Redesigning Reality

Back in February 2008, Jon and Kate Gosselin were in big trouble.

People were starting to tune in to watch their TV show not for the cute kids and Kate's supposed supermom status, but more for the snark and the rubbernecking that came with Kate's prima donna attitude towards Jon and life. People had started to read, via online archives, old negative news reports about their life before cameras. People online were starting to dissect whether Kate was a good parent or an abusive baby exploiter. Information was surfacing about why Kate's parents weren't around, and too much fan mail was pouring into Jon and Kate's email box that was pro-Aunt Jodi and not Pro-Kate.

The Gosselins were on the edge.

Then Aunt Jodi disappeared from the show, followed by Kate's best friend Beth. The many "-gate" episodes occurred and were meticulously discussed. The National Enquirer did a piece and Paul Petersen (former child actor/child advocate) got involved to say he thinks the Gosselin children are being exploited. Jon and Kate's semi-secret Church "love offering" deception was leaking out, and every new episode it seemed like producer Jen Stocks had it in for Kate.

The walls were about to tumble down and they had to act fast.

So right around the time Aunt Jodi's sister Julie penned her tome online, Jon and Kate Gosselin hired a PR firm/Image consultant and we began to see a "kinder, gentler Kate". But viewers, like the fine writers and readers of GWoP and people who care about these children, can't be fooled that easily.

To understand why we can't be fooled, one must understand how PR People and image consultants might work. Let's take a look, okay?

Years ago, before the internet, 24/7 cable TV, tabloids and the new paparazzi culture, a public figure whose reputation had been damaged was instructed by their PR firm to cry and seem sorry a lot, be seen with your family a lot doing wholesome activities, not get caught with booze in your hand, and be photographed doing charitable acts.

Nowadays it's a little more complicated, especially with difficult cases like Kate, who just keep on adding problems to manage and spin.

As soon as Jon and Kate hired Julie May Carson (no relation to Beth) they probably had a conference with Jon, Kate, Jenn Stocks, and Bill Hayes. Julie then probably informed Jenn and Bill that they were going to have to change the show to soften Kate's image and make her more likable to their target audience, to keep her relevant and marketable.

Perhaps they were told to stop showing Kate slapping and insulting Jon as much as she did (which was replaced by a manic clenched teeth, hard rub of his cheek). Maybe stop using the word ORGANIC as much so she could get NON-organic sponsors and product placement.

Then we noticed Kate appearing in softer colors and new teeth veneers and a change in her previous approach to her children... as if she had been told her to make sure to hug and kiss her sons more on camera; put down Hannah once in awhile and hold someone else, and NEVER, EVER show the Gosselins' employees on camera.

Then came the carefully orchestrated vacation to The Outer Banks!

What better setting to remake an image than at the beach? The beach signifies freedom, fun, carefree lightheartedness. So they stuck Kate in a Jeep with her sky blue skirt and botoxed relaxation, and off they went on a happy adventure. Add the token mess making for the cameras when Kate was told to let her kids have a pudding body painting fest on the patio of their vacation home and let them have Hermit Crabs. Then show them eating crab on the deck in soft candle light all huddled together watching fireworks! THE PICTURE OF HAPPY FAMILY TOGETHERNESS! Add in the newly dyed red hair of Nanny Jenny (which tricked some into thinking they still saw Aunt Jodi) and VOILA! The mental trickery to fool the fans that were teetering on the edge of "Is Kate as bad as the blogs say?" was now over.

The only thing they DIDN'T plan for on that trip was the economy starting to tank right around the time it aired and people finding out how much the properties they were looking at actually cost. But find out they did -- to the tune of a cool $1.3M.

The phase was the removal of the Gosselins' old website with its damning words (and all mention of the Pa State TAP college accounts and any wish lists and greedy comments), and its replacement with a new softer looking and sounding site with lots of "laughter, cuteness and Christianity". Remove all mention of the Gosselin speaking tour from the internet, so the teetering fans can't see just how many days the so-called "stay-at-home parents" are away from the kids and just how greedy the Gosselins are. Then start showing Kate at various hospitals thanking people profusely and giving money to various charities.

