Kate Denies Water to Mady

Listen very carefully to everything Mady says here so you won't miss what is really going on:

GOOD! Glad this is front page! The other edited version that a poster put on You Tube spread like wild fire so this one will certainly do the same.

Over and over Mady cries for water, "I'll get dehydrated" "I have not had anything all day" Kate says "uh huh me too" and takes care of herself.

Rebecca F. said...

Wow. I just watched Jon and Kates "ugly moments" on youtube and I cannot believe that they lasted this long. Jon's a saint in my book.

You have got to be effing kidding me. I would DIE of thirst before I sipped water in front of my children. She is a beast. And why the hell do they need olive garden cups? 5 year olds should be able to drink out of a water bottle for crying out loud. Mady is becoming more and more damaged by the day, poor thing.

LSJ said...

Wow, I missed a few comments that Mady made. Did she call Kate ugly in the beginning? And then say she drank the water right in front of her face? Is Kate that idiotic that she thinks having her daughter take a sip of water while the cameras are rolling will somehow make her look bad? So oblivious!!!

Does Kate really try and convince us that the kids aren't working, it's just their everyday lives? Get those kids back in school Kate, this was a heartbreaking reality check for how much she is working these kids to the point of dehydration and exhaustion. wow.

Jenna L. said...

My mouth was hanging open. It's like her kids weren't even there. I'm not even going to finish this comment because I'm going to end up cursing badly.

They have to drink of Olive Garden KID'S cups with the straws and lids or nothing?!?!? Geesh.

NICE MOM.

Un-fing-believeable. that poor child. WTH is wrong with that woman? i hope jon uses this in court when HE gets custody.

Huh said...

Wow, that is just unbelievable. It's not like Mady was even making a big scene, the poor kid was just thristy. Kate always thinks of Kate first. That's just so mean, I'm really in shock that a mother would do that.

Why do the kids even have to be there? You'd think there's enough footage of them that they could just show clips of them while Kate is talking.

Yikes.

All the "media coaching" in the world will not work, IMO. Too many have seen too much, and I'm sure there's more to come.

I wonder if this video will make the rounds and what the PR (Public Relations, thank you) response will be.

Kudos to the posters who first started the buzz on this.

I think Kate is overwhelmed and overstimulated. Even though Mady is right next to her and, obviously, should have had the first drink, she is oblivious to her needs...

O.K. I have watched this video 3 times and IMO yes she denied water to Mady but I don't think it was mean. It was pure Kate. The next feed was coming in shortly and yes,Mady wanted water and yes, Kate asked for bottled water herself. Kate needed to so call "wet her whistle" before speaking. But she then asked if the kids could have water between the next segment. Yes, Kate took a sip of water but right at the end after Mady's comments Kate was going for the bottled water again and IMO she was going to give Mady a sip but time ran out. With all this mad, frenzied stories this to me is just much ado about nothing. Please let us not go off the deep end here and be just like those dreaded tabloids.

She definitely denied her daughter water who was profusely begging for it. It looks like a couple things were going on here.

1. Mady was constantly complaining, maybe she was doing it the whole time, which I don't blame her because they were probably there for hours. She told her mother what she needed several times and it got ignored. I will ignore my kids' constant requests in annoying whiney voices and will tell them that if they ask nicely they may get what they want. HOWEVER, I'd never deny a real need such as a drink of water.

2. Kate is so on autopilot and all about HER needs, she asks for a bottle of water and drinks it while completely ignoring Mady's needs for water. It looked like it didn't even register in her mind. She didn't stare at Mady while drinking it but definitely did it in front of her. It could have been intentional but to me, she looked really intense and ready to blow up at someone. She did say at the end to someone that they were bringing drinks soon and then she says, "oh, it's time to go on now". Uhm so what? There is nothing wrong with drinking water during an interview. Scheesh.

Persuaded said...

Thanks so much for posting this... the thing is, even this sample does appear to have been edited, and the comment that others have reported hearing Kate say to Mady, "Is this what you want?" is not in this version. Even so just an amazing piece of footage... the self absorption of the woman is just incomprehensible. Even if you allow that Mady was *possibly* stepping up for dramatic effect, she is obviously becoming almost frantic with thirst. In another thread someone said that they tried to imagine themselves reacting to their own child in this way and had an almost physical reaction... I feel the same way. It almost makes me sob to even think of it.

So... does anyone think that this video will prompt some kind of reaction from the powers that be? or is this just dame old same old?

Jon minus Kate/Why r they still 2gether? said...

Wow- The interview is more important than giving her daughter a drink- Kate has her priorities
all screwed up- kids first - television appearances second.
I see therapy in the future.

Wow, that really doesn't leave much wiggle room for Kate now does it?? She clearly hogged the bottle. She could have very easily given Mady a quick sip or two. That was pretty darn cold and heartless. I hope the right people see this. There is no doubt these kids are being way over worked and exploited. Doesn't seem like much fun to me.

Thank you for putting this video here! I had heard about it but not seen/heard it for myself.

I've watched it three times now, and here's my take on it:

1) Kate HAD to show power and control over Mady to show her who is BOSS.

2)Kate HAD to take a sip RIGHT IN FRONT of thirsty Mady to SHOW Mady that Mom will ALWAYS be FIRST even though she wants us all to believe differently.

3)Kate is cruel. To ask for a water bottle bringing HOPE to poor thirsty Mady and then take a sip from it FIRST when it's your daughter who has ASKED for water...Well CRUEL and HEARTLESS is the only explanation for that!

4)Kate believes that every child of hers needs the same things. This couldn't be further from the truth! How great it would have been for Kate to ACKNOWLEDGE the specific needs of each individual and give Mady some water!

5)Kate is COLD, COLD, COLD! Maybe she had this done to HER when she was small. If so, I feel sorry for EVERYONE involved!

Jana said...

Thank you for the video. I've already said this, but I'll say it again. Kate does not have maternal feelings!

She agrees with Mady that she is thirsty too, and asks for someone to toss her a bottle of water. A bottle is quickly supplied, she takes a sip, and PLACES THE BOTTLE DOWN ON THE FLOOR. Nary a thought for passing it along to her thirsty child right next to her. Nary a thought!

What sort of decent mother would take a drink before her own thirsty child? In her shoes, the first thing I would do is give the bottle to the child whining for water. My own thirst can wait - I'm the adult in the situation!

Kate - you would be a nobody without those kids and all the hard work they do for you, providing you with a McMansion, fancy cars, trips, and other luxuries. At least have the decency to allow them a drink of water when they are thirsty, whether you are "going on right now" or not.

Seriously, this woman should not be in charge of a tomato plant, much less 8 young children. She's a disgrace and embarrassment to real moms everywhere.

samcarter said...

OMG. Just OMG. She starts to reach for the bottle, and then stops herself and tells Mady "there's no time, we'll get drinks afterwards". HOW FRAKKING LONG would it have taken to let your daughter have a FRAKKING drink of water?! Seriously. Would the world have stopped turning if the cameras had started rolling while Mady was drinking some water?

