the last four years and through 100 episodes, we've captured this remarkable family's entertaining chaos," O'Neill said. "Viewers fell in love and the show developed a passionate, loyal following."

But this past spring, life intervened and the family's status changed. It was certainly something we never expected, nor planned to have happen. But this has resulted in unprecedented television," she continued.

"Our approach to the circumstance was simple: to cover the family with great care and thoughtfulness as they dealt with a subject that is all too familiar to many American families today."

Jon and Kate have never said they were perfect, which has made them relatable and created an undeniable connection with the viewers. We will continue to capture this family's journey in a respectful and sensitive way.

"The show comes back on Monday and most new episodes remain a work in progress," she went on. "But I will tell you: the iconic couch is gone. Jon and Kate will now have separate chairs for their interview."

"You're still going to see two parents that love their kids, but you'll be seeing them parenting separately," she said. "You'll see what it's like when Kate has to put up a tent for a backyard camping experience by herself. Or, you'll see Jon trying to cook up a pizza for the kids."

Viewers will see Jon and Kate date, O'Neill said.

"As far as new people and places that may be cycling into Jon and Kate's life, we are taking it on a case-by-case basis," she said.

"This is real life. It's important to remember that our cameras are only there for moments in time, and those moments have limits."

When I read this statement, I was at a loss for words. Have O’Neill and TLC lost all sense of decency and compassion? This is a real family, with eight very real children who have very real feelings, in the midst of a very real divorce. Eight children who are most likely confused, upset, and unsure of what’s going on in their lives. What should be a time for privacy and parental reassurance has been turned into a three ring circus by their parents and TLC is taping every step of the way.

“Unprecedented television” is what O’Neill is calling this mess. Unprecedented television. Think about those words. In industry speak this means a draw, a train wreck that people can’t turn away from. Think about those words again. Notice anything missing? Like maybe a mention of the children being affected? Eight kids who have made TLC millions, who have made their parents into Z-list celebrities, are now just the newest means to television ratings.

What makes this unprecedented? There’s nothing new about parents divorcing, I would bet almost all of us could name at least one family we know going through divorce right now. So that just leaves the cameras, crew, producers, and a television network directing, editing, and manipulating the situation for a weekly television show. Unprecedented indeed.

O’Neill claims TLC will cover this “unprecedented television” with “great care and thoughtfulness”. Will this be the same great care and thoughtfulness afforded to the children for the last three years? The great care and thoughtfulness that allowed for their physical pain and suffering, their illnesses, their most intimate moments, their embarrassments, and their lowest moments to be fodder for a weekly episode isn’t what the children need right now. No one deserves that kind of great care and thoughtfulness even on their best day let alone when going through one of the hardest events in their young lives.

Shame on you TLC and O’Neill. Haven’t you done enough damage to these children? It’s obvious their parents aren’t going to pull the plug, the dollar signs in their eyes have blinded them. Contract be damned, enough is enough.

That's an incredible statement that O'Neill made. It boggles the mind. I wonder what she majored in, in college... warping reality? How to demonstrate zero integrity?

She has brought the bucks in for TLC and is just announcing that she plans to continue to do so... the welfare of 8 children be damned. TLC will just pay for all the children's therapists. I hope money for therapists is in the contract.

(I also think that, eventually, Jon and Kate might need therapy -- to be able to live with themselves.)

Thanks Fostersmom! All I can say is Eileen O'Neill is in for the shock of her homegrown career when her plan to put lipstick on a pig doesn't just fail, but actually backfires. Seriously, has O'Neill not been paying attention? Jon Gosselin is now just as despised as Kate is. No one cares who they date. They aren't Brad and Angie for pete's sake. They are the Boobsie Twins.

I read this statement before and had the same reaction. Spitting nails wouldn't be enough. This blatant statement by Eileen O'Neill only shows how she and TLC are totally OUT OF TOUCH with reality and what's morally right. Let alone Jon & Kate. Yep, it's a jaw dropper!! I'm still shaking my head!

Iconic couch? WTH? Good grief they think a lot of their little loser sub par cable reality show!

"Respectful and sensitive?"
Uhh... are we talking about the same show? See, the one I'm familiar with normally has these two parents squawking at each other, constipated children in public, and two pre-teens reactions to their parents divorce, all willingly aired to the public.

I'm sorry, but NOTHING is sensitive towards those eight kids. Not now and not later when this all comes back to haunt them.

Kelly's Grandma, I agree, Jon and Kate do need counseling, and they both do need it now. I hope it is something their lawyers advise them to do.

I can't see Kate "stoop so low" though. She will never believe she is at fault.

Jon might benefit, if he keeps himself touchable. He has turned into such a box of hair lately that we don't know if even he would consent to it.

What is wrong with this woman? I don't see anything "entertaining" watching 8 innocent children being exploited. Nor is it entertainment watching Collin suffering from constipation and have a b.m. extracted from his bum, seeing Aaden throw up, kids with fevers, numerous meltdowns, kids getting punished and threatened,a potty full of feces and pee, kids with poop coming out of their diaper, kids hitting each other over and over again because they are probably very frustrated with all of the damn noise and cameras being shoved in their faces, kids made to go to an amusement park in temps over 100 degrees, made to go to ski school in the frigid weather not to mention having Jon and Kate speak openly about their nasty and broken down marraige in front of millions of viewers.

