Kate's Birthday Surprise - Monday, June 1

The kids have a special surprise in store for Kate's birthday and they're soliciting the help of professional baker Duff Goldman! Will Kate enjoy this tasty, messy surprise? How will Duff handle the chaos of having eight little helpers join his bakery?

Let's see if they eat any of it.

I sincerely doubt Kate will touch any of it.

Gotta keep the bikini bod, ya know.

Gee. Does this show have anything to do with promoting another show, "Cakeboss?"

neal said...

I am pretty shocked that she is going to go it alone. Any objective viewer would be seriously questioning whether she is a good person if she forcefully drove her husband and children's father out. As for whether she can make it on her own, of course she can. But should she. Should the kids have to be without dad just so they can wear cool threads and have a fat house?

I guess we are at the end of the line here - people do truly value money over love.

I love it!

Oh, woe is me. I have to bake my own birthday cake every year, like every other mom on the planet. Maybe if you hadn't given up on Jon so fast, you two could have been getting stronger by now and he would have bought/baked you a birthday cake.

Marissa said...

Why wouldn't TLC have Kate and kids visit the bakery from their new show? It doesn't make sense to visit Charm City Cakes and promote a show on a different channel when you have a competing show on your own channel.

tallblonde said...

Gosh, it's nice that since it's the children that are working & earning all the money - they can take their unemployed mother out for her birthday.

Sweet

I actually dont understand why TLC would do a crossover show with Ace of Cakes, since the show is not only on another network, but TLC has Cakeboss, which seems pretty much based on the premise of AoC. Why promote the show you're competing for viewership with?

KiSSy said...

Cakeboss is a different show. Duff is Ace of Cakes.

I betcha Duff has some interesting comments about Kate. Can't wait to see how Mary Alice handles the brood...should be interesting.

I willing to put money on Kate acting like a complete and utter ingrate.

KiSSy said...

I think the cross over is a matter of convenience. Ace of Cakes is in Baltimore...an easy drive from The KonPound.

I'm not going to watch, but I am looking forward to reading the recap here :-)

no way am i going to watch this garbage. i gave in to temptation last week, but it won't happen again. tonight will be more pretend smiles and acting like everything is honky-dory. i'll wait for the recap, which is generally better than the actual episode anyway.

jen said...

I agree it doesn't make sense for TLC not to cross promote with their new show Cake Boss.

I still am not going to watch. The show has lost meaning to me. I watched last week 'cause I was at a friend's house and she is a sheeple! I never thought I'd meet one but she was one for sure! Agreeing with Kate and even saying Mady was such a horrible, bad kid! I tried explaining how Mady was just dealing with her controlling mother but my friend was hearing none of it.

I will probably watch it on youtube late but honestly, the show is kind of boring to me now.

Is it true that Jon and Kate are listed as producers this season?

I for one am still not watching this one or any other! The re-cap is quite enough for me thank you very much...
Hope those ratings drop every week!

her pretending not to know a van was coming and that stupid ' oh my" in the commercial makes me gag.

In reality, Jon normally would be the one that would take them to this and let them have fun. When the kids attempted to do this is the "cupcake" episode, she was horrible with them.
Such fakes TLC and she are- the fake laughter, the interaction with the kids and the other people. Only on this season, never before.

Jana said...

I won't be watching either. And now I'll be crossing Ace of Cakes off my list of shows too. Sorry Duff and Mary Alice - I love you guys but you (Duff) should have enough clout on TFN to tell them "no" when they suggested this cross-promotional show. Dude - should have done a little homework.

Merrilee said...

Betcha the kids WILL eat the cake this time around, no matter how icky Kate really thinks it is.

She sure as heck doesn't want another Cupcakegate.

Not A BM Fan said...

It will all be on You Tube, so I don't need to watch even if I did want to.

Also, you know, Kate's Best Friend Forever (BM) makes it very convenient to find things on her most-amazingly-wonderfully-wonderful new web site.

That woman is nuttier than Kate! Yuk!

ManicNarcissism said...

Food network and TLC are owned by same mother company - atleast that what a fellow gwoper found out.

So it is sort of like toilet paper. The same company puts out low quality, medium quality, and high quality. Why compete with themself you might say? Well really they aren't because people who are used to soft triple ply don't buy low grade and people who use cost as the only factor will never buy tp that cost 3 times as much. It isn't competition it is more market share.

care4the8 said...

Yup. Everyone goes to Charm City Cakes to get a birthday cake. It's what normal families do you know.

Level Head said...

Kate's bday surprise is that no one has tarred and feathered her yet. Nor has she been put on a stake.

Give it time.......

I wonder if she really gets it that half the people who watch this show do it for a laugh? - i.e. to laugh at her. Never mind of course that she is probably the worst "tv mother" ever. Heck, even Roseanne actually liked her kids and listened to what they had to say!!!

I think more appropriate behaviour for this birthday would be staying home in the basement with the curtains drawn and the covers over her head, to be honest.

She should be ashamed of the mess she has made.

Level Head said...

Oh, may be someone has tarred and feathered her - that's what's wrong with her hair! LOL!!

AnneMarie said...

Not thrilled with the cleanliness of that shop to start with, let alone allowing 8 kids Plus Kate, Plus a crew in the back.

No problem Not watching this one either. Golly they just keep making it easier to turn it off.

Rap541 said...

"Yup. Everyone goes to Charm City Cakes to get a birthday cake. It's what normal families do you know."

More importantly, how many cakes do the kids need? Seems like they had birthday cakes at their party.... Not begrudging the kids cake, but really - the more they get used to the money, the more difficult it will be when it's gone.

Penny Pengleton said...

You know, you probably shouldn't watch on YouTube. If TLC is smart enough to have webisodes on their site, they are definitely smart enough to see if they get a lot of hits on YouTube. It's just more persuasion to them that there is interest in the show and that they should keep it.

Michelle said...

Yes, I think Discovery Networks own all of the channels. Another "woe is me" moment for Kate. In the episode, she tries to make a funny comment and she's copying Emmeril's "kick it up a notch", another nod to them doing a show together!!! When will all of this be over?

WPA said...