Even if she suspected Mady was being all drama-queen on her (heh, where would she ever learn that type of behavior?), you don't deny your kid a drink of water. It's not like Mady was demanding a frozen Coke or frappucino. Just a drink of water.

iloveuniman said...

This is my first time to post a comment here. I remember seeing this interview (I think it was Kate talking about Octomom, and I think I saw it on Fox.)

Just. Wow. My take?

Kate is more interested in her presence than in the well-being of her daughter. Actually, it would have been endearing if she paused during the interview to give Mady a drink. A real, loving mother would have done that. And it would have been better TV. Kate is stupid.

I also noticed that she asked the crew if they had the Olive Garden cups to give the children a drink after the interview.

She did this on purpose for more product placement, in my opinion. Who brings Olive Garden cups to an interview when you know there is bottled water on hand?

Good grief. I pray for these dear children.

PattyWithNoPity said...

Oh yeah; Quite the passive aggressive little powerplay there by Katie Irene. As she is sipping HER water and afterwards you can just tell she enjoyed that little scene.
What a smug bitch she is; so not a mother at all. That was pathetic to see. Hope this gets seen by a lot of people!

Suburbanessa said...

Heartless and Cruel.

Lee said...

WOW. I don't know what's worse; Kate requesting the water and helping herself, and then saying there is not enough time for Mady to have some, or completely ignoring that Mady is talking to her in the first place.....
When I was pregnant with my first daughter, I witnessed a couple walking downtown while their young child trailed just behind them, repeatedly saying, "Mommy". The couple, during the two blocks that I walked within earshot, never once acknowledged the boy. Ever since, it has been one of my biggest pet peeves when parents rudely ignore their kids and treat them with such contempt. If another adult was interrupting an ongoing conversation, politesse requires that they are acknowledged, even if it is to say, "One moment please". As a now two-time mum, polite civility hasn't failed me yet, especially if the "annoying" child has something important to say, like, "I'm really thirsty".

Kelly said...

What a horrible woman. I've been reading a lot of comments that people have been noticing that the kids aren't given a lot of food to eat (that we're shown on TV, at least) and I have to wonder if this is a tactic that Kate uses to try and control her kids, withholding food and drinks.

In any case, as a mom, I wouldn't care if we were about to go on the air, my kids are thirsty, we need to get them water.

I'll bet if Hannah had asked for water, she'd have gotten it right away. Poor Mady.

I saw this clip elsewhere on the internet, where it appeared to be somewhat edited. This clip is very clear. I don't understand why a mother would ask for a bottle of water after two or more of her children stated that they were very thirsty, and then take a sip herself, instead of giving it to her children, and then maybe asking for a bottle for herself. I know Mady can be whiny and a bit dramatic, but that was very unkind and cold of Kate.

What a bitch. God forbid one day that woman will be bedridden begging for a sip of water and hopefully her dear child won't remember how her mother treated her and withhold water from her. There is no way in HELL I'd do that to my children..if I thought for one minute my kids were thirsty or hungry for whatever reason I'd give whatever I had to them...NEWSFLASH Kate..SO would most parents in the world. I mean, who does this?? They had to be burning up sitting under those hot lights wearing those hot clothes...my blood is boiling now. I'm so over this show. I've not watched it in a while nor do I intend to.

Standup4thechildren said...

I have read many many articles, blog comments and videos regarding the exploitation of these children. This video has left me with feelings of total disgust for everyone involved in the production of this show...namely the parents. They claim the children are being filmed while they go about their everyday activities and therefore they are not working. This clip is clear proof that the children are being forced to work against their will. Sit pretty for the interview and then you will get some water...how neglectful. How can these parents continue to exploit their children in front of millions of people? How can this go on? I believe Kate is the ringleader and Jon was forced by his aggressive wife to follow along with her big plans all this time. But now I have lost my sympathy for Jon...he needs to stand up for his children like a true father and put a stop to this madness NOW.

Wow - if you listen closely, Cara is complaining about not having food or drink "all day".

I posted this on another thread before this one went up, but this is the same marathon interview session in which Kate threatens the kids with physical punishment (spankings) if they don't sit still (several GWoPers posted this when this footage was just starting to be released).

Sounds like something the PA authorities need to see in their investigation fo the kids' working conditions. Access Hollywood - what about *that* footage?

Midwest Teacher said...

UNBELIEVABLE! I understand that you give one kid a drink then everyone is going to want one, but C'MON! That poor thing. They all look so pitiful. What mother would deny that. It was only when Mady told her how "mean" it was for her to drink right in front of her that she decided to give in, but then it was too late. Miss Demando couldn't have demanded that all of her kids be hydrated before taping! Also, she only decided to ask for a bottle of water for herself once Mady started mentioning how thirsty she was. I'd never take care of myself before helping my very obvious miserable daughter. Dispicable and Disgusting!

kmac said...

wow. that's really cruel. i'm 22 years old and my mother has never, ever put herself in front of me like that. if i was complaining about "dehydrating," she certainly would've made sure i had a drink of water before she took one for herself.

i'm actually someone who watches the show on a regular basis, but the more i see of kate the more i realize how poorly treated these children are (by her, specifically). i don't think she's quite mommy dearest, but she's showing herself to be more and more selfish by the day. kate needs to realize you can't measure love with brand name clothing and endless free toys.

squattmunkie said...

Wow. What kind of mother does that? NOW we understand Mady's behavior we seen previous from that clip. NOW we get why she later said "I like daddy better" when asked if Kate was a good mommy.

And I don't understand what the big deal was. Why couldn't Mady drink on camera? Kate is mean, pathetic excuse for a mother.

Karen said...

Wow. I have been a lurker here for a while. I have enjoyed reading everyone's well thought out comments and observations while nodding in agreement privately but this video compelled me to add my two cents.

I cannot fathom how any mother could ever deny her child water while having some for herself. She was far more concerned with the interview than the needs of her kids. We've all gathered so much just from watching the episodes but seeing this "behind-the-scenes" type footage provides valid proof that Kate is truly a monster and her children need some sort of advocacy.

As a woman who struggles with infertility it breaks my heart to see women like her blessed with children. You would think that she would cherish her children giving the fact that at one point in her life she had to face the concept of never being able to have kids (why else would she have turned to infertility treatments?) What a disgustingly selfish human being.

Deb said...

Anywhere I go, I keep a bottle of water for the kids...if they were telling me they were thirsty, I'd have hopped off my butt faster than you can count to 2, and gotten them a drink/potty break.

That was just vicious.... Mady asks for water, Kate mentions getting a bottle (which would make Mady assume she's getting the water for HER) and then guzzles it right in front of her! Then "oops we're going on now".

Horrendous. Wow. I'm speechless!

Michelle said...

Oh my gosh. I am disgusted with her. I cant even believe that.

Julianne said...

What a heartless thing to do!

I don't have any children, but I do plan on having some at some point in my life. I can't imagine doing something like that. I already place the needs of my cat before myself; I can't imagine how I'd be with a child :D

Poor, poor Mady. Maybe Kate thought that if one child got a drink, then they'd all start grabbing at it? I don't know .. not trying to defend her AT ALL, just to try to understand how someone could be so cruel. Then again, I'm sure it wouldn't have been too much trouble to get two bottles of water, just so they could all get a bit.