Oh yeah lady...This is entertaining.....For who? Certainly not for the Gosselin children.

I have put O'Neill in the same catagory as Jon and Kate.

Shame that all these adults don't give a **** about any of these innocent kids.

O’Neill claims TLC will cover this “unprecedented television” with “great care and thoughtfulness”.

I would hardly refer to the J & K + 8 'reality show' as 'unprecedented television. MTV has been providing its viewers with REAL LIFE docu drama type programming for quite some time that have focused on everything from abortion, hate crime, TRUE LIFE, same sex marriage, drug abuse and most recently 16 and Pregnant. What Ms. O'Neill fails to acknowlege is that while the J & K + 8 reality show may be the first to feature a family of two sets of multiples the relatable premise of the show has been overshadowed by an over abundance of product placement and ridiculously staged and over the top 'sponsored' scenerios that serve absolutely no purpose to a premise or reasonable 'reality' for a working class family with eight children. The only example of 'unprecendented television' that is the J & K + 8 reality show is that the TLC network has methodically and intentionally got away with EXPLOITING the lives of eight minor children for self serving and montary purposes all in the name of RATINGS.

When the children grow up, they should sue TLC for child abuse.

You do know that people usually go after the one with more money. By the time they are old enough to sue, their parents probably waste all the money. You can sue them but you won't get your money back. Suing TLC is an excellent choice. Lawyers usually encourage you to sue the rich one.

Just like patients usually the hospital not the doctor or nurse. The hospital is the one with more money.

"Entertaining chaos"? Are you kidding me?

If what I have witnessed on this program is "entertaining chaos", then I have been wrong all along about what entertainment is. Chaos I get. Lots of kids = chaos.
But where is the entertainment? I didn't find the eye pokes and the boink-boinks of the 3 Stooges at all entertaining, I didn't find the way parents and children interacted on many sit-coms entertaining. If I didn't like it on officially scripted programs, I'm certainly not enjoying it on a "reality series" with children too young to filter things. In this "entertaining chaos", the lessons learned seem to be that slapping Daddy is OK as long as you laugh at him while you're doing it, saying unkind things to/about another family member is OK as long as you smile to the camera and snort, picking at your spouse (and the parent of your children) is OK as long you feel entitled to do it, and eyerolls are the acceptable way to respond to someone you profess to love.

Yeah, it's entertaining, all right.
About as entertaining as watching a snake coil around a rabbit.

I vote NO on any more of Jon and Kate Plus 8 - the show with no conscience and no heart.

Entertaining chaos, my middle finger.

Continuing on with this ghastly show is an act of sheer desperation on the part of Eileen O'Neill and the Gosselins.

Everyone knows J-K8 is teetering on the edge. The objective now is to grab as much money as possible from clueless, socially irresponsible advertisers before ratings tank.

This show is no longer relatable to a wide audience.
When it was, it was due to two key elements: family values and cute 'little' kids.

There are no family values left to speak of. The parents have shown themselves to be lying, incredibly obnoxious fame whores. The kids aren't little anymore. And - elephant in the room warning - as kids get older, in general, they're just not as cute and appealing, except to family.

I read today that Lorenzo Lamas is doing a reality show where he reconciles with his 19 year old son who slept with Lamas's fourth wife.

The reality show genre is showing itself to be sick and twisted.

I think that not if,but when Jon and Kate finally see what they have done to their children, they will probably try and blame it on TLC. I didn't think I could be more disapointed with these people, until I watched Jon's video yesterday, and now this!

Hmmmm. Me thinks Ms O'Neill is trying a tad too hard to push the show. What happened to the sacharine sweet "It's a Wonderful Life". . .angle of a mere year ago?Now the spin is chaos. With all the chaos in people's REAL lives, one does not need to turn on the t.v. to watch a couple of grifters manufacture chaos. All I care about is having laws made that protect the kids who have to work on these reality shows so their parents don't squander away all of their money.

If I want to watch a divorce play out in the national media, I hear there is a bigger one that Jon and Kate's to focus on now. I have just read a report that one of our former governors/VP candidates
is getting divorced. You can bet if that's true (and I have no confirmation of it at the moment)
Jon and Kate will once again be
knocked out of the spotlight by somebody else's grim story. Darn the luck, huh Gosselins? First Michael Jackson and now this.....

I'm always sorry when there is a divorce, so please don't read this as any kind of a nasty comment about the former Gov/VP candidate.

Well what realy stood out to me is the lack of mention of the kids. Yes this is what I want, but not in this way. Dealing with the situations with care? Ha, who cares for those kids? Nobody that should be. Right now I think the kids only hope is that whoever is in charge of them, is good to them, reads to them, and plays with them, and encourages them. All that this *industry* cares about is the money making bottom line. This is a true american tragedy.

