Soup and a Surprise, Monday, January 5

With such a large family, Jon and Kate always plan for ways to save money and time. On this day, Kate plans to make lots of soup to freeze for the upcoming winter season, but the day doesn't quite go as she expected.

This episode takes place in their old home. This is probably one of the very last episodes that they can salvage from the cutting room floor to use as an episode, so that the viewers are kept waiting for the episodes from the new house.

I have not watched since the Hawaii Vow Renewal, but i think i may have to break my promise and watch this episode... JUST TO SEE how they justify and explain this one... But i have a feeling that the episode will drag on and on and finally in the last 30 secs is when they announce they are "moving" and then it cuts to commercial. I don't think we will see the "Konpound" for several episodes. But i could be wrong.

MC said...

In the commercials where they say were moving look at Maddy or Cara's face (I cant really tell who because they are hard to see) Their face looks like they are very sad.

I'm not watching! I haven't since this summer and my curiosity about the house isn't enough to get me to watch. They probably won't even show the house or even really talk about it. I can see it just being a "teaser" for future episodes. I'd rather come here and read about it than waste my time watching!

An episode devoted to Kate. Making. Soup. yawn.......

Although, maybe she will pepper (pun intended) the episode with soup making tips such as : Fill pot with water and add ingredients. Simmer unil hot. Serve in round, shallow vessel , with grilled cheese sandwich that has been cut on the diagonal.

So, once again, Kate is trying to perpetuate the belief that she needs to save money because it's SO HARD for them to make ends meet. I have quite a bit to say about that, but most of it involves words my mother always told me I wasn't allowed to say.

DirtyDisher said...

Gee, I wonder what happens? Does a big wad of money drop out of the sky and splash the soup? Another entire day wasted in the laundry room on stain removal. Darn that money!

Now, come on you know you want to watch Kate make soup, what could possibly be more exciting. There is a real art to cutting up carrots and celery.

Because Jen Stocks told her to. That's why Kate does anything related to motherhood or domestic life - because Jen, her producer, says she has to for the sake of the show. That's why you saw her making Christmas cookies last year.

How stupid do the show's producers think the general public is? In an economy when people are losing their jobs and homes on a daily basis, you're telling me we should take tips on saving money from a family that has just bought a 1.3 million dollar home?

Instead of Kate showing us how she makes soup, I would like to watch an episode where she explains how she gets so much free stuff. i.e. begging, threatening, pimping etc

I guess my mother who raised 6 children and my grandmother who raised 13 children (during the depression era no less) were really 'experts' before there time!

I live 60 miles west of DC, hope that doesn't bring Kate to my doorstep.

I guess now when there is no food from filming Kate can zip home from NYC and throw some soup on the stove. We all know how good she does with a box of snack crackers so there ya go dinner's done and on a budget. Throw in a couple of M&M's if you eat all your soup and crackers, you got dessert and it's bedtime for Kate, the best time of the day.

This epi, including the next two, all seem so boring.

All Smiles:

Snooze! Come on, we've already seen the kids go to the dentist. Talk about running out of ideas, you'd like to think those poor kids could get some privacy during such a personal experience.

Plus, how exactly can they already tell if the twins will need braces? What do they have, maybe eight of their adult teeth? Obviously there are some kids who you can tell are going to need work done at a young age, but Cara and Mady seem okay at the moment. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't second graders kind of known for having spaces in their teeth?

All you Wanted to Know:

I won't even touch this one, other than by saying they will not let us know "all we wanted to know". And seriously, do we need ANOTHER Q&A epi? This is just an excuse for an easy way to earn a full episodes wage by those two clowns talking in front of the camera for a wasted twenty-four minutes of my life. Of course, when stated that way, meaning that the cameras don't have to follow the kids around all day, it's not that bad I guess.

Sounds like a local orthodontist has hopped aboard the Gosselin Promotional Train. Poor girls. I was not a fan of the dentist or orthodontist growing up, so I feel especially bad that these personal moments can't be private. Kids can start orthodontic treatment as early as 8 or 9 years, I believe. My brother started with a palatal expander at eight and had braces at nine (back in '88). Most likely, the twins are being evaluated for future treatment. Expanding the upper jaw is easier the younger the patient is.

Dumb question, but how exactly does one freeze soup? I'm picturing 10-15 stockpots covered in shrink wrap in the freezer. It doesn't sound possible unless you have a separate storage freezer (which the G's do).