Why isn't Jon there for her birthday?

Why does she act surprised when a "bus/van" pull up? The kids arranged the trip to the cake shop? Not believable.

Who travels all that distance to get a cake?

Kate's boo hooing about making her own cake is pathetic.

On the season opener which is on again for the upteenth time - Why did TLC put a male interviewer over the female one? Was this one of Kate's demands?

actually, Food Network, HGTV and Fine Living network are owned by Scripps Network Group. TLC, Discovery, Animal Planet, Travel, and ID are all owned by Discovery Network Group. (I used to work in cable advertising and I've worked with reps from all of these networks, and had to get to know their programming pretty well in order to sell the ad space).

if this is Ace of Cakes, that is really strange that they would let them cross-promote with a Scripps Network show. networks NEVER do this with shows outside of their network group. for example, Nickelodeon, which is an MTV Network (with Comedy Central, MTV, VH1, etc), has very strict rules about advertising their shows on Cartoon Network, which falls under the Turner Networks umbrella (with CNN, TNT, TBS. etc).

I recently inquired about getting a cake from Charm City Cakes and the minimum fee for one of their cakes starts at $1,000 and goes up from there.

Tessa said...

From Charm City Cakes website...

Due to the care we give to each cake and the one-of-a-kind nature of each order, we require a minimum of $1000 on all of our cakes.

Isn't that lovely, being able to afford a cake that cost, at a minimum, $1000. Puts my daughter's $25.00 Thomas the Train cake from Publix to shame. But when she saw the cake and said, "Thomas!!" it was genuine.

Penny Pengleton said...

That's not really unreasonable for the time, talent and equipment that goes into a cake like that. Plus, as with any brand, you pay more for names. I do cake decoration and I charge a minimum of $400 for a basic wedding cake. The supplies alone cost more than you'd think, plus the time! Hours and hours.

KidsRthePriority said...

I remember Jodi saying that TLC had Kate come up with a wish list for future episodes. Guess she wanted a cake from AoC.

Maybe someone could get ahold of the list and supplement it with "reconcile with husband", "provide loving home and privacy to children", "learn what life's real priorities should be", etc.

..................................

I don't have a problem with the cost of the cake, I have a problem with Kate Gosselin feeling it is appropriate (even though she is not paying for it) to get one of these cakes. How many of those people who gave $25.00 "love offerings" could afford a cake of this type?

For me, it's little comments about being a mom. The thing about birthdays not being fun for the mom, but fun for the kids was a perfect example of why she is NOT living her life for her kids, but for HERSELF!

When my brother and I were younger we told our dad we wanted to go to Chuck E. Cheese for his birthday... and that's where we went! It wasn't about him, but he always remembers it as one of his favorite birthdays because he spent it watching his kids have fun. I have kids of my own now, and I am never happier than spending the day with my kids, even if I have to make a cake to make the day more special for them.

yeahimwatching said...

is jon there with her? Who does she keep looking atto the left during the interview?

Anonymous said...

Ok, I'll admit it. I flipped over there for about 30 seconds and it was the most awkward painful 30 seconds I've felt in a long time. Kate is not a good actress at all and the amount of fakery that was going on in just those 30 seconds was nauseating. Oh, and it looks like it's going to be another Kate and The Van for Plus Eight Back Up and Run Over Jon again. Just when I think Kate can't get whinier and more spoiled and selfish, I just have to flip back over to The Lying Channel for about 5 seconds and I'll be corrected. So sad...I used to love Duff and crew. Now I can never watch AoC again.

BarbMae said...

I am definitely not watching. Kate has turned into a pretty good actress. In the early days she actually did care what her children did, but in the previews I have seen her "acting" is just so over the top it is ridiculous. I did succumb and watch the rerun of last week's episode tonight, but found myself everytime Kate was on the interview couch somehow my middle finger would automatically come up and the word bi**h came out of my mouth. Talk about Tourettes syndrome. He! He! It was so uncontrollable. I hope that Jon will stay in the filming for the kids sake. The kids alone filming with Kate will be total exploitation of these kids. IMO the Mady, Kate trip is just a farce that TLC made up to counter the Jon and Cara trip. Again, the most telling sign was when Mady said she was only taking one family picture and stayed true to her word and left immediately when the picture was taken. I will enjoy the recap of tonight's episodes on this site since I definitely won't be watching. I don't want to risk my middle finger and that word coming out of my mouth. Take care!

Snerk said...

Lies, obfuscation, greed, and materialism run amock. Yeah, TLC wants to play people for fools every week. A seven year old should be able to see through their pretense.

i find it odd that jon is wearing the same outfit as last week...

long time reader, first time poster....What the hell is with her hooker shoes? Those are the least practical shoes she could be wearing, especially she "doesn't" know where they are going. What a moron!

In the beginning of the cake episode...why are the sextuplets STILL WEARING BIBS?? Can they not eat without spilling all over themselves yet?

I also think it's unfortunate that Jon is off in Utah for her birthday, leaving her "alone" with the children. I am glad though that he was working with that center for the disabled kids and helping them ski. Yay Jon.

Kater Hater said...

wow just now when she is on the couch making those awful faces and noises, really captures her as a person. NOT the children. I didn't see the children in that light at all. They all looked happy and delightful. That was pure Kate Gosselin. GROSS

What in the world would Figure 8 do without input from this board? So far, those of us who are not boycotting have seen Kate's wedding ring in close up shot, we've learned that John's in Utah either because he has a "passion" for snow boarding OR...he's helping disadvantaged kids on the slopes and it looks like this time around, everyone might get cake!

Since they obviously can't put an episode together w/out all of us...they should be paying US.

ok. i gave into temptation. :S i saw the last minute or two. glad i skipped the whole 1st part!!! it was bad. and sad. and BAD.

kate never once said 'thank you'. nor did she instruct/remind her kids to say it.

and why are they editing out jon in the interview? in the kate close-ups? she looks to her side. still zoomed in. yet when they pan out, you see him. PUH-LEASE. lol ...picking sides much?????

Shari said...