All carefully crafted to make the viewers say: "AAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWW! Now I like Kate better, she's so nice! And see? She's giving money to a charity on not ONE, but 4 shows! She's such a good charitable person!"

In addition, Kate lied on the site FAQ that her personal chef was "Craft Services" when it was not. Unlike the Gosselins' personal chef, Craft Services doesn't deliver the entire family's meals in the morning with wine and flowers, even on days when the filming isn't going on; Craft Services is like an ice cream truck

After we saw a total PR media blitz, flooding the internet, women's magazines, and TV with non-stop cutesy fluff pieces on Kate's advice to other moms, on recipes, organization, time management, etc. Add the Kmart and PG&E money saving TV spots. Throw in a few paid bloggers and WOM (Word of Mouth) Buzz Agents to hype the show online on blogs boards and chats and throw out the occasional rumor (like the false rumor that Jon and Kate's Elizabethtown house was vandalized and eggs thrown at it, to prepare some excuses of why they had to move), and Julie May Carson was set.

Another tactic used was buying advertisements for Jon & Kate + 8 in the National Enquirer. BRILLIANT MOVE! It seems the tactic was to have the teetering fan on the fence believe that somehow the ADS were proof that the National Enquirer gave their endorsement of J&K, therefore nullifying the two negative articles -- but that is not the case. It was a business deal much like the ads for Private Sensual Massage Agencies in the back of the New York Times do not negate the truth of the interview of Rudy Giuliani in the front of the newspaper railing against the morals of those very massage parlors.

Try again.

Also brilliant PR move in not publicizing the Multiple Blessings book as much as it could have been. Best to stick with bookstore signings than a huge TV talk show circuit blitz especially when Kate did NOT write the book and the actual author wants nothing more to do with J&K. Best to not have Diane or Meredith ask "Where has Beth been?" where the whole country can hear Kate's response and vocal timbre than just a one-on-one drooling fan asking, huh?

It must have been truly heartbreaking for Julie May, after all her hard work, for Kate to have been voted the WORST SPOKESPERSON EVER.

I have to hand it to Julie May though, it has to be hard to do a reputation make-over for two people who are so very unlikeable and do such greedy, narcissistic things. I mean how do you make hard-working penny-pinching average normal moms in the USA buy Kate's money-saving, house cleaning/organization, and child rearing advice when Kate has outsourced all of that to paid workers, purchased a million dollar estate, and are purchasing a Utah ski chalet? Ten steps back for every three steps forward, Julie May!

As for what Julie May is doing NOW, after Kate was voted the worst spokesperson ever?

It looks as if she is trying to steer the show to where Kate is seen doing some kind of domestic activity, like cooking a meal (soup) that takes up the entire show and involves chasing Jon out of her kitchen, or packing for a trip that takes two episodes or cleaning a refrigerator for an entire episode when we know TLC has paid for a professional executive cleaning. It's all meant to give the illusion that Jon and Kate are still actively involved in domestic day-to-day issues of running a house and feeding and taking care of eight kids to keep trying to build a Kate Gosselin BRAND to suck the uninformed public dry of hard-earned money during a very bad economic recession.

Aside from the children, I almost feel sorry for Figure 8 producer Jennifer Stocks.
It's got to be hard creating a popular show and having it taken over and totally changed.

But I guess when you actively promote and make money off of innocent children Karma bites you in the ass, just like it will no doubt bite Julie May and Jon and Kate. But not only is it going to bite Jon and Kate, it will bite Julie May twice as hard because not only is she taking money from the kids through Jon and Kate, she is actively trying to deceive the fans and American public by creating the illusion that Jon and Kate have changed. That Kate actually still cooks, cleans, organizes and clips coupons and is home all day with her kids, loving them, playing with them and having "traditional" movie nights so Kate still seems relevant and average and relatable to the target group they are trying to market to, to make money off of.

But despite all Julie May's hard work, Kate is still the same person as she was on the day they went to buy cupcakes. We see it seep out of the edges of the airbrushed image makeover occasionally and we hear Mady on Access Hollywood attesting to it, and we hear it in the constant stream of lies J&K both have to make up and can't keep straight, and we see it in the homes they buy and the way Kate still treats her sons and in Kate's jealousy that SHE didn't have octuplets.

