Let Philadelphia Magazine Hear From You

If you have read the Jon and Kate article that appeared in the March 2009 issue of Philadelphia Magazine (see our blog entry here), please take a few moments to send your thoughts to the editor at: mail@phillymag.com.

By the way, six weeks ago when we first announced that this article was in the works, its author (Jessica Remo) heard from Laurie Goldberg - Senior VP of Communications for TLC. Goldberg's contribution? Before the article was even written, she labelled Jessica "unethical". I guess that's not surprising, coming from a network participating shamelessly in the Gosselin train wreck: it's OK to exploit children but unethical to expose it.

But hey, Laurie first got wind of the article by reading right here at GWoP, so we can always hope she'll keep reading and maybe grow a conscience one of these days.

Although I never usually write to magazines, editors, shows, etc, I felt overwhelmed at the accuracy of this article and HAD to let them know what a job well done.

We can only pray more people will "see the light" and these two are exposed for the KON artists they are!

Do you think Jon and Kate will actually read the article? I'd love to see their faces if they did!

I will write.

I will also link to the article over on A Touch Of Tuesday Weld, so those who frequent my blog and not this one are sure to see the article.

I, too, was so impressed with a job well done in this article. I wrote to the paper, praising their willingness to print this article, which was obviously well researched. The sheeple will have a field day with this! They will say it's all lies. Slowly, but surely, the truth of Keight is coming out. Let's keep working at stopping their disgusting exploitation of their kids. BRAVO to the Philly Mag and Jessica!!!!
I hope everyone writes to the editor!!!

Just read this article on another source and I must say it was well written and thoroughly researched. This lady not only told it like it is but backed up her findings. I don't see how anyone can dispute anything in the article. She even gave Jon & Kate the opportunity to respond which they ignored or turned down. Great article! It's about time that something like this was published. Oh by the way there had been over 500 responses where I read the article most of them not positive.

Holy Cow, I have heard it all. "Unethical" to write an article attempting to expose the truth? And it's not unethical to show a 3 year old boy sitting on a potty with his pants completely off and taking a dump for millions of viewers? What a sow!!!!!

I will definietly write the magazine and tell them job well done!!!

Go out and buy Yawn and Hate Plus 8 on DVD today! You can zoom in on poop, laugh at Collin while he's being disimpacted, and enjoy Mady's suffering. What's more fun than that?!

Laurie from TLC says Jessica is unethical?

How about Laurie who is part of the exploitation of children what does that make her?!

jonandkatewho? said...

So easy to blow it all off by calling somebody who dares to speak the truth "unethical".

Now if that was coming from somebody who actually HAD any ethics, it might mean something.

But no, just .... no.

That network makes me really angry. They know full well what they're doing. They aren't stupid people, at least I am assuming they aren't, since they sure know how to make a buck off a bunch of kids.

However, this is clearly a case of anybody who dares to expose this bullshit being blown off with a word.

It's just so sad to me that they can't or won't see that they should never have been filming these kids without some restraint. I began to get a bad feeling about the show when I first saw the pooping and so on that they showed. I was horrified at first and couldn't believe what I was seeing, but sort of just went about my business thinking maybe that's just how they do things now. But no. There is no excuse for showing those kids in such private moments. And now there just is no excuse, I realize, for anything they are doing, as they are using those kids and the kids aren't being protected at all.

It makes me truly not want to watch anything on TLC anymore, and that was a channel I always watched quite a lot. I love the "house" shows about flipping houses and finding first homes, and I have always liked What Not to Wear. Well, now we have "How Not to Parent" courtesy of the Gosselins.

How dirty of that woman to call the author of the article unethical. Just dirty.

I just read the article. I see nothing at all 'unethical' about it. This lady was simply stating fact. The fact that Jon and Kate had the opportunity to defend themselves yet didn't speaks volumes to me. It disgusts me that Jon was bragging about never having to work again, even when Kate was still pregnant. And sending a note out to friends and family with their electric account number on it? Beg much KON????? Jon and Kate, you are both PATHETIC excuses for parents.