I'm proud to say I didn't watch and don't plan to. From the comments alone, I can already tell that Kate expected it to be all about her and the things she deserves on her special day but was stuck having to pretend to celebrate it with her kids. I have no interest in watching a grown woman act like a spoiled brat on her birthday.

This year on my 37th birthday we took our kids Christmas caroling with our church and it was my favorite birthday so far.

How are kids supposed to learn self-less-ness if all they see is selfishness?

I for one will be closely watching the clothing. For some reason - I thought I remember some "oops" moments from last weeks opener. You will soon be able to really tell how much splicing is going into each episode

Jon, in explaining how he wanted to go to Utah for 5 days to do some more snowboarding -

"It just happened to be on Kate's birthday".

TLC is really arrogant to come up with that one and also to feed him the line that he came to Utah to help disabled kids with snowboarding/skiing.
Yeah, right.

Anyone notice how Kate didnt complain about be exhausted when it was just her with the kids? Good editing TLC. It's funny how they showed her complaining over and over and OVER again last episode. I guess they read the blogs and realized they had made a huge mistake. Edit her REAL personality out and only show her fake "please the fan" (that of course she now is grateful for bc everyone else can see through her) side. We aren't stupid..... I also love how Jon is being shown in such a better light this episode. TLC make up your minds with these characters!

Mr. Gray was with them at the cake place. He was shown at the very end, his face blurred out.

I was tempted to watch the show, even hit the record button on the DVR. My daughter flipped it on and I saw one of the little girls walking past the camera and couldn't watch it. I told her to turn it off and I canceled the DVR recording of the show. I really cannot watch it any more, it really is morally wrong to continue watching these children being exploited by their rotten parents. (kate more than jon) I haven't liked kate for a long time but watched anyway, probably because I could not stand her, which is twisted if you think about it.

Bye-bye TLC. I know without a doubt that your darling kate is rotten to the core and I no longer have that need to tune in and watch just how wicked she will be this week. That is it for this household. Those kids are too precious for me to give you my hit/view in your numbers.

They are reading the blogs. Hannah didn't get candy because she didn't eat dinner. A direct response to those complaining about the cupcake birthday show where she got a cupcake and she did not eat much dinner.
Jon is wearing the same outfit as last week because the interview was recently taped.

I won't watch said...

I did not watch, but I did see the previews of both shows. Kate's voice in the previews reminds me of a screeching Minnie Mouse. It also sounds forced and phony. And the poor me, I have to make my own cake thing. Boo hoo. Then there's the sad sack scene with her and Mady on the beach. Poor dear Kate. I had no intention of watching and viewing the previews certainly didn't make me want to see either of the shows.

Someone said that they saw the end and Kate didn't thank Charm City Cakes or tell the kids to. She did and told the kids too and asked that they give the staff hugs, the kids did.

Her smugness and negativity are sickening. I'd like to think that most parents describing any art project made by their children would probably not include the word vomitous. Not sure exactly the phrase she used because the show was only on for 10 seconds, before Kate made me "vomitous?". A positive stament to a child might be something like, "It looks like rainbows having a pary together". It's just not THAT hard to use an activity as a time to give praise and positive reinforcement. Jodi did it all the time. Why doesn't Jon take his sons skiing with him? They're certainly old enough and what a great bonding experience that would be.

lisa K said...

This may have been mentioned before but I will say it again....Did anyone think this was also an attempt to clean up the cupcake nightmare of last season? I did. I thought this was one the most staged shows yet. I didn't even finish watching the second show of the hour, because I was sick to death of Kate's whining.

jenn said...

Seriously?! Charm City Cakes?!

Kate is a really good actress. "Oh, I just don't know where we're going." Whatever. She managed to wear a pink silk cami (while the other kids were wearing long sleeved shirts -- looked cold and rainy) and pink heels, and her cake just happened to be pink. She knew.

This is all getting a little old. Troubles at home? Have one parent home while the other is away. Heaven forbid your kids should see you in the same place at the same time. I wish I could jet off to Park City or San Diego when things get difficult around the house, but I guess I'm not a member of the "average" family. I mean, after all, Jon and Kate are the "average" family just trying to make it, right? Am I correct in assuming that every "average" family can buy a million dollar home, plus a condo in Utah, and jet off to exotic locations whenever they need a break?

I find all of this to be incredibly inappropriate. They're flaunting their money in front of the public in the middle of a recession. Does that make me a jealous person? Sure. Who wouldn't be a little envious when you see two greedy, immature parents getting paid thousands and thousands of dollars for being stupid. And they're putting all of their marital problems on t.v.! Do you really want your kids to see that? It's wrong.

And Kate insists that all of this is for the kids. Really? Airing your dirty laundry on t.v. is benefiting your kids? Tossing 30 paper plates per day into the trash that will sit in a landfill when you're supposedly "going green" is good for your kids? Making your little ones wear bibs (demeaning for that age) because you can't use a little stain remover is done for your kids? Manicures, pedicures, tan skin, hair coloring, snowboards, and new cars are all for the kids?

Get a life.

My gawd that woman's laugh is like someone scraping their nails across a chalkboard.

She is way way way over-trying to clean up her nasty image. Last year she was a sourpuss and rude to the cupcake people, and this time she is Miss Merry Sunshine? Maybe because these people were celebrities and the other ladies were just peons?

I think between the cake and spa footage from March, and the couch interviews recently, somewhere in there she packed about 10 pounds back on. Not that she's fat, but not rail thin like she was for a month or two. She looks back to her old-house size....plus two new friends up top of course.

Well, here's one good thing that has come from this show -- some good discussions with my daughter, age almost-14, who loves this show. Since I discovered this blog (only a few days ago) she and I have had some talks about child exploitation, and spousal abuse, and what a child needs to be happy (NOT fancy vacations and huge houses), etc.

We've also talked about the "power of the consumer" and she sat down at the TV tonight with pen and paper next to her -- she said "Mom, I'm going to write down every commercial so we can write to those companies and tell them what we think."

Good for my daughter! (love her very much... :) ) --- and, feel so sorry for those poor Gosselin kids. My home state is PA and I hope the PA Labor Dept. can save them from all this. :(

I didn't watch tonight's episodes and it wasn't because of outrage, ratings, etc. I simply don't care anymore. Jon and Kate are so pathetic, I can't muster an ounce of care for what dance these two circus monkeys are doing for TLC tonight.