It's all still there and we are watching and she cannot fool us. Don't let the lies and illusions fool you either.

Eye of Providence - wow, just...wow. Thank you so much for this detailed, insightful post. Articulate and well-researched. If this is your first post, it certainly should not be your last.

Being KON's PR manager seems like the time I had to clean out the toilets at my highschool for two weeks as punishment - no matter how much you scrub the poop away, you know it's pointless because more will come the next day. Futile and frustrating.

Interesting post, Serena. I think Jon and Kate are caught in a vice of conflicting images. People tune in to gawk at Jon and Kate and see what crazy things they'll do next. As the kids gets older, they lose some of their babyish appeal, so the show needs another hook, and crazy Kate and foolish Jon fill the bill. (Sorry, kids. I still think you're cute.) However, the pendulum must swing back when one of the gruesome twosome goes too far. It's a delicate balance, and I think Jen and Figure 8 know exactly what they're doing. It's a bit like juggling sharp knives.

Next up, KON brand clothing at Kmart, Gosselin Kid adventure DVD's, and perhaps a Keight brand perfume. All in the name of keeping your brand visible and at top of mind.

Let's face it, no matter what KON do, they are here to stay for awhile.

Well said, I feel like this board is going in a new direction over the past few days! There is so much information that is no longer rumor but seems to be factual. As if the longer KON has gone on the more so many wrongs just seem to prove themselves. I think one of the worst things KON did was cancel so many of the church speaking engagements to go on to bigger and better things. More later.

Thanks for your insight. Excellent post! It appears that you have extensive experience in Media Relations, Brand Identity, and Public Relations.

For some odd reason, I too have felt that Jen Stocks has it in for Kate. I think that Jen is waiting for the Gosselin Empire to crumble. I’m sure that it must annoy her that Jon & Kate make much more money then she does. Plus the fact the she works a lot harder then they do.

If I recall, the Gosselins contract should be up soon. My information comes from an article dated March 18, 2008.

Eye of Probidence,

You are totally right about who the show is marketing to. I work in radio, and one of the stations I worked for had a demographic was women 25-40. So we developed a fake person the market to. We called her "Heather" and created an entire life for her. Working mom, two kids, would love to be a stay at home mom, but can't afford it, loves reality Tv... so on and so forth.

I'm sure that JK+8 has about the same demo. A demo of people that can live vicariously through the life of Kate Gosselin, and the overtly glamorous job of a Mom that gets all these perks, and some cute kids, with a husband that is trained to do everything they say...yadda yadda.

I think it's super funny that while the people on the pro-gosselin website say the reason people blog here is because we are jealous of JK+8, it's probably the other way around. If you weren't enamored by the life they live, what exactly would be the entertainment factor? If you didn't wish that was you, and wish that you could somehow have the same things they have and be a "normal" family, then I don't see what the attraction is.

The reason people fell in love with the show is because they saw a normal family. One that struggled, and clipped coupons, and worked, all while juggling the responsibilities of a family. They were normal and relatable. The same people that loved them then, can't stand them now. Why? Because the relatable factor is gone.

I'm pretty sure the only fans left are again, those that are trying to live vicariously through the Gosselins. So maybe in defending J&K, they're really defending themselves, because if they had the chance, they would jump on the gravy train too. Admitting that J&K are not putting their children first, would cause them to feel guilty about their own view. Just a thought I guess.

That's why I hate the Jealous argument. I am not jealous, I'm concerned for 8 kids who have parents that put their well being on the back burner, for a taste of fame and fortune. The term "there is a price to fame" is there for a reason, but so far, the only people that have paid the price are 8 beautiful children, that have parents that put their childhood up for auction.

My parents sucked too, but at least the whole world didn't know every detail of my private life. Even major Hollywood actors get private moments in their own homes. What do the Gosselin kids get? Jack Squat.

Very well done Providence. That was a good insightful read.