Rebecca F. said...

BARBMAE, KATE had time to get a sip of water. KATE asked for water and then took a sip in front of Maddy. If Kate had offered the water to Maddy first, there certainly would have been time.

Put the kids first!!

KB said...

Wow! All I can say is wow! Kate's priorities are very clear right there, herself and herself alone. The children are merely props, tools for her to use to advance herself.

I can't believe she did that, and good for Mady for calling her on it! I Kate really cared she would have made sure her children were taken care of, especially with something like needing a drink.

Of course Kate will now say that Mady had been having a bad day and had been whining and complaining for most of it and thta she was just exaggerating about it all. But that clip really says it all she didn't offer any to Mady and she just didn't care. What parent doesn't share a drink with their child?

I wonder why the staff for the filming didn't offer the kids a drink. They are filming all the requests but yet no staff member steps up and gets the kid a drink. Only Kate gets tossed a bottle. It takes a village or at least a film crew.

Mark my words, the next pap pictures we see will be Mady out with chugging down huge bottles of water....

Too late for you Katie Irene, you smug wench.

Elle Rose said...

It was pure Kate, and it was mean. As always, she thought of herself first, then her "career" and as an afterthought, her children. Yes, I know, she reached for the bottle. AFTER she had set it down after drinking it herself. And her "career" still trumped the needs of the kids. This woman is too selfish for words.

Deb said...

Upon watching it again, I found this part of the dialogue that I missed the first time.

Mady: I haven't had anything to eat or drink all day. I'm going to get dehydrated or something.

Kate: Me too.

*pause*

Kate: That's true- can we, is it time to get me a bottle of water....

I missed it the first time, but "that's true" seems like Kate was saying "oh yea, I could get dehydrated!" and thought she better get herself a drink.

Why say "that's true" and proceed to ask for water...as if you're agreeing with Mady that she needs something to drink??

It's obvious she was being concerned about her OWN welfare, not just 'not having time' like some defenders are saying!

Huh said...

This clip shows one very clear thing to me: Kate thinks only of herself. It's a huge warning sign that all the millions that are being made on those children's backs are being spent by Kate and only Kate. I highly doubt that she's even considering dividing up that money equally and giving those children their fair share and putting it into trust for them when they turn 18. That money should be divided up and split 10 ways. Kate is using their money like it's going out of style, and I'm worried Jon may be as well. Someone needs to step in and protect those kid's assets, because I highly doubt they'd be able to wrestle away any of that money from Kate's greedy little hands without a lawsuit.

That said "watergate" here doesn't much shock me...I'm just very very sad at the life these kids have to live.

I think Succubus is quite a fitting description of that thing that calls itself Kate. It is devoid of all human emotion, empathy and actions. It does display other worldly behaviors.

1. It was cruel and heartless to Mady.

2. It also ignored the other childrens plea for water.

3. The entire clip showed 8 beautiful children being forced to do something they were obviously not wanting to do.

4. Who benefited from that interview? It certainly was not those eight beautiful children.

I have emailed this clip to "It's a Minor Concern" and Jodi's sisters blog in hopes that they will know who to pass this clip on to.

I hope that the blog owner will understand why I refer to Kate as it.

I'm still going to watch it again because so many are still upset about this maybe I missed something. Just wanted to let barb know she wasn't alone.

I don't think Kate was being a good mom in this scene but I think she was just not focused on the kids. I also have anxiety issues and get really overstimilated and sometimes cannot focus on the important things.

I think Kate was being Kate.

It still shows that these kids are working. That cannot be denied! And Kate shouldn't have put herself in this position because breaks should have been planned for the kids like they would have been if there were any laws to protect them.

What makes this extra special and Kate-eriffic is when she leans downs to get the bottle of water for Mady, who is about to burst into tears, and then puts it down when someone says in her ears it's time to go on. Super parenting in action there. But, hey, momma Kate has had her water and the plebes can wait.

I also notice that once Mady mentions water, most of the kids say they are thirsty too. Hannah and Leah actually appear to do a dance in happiness.

Poor Cara and Mady, bookends of misery on that couch.

Why couldn't the kids have had something to drink while Miss Thang was interviewing?? It would have kept them quieter.

By the way- did I hear her say that "after this one" the kids might get something to drink, implying that this was one in a string of many interviews??

How is this not considered a day of work? How many average American families spend an entire day in a studio being interviewed?? I thought the kids were just filmed going about their regular childhood activities!

Argh and Ack.....

But, additionally, Maddy stated that they have basically been doing these TV things all day. How do you keep little kids quiet and sitting like that for any length of time?? And, more importantly, why should they have to??????????
I feel so sad for these kids. And, so angry with TLC for letting this continue. My only fear is that if TLC finally cancels the show will some other network just pick it up due to the ratings??
When does this madness end??

It's like this:
When I wake up in the morning, I'm hungry, and my sons are hungry too. I always, always feed them breakfast before I get anything for myself. That's what normal human beings do--they take care of the needs of others (especially their children) first.

Who cares if they were about to go on air? IMO, it would have been more endearing of Kate to let Mady drink on air. She could have easily explained to the audience that the poor girl was thirsty and her kids needs come first. I actually would have been impressed by Kate (perish the thought!) had she handled it this way.

BarbMae, if Kate needed to "wet her whistle", SHE should have been the one to wait until the interview was over to drink.

Kate is a pathetic excuse for a mother and a reprehensible human being.

Some might say that Kate probably didn't honor Mady's request because that might start a uproar with the other children requesting water. If that is true there it was TOTALLY off base and cruel to open the bottle of water and take a swig of it right in front of the child!!!!!

Denies cupcakes on a birthday.
Denies water when her child is thirsty.

I have to wonder what else these children have been denied.

Can I please throw water on KATE'S FACE???

You know when I watched it my initial impression was that Kate was asking for water for Mady.. when she took the drink herself I was utterly floored. I am thinking that the crew probably thought the water was for the kids and that is why they threw it to her so promptly. They were probably as shocked as we were by her behavior.

At least I hope they were.

I'm going to watch it again with a bigger screen because I must have missed something here.

Anyway, I'm starting to feel like a crap mom. I mean I do not like Kate's reason for not stopping what they are doing but ice had a few times where I have made my daughter wait for a drink. Funeral she was thirsty and whineing and I told her to straighten up and we would get it when it was over. Another time that comes to mind is the grocery store. She'll want a coke as we are checking out. Well that small coke is the same price as a whole 2 liter so if we are going home afterwards I will tell her no you have to wait until we get home.

I don't believe mady that she hadn't eaten or drank all day. I just don't buy it. She is known to exaggerate and knows exactly how to make her mom look bad (I love daddy more) I'm sure it is kates fault but mady is like that nonetheless.

Now I wpild never in amillion years tell my daughter no wait until we get home and then pop one open myself. I don't know why it seemed to me like Kate took a sip and then started handing it to mady and then they said time to go so she was hiding it. AM I wrong? I can't watch it right now on blackberry which I'm not important like Kate but got because my dh works at sprint.