Can we please stop comparing Jon & Kate + 8 with scripted shows? Yes, Kate is probably the worst TV mother ever but she, Jon and her children are not characters on a scripted show.

Roseanne Barr was portraying a fictional mom with actors portraying her fictional family. All the actors involved got the leave the set each day and return to their regular lives and homes.

The Gosselin children do not have that luxury.

HiThere said...Jon, in explaining how he wanted to go to Utah for 5 days to do some more snowboarding -

"It just happened to be on Kate's birthday".

TLC is really arrogant to come up with that one and also to feed him the line that he came to Utah to help disabled kids with snowboarding/skiing.

Yeah, right.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I did not watch tonight. Are you telling us that TLC wants us to believe Jon was in Utah (coincidentally on his wife's birthday) in order to help disabled kids with skiing? No, the cover-up can't be that blatant can it?
TLC, you're not only transparent but transparent in a totally ridiculous way. Cut it out.
I watched and put my comments on the wrong thread! Thought I was in here.
I do cakes as well, and charm city cakes are worth more than a grand usually buy not Kate's! That was embarassing to come out of charm city. They either hate her or they got a call about 2 hours ahead of time and pulled some generic fridge cakes out and put her name on it in gumpaste real quick.
She had to be disappointed. If someone told me I was getting a cake from there and then that is what I got I would be crushed and I'm not a narcy hag. Just you expect a certain difficulty level and unique creativity from them. I think that is why she said let's kick it up a notch and make them wild but she didn't get her wish.
If anyone knows kates birthday let me know.
So, any sightings of "Babe" in Utah? Deanna's friends said that she went out to Utah with Jon, at the end of March...so, she was there!...This was filmed before he got caught with the teacher, but after his partying with college coeds.
But, wasn't the playhouse just delivered a few weeks ago? At about the same time as the OCC guys came over.
I caught the end of the episode...where they were taking photos in the cake shop...and sure enough right behind the guy taking photos WAS STEVE NEILD! Of course. One can even see Kate smiling sweetly to her boyfriend....I am SURE this is the reason they went to Baltimore...Mr. Neild lives there...well, at least he did. Seems he lives with Kate now. She is never without him...
I did watch the show. I have to say, my husband and I both laughed out loud when Jon said that he was on vacation and it "just happened" to be over Kate's birthday. Come on. The guy has no job except the show. He could go on vacation at any time, he chose to be gone on her birthday. Not that I blame him, of course. He probably didn't want to be around for another cupcakegate. He needn't have worried though. Kate was so sticky sweet about the cake stuff this time would have caused cavities if it wasn't for her being filled with artificial sweeteners instead of the real thing.
You betcha.I went out to their site and found some FAQs in the 'Order' section:
"How much are your cakes?
Because all of our cakes are priced individually by the complexity of their design, we do not have a standard price list.
Due to the care we give to each cake and the one-of-a-kind nature of each order, we require a minimum of $1000 on all of our cakes."
Ha ha ha! Astute observation.
Like you, I thought their personalities (Kate and Buddy) are too similarly strong and might not be a good fit.
Someone else pointed out that Charm City Cakes staff are big J&K+8 fans (as Mary Alice declared on tonight episode), and Kate and her kids are in turn big fans of Ace of Cakes (again, as Kate declared on the episode).
The Cake Boss crew don't seem like they would be J&K+8 fans. Plus Cake Boss is a new show, nobody would have heard of it back in March (Kate's bday).
Okay...happy the kids got to actually decorate cakes. Did they have fun? But, the Hannah thing is just further cruelty to the children for ratings. Did she actually NOT eat dinner, or where they just trying to make a point?
I am betting that Cake Boss will do a cross over with the Hayes family in the future as they are almost neighbors! Hoboken would have been far closer to Kate than Baltimore, unless other Baltimore business's were throwing in freebies, er er I mean, they were doing sightseeing down at the inner harbor.
I didn't watch either only because both episodes sounded dreadfully boring and it was a beautiful night at the Jersey Shore and I spent the evening with some cheese and wine on the beach watching the sun set.
Also, as it has been brooched before, if Kate is so worried about rumors, why hasn't Mr. Gray been reassigned to quell the rumors? If you really wanted to save your marriage you would do whatever it takes to keep it together. Kate is so over Jon and IMO feels she deserves better. Good Luck with that Kate!
Going to respectfully disagree that this show is not scripted...it may not be scripted in the way we think, like actors getting a script that they need to memorize, but it is also not reality, either..it's sort of in between....from what I can gather, I believe TLC, along with Jon and Kate, come up with an idea for the episode, and suggestions are made by TLC, Figure 8, the producers (and I don't believe Jon and Kate are listed as producers of the shows today, June 1, can someone with a DVR prove that, I don't have one) For an example, last week, we read that someone told Colin to say thank you to Kate for the birthday party....
And on a side note, I wish Kate was a fictional character, for the kids' sake, but what writer could make up someone like Kate?!
I took my son down to the beach after he was done with his final exams at school today, and let him frolic in the sand and surf. There were no camera, no P-people. I sat in the sun with my paper back book, my well earned military mommy body in my swimsuit, grey hair shining in the sunlight.
We went home to a Non-organic, but homemade from scratch dinner - my own recipies Thank you very much, and then enjoyed our nightly phonecall to DH who is far far away. Shockingly, he enjoys hearing about the silly everyday things that goes on,- how the lizard got stuck inside the car, how Billy at school hit a homerun at kickball, etc, and not just emergencies.
What a perfectly LOVELY NORMAL Gosselin Free day.
I watched tonight. Is it just me or is this new season really dragging along? Seems like the earlier shows sped by yet this doom and gloom takes forever. I couldn't even make it all the way through the second show because it was so bad.
For the cake show, I too wondered why Duff would allow such an ugly, ugly, plain cake to be shown on tv. I mean, this is also a way for him to advertise his job, and the logical thing would be to have a really great cake to show off to the public. Instead, Kate got a cake I could have decorated, and while I am not a professional, I do know how to decorate cakes.