Maybe she is making soup to save the humiliation of having to go to the soup kitchen to feed her family. We all know she is so so poor and we should all provide something to them. I think we should ban together and send them soup. Then dear Kate will be less exhausted and have more time to slap Jon around.
Plus - the producers would have to explain why soup keeps arriving by mail.

Does anyone else think that Kate's desparately trying to make a brand of herself? I'm thinking she's just dying to launch a pathetic line of organic food that the sheeple would buy in Sam's Club portions. Her proposal would show this episode and some of the other old favorites--but nothing from the new mansion, which would take away from the simple, Holly Hobby, golly-gee smalltown girl line she'd be marketing.

The only problem is that it's rather tough to launch a line that only has Monkey Munch and onion soup. She's the barefoot without the contessa!

CPMOM said...

Let's be fair to Kate...
I think she is quite capable of making homemade soup. Judging by the episode when she leaves for 2 weeks to have her tummy tuck, she cooked and froze meals for two weeks. I think she can and will make it from scratch.

I love working on Monday nights now, I get my updates on Tues. morning right here on GWOP, Thank you.
I wish I could have been a fly on the wall when they heard they are "SPENT" and the 10 resolutions, very embarrasing, don't think, if that were me, I would every want to show my face again. I would drive up to my Konpound and live in the attic, sorta like Edward Scissorhands. hehe.

I think she is going for a lifestyle/cooking show. Jen, Jon the kids and the crew praise her cooking. I think that is all it takes for Kate to think she is a good cook. It would never dawn on her that people are just being gracious b/c she is so graceless. I think that is one of the reasons she stayed in Penna. She wants to stay close to NYC to market herself. And yes she wants to be a brand. I am sure if she has anything to do with it you will be buying monkey munch or what ever it is and possibly organic soup soon.

We knew our oldest daughter (now ten years old) was going to need braces even when she was a preschooler, because her baby teeth were so close together, it was clear that there would not be enough room for all her adult teeth. She started wearing braces when she was nine and is doing great. Our second daughter is eight and was just measured for a retainer because her top front teeth aren't lining up right with her bottom teeth. So yes, you can realistically get started with braces when you still have your baby teeth. It's a long and expensive process! Do you think TLC provides J&K with good health insurance?

It should be noted that this episode of "Kate making soup and freezing it for the winter" is NOT newly filmed.

This episode was one of those 'mystery' episodes that was listed in the TV guide but never aired. So this means, of course this episode is not going to be filmed in the new house. In fact, I'm positive that it was filmed LAST winter.

My guess for tomorrow's episode is that they will show the majority of the soup-making/freezing as the show, and then the "surprise" will be just a 5 minute talk about moving (aka. hyping everyone up for 3 weeks before actually filming them in their new house).

If TLC is smart, they would drag out any other episodes filmed in the old house before showing them in the new house.

I'm picturing a scene similar to the movie "Problem Child" when Junior leaves the orphanage. All is quiet as the Gosselins leave. Then the instant they have pulled out of the neighborhood, loud cheers and releasing balloons and confetti.

grandee4: Lordy bee, whats next, the twins first visit to the Gyno?

If the show is not cancelled, I predict: "The Twins Buy Their First Bras". Disaster strikes when the tup boys "borrow" them to play "David and Goliath". Poor Cara and Mady.

Maria said...

Shell76 asked how you freeze soup. I keep plastic containers that sherbet came in, and then I freeze soup in those (with the lid on). It's pretty easy. But my experience is that it doesn't last long in the freezer-i.e. doesn't freeze well- probably because of the high water content. But if you are only going to freeze it for a week or two, I think that is okay.

My re-cap of Kate making soup.

1. Kate goes to fridge and pulls out veggies [pre cut by personal chef].

2, Kate yells at crew to give her space in her kitchen!

3. Kates adorable children trying to get affection/attention from Kate while she's organizing veggies. Kate takes a moment to yell at them to get out of "her" kitchen its her space! Mady runs off in tears.

4. Kate pops veggies and water into pot looks into camera and smiles and says "no one appreciates all I do".

5. Kate takes a moment to yell at Jon for whatever he did to set her off!

Camera now at couch:

6. Jon looking [sleepy] tries to get a word in edge wise while Kate drones on and on about how hard her day was. THE END!

I quit watching this show months ago - so this is based on shows I used to watch that all seemed the same after awhile.