I am not jealous either. I am happy with my life. When I snark about things they purchase it is because I feel they are dipping into their children`s future. I could go out and buy a Fendi but then my family will not have electricity or food. I think of them first. We know full well that Kon can afford these things now but at the expense of their children. It is like a big time lottery winner. You either stay grounded and are the same person you always were but with more money. OR You become Kate.

Very insightful post. I also find it odd that I have never seen any full shot of the outside of the new house. The intro still includes the old house, the one that most of the target audience can appreciate and love to own. The new house is so over the top and oozes greed. On a side note, I read somewhere in an interview with Jon that he has 8 kids and 2 dogs. 2 dogs? Will one of something ever be enough for these people? I hope they at least had to common sense to make one of those dogs a herding breed pooch and the other one some sort of bloodhound as it seems Keight is having trouble finding her children these days.

I think QFI would give up the show in a heartbeat. She's practically phoning in her part now, and I think she plans far greater things for herself, and the children are useful in this regard only to establish her bona fides as a spokesperson for, say, P&G.

The children have passed the cute stage and are soon to be in school full time, so what's a mother to do? This mother plans to be a superstar—even though the squirrel who invades my bird feeder shows far greater talent.

True talent can come from many different parts of the body. A dancer, a singer, a gifted tennis player all have talents given by their bodies. I have never, however, heard of anyone whose sole talent was a huge uterus. Never! (And I am an old lady, so you'd think I would have run into one or two along the way to getting old.)

I predict QFI will end up being the Gosselin equivalent of Rhula Lenska who hawked Alberto VO5 shampoo for a while. The interesting thing will be to see which product QFI hawks that turns her into Rhula Lenska.

I think the only solution is for TLC to cancel this show as well as the Duggar's "reality" show. This is crazy. People having large families with the hope, conscious or otherwise, that they will be sponsored with corporate donations and maybe even a tv show of their own is irresponsible. Of course this was in Nadya Suleman's mind when she made her selfish and delusional decision to have so many children.

The Gosselins, Duggars, Suleman and others with the same mindset are not doing what all parents are supposed to do -- put their children's needs first. And children do not need to be exploited on tv or in the press for free diapers, toys, vacations, houses, etc. Kids need quality time with one or more parents. The more kids the less time. The math is simple.

TLC please pull the plug on Jon and Kate Plus 8 before we have more Suleman's crawling out of the woodworks.

Kate's auxiliary gigs come only because people recognize her from the show. When the show ends, she pretty much does too. Kate's inarticulate and uninformed, severely limiting the public work she can do. How many times can she tell and "write" about the miracle birth and day-to-day struggle? Nadya Suleman may get that job anyway. Talk show? Better people than Kate have failed at carrying a talk show. The new Martha Stewart? Pleeze. An hour of how to clean a moldy fridge with a Q-tip? Wait, there is something. Dominatrix. That just might work.

You are exactly right. Nobdy will remember who Kate is after the show, let alone want to here her speak.
Jon, Kate, and the PR team can't clean up this mess no matter how hard they try. Kate has already done the damage that can't be undone. Now Kate has the new supermom for competition, octmom makes sextuplets look like a walk in the park, IMO, J&K's PR team is setting up these 'advice' interviews to keep the focus on Kate rather than the new mom.
When the walls do finally come down and the show is over, Kate won't even have Beth and Jodie to lean on.
Oh, the tangled webs...

Thank you EOP for all the work and research for your article. Thank you too Serena for posting it.

I think Kate began to fall out of favor with Jen Stocks the day Kate threw a dirty diaper at her during a taping. That was rude and unnecessary. Jen questioned her about it on the tape and Kate smiled and said,"Oh did I do that?" She showed a total lack of respect towards Jen. It was an extremely childish thing to do. I'm sure if someone would have done that to Kate, she would have thrown a fit.

This is the PR firm responsible for creating Jon and Kate.

http://www.mediamotionintl.com/

I was referring to them -- specifically Julie.

I might also add to the timeline, Jon's removal of all of his entries at online sites with higher order multiples, specifically Triplet Connection.

It was done to protect his word and image -- all are carefully controlled.