Jon's "I did a good deed" thing just got old. I didn't pay attention, but what exactly did he do? All I noticed was that he was on his snowboard while this woman took the guy down the slope. Yet, Jon kept bragging that he was "helping" that day. What exactly did he do to help, except to give the organization a shout out on the show?
I still didn't see anyone in that family, including Kate, who was acting normal or happy. It's obvious the show is trying to fake it, but it's not working. I don't know about you, but I find it boring that we rarely see the kids and basically the show has turned into one parent or another going on vacation while the other complains about being home with the kids.
Honestly, this show is so boring now, I seriously doubt I'll be watching at all much longer.
Also, did Jon really need to go away to ski over Kate's birthday? Of all times a birthday should be a time to be together as a family and Kate was with her family but Jon just had to go help out the poor child with CP by snowboarding beside him! That was hardly volunteering his time!
I'm so happy to see how many GWOPpers didn't watch tonight! Way to go everyone!! :)
I think it would be wise to write to Duff at Charm City Cakes and let him know how you feel. I've watched his show from the beginning and he seems like a really great guy. Mary Alice, I'm sure, would read the letters as I think she tries to read them all. If she sees many emails with 'Gosselin' in the subject line, I think it would get their attention!!
Anyone and everyone who is involved in 'giving' to the Gosselins or who is inviting them on their show or into their business should get feedback from us...they have to know that by getting involved means they're contributing to the exploitation of these innocent kids. Many of these people don't even watch the show so they don't realize the full impact of what they're doing.
Just write a short, succinct letter telling them you will a) no longer watch their show or b) no longer purchase their product. I must have written a couple of dozen by now. I don't know if they're making a difference, but I'm of the mindset that if I sit back and say nothing, then I'm condoning what's going on....and I certainly don't! Thank heavens for email...eventually our voices will be heard!!
I watched and I was mostly bored. There were only a few things that stuck out to me:
1. Jon made a point to tell us that they've decided that one parent should always be home with the kids and that he is that parent most of the time. He did mention the "helpers" though which is more than "all by myself" K8 likes to do.
2. paper plates, bibs, and high chairs...need I say more?
3. K8, trying to make herself seem like a good mother spoke about her birthday and said "when you're a mom, it's not fun for you, it's fun for the kids" I think this was after she bitched about making her own cake. Grow up, K8!
4. Jon said he went skiing to "help the disabled kids and give back" The child he worked with just so happened to have cerebral palsy like Rebecca on Table for 12. Methinks someone reads these message boards.
5. While sitting on the couch, K8 made the comment that upon meeting the Charm City Cakes crew that she "apologized for acting like a fan" (Cause we all know how annoying fans are, right K8?)
6. I was glad to see K8 not freaking out while the kids were decorating their cakes (at first), but she ruined it for me when she said that the cakes looked "like a rainbow vomited" I know I always dis my child's creations on television, don't you? Then she mentioned that the kids were eating the fondant and "snarfling" (insert ridiculous noises and hand gestures here) She just made herself look bad, not the kids. She also said that the cake that the professionals made for her was "fluffily". While talking about it, she said she was hungry. (So eat another salad)
GAmom said...
Anyone else notice the voice over from Jon saying that sometimes they will be together on the couch and sometimes they won't because they have "such busy schedules" and it "depends on how things are going"? Nice attempt at a post production save, TLC.
Also, how dumb do they think we are? Mady and Cara planned the surprise? REALLY? I think I'll have my 10 year old call CCCakes tomorrow and see what kind of response she gets. While she's at it, she can call our personal chauffer too.
We are a very small, very busy shop. Every cake we make is handcrafted to order, and while that makes for some really spectacular cakes, it doesn't leave us with a lot of time for visitors and jibba jabba. So we can't have people stopping in to watch. We do realize that you are special, but we simply do not have the time or resources for visitors.
Also, our evil lawyers have told us it's a no-no to have folks traipsing through here. Would you want a parade of visitors walking through a place you were ordering food from? Didn't think so.
If you ask to visit, we will be forced to say "no". If you show up anyway, we will not be able to let you come inside. We don't want to let you down and we don't want to feel like mega jerk meanie heads. We are very sorry to be so stern and such, but there are no exceptions to this policy.
We do not give tours of our facility to groups.
To reiterate (it bears repeating), if you show up to our bakery and ask to come inside we will say no.
Please be aware that there are gels on all of the windows on our bakery. The Ace of Cakes crew needs them there to keep the glare down inside while filming. Because of the gels, you really can't see inside the bakery from the outside. We're telling you this now so that you're not disappointed if you come here.
We do not sell our merchandise at the bakery. Merchandise is available for purchase online via credit card
This is why we have children growing up and freaking when they don't get a Mercedes for their Sweet Sixteen or they aren' the first with an Iphone or any number of items which substitute for real self worth. Not a 10 or 13 passenger van, but a 15 seater. Not a Chevy but or a BMW or whatever. Not six cribs given with love, but six matching cribs, deluxe no doubt. Not a kitchen with new, top of the line new appliances, but a remodeled kitchen, probably with lots of custom made features.
I had no trouble not watching their show tonight.
I rarely have to bake my own (and when I do I don't complain) because I have a mother and a sister who gladly bake a cake for me every year (as I do for them). Perhaps if Kate hadn't cut everyone out of her life, she would have a loving family member or two who would bake a yummy cake for her.
I've posted this question before, but here goes:
Kate wasn't wearing her solitaire diamond necklace in these two episodes, which were filmed between March and April. She started wearing it recently, noticeable in some of the recent pap pictures, and it appeared in the Season 5 premiere.
I wonder if it is from Jon (as apology for the mess), or did she buy it for herself? Indulge me, I'm just very curious!
I am a first time poster - long time reader of GWOP. I WAS also a devoted, long-time fan of J&K+8; however, I want everyone to know I did not watch tonight's episode either. I watched NatGeo's ocean episode, which was much more satisfiying.