TLC~ I am horrified by what you are allowing to happen to these kids. I really used to love your chanel, back when Paige Davis was on Trading Spaces, and I really did learn things other than how to be a bad parent. Its too bad, because I think that Cake Boss has a potential to be a good show, but I cant watch it because that would tell you that I appove of this way the chanel is going. And I do not! You have lost another 4 viewers in my house.

And NO I DO NOT want to see Jon and K8 date. What could be worse? not much.

I know there will be people who want to watch this divorce on TV. It will get ugly, no doubt about it, (they weren't good at marriage BEFORE they hated each other) and then there will be fewer viewers. Or, TLC won't film the ugliness and the tabloids will report it and the whole show will become a farce. I hope it won't be long before the whole thing goes away.

New episodes for Monday? Did a kitchen renovation... it sucked. Not watching that. I've seen the Gosselins go on too many vacations... not watching that. Camping with eight kids and OCD Kate... nope, not watching that. I am finally free!

TLC advertises "life unscripted" but I find that difficult to swallow. In the upcoming episodes with Jon and the kids, it shows Jon at arts and crafts day. Really? Did Jon come up with this on his own? Did he actually get all the supplies together to make these crafts? Does he even know how to make these crafts? In the pictures on Radar it looked like the TLC crew was putting this all together and helping the kids. I can site a lot more examples, but I will try to keep it short. TLC needs to advertise as "Life, scripted." I personally do not believe there is anything "real" about any reality show on tv now. Jon, Kate, and TLC execs are all liars.
They can only read $ signs and I really do not think they care about anything else. I have not, and will not watch the show. I have no respect for any of them.

TLC has become a disgusting network that could care less about kids.

If you saw Toddlers & Tiaras last Wednesday, they featured a 10 year old girl named Tootie. She was a pistol, no doubt, but still a very young girl being taken advantage of. They ( film crew ) interviewed Tootie after she was awarded a crown, but not the top crown she wanted. They asked her if she was happy, and she said, "No" and tried to fight back tears behind a diva facade. Then Tootie realized what she said sounded hateful ( saying she wasn't happy ) and asked the film crew that what she just said not be shown on TV.

TLC made sure to show that 10 year old girl's plea to not show what she said...you guessed it...on TV! They did not care about her feelings AT ALL. They did it to make her look like a spoiled brat ( which she was, but the kid realized it and wanted to take her words back ).

I think TLC is meanspirited and evil and they aren't fooling me one bit that they are respectful of children.

Oh, it'll be unprecedented, alright. We'll be able to watch the complete and utter ruination of a family, including the mental breakdowns of eight children, all for our viewing pleasure.

Is there no child psychologist on site to watch out for these kids? I know Cara and Mady are seeing a therapist, but come on, someone needs to make sure all of them have their mental needs taken care of. Even if they weren't on TV, I'd expect someone like a child psychologist to be a part of their lives because there's 8 of them - there are definite jealousy issues and favoritism issues within that family. I'm sure at least one of those children feels neglected by their parents. Heck, in my family, there were only 2 kids and one of us always felt neglected!

I haven't seen the show at all this year, and I feel kind of awkward making statements like this, but this show has got to be pulled off the air. Why are sponsors not pulling out? This is almost worse than a televised execution - at least with something like that, it's over in a few seconds; with this, it's been going on for years and will continue to do so. It's painful and heartbreaking and should stop. The general public has nothing to learn from this tragic escapade.

For the last 3 years or so, TLC has been very snotty , dedicated to mocking those who aren't cool enough. Remember the life lesson figurine about the woman with the cats? Or the show "Honey, we're killing the kids?" where parents would be horrified to see their child as being slightly pudgy with a receding hairline at 40? (Pudgy and balding? Oh, the horrors!)

J and K now have the values not of Christians, but of elitist hipsters. I'm sure those who work at that channel are pleased that they are now doing "normal" things, like sleeping with people on the first date, taking "me" time (after all, kids can't be happy if their parents aren't!) and getting plastic surgery. Putting God before their appearance, abstaining before marriage, sacrificing for your children? To the new Jon and Kate and whomever they are copying, those things are what uncool losers do. I bet Eileen O'Neil can't wait for the episode when the kids find Mommy's date sleeping in her bed, so they can learn that mommies have lives, too.

Disgusting.

You can see the same fraud going on in their other programming. So I have no reason to watch them. When this creature says, "Viewers will see Jon and Kate date," doesn't that seem highly suspect? We all know that Jon has his share of groupies lined up around the block, but how do they know Kate will date? If this divorce is truly this painful as Kate pretends and all she is focusing on right now is being the rock (gag) in her children's lives, how does O'Neill know that dating isn't the last thing on Kate's mind? I would think that most single parents with eight children can't even imagine finding the time to date. Where would she even meet someone? Poor gal only goes grocery shopping and to UPS, right?

Ugh. It's all so devious and pre-planned, it's disgusting. So how many episodes in until they pull out Kate's guy? Wait for your cue, Stevie.