I freeze soup every fall, in harvest season when everything is cheaper, do you think that this was filmed then, or would that take brains on their part! I pour it into ziplock bags, seal, then freeze on a cookie sheet. I find this takes up the least room and is easy to defrost.

"Lordy bee, whats next, the twins first visit to the Gyno?". ROTFL! You rock!

I have to admit that the new Konpound makes me want to move to PA, Where I live you would be lucky to get a 2500 sq foot house and one acre for that price. But that would mean I might run into the shrew and the nutless wonder, to me that is to high of a price to pay!

I think the question has been raised here before regarding "how" the Gosselins are going to explain away their new mansion? Sadly I think that these kids have been so many places that very little would get a reaction from them. I think that you could tell them that they were flying to the moon, and Mady and Cara would not care, it is just another show! It shows that these kids are so very unhappy and their lives are so far from normal that they do not even react anymore. They have compeatly shut down, more Cara then Mady but they both have to some degree.

So how long do we think it will be before they show the inside of the McMansion on the show? I mean they dragged out the Hawaii show for 3 episodes. Wonder if they will drag the "We're moving" to 3 or 4 shows?

And how cringing was that ad for "We're moving!". It made my stomach hurt because it was so staged and Kate looked so ridiculous.

You know, if Kate Gosselin wants to "brand" herself--sort of a wannabe Martha Stewart-- then I suggest she find more inspiring ideas than making soup and freezing it or cutting coupons. I was taught how to cook as a child--8-9 years old--and soup was one of the first things I learned. Most soup recipes are not that difficult. I'm wondering if Kate will do all the prep work for the soup--chopping, dicing, making stock, etc.--that's where the labor comes in.
Also, regarding the new house--1.3 mil buys A LOT of house in many areas of PA--particularly the rural ones. There is no possible way that the G's can construe the purchase of this house and property as something that the average PA family can afford, IMO.

1) She burnt the soup, and it's Jon fault.
2) She caught the kitchen on fire because she had too many kids under her feet, also Jon's fault. She yells at him HellOOOOOOO! come get your kids the kitchen is on fire. Jon runs to the garage, grabs a bucket, oops, can't bring it inside to fill because it's dirty,so he runs around the yard looking for the hose, he finds it and still cant bring the bucket in so he runs back in the garage and gets the soap and washes the bucket. Now he can bring it in, filled with water, so he can save Kate's precious, me kitchen. By the time he gets in there, 10 mins later, Scott grabbed the fire extingusher from under the sink, put the fire out, and kate has started another pot of soup.
Now, her kitchen is ruined sand they need a bigger one, so they tell the world "We're moving".
I only heard a few responses from the kids, probably Haddie and Leah.
On the dreadful couch (which, I hope they burn, they rationalize why they need a new house, because the kitchen is now a fire risk.
Please, somebody bring me a bucket, you don't have to clean it before you bring it in my house. And please, don't put me in the cold damp laundry room on the floor. I promise, I will never barf again, I will swallow it, so I don't mess the carpet.

I won't be watching tonight, but I can't wait to hear what excuses Kon comes up with for the big new house. My prediction is that they will somehow try to say they are cramped with not only the kids but the production crew/equipment, thus they needed the spacious new digs for that reason. I'm glad I missed the "they may move to NC" scare, though. I live in NC in a city that is already home to a movie studio & a TV show, so there's no room at the inn for Kon! Looking at the promo for this episode, not only do the twins not seem thrilled about the move, but Kate herself seems less than enthusiastic. I can't imagine why, unless maybe they're going to give us 3 episodes where she mopes around & complains about having to pack up the house. Yeah, that's probably it. They'll try to make us think that this move is actually a stressful, trying time for poor Kon.

Not at all here, it just must be where I live. I didn't go until 12 for any kind of evaluatio (as they thought I needed them for about a month, but then changed their mind when my teeth grew in) and that was only in 2006. In a grade of 300, I think maybe ten kids, tops, had braces before seventh grade, but some did have expanders in fifth. Perhaps we're just behind the times, because nobody here thinks about braces until ten or eleven. Odd.

Oh and I almost forogt-
Someone previously mentioned, some of the Gymbo clothes are beginning to look a bit babyish on the twins. As much as I hate these elementary kids who try growing up too fast, I also don't like them not being allowed to mature naturally. I don't know how it works, if they have to wear Gymboree on ever epi now or something, but you'd like to think they could wear what they wanted. It's not just the brand though, sometimes I think the twins clothing looks "younger" than what the tup girls are wearing. They DO make items that look appropriate on the 6&up crowd, as well as for the preschoolers. I thought Kate got to pick everything out? Hmm, perhaps this is similar to the bibs?