My beliefs are also similar to another poster, in which she said she cannot watch any more due to the moral, ethical wrongness of exploiting children.
I will also not watch AOC any longer; or any other show that marries itself to Kate+8 (I call it pimping oneself out). I only hope Stacy and Clinton of WNTW stay away - I would be so disappointed if they did the episode about the evolution of Kate's style of dress.
Not to sound Katish, but one thing bothers me about AOC - I always wonder if the crew washes their hands prior to rolling around in the fondant. I never see anyone wash their hands and wonder if the fondant, and other labor-intensive pieces could have "stuff" in it.
All of you posters make me laugh and it is refreshing to read your opinions (I always LOL).
Do you remember where this info. came from? I went out to Discovery Communications (Parent Co. for TLC) and I didn't see the Food Network as one of their networks.
I read it on here in one of the many threads but it looks like I was either incorrect in my memory or the info was incorrect. Sorry about that.
It really struck me when Kate said that her kids cakes "looked like a rainbow vomited". I can't describe to you, if my mom had told me that, how much it would have hurt my feelings. And then I thought, "I wonder what Michelle Duggar would say if her kids made her a cake". I bet it would be nothing short of the highest praises. Just goes to show what kind of person Kate really is, no matter how much she attempts to cover it up.
Btw--TLC this is in response to both Jon and Kate episodes tonight: your viewers aren't stupid.
This is the last time I watch "the real American family" Jon and Kate Plus 8.
Okay, just starting to add the new events to the timeline. Kate and Jon are seen 3/24 coming out of Mr. Chow's and then 3/28 (she says her birthday in the episode) just got to watch the first 15 minutes again, she is at Charm City and Jon is in Utah. Maybe he went from CA to Utah and she flew home?
But, this would have been really close to the first tabloid encounter since they went to Mr. Chows to look all okay and patched up. Then he takes off on her birthday so obviously not all okey dokey.
Very interesting how they have Jon doing most of the spinning pre-tabloid in this show. "we agreed to always have one parent here. When she comes in then I leave." Why would he say that??? How normal is that? I used to travel for business 4-8 days a month and my DH didn't travel for work. When I was gone, he took care of our 2 year old when he wasn't working. But, then when I came back, he would have said, YEAH we are all home again now! Not - NOW I go away?!?!?! I know that is reality but why did they think they could get away with that sounding "normal." Did he not care?
I'm going to work on more timing stuff. If anyone knows what clips were done on what day let me know.
I'm curious - anyone go to Bentonville on the impromptu May 9th book signing that was added??? The first scenes they put 3 different signing together to make that montage, but when she is talking she looks like what could be a Wal-mart. Curious if they knew then that they were going to need PR footage of her being nice to fans and that is why she added a signing? Seemed like weird timing but if it was to get PR footage it would make since it was a priority. Gray is in that footage behind her.
Just so you don't think I'm too crazy - baby woke up tonight. She has been sleeping through for months! Hope not a habit.
Jon needs to get a set of balls, stat. He seems so demoralized even though he's trying to act like he's okay. I'm guessing the ski trip was a buyoff attempt by TLC.
Get control of yourself Jon! It's time to man up. If you don't want to stay home and be Mr. Mom that is okay! (I couldn't do it either) Since money shouldn't be an issue at this point, go volunteer somewhere closer to home than Utah and without cameras.
Re: the timeline of events. Jon's Utah trip didn't necessarily happen at the same time as Kate's birthday - even though the episode said it did. The filming could have been anytime.
TidyCat said...
I stooped low enough and watched and...
I got sick. I started to spew when she said "fluffily", but blew chow at "snarfily" and all the weird noises she makes when she's being Oh So Fun Kate. She is like June Cleaver on acid.
She was very grossed out, by the way, that the dogs slid down the slide on their heinies.
If TLC is trying to balance out the fascism of earlier episodes they went wayyy too far on the candy and sugar.
When Jon mentioned the ubertrauma of the broken toilet lid, Mady mimicked her mother's immediate, over-the-top horror. It was truly sad to see that little girl sitting between those two on the Couch of Shame being so ill-used by all, making desperate faces.
Whatever does Mr. Gray see in this basket Kase? Truly beyond me. And I hope some marriage counselor points out to her that it's a good plan to end one relationship before starting another. Just sayin'.
(Sorry, probably mixed episodes, but it's all becoming a blur, a spiky tanned blur, but a blur and a bore nonetheless)
In defense of Ace of Cakes and Duff I have this to say...
The Ace of Cakes and Duff's appearance on J&K+8 did not appear to be a crossover show.
Kate explained that Cara and Mady were fans of the show and then she by proxy became a fan of the show.
If anything the people at Ace of Cakes were most likely taking the opportunity to get a little more publicity and perhaps do something nice for the Gosselins.
I don't believe Ace of Cakes has contributed to what has become the larger issue of child exploitation. If anything they were used the same way other business owners have been on the show.
I thought last nights episodes were so BORING...I literally had to keep my eyes open to watch. Did we just see the whole cake decorating when the kids turned 4? It seems to me they are running out of ideas and just repeating them over and over.
I've watched this show from the beginning and saw the changes in these upstanding Christian parents early on however I couldn't seem to stop watching it until last night.
As I watched this woman, who does absolutely nothing with her life, be pampered eating her salad in her robe, dabbing her mouth with a napkin so not to mess up her nails, that was when I changed the channel and I will never watch again.
She has contributed nothing to society to be in the position she is in. The Gosselins have attained their wealth through greed, manipulation and fertility drugs. That's it.
Everything they said in the beginning went out the window once the dollars started rolling in and tummy tucks and hair plants were their priority.
Then I realized... why am I helping to up their ratings and continue keeping them in this position? If their show isn't popular than there is no show anymore and the Gosselins will have to live in the real world with the rest of us who actually work and raise our kids.
I can't think of a more fitting lifestyle for two people that planned to and eventually did scam people in order to achieve wealth than to lose it all and the viewers have the power to make that happen.