And, also included in this timeline was the cancellation of all events that Kate and Jon had booked themselves thru their website. They stood up the Colorado Mothers of Multiples and a preschool scheduled for the same time. They attempted to stand up the National Organization of Mothers of Twins Clubs as well. Only Jon showed.

There was an interesting article the next day in the Boston paper describing Jon as a "diva" -- he told the newpaper photographer that he couldn't allow his image to be used and that was all controlled by his PR firm.

TY all.

No, I'm not a part of that EyeOfProvidence marketing company.

However, I do have a lot of knowledge into WOM and buzz marketing and how they meticulously make commercials nowadays to touch your emotions and trick you into buying their products.

They set emotional tones in commercials that makes us feel as if we NEED what they are selling. If we don't have this or that widget, we are a bad mom or wife!
Like, without Ron Popiels "Set It And Forget It" oven we are bad cooks, inattentive moms and horrible wives!! What they don't want us to know is a $4.00 fryer chicken propped up on a beer can in our own paid for ovens is just as good and we don't have to pay 5 monthly payments of $19.99!

Sarah (2/06/2009 8:53 PM) is totally correct who they are marketing the Kate Brand to.
Young women who are living vicariously through Kate. In their early 20s just starting out who have yet to realize that none of the things Kate has are important.

Basically the DIAPER GENIE crowd!

PS- You know the CVS commercial with the "It's just another ordinary miracle today" song?
That song and paper cut out animation layout was shopped to other companies before it landed with CVS.
Quaker "Simple Harvest" bars were madeover 3 different times, before settling with the current product.

Always odd when companies ask you "Do the ingredients taste REAL to you?"

In the case of Kate Gosselin, NO, she doesn't seem REAL to me.

Eye of Providence:

Wow! You compiled a very interesting timeline with lots of facts. Everything is right on the money. That took alot of effort, and I think you did a great job! Thanks!

I started watching Jon & Kate Plus 8 simply because I had stumbled across Little People Big World a couple of years ago and found that I really enjoyed it. J&K+8 happened to follow that at some point and I found J&K+8 to be pretty cute, too. I thought the kids were adorable and Jon & Kate were pretty real at that time, still working themselves and actually spending time with the kids and being pretty good parents.

Then one day late last fall, I decided to look on the internet for a little more info on LPBW and happened to come across Jodi's sister, Julie's, website/blogspot. That was about the time of gumgate and I was thinking myself that Kate reacted horribly to that and had treated Jodi like scum on camera which was broadcast for all to see. Well, lo and behold, there was way more info on the treatment of Jodi by Kate than I had ever imagined. At that time, there was even the video clip of Jodi herself explaining many things. From what I had seen myself on J&K+8 plus what I was reading from Julie and had heard from Jodi, there was no doubt that Kate was totally irrational and selfish. And I had to believe that Kate was jealous of the relationship that Jodi had with the Gosselin kids and what the viewers were seeing of Jodi's sacrifice for Kate's kids and the wonderful "mothering" that Jodi gave them. So my opinion of Kate was formed myself before ever discovering GWOP.

And Sarah, I totally agree with you about the jealous argument that Kate's fans like to claim of GWOP. I'm certainly not jealous. I have my family and kids, a great life(!), had my own successful career which I gave up when my kids got to be school age so that I could be with them, spend time with them, mother them, teach them, nurture them, raise them to be contributing young members of society, and support my husband in his career. There's nothing I would be jealous of regarding the Gosselins. I just feel so sorry for those adorable children because their parents are not there for them, they are too busy chasing the almighty dollar.

Jon & Kate only get one chance with these kids, and they seem to be pissing it away (pardon my language, but that's what it is).

RNH said...

Excellent! Post! The worst part is I was one of the ones who NEVER liked Kate or the show really (just Jon and the kids when they still resembled normal people) but totally got suckered into believing the new image even though I knew it was hype. The new episodes- which I watch on Youtube- and this article definitely snapped me back into reality.

PamAKANinaB said...

Sorry but Kate cannot be "spun". She is what she is. Any attempt to try and make "nice", "fun", "kind" come off as very awkward, forced an unnatural. Why? Because Kate Gosselin is none of these things. It is futile to make Kate Gosselin a likable person - those who think otherwise are caught up in some blind adoration. Good Luck PR People, your job is akin to putting lipstick on a pig.