I have often wondered if that has been an ongoing threat to anyone that has "threatened" to spill the beans.
I think in their minds, they have spun such a web of lies and warped the truth to the point that they believe they are 100% justified in what they are doing.
I have to believe there is more going on behind the scenes than we know?

If the sheeple refuse to see Kon as who they actually are, it doesn't matter. It matters that the sponsors of the show see the truth. Without them, there will be no show. If someone signed a non-disclosure agreement, they might have grounds to sue. However, if they are just disputing what someone said about them who did not have an NDA, they would need to prove that what was said was a lie.

What an absolutely beautifully written article.

John and Kate justify their actions to themselves...they rationalize...it is ok for my daughter's crooked teeth to be shown on national television and for me to comment negatively on her wacky smile, it is ok for my son to be shown pooping, it is ok to show my kids having melt downs, it is ok to berate my husband, it is ok to cut off ties to family and friends, and it is ok to ask for love offerings despite being very wealthy. Why? Because of the glorious opportunities that we will provide for our children in the long run.

What Kon doesn't realize is that the moments in life that lead to the building of integrity, laughter in hindsight, and lessons in ethics do not cost a thing. They are God's gifts, and they are free. These children are being cheated out of some of life's most precious moments! They lack freedom, and that is something that does not come with a price tag but that is priceless.

It is wrong to deny your children a normal child hood. It is wrong to ignore Mady and Cara's cries for help. What parent would allow their daughter to continue to be humiliated on national television by "melt downs" in an effort to garner higher ratings? What parent would not fight to the death for their daughter's reputation when she is slammed by anonymous people on Facebook? It is wrong to denigrate your spouse in front of millions of people while you are supposed to be setting an example, and to have that forever burned onto dvd's. How dare the national media perpetuate this lie by showcasing Kate as some kind of parenting and marriage guru? She cannot even show kindness to her own husband and children. Hate to say this, but Mommy is mean, and Daddy doesn't seem to care.

Just talk to the mag and let them know your concerns. Chances are, they will change your name or something to protect you.

Personally, part of speaking out is standing by what you're saying. Blogs and message boards are relatively anonymous (or can be) but when you start writing to media you often have to decide whether you are going to identify yourself with your words or hide.

How many people do we know who talk behind our backs but when they come face to face, they back down. That's the position you're in.

Personally -- and I speak only for myself -- I will put my name to every word that I say. For me, it's the only way I've ever been able to define myself and my ideals.

I would encourage you to stand up for what you say and let your name stand by your words, but that is certainly a personal decision and one that may leave your open to unwanted crap from people who would rather punish people talking about the Gosselins' bad behavior rather than punishing the bad behavior itself.

The thing that got to me the most were the comments about how this is a Christian site and you're all UN-Christian. Once again, people using religion in ridiculous unscrupulous ways. You guys always let this Pagan speak her mind here. Shame on those commenters for trying to make this a religious site and stealing people's handles.

Are there child advocates in Pennsylvania? What about the state representatives and Senators? Who can be contacted to launch an investigation into the truth about TLC's use of the Gosselins and the Duggers respective 'reality' shows and the overexposure of their children? This is one reason CBS's show, Kid Nation, was cancelled. The network deliberately filmed in a state with little regulation and the children were subject to long hours -- essentially 'slave labor' in exchange for revenue and ratings.

Perhaps the magazine could use your name and last initial and city. I had the same request from Good Housekeeping but they wouldn't waver from their policy. I chose not to have them publish the letter because it was just not worth it. I agree with 3F about sticking up for what you feel but I do have kids and family to consider. I have had someone harrassing me in the past to the point of police involvement and it is not fun. It's a huge pain in the ass, stressful and scary. Seeing what some of these uber-fans write (and I really think it's the fans that are the craziest, not the critics) I would not fault anyone for being wary. Perhaps they will see how emotional the comments on the web are getting and choose to only publish first names - it's worth a shot.