I have to defend Bowling Green State University here a bit. I'm an alumni and while pop culture might be a relatively useless degree, the program at BGSU is one of the best in the country. Even the intro to pop culture class I took as a freshman was one of the more demanding classes I took in four years. I don't know what you would do with a pop culture degree, but you would certainly work hard to get it.

Back to the issue at hand, O'Neill is delusional if she thinks that this crap response is all it's going to take to make America love J&K again. Even people who have never watched the show once hate these two if only for the fact that they are so over exposed. Their media exploits put them on the radar of the public eye and not in a good way.

It's Called Judgment Day said...

I would like to address the subject of what place GWoP might have in the Gosselin children's life as they grow older and begin to research the controversy surrounding their childhood.

I would hope the Gosselin kids would see where many, many viewers had great concern for their welfare when others closer to them either did not, or felt powerless to step in on their behalf.

People have been commenting here on GWoP for a year or more to my understanding and it was always over the issue of the children's exploitation which is the common thread in the majority of GWoP topics. Criticisms of the parents are a result of people's frustrations over how they've chosen to raise eight kids in the public eye. (When the public has been invited in, they are involved!)

I'm thinking the Gosselin kids are going to totally understand why snarky comments were made about their money-driven, fame-seeking parents. In fact, if the kids ever do go back through these archived comments, I should think their own conflicts and questions about their childhoods can be validated by the informal yet passionate analysis voiced here by hundreds if not thousands of people.

If the children want proof that what they might be feeling at age 18, 25 or 35 is justified about why their troubled, privacy-deprived childhoods had to be spent largely being filmed, they can run through history on this site to realize how much it was bothering viewers as it happened in real time, and they are not wrong in how they're feeling all the years later as young adults.

It is hard to go up against your authoritative parents and question why certain things happened in your childhood; it's awkward and gut-wrenching. But those conversations need to happen, and they will happen with eight Gosselins vs. Jon and Kate.

Regarding the kids suing TLC: Parents can only sign away (or sell) their own rights. Once they are legally adults, the kids could pursue any course of action they wish. Which doesn't mean that they would win: a court might decide that they "benefited" from the parental agreement, and fail to award damages. Or not.

Whichever, suing after the fact in no way protects the kids. The damage is done, and is not easily repaired. The whole thing is disgusting, and the adults involved criminally abusive, including the slimy TLC rep.

I think it's disgusting that the show is even coming back for another season. This show will now only appear to the lowest common denominator, and TLC's claims to having anything to do with "learning" will be rendered meaningless. They are about perpetuating fame whores at the expense of children, meanwhile the potentially good shows like "Cake Boss" and "Table for 12" (you know, the one about a REAL family with multiples) are being cast by the wayside.

Tragic and disgusting, and I hope the 8 are able to sue for millions when they get older.

But this one comment hasn't been touched yet and it was the first to stand out and irritate me:

"Over the last four years and through 100 episodes, we've captured this remarkable family's entertaining chaos," O'Neill said.

Nice how they gloss over the fact that the 100+ episodes were actually filmed in the past TWO years, not four. That's a minimum of one episode per week, and given how much filming goes into a 3 minute music video (1-3 days on average) I know their "2-3 days a week" of filming is way off.

And also interesting they claim responsibility for the past four years of filming when, IIRC, it was Discovery Health that aired the two hour long shows that make up the first two years.

Are TLC and Discovery Health one in the same?

Oh, and then there was this gem:
We will continue to capture this family's journey in a respectful and sensitive way.

Continue?!? How about starting down that path first?

Last time I checked, talk show host has to be either funny like Ellen or very kind and friendly like Oprah. Tyra at least tries to be friendly. Kate is so rude and mean, she can't even hide it. The talk show demographic won't accept her.

The only people can be rude and mean but still have a good career is musicians who have hit songs or really good actors. It's like their talent is so large, audience give them free pass.

Mean spirit and low life reality stars usually get 15 minutes of fame because viewers are curious how low can they go. After a while, people get tired of them and move on.

This freak show will have a burst of high ratings by people watching the train wreck and then they will realize how boring KON is and move on.

On sueing TLC, the kids will. Go read up on A Minor Consideration. As soon as they reach 18, contracts their parents entered are void and the former child "star" has the capacity to demand resitution. I am not a lawyer but it's clear that TLC is breaking labor laws and has made themselves vulnerable to a successful lawsuit by the Gosselin 8.

I will find it funny when they get slammed with 8 little law suits. The money they made off the back of these kids will be nothing to what they will be forced to pay out. Karma will happen.

Meanwhile, by that time, O'Neil would have been burned out of the television business that uses and throws away people just like her, every day of the week.

I think the kids will wonder why people cared so much about their Mom's hats and boobs. That seems so trivial and unimportant in the scheme of their lives and I really doubt they will wade through all that. I also think they will want to put this part of their lives behind them and not relive but reading all of this.

Cake Boss is heavily promoted not shoved to the wayside. I am glad that Table for Twleve is been pushed to the wayside. 10 fwere kids to feel the sting of exploitation.