I didnt know that Jen the producer didnt like Kate!!!! That is hilarious. Do we know this for a fact or is it good speculation? I have been thinking lately that it seems as if TLC or the producers or figure 8 or whoever is setting Kate up to FAIL, and boy does she. But it does make sense that as I read here that Jen would not like her, I mean, Jen has no real say over what happens, because there life is the show right? And yes it may make for good rating, but eventually people are going to stop looking at the trainwreck when all the bleeding is done. Poor kids. =-(

I wonder if it is Julie Carson May's idea that Jon's image should be that of a dunce? "Kate, you should be softer, pretend you like your boys too, don't slap Jon all the time, try to correct his grammar so you sound smart, girl power. Jon, suck it up, you'll get a nice condo in Utah."

Wonderful, thoughtful essay - you laid it out there EOP. I agree with all who say that trying to spin Kate as likable is a losing proposition in the end. I think Kate may have a narcisstic personality type - unable to see any perspective but her own, never does she even question that perhaps she is wrong on some things, and I don't feel any real love coming from her toward the children. That's the thing that is unforgivable to me -- I'm not happy about her greediness, her cutting family members out like so much garbage, or berating and demeaning her husband for the world to see.

But if I felt she truly deeply loved her children, and would do the best for them, I'd merely dislike her.

Instead, I think she's a cold-hearted woman and my heart aches for those children, stuck with her until adulthood, and then will have to deal with goodness knows what emotional baggage for the rest of their lives.

Let's hope the show is cancelled soon and they must actually deal with life like the rest of us, without handouts and freebies up the ying yang. I don't think they'll be able to pay the taxes on that house for long, and soon churches will be too busy simply providing financial aid to their own flock to pay the large speaking fees Jon & Kate take from them. (That's a disgrace and churches really should think twice before spending funds like that -- I'm sure that money would be better spent in helping their own parishioners directly).

I made this comment a few days ago but it didn't get posted. I'll try again!

I think this post is well written, well thought out and right on target. I would only add that I think that the PR people highlight Kate's bad behavior every chance they get. It's the character she plays. Like a character on "Melrose Place" or something. Someone we love to hate. It's TV 101.She is given a set up like the fridge cleaning scene and told to overreact. When she does, we all talk about it and it keeps people watching the show. It works. When interviewers ask Kate about it she acts like it's part of who they are "We're not perfect but it's 'are' life". Jon ignores her and doesn't react because he knows this is set up by the producers and the PR team.
My concern is that they have brought Mady in on this. The second biggest reason (after Kate) that people watch is to see what Mady will do. And, we talk about Mady's behavior. She speaks up on "Access Hollywood" and the commentator talks about her. They set her up for that. If they didn't want Mady to speak up, they didn't have to sit her next to Kate and put a mic on her. She could've been in the back. Again they are using Mady. Poor little thing! It's sad!

I think my husband may have started posting on here. This is exactly his take on the entire show. He expressed these feelings about Kate sometime ago and now feels that Mady is being prepped to be the next villain.

I can't believe that Jon and Kate think that their talks are worth $25,000, first class plane tickets and all expenses paid, when they both sound uneducated and they never answer questions that really matter?

They are worth what people are willing to pay. If someone wants to pay them $25,000, then that is what they are worth. Their worth will go down when people stop paying.

Can someone post the link to The Soup with coupon gate highlited? Thank you

Has the speaking fee of $25,000 ever been confirmed? Surely, all of the churches that they speak at, are not coughing up that kind of money? I can see some of the large events doing so, but not the churches in this economic climate.

They were NOT charging that sort of money when they were doing their own bookings thru their website.

I don't begrudge her what she has, but come on and be nice about it. Even her forced thankfulness is always twinged with sarcasm.
I watched the move in episode where it is move in day and I know it is stressful to move, but when Kate does that -Welcoming the whole world in her new home- routine at the door it is just insane. If you are tired of having your space invaded or having people presume to know you then there is a fast solution. Get off television. No one holds a gun to your head and makes you go on extravagant vacations and move into a mini mansion.
Close your doors, raise your children, berate your husband, organize the hell out of your life, in private. I don't think there will be protests and write in campaigns to bring your show back when it is cancelled. If not then deal with the decision you continue to make about allowing people in and act nice. Not Mary Sunshine Nice, but a little less venom spewing. And yes putting your kids on television is child exploitation. Don't hold yourself above the new octuplet mom Kate because you and she are the same.