TLC are really showing their bottom feeder traits! Love how they "label" someone before they ever see a written word, but when we see actions on TV we are just "green with envy and haters". TLC is just worried they are going to lose their 8 little "cash cows." TLC cannot spin that this is a "normal struggling" family anymore, and now they are feeling the backlash.

I live 5 minutes over the bridge from Philly in Jersey and ran out yesterday to grab a copy in print and sent in a letter this morning via snail mail so they can see all my personal info on the envelope. I could care less if TLC or the Gosselins know how I feel.

I don't get this, either. Unethical would be lies, not the truth. Would it be because children are involved??

"Unethical"? What? My brain hurts from thinking so hard and I still can't come up with the slightest valid reason why she would say that?

"TLC are really showing their bottom feeder traits!"

Yes, Goldberg's strategy is clear: labeling the reporter as "unethical" before the article was written sets the tone for the way TLC will handle it. It allows Figure 8 and Jon and Kate to refuse to be interviewed, and that's the reason TLC will continue to give in response to any questions about their lack of response.

It doesn't matter that TLC had nothing on which to base their accusation; all they have to do is make it and then continue to repeat it. And as we've seen by the response of the rabid fans, it works. It's much easer to believe the reporter is unethical than to believe that their beloved idols are capable of unethical behavior.

Kudos to Jessica for a very well-written article, and to both Jessica and Philly Magazine for not allowing Goldberg/TLC to bully them into silence with their baseless accusation.

Concerned about the kids said...

Thanks for the feedback. I have no problem standing by my words, but I do have small children, a family business, and reside in a small town--it would be extremely easy to "find me," as it were. I remember reading here about a person's privacy at the hospital being breached, and given the vitrol of some of the comments on the magazine's page, I certainly do not want to open myself up to that level of craziness. I wonder if others have received such backlash for openly criticizing this family? And I will contact the magazine with my concerns. Thanks!

2badsosad said...

If Jessica had written her article and decided not to 'take it to print' but contribute its contents in the form of a blogger comment on GWOP, would the Senior VP of TLC Communications call the author of the article out as being 'unethical'? Is it ONLY because this article was to appear in the form of print circulation that the Senior VP felt it necessary to describe the author's journalistic efforts as 'unethical'?

It Happened said...

I think the reason it is "unethical" is because they are worried that more journalists are going to join Jessica in her campaign to expose the truth behind not only the Gosselins but all the child exploitation TLC and Figure 8 are part of.

I'm still having trouble getting pages 2-6 of the article -- for some reason. It worked fine yesterday. I'm not too computer savy so who knows. Anyway . . . It appears, though, that the supporters of the article far outnumber the snarky comments of the fans. There are definitely some hateful people out there. They have terrible things to say about this blogsite and anyone who blogs on it. YIKES. I just can't fathom how anyone can still believe what J & K have to say, and the fact that these people continue to hand money to them at church events, etc., makes me sick. Too bad for J&K that they've left an enormous paper/data trail, in that most of the crappy things they have done to mislead people about their finances, and the other unscrupulous practices in which they have participated have been well documented. It will be easy for Jon's former employer to defend itself. It is easy too look up their old website and see all thing things that they begged for and all the stupid things Jon said on the triplet connection. The local newspapers in PA have provided everyone with a nice play-by-play of J&K's stupidity since the tups were born.

While Nancy Grace is certainly a crusader, she's also a television personality. I can't imagine that she would go after Jon and Kate, fellow TV "stars." There plenty of non-celebrity child exploiters/abusers to keep Nancy busy, and Nadya Suleman is a ripe topic, despite her media exposure (no important corporate sponsors to protect in Nadya's case). This is a form letter the editor is sending out to anyone and everyone that sends an e-mail to insure that they are authentic. Believe me, they are not going to be printing all our letters. I wish I had written a little more in my initial e-mail but I am sending the link to my friends and family in my address book so that they can write the editor.