Seems to me like it is a pis#$%^ contest between J&K. Who is the better parent, the better "giving back" person, etc. Alot of that chatter going on. Jon is the winner in my eyes. Although wrong for what he did, I think he sees the error of his ways and it trying to fix things. I do feel that the greatest ending to this story would be for him to get the best attorney, fight for the kids and shut Kate down.
Kate and Mady....Kate is as phony as a $3 dollar bill. Now all of a sudden she is mom of the year?! Give me a break...she is so transparent.
My hubby and I agree that Duff agreed to do this for the kids...not Kate. Charm City cakes may or may not be as close as Carlos Bake Shop in Hoboken, NJ. I live in in NJ and know where it is. Not sure why TLC chose CCC over CBS.....interesting. Maybe because Buddie ain't having any of the SH*& she dishes out!
sueshe said...
With respect to Jon being absent from Kate's birthday, if he was told months prior that the marriage was over, why would he help celebrate with someone who no longer wants him around?
I bet with the pain he is going through, talking about his father gives him some comfort. He wants to continue in his father's footsteps and help with handicapped children. I also heard the comment about the "operating" on disabled children. I know he was a dentist, maybe he was an oral surgeon.
Did anyone pick up on the security equipment (tv's) in the kitchen?
I just can't get over Kate's demeanor. Obviously she has been told that she needs to watch her flare ups, and to act more affectionate towards the kids. Also, we will see her being much nicer to the public, especially at book signings. But, I am sure it is killing her to do this, and when the cameras are off, she reverts back to her old self. An arrogant b----!
I feel for Jon because if we can see the changes in her, imagine what he is going through. When they sat down at the kids birthday party for the family picture, she basically ordered him to remove his sun glasses. It would've be been nice if she could just have asked him. But not Kate....
The show now is just about freebies.....freebie cakes.....freebie trips......freebie kitchen renovation......freebie bus (when ever needed), freebie spas, freebie motorcycles, freebie, freebie, FREEBIES...
The sad part about this whole thing is, that the family has broken up, and TLC continues to film it. Jon wants it to stop, Kate wants it to go on. Kate could care less about working on saving the marriage. I guess her fame is worth much more, than a family staying together.
Because TLC feels they have a gold mine with Kate, they will do anything and everything for this woman. And the more she gets, the more her attitude spins out of control. I really feel for these kids. The perception of life is very distorted, and this will affect them for the rest of their lives...
If Jon was really at the disability center, why haven't we seen any footage? You know TLC would have shown that as damage control. You know, look how Jon Gosselin is giving back!
There is a tradition now that every Christmas, my niece and I decorate cookies. It started when she was 3 and we still have pictures of those creations. Last year, she was so proud of one of hers, she ran around the house showing everyone. We all smiled with her and told her how gorgeous that cookie was. Ya know, it was extremely cute.
Kate is missing out on a real mother's experience.
As far as You Tube goes, yes, TLC will get hits, but you also can leave comments, where the latest articles about them are etc... And these days, the negative, 'stop exploiting your kids' or 'please end the show and work on your marriage' comments outweight the positive.
Someone who has a Jon and Kate Channel has even put together 6 <10 minute vids of the bad moments from Season 4 alone!! Which has 99% anti-Kate, stop exploiting the kids in responses.
Hits on YouTube isn't the same as watching TV. It means we're bypassing the sponsors AND giving instant feedback and reactions. They'd be well served reading their channel.
And also noting that most of the big KON fans have potty mouths.
Once you have kids your birthday is no longer about you. It's about your kids enjoying the day. My son would always do his best to plan a fun day. Mom, let's go to McDonalds for lunch! Let's play minature golf! these are some of the best birthdays I've had. He also had access to anything in the kitchen so he could make pancakes or a grilled cheese sandwich for me (not organic, either!)with me hovering around in case he needed help--and so I could clean up when he was done. For Jon not to be there was inexcusable. Whatever issues they have, the day is not about Kate, it's about a family celebration and like it or not, he is part of the family. anyone can put aside their issues for a day for their family!
actually, Food Network, HGTV and Fine Living network are owned by Scripps Network Group. TLC, Discovery, Animal Planet, Travel, and ID are all owned by Discovery Network Group. (I used to work in cable advertising and I've worked with reps from all of these networks, and had to get to know their programming pretty well in order to sell the ad space).
if this is Ace of Cakes, that is really strange that they would let them cross-promote with a Scripps Network show. networks NEVER do this with shows outside of their network group. for example, Nickelodeon, which is an MTV Network (with Comedy Central, MTV, VH1, etc), has very strict rules about advertising their shows on Cartoon Network, which falls under the Turner Networks umbrella (with CNN, TNT, TBS. etc).
***********************************
I would normally agree (I am in advertising as well) but these two networks might have a "deal." Because I noticed, when I was watching Food Network during Memorial Day weekend, there was a J+K8 season promo overload (back to back commercials).
Also, Chef Duff AND the man from Cake Boss have both done cake challenges on Food Network years ago (that's how Duff got his own show).
That's why I think these two networks have some sort of money deal going on to cross promote.
Kate whines more than any other mom I know. And about the stupidest things. Don't want to bake your own birthday cake? Then buy one from a bakery. Like you did for your kids' birthday; you can't make me believe you baked those yourself.
Also, Jon makes me want to puke. How was he "helping" when they had a professional there helping the person with CP down the slope? Jon, try being a personal caregiver to an individual with CP, as I have done, then you can act like an expert. You just wanted to go skiing on Kate's birthday, and I can't say I blame you.
There is NO way that Jon Gosselin went to Utah with the primary goal of helping the disabled ski.
Jon Gosselin went out there to get away from the shrew and to snowboard-period.
The whole disabled bit is nothing more than damage control from TLC.
Oh, yeah, isn't this around the time that his teacher girlfriend was seen in Utah with him?
Not to nitpick, but I'm surprised that Jon and TLC aren't aware that many people do not like/no longer use the term 'handicapped'.
I take that back - Jon is clueless - I'm surprised TLC wouldn't edit that out or have him say his lines again using the term 'disabled' or 'differently abled'.
Hey all,