Anyone notice that in California, OctoMom announced that she had signed a deal for her own reality show and THE VERY NEXT DAY, she was taken to court and a judge appointed legal guardians for her children as well as setting up a trust fund so their earnings wouldn't be frittered away by Suleman and her delusions of grandeur.

Tnank Paul Peterson and Gloria Alred for this, as well as California's legal system which has a long history of dealing with this type of stage parent.

It boggles the mind that Pennsylvania is still allowing TLC to run amok in funding the continuing abuse of the eight Gosselin children. When they are old enough to sue, I hope they go after both Pennsylvania's Department of Children Services *AND* Ms. O'Neill personally as contributors to their years of physical and emotional abuse, in addition to Ms. Kate and Mr. Jon.

(I used to be on Team Jon but find him severely lacking as a human being now, too. If he's got enough money to buy that chippy an engagement ring, he's got enough money to hire a top-flight attorney to put the fear of God into Kate the Shrew.)

Where oh where are the advocates for these kids? There must be someone out there with power who can step in and do something about this! These kids MUST be protected...this is ridiculous.

Just to be clear, a judge did not appoint legal guardians for her chidren. A judge appointed a guardian to examine the finances of the children only.

think what bothers me most is the way they say they will show the parents in "new relationships" with others...or something to that effect. IMO to show them dating so soon after a split up is just irresponsible. Shouldn't this pair of nitwits take time to be alone? I know after my divorce I needed time just to collect myself. I think to show them dating...and around the kids just shows how LOW TLC and these parents will go. This show should just end.

TLC made sure to show that 10 year old girl's plea to not show what she said...you guessed it...on TV! They did not care about her feelings AT ALL. They did it to make her look like a spoiled brat ( which she was, but the kid realized it and wanted to take her words back ).
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

I have seen TLC do this to Mady and some of the other kids too when they put their hand over the camera lens because they do not want the camera on them. They make sure to show this on tv. Their is no respect for these children. If an adult did not want to be shown on camera, such as the Gosselin's babysitter, that seems to be respected. If J&K said something they wanted edited, I am sure it would be, even though Kate says they do not do this. If it were one of the children, I'll be willing to bet that it gets on tv! TLC is terrible!

----------------------------

Just so you know, I started out that original comment as a rebuttal to a negative post, possibly by a sheeple, which was apparently removed while I was writing, so I'm sure it seemed out of context on this topic.

Jake, I read all your good comments and I hope you're right about the kids not wanting or needing to research their childhood history...reliving the pain. Maybe everything will turn out all right for them. If not, perhaps somebody like Jodi and Kevin will have printed out the best parts for them from GWoP or other sites...a scrapbook if you will, only to be handed to them if they are agonizing and have questions. What I mean by the "best parts," are the kind, thoughtful and from-the-heart comments from people who wrote in with concern for the kids and their exploited childhoods...strangers who had their best interests in mind and were worried for them.

I probably could have worded my post differently. "Snarky" wasn't the best adjective, as I tend to scan over criticisms about boobs, babes, hair and Harleys…as much as sometimes they can provoke a smile when discussing a migraine-inducing subject (although, yes, at the expense of Jon and Kate, which isn’t very nice).

A lot of us likely comment from personal experience. Mine is that kids will grow up and want answers in adulthood for certain unresolved issues from childhood. Whatever the conflict or questions, they'll dig. They’ll ask other family members and do just about anything for truth (can’t blame them). I have personally sat for so long looking through microfilm of old newspapers at the library that I thought my eyes would never un-blur. It's mired in identity and a whole bag of emotions. (You can bury things so that everybody can get along, but only for so long, because you have to get on with your life. “The truth will set you free.”) Until they get right with their past, it's hard for anybody to move forward into the future. Even Jon said something akin to, "My kids will google me some day." Maybe he knows them better than we do. Certainly we've seen in Mady one bright, inquiring little girl, and that's just one of eight examples.

No matter if they relentlessly press for explanation and details about every aspect of their childhood fame, disappear to a foreign country for anonymity, or become President of the United States, the consensus...the majority opinion...leans toward the Gosselin children having emotional "damage" to deal with later on in life. All so unnecessary when life is hard enough! I feel badly for them. We all do. That's why we're here. It keeps us from tearing our hair out while Jon and Kate continue to appear on web homepages, magazines at the stores we shop in and on our televisions, even after we’ve deleted TLC from our channel line-ups. Discussion on GWoP might help fan the fire of their fame but at least there’s an exchange of info here to also provoke action (i.e., contact sponsors, etc.). In the long run, I don’t think it’s a draw. A collective cry for a change in law for the rights of reality show child actors is an honorable endeavor.

The parents won't save their children. Jon says about cameras in his kids faces "they are fine with it, this is their normal, they don't work, they just play" and Kate just grimaces and says "the show must go on", she thinking about the cost of her fake boobs and fake tan and fake public appearances, keeping up these fake appearances while foresaking her children's privacy, health and emotional stability. The pair are so moronic they keep clinging to this notion that as long as their kids appear healthy, fed and clothed (in matchy match outfits) they are being responsible parents. If they really gave a shit they'd ditch the fake tan, fake boobs, fake drama and just embrace their children, be truly thankful to god and try to do some good in this world. But this is Jon and Kate, the stupidest parents on earth.