When I was a pre-school teachers aide there was one little girl who was standing in line to go in after recess.She said that she was sooo thirsty so I ran inside and got her a cup of water. The teacher scolded me and said that I shouldn't have done that. Maybe she was Kate's cousin.

I believe I remember reading somewhere that Kate always got the kids to take their naps by telling them they could have no snack if they didn't stay in their rooms...that's just beyond inhumane. Punishing or controlling childrens behaviour with food is a major setup for issues later in life. That said "watergate" here doesn't much shock me...I'm just very very sad at the life these kids have to live.
+++++

You are correct; in the "Going Green" episode, the tups told Steve Thomas that "you can't have a snack if you didn't take a nap!"

Kate simply makes me ill. She not only forced the kids to take a "nap" (so she could have her favorite part of the day) when they were clearly no longer needing it, but also punished the kids by withholding food if they didn't! Furthermore, if a child came down early from "naptime" (which I believe was, what, two hours or so? at least?) they had to go up into the room for FORTY FIVE MORE MINUTES. I just find it all to be outrageous. I don't know if all the nap rules still apply or not, since I stopped watching the show a while back, but I wouldn't be surprised if they do. I remember being a little bummed when my sons each outgrew their naptimes, because as a SAHM with a husband who was always gone, it was literally my only time to get things done. But when they outgrew the need during toddlerhood, that was that, and I adjusted. And whether or not they need sleep during the day, THEY STILL NEED FOOD. She is a sick, sick woman, who has an insatiable need for control, domination, and power.

Doris said...

That's really sad when Mady almost cries in the end... you know what's even sadder? The fact that she's their mother! My mom is not perfect either but she always makes sure that we (her kids) have everything that wee need and I know that if we had the same situation, she would give me the water so I could drink first. I'm not saying that Kate's a monster but...that was not a good mother behavior
and btw I know it's not the subject of this thread, but someone mentioned here that they edit old episodes - it's true, I live in Poland and two days ago the aired the famous Bed and Bedrooms episodes and it was different from then the version on youtube

How can this clip be seen by ANYONE, the general public, the powers that be in PA, the execs of TLC and not see what a monster Kate Gosselin is. She should not even have custody of those darling kids. What the hell is wrong with the woman? I can not imagine a circumstance in which my kids' thirst wouldn't come before my own. I can't imagine me having to send the I am the boss message like that to Mady through withholding water as she did.

This woman is nothing! She is an idiot and a sour faced, cold hearted bitch. I want her off the air and if at all possible away from her kids. Let her fly off to the moon and leave those poor kids to Jon. I do believe that given the same circumstances Jon would have given each of those kids their own bottle of water (shocking, I know).

This woman is not a mother. I don't know what she is but mother isn't. Not only she denied child a water (which by the way doesn't stain) but she dared to drink it in front of tired and obviously dehydrated child. I sometimes remind my little one that it is time to have couple of sips because i am afraid of dehydration.
Children are behaving extremely well. Maybe i am nitpicking but is looks soooo unnatural for five year old to sit like adults waiting for the cameras to roll. And i wonder how long they had to wait before eating and drinking.

I must admit having taken drinks before my kids, but it was so I could get a small drink and then let them have the rest of it.

I thought this woman did everything for her children... And that was one of her reasons for living... This probably is only true when she is sitting on a love seat talking to a camera and producer. Or making $$$$ speaking while the children are home with some stranger nanny that will only work for them once. I hope these children will treat their mother with the same kindness when she is old and can't care of herself. Poor Mady she is probably getting the heck out of there as soon as she can.. more power to her!

Maegan said...

Hrm...where to start? First, I think that even when waiting for the event to start, giving a sip of water wouldn't have been too hard, BUT, with 8 kids...every single one of them would have jumped up for water, whether they were thirsty or not! Does an 8 year old really know when she's dehydrated? I doubt it. But whatever the case, as a mom, I would have waited for my kids to have something before I got something. I have a 5 year old who constantly says, "I haven't eaten all day..." and she might have just eaten 30 minutes ago! And sometimes I ignore behavior that I want to GO AWAY! Once I asked my child to say "please"...instead of saying please she started to scream, "I WANT IT NOW!" Did I give it to her? Nope! Ya know what she did then? She screamed my name for 45 minutes. I totally and completely ignored her. At some point I said to my husband (for my daughter's benefit), "Wow, it sure is loud in here...ya know if [name] would stop screaming & politely get my attention, I bet I would listen to her!!" It took at least another 15 minutes to hear a polite "mom"...but I got it. And I never had to ask my daughter to say please again! Seeing & hearing little snippets on the street, in a restaurant, or heaven forbid in a TV studio...it's easy to say, "I would have done it this way!" But I know that if someone came in on some of the things going on in MY house...they might think I was truly the meanest mom in the world unless they got an explanation. I do not think Kate's behavior was appropriate, but it seldom is...I can also look at Mady & see behavior my own child has exhibited...so I am not quick to assume she is in the right, either.

Here's a my transcript of the video (I had time, figured what the heck).

This is what I heard. Hopefully you can all add or subtract from it as needed:

Maddy: I just want a drink.

Maddy. I need(?) a drink all day.

Maddy: I want a drink. I'm going to get, like, dehydrated.

Kate: Alexis, That's adorable.

Maddy: Mom, I going to get dehydrated or something. I haven't had a drink all day.

Kate: Yes, me too.

Maddy: (groans)

Kate: That's true.

Kate: Could I …could I have a bottle… Is it, is there time to throw a bottle of water at me? (said to someone outside of camera range).

Kate: Thanks. Great. Thank you.

Maddy: Oh you're so ugly(?)

Okay. All right. Okay, got it.

(kate takes a drink of the water)

Kate: Um, after this…

Maddy: You're drinking right in front of me. That isn't fair.

Kate: after this one Judy,….Judy we'll somehow manage to get drinks in here for you.

Maddy: I need a drink NOW.

Kate: You brought the olive garden cups?

Kate: Okay, sit down please. Sit down. We're interviewing. Be quiet. We're interviewing.

Maddy: I need it now. Is it now? You're really really mean.

Kate: Be quiet.

Maddy: You drank right in front of my face.

Kate: here (reaches down to get the bottle of water, but doesn't).

Unidentified voice: You ready?

Kate: we can't right now, we're going on.

----------------

Are you KIDDING me??? The President (republican or democrat)of the United States would take a sip of water before and during a national address should the need arise! As a parent you meet the needs of your children first. Yes Mady was whining and yes it was really annoying. I would have wanted to choke her. I would have also handed her the water before I drank myself. I am certain Kate was attemptimng to avoid the mayhem of all 8 of them getting up and wanting a drink...however she could have easily slipped Mady a bit of water and the proceeded to get water for all 8 at the break. What would have been so earth shatteringly wrong with going live with a kid drinking from a bottle of water. I am stymied.

Someone said something about Kate being on autopilot directed at soley meeting her needs...truer words were never typed. This whole thing is pathetic!

As a now two-time mum, polite civility hasn't failed me yet, especially if the "annoying" child has something important to say, like, "I'm really thirsty".