To respond to an earlier post and to let everyone know, Baltimore is DEFINITELY closer and an easier drive from the KONpound than Hoboken. I travel to Northern NJ on occasion from "the next town over" from the KONpound, and getting to Baltimore is MUCH easier from here.
I watched the first 15 minutes or so, shouted a few obscenities at the screen, then went out for a walk. Much better use of my time, although playing "Where's Steve" COULD be a fun diversion - imagine, one could turn J&K+8 into a college drinking game, take a drink whenever Stevie Boy is on camera!
lindahoyt said...
Wow, have any of you thought of the absolute AMAZING coincidence it was that there Kate was, BAKING her own cake---when she has said that, "Jodi is really the baker--I cook, Jodi is the baker"....anyway there she was all pitiful BAKING HER OWN BIRTHDAY CAKE--FOR THE CHILDREN!! Awwwwww. It is soooooo sad. She is abused, neglected. People are mean to her for no cause. Everyone picks on her.
But, there she is...COMPLETELY by an act of fate, baking alone her own birthday cake---when a bus drives up! A bus drives up to take her to a bakery in MARYLAND! Wow! What timing!
Turns out that the KIDS...yes the little kids; MADE ARRANGEMENTS for that bus! They aren't babies. No, they are wonder children! They were able to make arrangements for the bus, and call up Duff THEMSELVES! and arrange a whole episode for their mom's birthday! THE KIDS DID IT! THE KIDS SURPRIZED THEIR MOM! JUST IN THE NICK OF TIME! /sarc
Those kids can't even pick out their own shoes! They are not allowed to sit in a normal chair or eat without a bib; and this show wants us to believe that they arranged to surprize their mom with a trip to Baltimore so that another show could advertise on their tv show?!! Come on!
Why would a Gosselin kid think it would be fun to go to a bakery for one's birthday? They never had fun in any bakery before! After last year's cupcake debacle, why in the name of all that's holy, would they want to "surprize" their mom with a trip to a bakery?! GET REAL! SHE HATED THE BAKERY!What a fraud. This is NOT a "reality" show, This proves that these kids are WORKING. They are actors in a scripted show! It isn't real at all.
What a Sham said...
1. Kate says AGAIN (she said it in last weeks' ep also) that everything she does, she does for her kids and she also said the 30 day bed rest thing again. GET OVER IT!
2. I also noticed that both John and Kate have very somber moods during these eps, which were filmed in Mar. before all of the sh!t hit the fan. And I also noticed that even their couch interviews are very 'neutral' -- minimal interruptions by Kate and John actually gets to talk.
3. And seriously Kate, you didn't know where you were headed until you physically walked up to the Charm City Cake building and saw the store sign?! She must have thought that Mr. Steve was taking her on a tour of his old stomping grounds when she saw those exit signs for Baltimore!
I didn't watch. That was the first episode I've missed since they first burst on the scene a few years back.
Thanks to everyone here on GwoP for letting me see the light. I hope more of us on this board can resist the temptation next Monday.
We need their ratings to go DOWN! You can get the entire gist and even video clips if you need them online the next day.
Please, if you really do care about the kids, stop watching the train wreck. It's the single most powerful move you can make. Even if you record it on Tivo/DVR, big brother is watching. They capture that data.
Like some fellow posters mentioned, I chose to spend time with my one child, we took a wagon ride to the beach, played on the swings and sliding board, searched for seashells. Then came home and took a bath, cuddled up with a book on the porch and had a fantastic KON-free night.
lindahoyt said...
This episode, should be enough to prove to the state of PA, that these kids are actors, working out scenerios scripted by show producers. They are asked to "pretend" that things are real. To "act" in a certain way.
So, these little performers, who are working....NOT playing; should be covered by the labor laws.
swissmiss said...
It didn't look like Jon did much 'helping' with the CP kid. But maybe featuring the charity will bring them a few more volunteers. Jon obviously went on the trip to basically have fun and get away from the kids. How stupid does TLC think we are - and oh, it just 'happened' to be during her birthday. Yeh, what a coincidence.
I have logged on to the Charm City Cakes in Baltimore web site that is known as Ace of Cakes on the food network and expressed my disappointment that they sure don't watch the show very carefully. One more business caving in to Kate's demands for more, more, more.
I bet all the kids' cakes went right in the trash as soon as they got home. Why does Kate have to say those awful things and make those terrible noises about projects here kids make? I don't understand it. They are her children - isn't she proud of them? Apparently not. They are merely a meal ticket.
And her syrupy-sweet attitude is just terrible. It could give me diabetes!
I flipped through the channels last night. I don't watch the show because 1) Kate makes my skin crawl - and I'm PROUD to say she has since day ONE - even when my mom would call and beg me to watch as both of my daughters are Asian and she thought the kids were adorable (they are). And 2) I simply find the show boring and laughable in its authenticity.
However, when I see those kids, all I want to do is cuddle them. If I had 8 kids (or 18 or 88) running around my house, I would be basking in the love that I was fortunate enough to have surrounding me. I would be thanking my lucky stars to be a mom to them. I have two girls. They are my heart, my soul, my strength and my world. When I come home from work in a bad mood, one look at their faces snaps me into immediate happiness. Do they sometimes get on my nerves? Of course - and I jokingly tell them they are wearing me out. They giggle, give me a kiss and let me have some space bacause first and foremost, they have no doubt they are cherished and loved.
I just can't imagine having those beautiful, wonderful, funny, intelligent little souls around me like Kate does and not feeling like she is the luckiest woman on Earth.
Didn't watch. Instead I was watching real news. Sounds like both episodes were in the toilet. Anyone seen any ratings yet? Hopefully people tuned out.
How can that hag that runs TLC claim that these kids are just being filmed doing their normal routines? Can anyone really be buying that? IT'S ALL SCRIPTED AND WE KNOW IT. It's one thing when the kids were babies and toddlers and TLC was filming in the old houses because they couldn't be told what to say, but it is quite another thing with these planned trips, the kids definitely have dialogue or at the very least are prompted by the crew, and Jon and Kate's lousy acting with their dialogue.
Is anyone going to confirm if Jon was really doing charity work in Utah? C'mon US Weekly. Out Jon. And while you are at it, find out how much that trip to the bakery really cost. And am I correct about this, that the kids planned the surprise trip for Kate? Did Aaden pick up the phone and reserve the bus? C'mon!