Eileen O'Neill is a shark. She's a typical network suit with few, if any, scruples or standards.

While most intelligent observers see a true tragedy happening in front of our eyes, O'Neill sees only a ratings bonanza. And since she's relatively new at the TLC helm (what is it? 18 months as the boss?), J and K + 8 is her Big Ticket to corporate success and "glory."

I think some of us make the mistake of looking at O'Neill as a woman first -- perhaps a woman with children or nieces and nephews of her own. But, in this context, she's not a woman first. She is a network suit; and a network suit is a particular species long maligned in TV culture. Rightfully so. For some great examples, read the machinations that went on when Johnny Carson announced plans to retire, and Dave Letterman and Jay Leno wanted to succeed him. The promises that were made, then broken, to both men, the lies, the selfish maneuverings and attempted manipulations, all that crap are great examples of TV network suits in full Cover Their Asses mode. Even top talent like Letterman and Leno were treated like collateral-damage garbage, with the network execs not really caring about them as people or as talent their network should work diligently to keep.

The only way the Gosselin show will be discontinued is if the ratings drop significantly and people grow bored with the entire mess. Unfortunately, however, it seems to me that both Kate and Jon, separately, are busy manipulating and scheming to get themselves their OWN reality shows down the line. Let's hope the kids will be seen very, very seldom on those shows.

It's gotten that I cannot watch any TLC anymore, which is a darn shame, because I like some of their programming. The Little Couple, What Not to Wear, some of those weirdass Mystery Diagnosis and I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant things. But every single freakin' show is packed with commercials for the Gosselin show, and I have grown to despise these people. I couldn't care less about Kate whining about pitching tents or Jon pretending to supervise kitchen upgrades. I don't believe a WORD either husband or wife says anymore. They are liars and schemers, and their eight precious kids are fast becoming The Lost Children of the Wernersville Sudan.

What about a "letter writing campaign" to Figure 8 Films, the production company who actually films, edits and produces the show, asking them to stop the madness?

TLC airs the show but pays Figure 8 to create it.

And this is from Figure 8's President:

We are storytellers. Accuracy is very important, as is sensitivity and respect for our subjects and our audience. Primarily, we tell stories about incredible people and challenging situations.

We consider ourselves "caretakers" of these people's stories. We are obliged to these people for allowing us into their lives. Quite often, when I ask our prospective characters why are they willing to do so, they tell me, "If I can help one other person get through a similar situation, then it's worth it”. We are fortunate that so many people are willing to share their stories and their experiences.

We hope we can help make the world a more understanding place through the telling and dissemination of these stories. We believe we can make a difference if we try.

It is a privilege and an honor to do this work. We are allowed to meet all kinds of amazing people - many of whom become lifelong friends. We see unbelievable sights - some which actually make it to tape - and we learn all sorts of interesting things on a daily basis - some which we actually remember.

Thanks for visiting our website. We hope you enjoy our shows and encourage you to contact us if you know of an important story that needs telling.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
You summed this up beautifully. And hit the nail on the head - TLC (or any of the networks really) don't think/care about what is right or wrong anymore - it's the almighty bottom dollar

I remember an episode in the new house (I think) - where the boys were downstairs and one of them was putting in or taking out a small toy out of a jacket. He looked at the cameraman and said something to the tune of "close your eyes" he stated it pleadingly and several times.

In other words - I'm trying to sneak something and don't want the world to see. Just like the above statement - TLC made SURE that scene made the cut and was shown.

How sad - when kids can't even be kids - oops - I thought that was premise behind this show. Silly me.

Shows with this kind of coverage will have some sort of impact on our rich American television history, either as a tabloid show starring a bunch of nothings and fools, amazing the general public with their crazy antics and stupidity, or as a show which the public will remember as being one of heart and love starring people who quietly affect and influence the greater good with their humility and compassion. I bet the farm on the former.

Get over yourself, Eileen O'Neill!! Stop counting your bucks and think about those 8 innocent children! You are getting another polite but nasty email from me momentarily because I cannot believe you would stoop so low as to exploit INNOCENT CHILDREN'S PAIN to make a buck for TLC. How would YOU like it if YOU were going through a divorce and someone had a tv camera in your kids' faces the whole time? I'm sure you have lots of little interviews lined up with the twins to ask them how they feel about Mommy and Daddy's divorce, and you're going to pump that as your promo for this upcoming season!

I am frankly appalled that Eileen O'Neill has not been fired for perpetuating this circus. What goes around comes around, Ms. O'Neill. Soon, if there is any justice for these poor kids, you will get yours.

You know, I understand that there is a market out there for trash TV (please, no offense to anyone who watches J&K, I know how that can happen). I mean, there's always been the Jerry Springer, Hulk Hogan type shows and they do have an audience. But what makes me sad and just plain sick is that now trash TV has included children to pull in audiences and that there are people who will watch. J&K have no morals, no class, and will do anything for money and people like O'Neill take advantage of that. I just wish that people would consider the children before watching this tastless supposedly 'documentary' of their precious little lives.