Lee, I applaud you. Children are still people, just in little bodies; they deserve respect at all ages. Give them respect; you'll get it back. The Golden Rule never fails...treat everything and everybody how YOU would want to be treated.

Kate would have a diva meltdown if somebody treated her the way she did Mady on the water issue. Remember the story of being on "bed rest" and storming into her husband's workplace, screaming over the fact that her father-in-law hadn't brought her lunch? God forbid she might be HUNGRY, sort of like Mady was THIRSTY.

The thing that really screams at me is she was a NURSE, for Pete's sake, so it's not like she doesn't know about the importance of hydration. The fact that she DOES know makes her thoughtless, willful and sadistic behavior all the more abhorrent.

Someone coming to her defense will say that precisely because she WAS trained as a nurse, she would OF COURSE know about how quickly dehydration can be a larger problem, so she must have ignored the child's plea knowing she couldn't possibly be thirsty, having kept track of when Mady last drank. Right. Try to justify it all you want but, in my very humble opinion, the blatantly-uncaring attitude of this mother is simply unwarranted, inexcusable and downright malevolent. She doesn't show compassion; she's hateful. Could she be a more unnatural mother? Kids can drive you nuts but isn't your normal, maternal instinct to give and shelter, nourish and protect?

Mom2Three said...

Did anyone else notice that this interview is also the one where Kate gives Alexis's shoulder the "Vulcan death grip"?

kathy said...

This footage is disturbing on many levels but to simplify, it's a power play. It shows clearly how Kate emotionally manipulates her children to get what she wants out of them.

Mady asks for water. Cara asks for food (in a defeated way) and the tups join Mady in asking for water. I believe Mady was really thirsty and she talks of dehydration. Kate attempts to ignore her but when Mady says "dehydration" Kate realizes how it looks and she makes her power play. She asks for water and takes a long sip, enjoying Mady's discomfort. She puts the water away. I found it amazing how Mady KNEW IMMEDIATELY when Kate got her water bottle that she wasn't getting any! She whines that Kate is being "ugly" as Kate takes her sip. This tells me that Mady is no stranger to these power plays! She reacted like someone who knew that saying anything negative to her mother meant she was going to get punished in some form, even a simple request for water, and when the water came she knew it was for Kate not her. How sad and tragic and anti the mothering instinct Kate is!

When Kate put the water away she had a smug look on her face like "message sent". She gives Mady a pointed look and then, as a pretense for those who are in the room talks about how eventually there will be water for the kids after the segment and talks about olive garden cups. She compliments Alexis who is doing some clowning around (but Kate imo addresses Alexis in order to pointedly ignore Mady.) To those who say the kids are being natural in front of the camera, take note of Alexis's reaction to Kate's sarcastic compliment. She light up and starts hamming it up more for the camera. Can you really tell me these kids are unaware of the camera and that they are rewarded for "performing"? I think not. Without the sugary TLC music, Alexis acting more animated in her performance just looks like a sad and desperate bid for attention from a child who's starved for real connection with her parents.

Back to Mady. Kate's attempts at intimidation and asserting power don't work fully and Mady outright says "You're mean you drank that right in front of my face". This angers Kate but she is conscious of how it looks so she makes a fake grab for her bottle (not trying very hard I might add) saying "here" but then she doesn't follow through with giving Mady a sip and pretends they have to be ready to go on that second. She never intended to give Mady any water. Everything she said and did was meant to dominate and control her and the kids while still trying to give an appearance to the people in the studio that she is a caring mother. She's not a great actress but she WAS acting. Mady understood the subtext and still made comments she might not have made were they in private, since I believe Mady also knew her mother was to some extent acting for the audience. This was a very telling sad and disturbing display on many levels.

What a b#####! If this doesn't say what kind of mom she is, I don't know what will.
To those of you saying it's not a big deal--shame on you! The production of having those kids sit there for "mommy's interviews" was senseless. They were expected to be "perfect-quiet little pr odjects". Working children--I think so.
If she really was doing this for "her children" she would have demanded water, bathroom breaks, and ample space to move around and stretch. Be dammed the next feed was starting!!!! #### you Katy dearest.
If you think your children forget about these moments when you try to suck up to them with the "fun trips and freebies" you are so mistaken. Their confusion will turn to anger--it's coming Katie Irene.....seriously--you need help!!!
And the rest of you crazy people leading her, paying her and feeding off her 15 mins of fame--you to will be named in the future lawsuits those kids file.
Geez, I can't tell you how angry I am over that video.
Someone step in--those kids have no say no matter what those parents say to People magazine.

After Mady said she was thirsty Kate asked for a bottle of water for HERSELF. Kate had no plans on giving Mady a drink from her bottled water, that's why she screwed the top back on after she took a drink. She was going to make her wait until the next segment break when all the kids could have a drink from their olive garden cups we've seen them drinking from on the show. Probably because they have lids and no one would be "ruined" by a dribble of water on their Gymboree freebies.

So why couldn't Mady have a drink when she was thirsty? Obviously it's because she was WORKING.

What really kills me is that some people are saying, "it wasn't that bad". What? Are you kidding me?

The child wasn't whining, she was BEGGING for water, a tool of human survival. And the "mother" (I use that term loosely) drinks it herself. There is no excuse in the world that makes this ok. She should have said, "excuse me. We need to delay this for a couple minutes. My children are thirsty." I mean, she demands everything else, why not demand that her children are cared for before the interview? Or how about having them move off the screen and drink water.

What i don't understand is that she can show them getting bathed, pooping, helping relieve constipation, vomiting, etc, but she can't show them DRINKING WATER(not a frappucino) during an interview? Come on!

What also kills me is that she was talking about OCTOMOM! So your kids can't drink so that they can weigh in on OCTOMOM? Is Mady going to provide some insight on this? Get the eff out of here, lady.

This is off-subject from the disgusting denial of water for Mady, which I'll still comment on after I simmer down, but I've noticed this so many times over past shows or in still photos, don't the twins and the girl tups seem much more animated than the boy tups? The little boys always kind of look a little lost to me. I'm not a mom; somebody explain it to me? In a group of kids like that, do people just gravitate toward pretty little girls and the boys kind of recede into the background? I just picked up on this again in the WaterGate video, which I keep playing to see the different reactions for each individual kid. The boys seem to be such quiet little guys so much of the time. I hope they're good buddies for each other. Joel seems to be with Jon more than the other two.

While Kate's ignoring her kids was the most egregious, since she's the mom, I'm appalled that others in that room would stand by and not say or do anything.

Also, I've watched this a few times, and I think that when Kate is drinking the water Mady is saying, "You're so lucky," indicating she knew that Kate wouldn't be sharing any of that water with her---probably a lesson learned long ago about how Kate's wants/needs always come first.

Perhaps this has already been addressed, but equally disturbing, in my opinion, is Kate's intentional praising of Alexis as Mady is begging for water. If you watch Kate's face, you can clearly see that when Kate tells Alexis she is cute, her intent is to punish Mady. To torture her, really. She never has a nice thing to say to those kids, so why is she suddenly inspired to show affection for Alexis? To hurt Mady. To stick it to her. Simple as that. Of course Alexis is punished too in the process; her little person is reduced to a mere extension of Kate's needs. Heartbreaking.