Can I just ask where you got the information about TLC getting them a cleaning crew for their new house? You said "we know TLC is paying for it".

Yes, the $25K speaking fee has been confirmed. The churches that were scheduled prior to hirng the PR firm are under their old contracts unless they were willing to renegotiate. Many of the churches were cancelled if a higher paying event could be scheduled.

Whether Kate is being edited, coached by her PR firm, or acting her real self, doesn't really matter. The end result is the same. She comes off as a total self-serving B*TCH. If we are to believe that she is edited or coached by PR people, I wonder how she will "fix" her image once the show ends. What mother would actually "allow" herself to be portrayed that way? This is a reputation she is going to be stuck with LONG after the show is gone. If we are to believe that she is edited or coached, what would it take to convince you that she is not like that in real life? Personally, I have seen so many lies come out of her mouth that I don't think I could ever be convinced that she is anything other than what we see.

Maybe I missed something, but it looked to me like the refrigerator that was there in the move-in episode was different than the one she spent all that time cleaning.

I couldn't agree more. Your values and priorities change over the years. Hopefully, you gain a little wisdom and realize just how unimportant and fleeting material goods can be. Anyone who believes that K&J are doing all this solely for the benefit of their kids are deluding themselves; they have hit the jackpot and are now addicted to the money, fame & perks that have come their way.

BTW, I have to laugh at the Diaper Genie line - that has to be one of the most useless things I ever wasted money on! But of course the ads made it sound SO convenient and sanitary ...

I don't understand the posters praising the original poster for her "research." This is one person's guess as to what happened. The entire post is filled with words like "perhaps" and "maybe". The poster basically made up an entire narrative- and now people are reacting as though it is some verified, researched piece of investigative journalism.

Sorry to be a spoil sport, but I think things like this actually do damage to the cause of getting the show off the air. People coming to this site to find out facts about K&J read this piece of fiction, and it throws the whole site into question.

There ARE facts- the show is on the air, the children are being filmed in their home at least 3-4 days a week, child labor laws do not apply to them, they are not being directly compensated for their work. These are the facts, and they are damning enough.

I thought so too. in fact, wasn't the one she was cleaning custom, with the matching cabinet faces? I could swear it's different.

"Dear Incredible,
What is "sheeple"? Who is GWOP. I guess I should understand since I KNOW that what they say is true. You don't even live in the US so it would be really hard for YOU to understand the American way. WE pay higher taxes so Kate could have her 8 children and OUR great state of PA had to pay for it. I think before condos are bought they should have to pay back the state. That is what I am pushing for. WE are facing one of the most devestating times in our country and every dollar counts. Kate pay the state of PA back before you buy another thing."

I watch J&K, read this blog and have been throughly disgusted with the show and Kate especially for quite some time. I was astonished that so many people waited in line a few weeks ago at her book signings around the country. I made a point of asking people I knew if they watched the show. most did not but the ones that did watched occationally and enjoyed it. My sister in law likes Kate because she is "sassy". I could not believe that not 1 person had any objections to the show. Even when I tried to explain my objections no one wanted to listen or would agree to read anything about them. I am very discouraged!

Yes!! I thought it was different too. The one Kate was cleaning last week matched the cabinets and the one in the moving-in episode looked like it was stainless.

Kate Gosselin has become the mother we love to hate. She's a master manipulator and has systematically created her character for television. I think that is why no other multiple child family will ever be as successful in the reality trade. Some love her, some hate her but no one seems to be able to stop watching her. She's coming into her own and leaving the kids behind. Will that bring the two sides together and quiet the critics? The Martha Stewart of the new millennium. The woman we love to hate.

Sorry, more like a domestic Omarosa than a 'Martha'. At least Martha has some great ideas, and has marketed no one but herself. She has not used small children to gain her success.