The other thing that bothers me is that from the very beginning Kate has always tried to "normalize" abnormal situations with her "aren't all families like this" or "doesn't everyone do it this way" comments. I'm not saying that divorce is abnormal (I was divorced w/small children a lifetime ago), but I fear she will now use this show to "normalize" divorce. Shouldn't divorce be something we, as a nation, are working on rather than promoting? I'm probably not making sense as I can't seem to articulate what I'm thinking. Sorry for the long post.

This doesn't highlight their new shows; it draws all the attention back to KON and that they are An Item.

O'Neill will keep her job as long as TLC continues to have rating hikes. As soon as their numbers go down, she will be fired - which is the standard for all TV execs. They take the blame and they fall when the network falls - just like her predecessor.

Welcome back, HannaBelleLechter (I borrowed your excellent parting line as my header, thanks in advance). More good comments from you about the future of the Gosselin reality show. I agree with your comment about "the network execs not really caring about them as people." Jon and Kate may have a false sense of security and better not count on TLC's warm, fuzzy blanket. I worked for network suits and so has my husband; it's a cold, cold business. Power, money, fame at the upper levels; they are big wheeler-dealers, make no mistake. The business itself is fickle and ruthless. As my husband says, "If you bring in the numbers (ratings), you're a hero. If you don't, you're the goat." They only care about people who are successful; look out if you start to fall. You're playing with the big boys (uh, and girls).

Whoa, whoa The Gosselin Children are like The Lost Children of Sudan?
That is going a little too far, I agree that there are very serious concerns relating to the Gosselin children and the continued filming of J&K+8 but to compare them to the Lost Children of Sudan, most of who were orphaned, starved, beaten, shot at, attacked and even raped during a horrific civil war spanning 23 years is unrealistic. The Gosselin children have never experience any of these violent situations, true they are not in an ideal situation but ask a child born in Sudan if they would rather live with Jon and Kate or stay in Sudan I guarantee the Lost Children of Sudan would pick Jon and Kate.
I feel deeply for the Gosselin Children, I think the show needs to be stopped. I think Jon, Kate and the Children need counselling. However making hyperbolic statements such as the aforementioned detracts from the matter at hand, getting the children out of their fishbowl of a home!

temper tantrums, all those punishments, all those times when they were being yelled at or waved away, the comments their parents made while sitting on the couch... hey kids, do you want more of the same to go out into the air waves? Remember children, all of America has witnessed these things!
How about another season? We could watch Mady get her first crush, Cara's team lose a really close championship game, _____ fail a grade, _____ bring a note home from a teacher, ____ gets into a sister's diary, everyone get told about the birds and the bees, the twins shop for their first bras, etc. We could all get really close to our TV sets and watch the reactions of the children as the entire world tunes in.

Yep, that's entertainment.

I bet they'd say no. And I'd bet they would have the right to say no. It's THEIR lives.

Wake up parents. These are your children we're talking about.

Bill Hayes President of figure 8 productions said, "Primarily, we tell stories about incredible people and challenging situations."

I ask you where do you see Jon & Kate as "incrediable people"?? They are mere greed mongers and that is not "incrediable", just ordinary run of the mill low life greed.

Telling stories about "challenging situations", PLEASE give me a break!! There has been nothing challenging in their lives thanks to TLC in many years. Oh do you mean the challange of where to go for the next frebie vacation, now that is a challenge. Or is it "fake camping" all alone with a camera crew of many , in the back yard. The viewing public is much smarter than Mr. Hayes and TLC too. We are on to all of you greedy Tv types.

It needs to stop right now. These children have already payed a heavy price for their parents greed. Save the Gosselin 8!!!!!

An Article from Long Island Newsday by TV Zone writer Verne Gay
last paragraph on the return of "Jon&Kate' plus hate? It may be a split decision.

"Bottom Line:...TLC doesn't have a clue how the biggest show in its history will resolve. But resolve it will. However, fans of "J&K"
-I do not count myself as one
-have asked themselves the obvious questions. to you REALLY want to see this divorce play out? Hasn't the grotesque tabloid crush reduced this whole thing to a tawdry mess? Is this what you signed up for 5 years ago?"

Encouraging to see that local news is also picking up on the total farce that this show has evolved into.

Replying to penny's post here of 8/03/2009, 3:24 PM, in which she commented on my entry:

penny, I was using the time-honored, literary construct called poetic license. Surely you've heard of poetic license? From answers.com: n. The liberty taken by an artist or a writer in deviating from conventional form or fact to achieve a desired effect.

As a professional editor for decades, I've never met anyone who didn't understand the pinpoint reasons for using poetic license.

My point in using "The Lost Children of the Wernersville Sudan"-reference regarding the Gosselin 8 was that, as I see their current situation, the Gosselin children are lost and wandering in an emotional wasteland. My comparison was a figurative one. My use of poetic license was to pinpoint the overwhelming sadness of the Gosselin 8, lost in their parents' selfishness and myopia.