My point is that it is the same narcy behavior we have seen 1000 times. I've seen much worse from her that I believe was much more intentional then this.

However, I have not seen the clip where she says is this what you want. And on the video I saw I did not see her glare at her.

I was raised by a narc mom too so my view of motherhood is slanted. I would never take drink first but my mother sure would have. She would have done all the things I see you guys writing about and she would have meant them to be cruel. Like make me watch horror movies at 6 years old that had a scene were homosexual men were having sex and then laughing at me when I cried and telling me what a little chicken I was and then making sure my nightlite was off before she sent me to bed alone.

I totally agree with the poster that pointed out that when Kate said, that's true, to Mady's comment about getting dehydrated she was clearly thinking only about herself and totally wrapped up in her own thoughts. Her thought process: "That's true, I might get dehydrate, I need water, can I have water? Is it time for MY water?" Then she drinks the water right in front of her child. That was one cruel power play. Also note that the entire time she is shaking her leg a mile a minute. She's ramped up, high anxiety, wrapped up in her own thoughts. This is *exactly* how my borderline/narcissistic mother behaves. They get trapped in their own heads, act 'nicely' towards outsiders and then subversively emotionally abuses their own kids. Mady is going to snap one day, Cara will implode. The tuplets will have varying reactions. Hannah will have the best memories and won't understand what her siblings are talking about. The children of the personality disordered are so ravaged emotionally and mentally. It's hard to watch.

Kate absolutely lacks maternal qualities. I'm sure that in her mind the fact that she planned to get the kids water on the next break made it totally acceptable for her to take her drink right then and there.

I also strongly believe that her "Control Freak" mind was telling her that if she gave the bottle to Mady, the remaining 7 kids would jump up and swarm Mady for some of the water and "Oh My Lordy-Be" the chaos would just be so out of control and all the viewers would think she had no control over all those kids!

Very well put, Terri.

I totally noticed this. The twins have a few years on the tups; they've been enduring their mom's behavior for too long.

Look, bottom line: Your child is thirsty, you give her water.

A mother's reaction should be to soothe and comfort, not taunt and dismiss.

I once saw a documentary on animal abuse where a dog was rescued who was really just a breathing bag of bones. The monster owner took delight in excessive cruelty to this animal by confining him on a short leash 24/7 while putting a bowl of water and food just so many inches from what the dog could reach to eat or drink, to see how long it would take him to die. I'm sorry to have to share a disturbing image but I do it to illustrate that the dog's owner was arrested and convicted for denying sustenance to his pet for his own twisted reasons.

Am I going over the top? Sorry. But that's the memory I recalled when watching Mady being denied such a basic thing as a simple drink of water. I've watched and watched that video...I don't think she was cranky just to be cranky; I think Mady was definitely thirsty. Kate wanted perfect behavior on the set...she's a dictatorial employer...and her attitude makes me feel that she was retaliating against Mady for vocalizing. Kate wants the kids to be her little obedient puppets, seen and not heard; little pretty appendages to Kate The Talking Head. She has about the most screwed-up priorities of anybody I've ever come across.

My respectful response to this is that, when filming/taping, there are a lot of takes (re-do's). I can guarantee you if Kate was so thirsty that her voice got hoarse, they would have paused tape to give her a drink of water so she could keep talking (I don't think Kate said it was a "live shoot;" I think she said they were "filming") and the reason I know about this is because I used to work in the business.

Wow this was horrifying! I can't believe she did that to those poor children. It's obvious that those kids come last to her. I think I'd be nicer to the people who are giving her such a good life. The pain in Mady's voice made me cringe and I felt so badly for her.

Even though I don't have kids of my own, I babysit quite often for this women and her three kids and everytime I take them with me I make sure we have at least a couple bottles of water for each kid and snacks. This women needs to realize that the need of children come before your own.

I don't understand how she could just ignore them like that.... ugh it makes me sick!

I began my career several years ago in television news. Production lights are VERY HOT! That is why studios are kept so cold because the subjects being filmed sitting under the lights get very hot. And, the longer the lights are on, the hotter they get. Also, in production, in order to get enough footage for a 1 to 2 minute interview, the subject is asked several questions and then the footage is edited down.

I am sure that those kids were sitting still staring at the cameras under the hot lights for a long period of time. Trust me, if a low-income mother did half of the things that Kate has done to her children (in the public eye no less... what goes on without the cameras rolling?) the authorities would have taken the children away. Jon and Kate both have to be blamed for the exploitation as well as TLC.

Please let us not go off the deep end here and be just like those dreaded tabloids.)