Disagree. I don't watch the show anymore and haven't in quite some time. The last thing I want to do is to assist in their exploitation of the children or give her any kind of rating.

No, Wendy, some of us, many of us, I hope, have not watched this very serious Greedlin's phenomenon show for a long time. We simply still object to it being on the air because the children are not as lucky as we are in that they can't get off the show, decide what is shown or where they are shown. They have no voice at all. Yes, I can look away from an accident.

Not everyone watches reality TV. I used to love J&K and would start to talk about it with different friends, but none of them had even heard about them, so I would tell them they should watch it because it is so cute. I hope everyone I said that to has forgotten I recommended the show to them, because now I am embarrassed to tell anyone that I watch it. But now, if I start to watch it, I become a bit grumpy, so I turn it away. Don't need that crap in my life no -- more no way.

AllHopeIsLost said...

I have no hope that this will all end well for this so-called "beautiful life."

The lies, greed and fractures are now so deep, there is no going back.

Thoughts and observations:

Jon & especially Kate Do Not Like People. It is obvious they have no friends, close relatives, or friendly neighbors --just camera people and staff they can boss around. I wonder did anyone know these people before the show? I honestly don't believe she has ever had friends - way too "me,me,me" for anyone to put up with for long, and friendships take give and take. From all accounts she (and to some extent he) is also very rude to most people they encounter. At the very least they believe they are "special" and they ignore those of us who didn't use science to create children to exploit.

I believe Mady and Cara are pemanently damaged by this already. They've lost half of their lives to this mess, seem miserable in their separate ways, and have two of the worst people in the world "pretending" to be their parents when the cameras roll. They are ignored or else have been given negative labels by those same two greedy exploiters they are stuck with.

When Kate is away (her favorite place to be) "working" (and I use that term loosely) which is just about always, it is most likely she spends all her time on her computer in her fancy hotel rooms reading GWOP. At home she likely holes up with her computer in her no-kid zone bedroom in her mansion while the hired help take care of the children, house, etc. She is definitely reading about how much everyone hates her; it is so obvious in how different (and phony) she is on the show. There is no going back from that either. There is a very fine line between watching a train wreck and being absolutely disgusted by that wreck, particulary when innocent children are involved.

Kate's hair: seems logical that her hair stylist hates her too, and tells her she looks great, then laughs the minute she's out the door.

Kate is REALLY waiting for Playboy or some other publication to come calling "to show how great a mother of two sets of multiples" can look after the births. Why else all the work and the claims of salad and a treadmill. She has no idea how average she really is in the looks dept. My husband thinks she is unattractive - in every way. It has become the Kate Minus Nine show in just about every respect.

Jon MIGHT have had a chance to be a halfway normal, albeit boring and not too bright, guy if Kate hadn't gotten her claws into him when he was so young. I can only imagine all the men who ran for their lives from her before she found someone she could really whip.

This is one of the most disgraceful couples I have ever seen, and we can all only hope the ignorant sheeples will wise up and soon. It can only end badly for ALL of the children if it continues. People like this in the end when exposed will be forced off of their pedestals and be humiliated for life. They just shouldn't be allowed for it to ruin their children's lives before that happens.

In response to how to contact P&G I live in Cincinnati. A neighbor works for P&G I may be able to see if there is anyway to contact someone and actually have it received and read. The neighbor I know is a marketing manager for Iams...she use to be Pantene and came up with all the fancy slogans so I would hope she has some foot in the door. Seeing that she boosted Pantene's sales. I'll let ya know when I get to talk to her...she's pretty busy.

I was born and raised in Cinci and still visit my parents there 2-3 times a year. Growing up, P&G and GE were the 2 "biggies" that ruled the area and had great reputations.
This is why I am disappointed beyond belief that P&G would not only continue to sponsor a show that exploits children but also LIE about not having received any complaints about Keight being their spokesperson.

I had a revelation this morning. QFI is instantly recognizable because of her hideous hairstyle. Don't blame her hairdresser. Who would recognize QFI without the bizarre hair? Nobody. The 'do' is QFI's choice.