For those of you who are afraid of giving your name and hometown.....please don't be afraid...they will publish one or two at the most just like People Magazine does.
What I gather is that the Gosselin PR camp contacted the editor and told them about GWOP and described it as some type of hate blog and if they listen to any of the "other' blog posters, they probably told them there are just a hand full of women who sit around and make up names and post over and over! Yeah, like 3 million hits worth!!! Give me a break!!!

If you don't have a logical way to win an argument, you call the other person dumb, stupid, or "unethical".

I think Laurie had what I call an Adult Tantrum.

An Adult Tantrum is much like a child's tantrum, with two major differences. The obvious one is that the tantrum is preformed by an adult. The second one is that an Adult Tantrum is much more subtle most of the time.

When something doesn't go an adult's way or, as in the case of TLC, Figure 8, and Laurie, they find lies being revealed, they become scared and angry. Like a child screaming that they hate their lives, hate their parents, etc., the adult will claim anything to hurt the opposition. Laurie claiming that Jessica is unethical for doing this article is one of the quieter adult tantrums.

You have all seen Kate Gosselin do Adult Tantrums many times over on her show - loud, shrill, overreacting...the only thing that's missing is the stomping of her feet, holding her breath, and throwing herself on the ground. Sadly, that's not a snark or stab.

I believe that Jessica was very brave and wrote a wonderfully written article. I sincerely hope that more journalists follow in your path and show the truth about Jon and Kate Plus Eight.

I don't think she will touch this. I watched the other night and she made very sympathetic comments about octomom and how it is terrible if anyone goes after a mother of multiples since it is so tough, etc. Doubt she will even believe it.

Regarding Nancy Grace - maybe her sympathetic stance is due to the fact that she is a Mom to twins.

I wasn't going to email the magazine about the article, but I've changed my mind. Who cares if someone knows my name and hometown? Freedom of speech is a precious thing--I'm not going to be intimidated by some over-zealous fans.
Also, notice that the word the woman at TLC used to describe the article was "unethical." I am assuming she did not use the words "inaccurate" or "half-truths." If she did, it would follow that she would have to point out ways in which the article was inaccurate, no? Hmmmm...
Also, the word "ethical" has to do with morality and examining things believed to be "right" or "wrong." If an article describes what some people believe is "wrong" about Jon and Kate Gosselin's behavior--how is that "unethical?"
These network people and PR people probably don't even know the meaning of "ethical."

It never occurred to me not to give my name and home town and phone number to the Philly mag after I wrote them. They've got it and they are welcome to use it and contact me in any way they can. So is Kon -- I would be absolutely delighted to share my views with TLC or Kon or anyone else.

It's unethical to try to expose people for exploiting their kids for money.

You're single handedly trying to destroy a horrible network and horrible parents whose only income is the show.

I can see that that's how they could justify using unethical. Live and let live. Except that the kids are suffering for it.

Truly vile.

O.K., I feel better now knowing that everyone got the same e-mail. I tend to over react, but I get over myself pretty quickly. I've never written to a magazine before so I didn't know what to expect. I had to laugh at myself thinking my e-mail was so good they wanted to print it! Guess my ego is as big as Kate's!!

I emailed them the day it came out. Valerie, the senior editor emailed me back, asking me if she could publish my letter in the magazine and just asked me to verify my hometown and give my phone number to fact check. I said of course!

I just sent an email out to Bill O'Reily with the link to the article. It might help if more do the same, I know he's very interested in the Octomom's babies and I hope he can see the relation to the glorifying of Kate as this supermom, the freebies, product placement, exploitation of these kids, etc. to what might have been this woman's motive to having an HOM herself. Some of you are very good at making a point and hopefully will spark Bill's interest in the Gosselin kids as well. There are clearly questions that Jon and Kate need confronted with and need to answer.

Ditto for on the standard reply email.

In my original email, I did include my address but not my phone # because it is unlisted.