If you thought I was literally comparing the Gosselin kids to the Lost Boys of the Sudan, you need to take a breath. Really.

Further, you negate your own gravitas when you write things like this:

QUOTE from penny: "The Gosselin children have never experience any of these violent situations, true they are not in an ideal situation but ask a child born in Sudan if they would rather live with Jon and Kate or stay in Sudan I guarantee the Lost Children of Sudan would pick Jon and Kate."

Since when can you or anyone guarantee what another person might choose when given options in life? We're all enigmas, and we cannot speak for anyone but ourselves. Even in that silly and ridiculous hypothetical of whether Sudanese children would prefer living with Jon and Kate as opposed to their own Homeland, your guarantee that the kids would clamor to move to Wernersville, PA, is provincial, narrow-minded and ill-informed. JMHO, of course.

Not only is TLC at fault for this crap, but so are the parents. It is real simple. Jon and Kate could just say NO!!!
I hate them both for their behaviors, and even more for their parenting ways. Gosh I really feel for those 8 little blessings!!! They don't deserve TLC and they certainly don't deserve their parents!

--------------------------------
I remember in an old episode that Kate spoke of him as "this wonderful man who came into our life."

Look, even "neutral" articles, such as on the web, seem to be written with subtle hints of sarcasm about Jon and Kate. Their credibility is blown. They did it to themselves with the Deanna photos and the Steve thing. They've tweaked and manipulated "the story" so much that the public sees right through it. Kate isn't likeable and Jon hasn't put himself in a good light. I'm sure the ratings are going to sink. I've been in box store or grocery store lines where people shake their heads in disgust or disdain when thumbing through the tabloid magazines. It's over. These television shows cost too much money to produce. If the show can't command the big advertising dollars from sponsors because ratings are down and those companies know they're not getting the visibility for their product they could get if they advertised somewhere else, the show becomes a liability for the producers. Ya gotta have money to run the show, folks! These networks want heavily-watched shows so they can charge the big bucks to Hersheys, Coleman and all those other companies mentioned here. For TLC, just like Jon and Kate themselves, it's about MONEY, honey!!

I have a question. O'Neill states that TLC has been filming for the last four years, 100 episodes. That's not true, is it? The tups just turned 5 in May and obviously she wasn't counting the upcoming season 5. That would mean they had to be filming since the day they were born. I know they did a documentary show when they were little, and then another one a year later; but everything else I have read inclulding Jodi and Kevin's statement says they did 100 shows in 2 years, not 4. I just feel that TLC never stops lying. Do you think they said that to make it look better? I did read on an MSNBC site that Jon and Kate film more shows per season than any other reality show has ever filmed.

I used to watch ... never again. As I recall, one of the reasons that the Gosselins gave for doing the show back in the beginning was to document the story of their lives for their children.

How nice of them to document this childhood event ... the disintegration of their family.

TLC should be ashamed. Jon and Kate should be ashamed. Anyone who is watching should be ashamed.

I'll never watch again.

I think now would be a good time for the Mods to repost that entry about the best places (and how) online to let advertisers and those "in the know" that they have lost viewers and customers because of this.

I think the post was a month or so ago. I can't remember the names of the websites that were included in the post.

Well if you would exploit 8 children for money...why not exploit a divorce? Better yet...fake a happy marriage and then exploit the fake breakup and give the kids a bunch of free stuff to balance it out??? TLC makes me sick. Jon just came out and verified everything Kevin and Jodi said. Kate told him she was done a year ago. TLC knew this family was in trouble from the beginning. They didn't care. Eileen O'Neill only cares about MONEY. That's it. Ratings and money. Period. For as long as Kate is greedy and selfish and allows them to exploit those children they will do whatever they can manipulate to get ratings and money. If the American people want to watch a show where a diva puts up a tent in her mansion's yard and makes smores for her priviledged children...then I say it's pretty sad. What, exactly, am I learning? I'm learning that TLC has completely lost touch. Maybe they should be politicians.

TLC---You should really try to edit out the scenes where kate has her abuse weapon (aka-red spoon) laying on the counter. Everyone knows what it is used too. Congrats on helping a family fall into complete shambles! You must be so proud! I thought that TLC stood for The Learning Channel. The only thing viewers are learning is how to be horrible parents and how to turn a relationship into a failure. Screw u!

"iconic couch"?

The whole publicity release makes me want to vomit.

We arrived home from vacation on Sunday [after a whole week without TV YAY-we were camping] and one of the first commercials we saw was a J&K - my daughter grabbed the remote and remarked "Now I know why I didn't miss television."

She clicked it off.

Disgusting O'Neill - just atrocious.

TLC: The Lying Channel

I can't believe The Ludicrous Channel has the nerve to release something like this.

I thought the show was already a train wreck...but somehow the train wreck managed to explode while leaking nuclear radiation.

I don't watch much TLC (just What Not To Wear, really) and I don't even think I can tune into that anymore.

Just...appalling.