BarbMae......baa baa baa......WTF? When she was given the water she could have given all the thirsty ones a quite sip to wet thier whistles as well. Even if time ran out, whatr would people see? A mother tending to her kids.......nothing wrong with that. Yeah she may have been reaching for it for Mady but we will never know and what we did see we do know. I don't think she evebn needed a drink, just did it to show Mady who is boss. Hope the Pa people investigating them takes a look at this!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i haven't read all of the responses yet and i have seen others who think it wasn't that big of a deal, but i'm going to respond to this one -
the first thing you mentioned is exactly WHY everyone is so up in arms about this - it's was MEAN to take a drink befor mady, plus anyone w/ kids knows that once a child is hungry or thirsty or tired they start to whine and it only gets worse from there. i think that kate LOVES that mady has been branded as the bratty trouble child and she EXPLOITS it so that she can play the "poor me" card and people will feel sorry for her for having to deal w/ such a difficult child. Next - the fact that they were about to begin taping a live TV segment has NOTHING to do w/ her kids needs...only her own. I watched these interviews when they aired originally and the kids wer NOT needed. they were there as props and that is all. if she was concerned about the kids sitting still and behaving she could have kept them OFF CAMERA and done the interview alone. she also could have planned ahead and made sure that the kids had eaten and had drinks a little sooner than 30 seconds before the interview began (isn't she supposed to be some sort of queen of organization?). Finally - lots of little girls are drama queens, but most of them don't have their undesirable behavior taped and aired on television soley for their parent's gain...and gee - i wonder where she could have come by that drama queen behavior? i don't really believe that she was anywhere near dehydration but who else have we seen on this show exagerate the little details (30 weeks of bedrest my *ss!) to get their point across?
scientific fact:
that is, your body has already lost water and is telling you to drink.
if thirst is not satiated, then one may start to feel: Increased heart rate, respiration or body temperature; or fatigue, cramps, headaches, and
nausea. if further ignored, it can lead to severe dehydration!
This is the most clear view I have seen of Kate's narcissism.
Mady is thirsty, so Kate is reminded she is too- after all in HER world it is all about HER, so she asks for a drink of water for HERSELF because she only see the world as it relates to herself. The kids can just wait because she cannot empathize with their feelings.
She has no compassion and these kids are CLEARLY working without the proper fluids and rest needed for their age and development. There is no reason the kids could not have had a sip of water and the camera waited a moment.
These children need a social worker or other child advocate assigned to them when they any where near a camera to protect them.
Kate is clearly not interested in their well being.
Not sure if this is the best spot for this comment, but... I'm watching American Chopper. Kate just yelled at Jon to take the dogs and "put them in their crate thingies. That's where dogs belong!" Now, I can believe that there are times when dogs belong in a crate - but the way she says it makes it sound like they belong in crates all the time. Just why did she get those dogs? And why am I surprised that a woman who denies her daughter a sip of water would want to keep her dogs in a crate all the time. She really is a witch.
I don't see how there could be time for the "Is this what you want?" taunt that some people claim to have seen.
There is a cut before she catches the water, to a close shot on her face. Then she unscrews the cap and brings it toward her mouth. Then they cut to the medium shot of her still bringing it to her mouth, drinking, and putting down the bottle.
I am as skeptical of media manipulation as the next guy, but I just don't see where the taunt would fit in the sequence. Besides, if Access Hollywood is playing this up as a big story now, why withhold the most damning line in the clip? If the purpose of the clip is to show the cruelty, why cut the cruelest part?
Watching "watergate" and reading all the thoughtful comments helped me remember flying with my 6 week old baby. The flight attendant came to me and showed me how to use the oxygen mask that might drop down in the event of an emergency and I will never forget her words to me: "Try to ignore your insticts for a moment and DO NOT put the mask on your baby's face first. A minute of oxygen for you first then a minute for your baby. We will help you with your baby."
I was horrified that I might have to put the oxygen on myself ahead of my child. But the flight attendant knew every mother's instinct is to see to the child first no matter what.
**wendyzr said "Over and over Mady cries for water, "I'll get dehydrated" "I have not had anything all day" Kate says "uh huh me too" and takes care of herself."**
My flight attendant never conceived of a Katie "can somebody throw a bottle of water at me?" Gosselin. Kate is "too busy and too exhausted" to offer 1 or 8 sips of water.
FRAGILE: Handle With Care said...
I suppose I'm over-analyzing the water clip now but am I noticing Mady flinch and slightly draw back from Kate toward the end, when Kate sort of points and raises her hand for emphasis? It's not the first time a poster has commented on one of the kids doing that, like maybe Alexis on Walk in the Woods/stick incident (I'm trying to remember which episode).
In fairness, another commenter said it's a sort of automatic recoil for anybody to want to duck and dodge if it looks like something's going to fly in your face or come at you...but that's kinda my point and concern. Mady might have figured she was pushing her luck, so was "anticipating" (what exactly?). This video clip is troubling on many levels.
The kids obviously would rather be anywhere but there; Collin is crying and, as usual, nobody is noticing him. They're on display, those kids; like little circus poodles trained to sit still on stools for a performance in front of an audience. Joel is just zoned. Wouldn't you look at the scene and sense your kids' unhappiness? Filming is an adult pursuit; it's not something a kid would seek out for fun. Wouldn't you put your own selfish desires aside once you saw what it was doing to your children, over and over again?
Kate thinks money is going to make those little ones happy when they're grown...she's stated before, something about the kids thanking her (or being glad) for college educations because of the "family job" they do now. (Hey! When she calls it a family job, doesn't that mean they're WORKING?) But just because money seems to be a driving force in HER life doesn't mean her kids will ever look at it similarly. As a result of this altered, artificial and dysfunctional life in childhood, I wouldn't be surprised if at least a few of them end up the very type that will eschew all material possessions (and fame) for a quiet or solitary adulthood of peace and harmony; tranquility and reflection; authentic, gentle and kind relationships; and thoughtful, mindful existence. They have so many wounds to heal.
Off my soapbox now, but my personal experience is that it's heartbreaking when you're at the mercy of someone else's agenda, left to pick up the pieces of your own broken life. Not everybody has the emotional tools to do it. Old damage is sometimes the hardest to repair.
A couple of thoughts about this clip...
1) Studio lights are crazy hot. I've worked in video production and one of my biggest rules for my "talent" is that I always supply them with water because it's very easy to get parched when you've got a keigel light glaring down on you.
2) This looks like it's being filmed at an affiliate's studio with a live satellite uplink. If it's in a studio, they must have a green room. It wouldn't be that difficult for someone to get all the kids some water or snacks. Since they can so easily throw Kate a bottled water, there is probably a stash of bottles off camera on a table or in a cooler. Pretty standard issue green room or craft services table fare. So, it should be anticipated and readily available for the kids. Basically, not a lot of effort for multiple bottles for all 8 of the kids with little effort to get them together and provide them.
I have a 6 year old who can be "high drama" (gets it from his mamma) and uses "I need a drink of water" as a delay tactic many a time. We've been out and about running errands and he'll ask for something to drink at inopportune times (like right after we've left a store) and I've said "sorry, kiddo, you're going to have to wait until we get home". But, I have NEVER, when I have it at my disposal, not allowed or offered him my drink either before myself or with me going without instead.
For those of you who are saying that you don't see anything wrong with what Kate did, it's not that she said "no" to Mady, it's that she took care of her need for water for herself instead of for her child. That is not normal mothering behavior, in my opinion. And even if every single one of those kids wanted water, so be it. If I were their mother, I'd make it happen. Kate is tv savvy enough to know how to tell the director that if they needed to go to air to do a tight shot on her face while the kids got something to drink and then to pan out to a wide shot when they were through drinking. She's been filming non stop for almost 3 years, she knows the routine by now.
Mady got thrown under the bus and made to look like the problem child and Kate just went along with it.
I think people are misreading Kate's "praise" of Alexis. I think she meant exactly the opposite and was showing disgust in a (failed) attempt at sarcasm. Granted, it was a way of ignoring Mady, but I don't think she liked Alexis's behavior at all.
As soon as Kate said it, Alexis immediately took the whatever-it-was off her head.
Why Kate didn't just say, "stop that Alexis", is beyond me. On the other hand, I guess she gets fed up enough with her behavior later on to death grip her.
The other reason I don't think she really thought Alexis was "adorable" is because Kate rarely, if ever, thinks anything child-like her kids do is adorable or cute or endearing. She rarely enjoys the normal and appropriate childish antics of her children and instead chooses to worry if they are getting dirty, stained, rumpled or whatever. She was probably miffed that Alexis was messing up her hair.
Not to mention this:
Kate's response - "Alexis, you look adorable."
Why not answer your daughter - yes, they are getting you water. Or, even if you are Kate "I know you are thirsty, we will be taking a break in 3 minutes." But to completely ignore Mady to gush fakely (is that a word) over Alexis? Please.
1) body language says, "please someone dont make me sit with there kids any longer." makes me think of someone who is asked to watch someone elses kids. couldnt she have passed the time playing I spy or something. The studio had to give the kids toys. I know to bring trinkets to places to occupy my kids.
2) comment to Alexis was totally sarcastic, could have been followed with 'you stupid little kid' and I wouldnt have been surprised. Very similar to the tone with one of the boys over him not knowing the toy in the pinata wasnt candy. I guess it is great to be better, smarter, than a 4 year old.
3) Alexis seem thrilled that her mother paid any attention to her. sadly despirate.
Then we get to the water. What difference would it make if the kids were drinking water DURING the interview. People do it during precious Oprah so why not on a little spot. Maybe the kids wouldnt have been playing with each other, and maybe Alexis wouldnt have gone home with a bruised shoulder.
just saying
I personally dont think this was all directed at Mady. I honestly believe that Kate realized that she could make someone off screen do something for her. Someone who wasnt Jon would be at her command. Great idea. You are so important because you can gestate 6 kids at one: try parenting a few of them.
My mother once said to me: "If I know you're hungry, I literally can't swallow my own food." Then I moved out of the house to go to university, but every time I talk to her on the phone the first words out of her mouth are: "Are you hungry? Do you have enough to eat?" (She stocks my fridge, of course. Makes sauces and freezes them for me. Would cut up bananas and line them with peanut butter if I'd let her.)
I hope Mom never sees that clip. I think she'll sympathetically dehydrate herself.
Anonymous, I hear what you're saying. I have worked around ranchers who, after a ride, will water and groom their horses before they'll have their own dinner and shower, no matter how trail-weary they are. When you have a responsibility and love for a child, an animal, a parent...anything...your normal and natural leaning is to care for them. This is why, no matter how it's spinned or justified, the water clip behavior of Kate's can't be defended. She took a nice, long sip of water, right in front of the very child who had been asking repeatedly for it.
Not to be overly-dramatic, but don't they withhold water from prisoners of war as a form of torture and capitulation?
Keep breaking down Mady, Kate. Let us count the ways. Just look at her little face on the Starbucks damage-control trip to see that she's unconvinced of your intent.
OMG! I have tears in my eyes, because I'm picturing my own child asking me for a drink in that video. How can a mother be so heartless and then to drink right in front of her little face. She is such a lousy excuse for a human being, those children deserve so much more.
This clip kinda reminds me of the Hawaii esisode when the G family was sitting eating a meal and Kate went on to stuff her mouth and didn't even get up and cut the food up for the kids.
Just when I think it is not possible for me to increase my dislike for this pathetic excuse for a mother, I see this, and my blood BOILS. How dare she do that to her flesh and blood? How dare she? I am so outraged, I can't even type ... I can't even think!
I can't wait till those kids grow up and realize what a mean mother they had. Mean is too good for her.
I seriously think that when Mady gets older, there's gonig to be hell to pay and Kate will get the brunt of it all.
Why do your kids even have to sit there for an interview Kate? The entire thing is ridiculous. They should be allowed to be kids, all the time, period. Making them perform in any way, shape, or form is horrible. You have taken away their right to a normal childhood. And don't say this is normal for them, there is nothing "normal" about it. I hope your show is cancelled today and your face is out of the spotlight forever.
Concerned wife and mommy:
I had the same thought exactly. Access Hollywood knew why Mady was upset at the beginning of that interview, but instead portrayed her (as does TLC) as the brat. It makes you wonder what else has gone on 'behind the scenes' when we see Mady having a meltdown on their show. Access Hollywood should be ashamed of themselves and they owe Mady an apology. These poor kids - they deserve so much better than that pathetic witch as a mother.
Immediately after the original airing of this interview, I emailed a complaint to AH about Billy Bush's comment about Mady.
I also emailed a complaint about the show, can't remember now, where the achorwoman gave a kudos to K8 for squeezing Alexis' shoulder.
I don't know much about this video like when it happened or for what show the interview was for. It's just horrible! How long has this video been out for the public to view? Maybe Kate was punishing Mady for some behavior that happened earlier and that was her so called punishment. Which you should never do-without children's basic needs. I think she does that alot! She is just a sad excuse for a mother!
Collin's actions are heartbreaking. In the beginning he is making some soft-spoken painful moaning noises and moving his arms around in an anxious manner. Then he seems to resign himself to the long interview process and zones out for a bit. I think Collin takes life seriously and is taking everything in and processing it in a way that is visual in this clip. Some of his anguish revolves around the Mady/Kate water nightmare. But, I also believe he is thinking ahead to what will happen to all of them after the interview when Kate is alone with them.
she should have let mady drink from her water, but i could also understand the fact that they were about to start filming (live) and that every single child would have wanted a turn drinking from the water bottle as well (did anyone else hear the kids saying "i want food" "i want a drink, too!" after mady first said she wanted a drink?). i think it's really not as big of a deal as everyone is making it. it's quite obvious from the show that mady is a bit of a drama queen.
.........
...or maybe all of those little darlings were on the verge of dehydration? GOOD for Mady for speaking up...kids are not puppets and should not be treated as such.
So give every kid a sip! Their little, and the dog owners and the Westminster Kennel Club would give their show dogs a drink before putting them through their paces. If she doesn't want to deal with it, there is an amazingly simple solution. DON'T DRAG EIGHT YOUNG KIDS TO A TV INTERVIEW. Enroll them in art camp, or swimming lessons, or let them makes some friends outside the tv bubble.
Do we know how many interviews they did that day and how many hours the kids were expected to sit still?
What a devastating video, this hurts me, just hurts. Poor Mady. I officially HATE Kate Gosselin, what a bitch.
Yes Mady might be a little drama princess. Yes by giving Mady a drink then that would mean that all the others would ask for a drink.....But it was so very very cruel to take a drink of that water right in front of Mady.
There has been many times when I say "Oh I have had enough or I am not all that hungry" so that my kids can have more food if they want.
Kate says "I live for my kids, I breath for my kids" GARBAGE!
I so wish that someone could find and post the original Access Hollywood video denying Mady water when Kate says "Is this what you want?" The close up of Kate taking a sip of water is when they edited her mean spirited words. I really, really, really wish someone could find it and show how terrible was to Mady.
-------------------------------
I saw that episode, myself. But I only saw it the one time and was in such shock I didn't notice how it was edited. I've been thinking about this all day and I'm beginning to think that they took this footage we saw today and may have spliced another couple of seconds into it.
What I mean is that after this interview was over, Kate may have reached around her, held up the bottle and asked Mady "Is this what you want?" They could EASILY have spliced this in with a smirk and then show Kate taking a drink and then continuing on with this footage.
That is how I think it could have been done, I just wish I had seen it more than the one time.
You guys, it's not like they were in the desert and Kate drank the last of the water supply from the canteen. They were in an air-conditioned studio, Mady was sitting on the nice, comfy sofa. For all we know, she just had a drink five minutes ago and just felt like whining. Yes, parents should always put their kids first, but parents should not play to a child's misbehavior and whining, and maybe Kate knew that Mady was just playing it up for the attention.
Emily said...
As for Kate grabbing Alexis' shoulder... yeah, that's what you do when you're not near her and she's pushing her brother around. You get her to stop by grabbing her arm and getting her attention. I see nothing wrong with what Kate did there. Alexis was misbehaving and Kate stopped her. I'm quite sure she didn't hurt her in any way. Kids do tend to be dramatic after being scolded or punished. If Kate had ignored Lexi, everyone would be saying how horrible of her to allow Alexis to hurt her brother and not step in.