By the way, I do appologize for once again being random...

I think Kate will give herself credit for 'thinking up freezing soup'. Remember on the 4th of July episode when she said 'I came up with the flag cake all on my own' When if you open any magazine there was the design and recipe? I can hear her now 'I came up with this great idea of making a lot of soup and freezing it so we would have it later.' I also agree with her screaming to get the kids out of the kitchen so she can cook. CRAZY WOMAN!!!

Dunwoody Mom said...

As a mom of 7, let me tell you making food ahead of time and freezing makes life so much easier. I know my kids will be eating nutritional meals, even when I'm tired to cook. I'm sure this is exactly what Kate is thinking. It's how moms with lots of kids think.

I'm a Mom of 2 and I spend Sunday afternoon cooking and freezing that week's dinners. My kids are active and I'm carpooling them hither, thither and yon after school. Giving Kate credit for this is ridiculous.

I agree with you that Cara and Maddy look sad/upset. They are the only ones not yelling "Yah!" I'm not surprised, I wouldn't want to leave my school or friends at that age either.

As far as the tups go, I'm sure they don't fully understand what "moving" consists of anyway. Jon and Kate probably told the kids they had a huge "surprise" and then when they said "We're moving," the tups didn't know how else to react.

Reading a description of tonight's thrilling episode ... how is anyone going to keep their eyes open? Let's face it, TLC and Kon artists, the Gosselins are just not that interesting. The novelty of having a bunch of kids has long ago worn off. The kids are just not that cute anymore. The only reason I can see to suffer through this is to write a terrific funny recap about it.

Just Me said...

I know they're announcing that they're moving tonight but I wouldnt count on seeing the house or hearing the explaination, not until they drag it out for a few more epis and then, its not like they're going to say "and we bought this million dollar home because its the ONLY one we can all fit in" They probably will only say they're moving and then have a breif talk about it and the show will be over.

They will just say that its bigger for them all and the sheeple will never wonder because come on, it cant be THAT expensive if the poor, struggeling Gosselins can afford it!

Also, I watched the twins turn 6 epi today, my they sure have changed a lot! I havent watched any of the new ones in a few months but back then, she almost seemed to be.... decent! It was suprises that the girls truly loved, there was no private busses hearding them around and much less yelling, she even seemed to have more tolerance for the boys!

Sad that they are where they are now, poor kids!

The Move is going to be the next big Jon & Kate plus 8 EVENT.

Just like the vow renewal was stretched for like a dozen episodes, the whole moving process will be stretched into a dozen or so episodes as well.

Ep 1 - Announcement of moving plans

Ep 2 - Kate explains how to put things in boxes and explains how cardboard boxes really are the best thing to use when moving.

Ep 3 - Kate explains the process involved in changing addresses for mail and other things involved with moving.

Ep 4 - Kate explains that hiring a moving company really makes the job easier.

Ep 5,6,7,8 - The process of packing up the house, loading the vehicles, loading the kids, traveling to the new house and unloading the trucks, all dragged out over 4 episodes. Complete with Kate complaining about how the movers are doing everything wrong.

Ep 9 - Kate explains that putting stuff away in the new house is so much easier because they have so much space.

Ep 10 - Kate explains how different live is, now that they live somewhere else.

Ep 11 - Once settled in, the family explores the area around the house, including the woods.

Ep 12 - Kate complains because they are already outgrowing this house and she is ready for something bigger.

Let's be fair to Kate...
I think she is quite capable of making homemade soup. Judging by the episode when she leaves for 2 weeks to have her tummy tuck, she cooked and froze meals for two weeks. I think she can and will make it from scratch.

Food for two weeks - for a tummy tuck? My husband had to push me out the door when my daughter was 6 mos. old so I could have some time alone and see the new Lethal Weapon movie that was out. (Obviously, years before Mel Gibson lost it, I would not make the same mistake now!) Also, make no mistake, I would never want any parent to be as over-involved as I was - but that is a wide margin from leaving for 2 weeks for a tummy tuck! I couldn't leave mine, and don't judge those who could, but 2 weeks for cosmetic surgery? Yaaah, never mind, I am obviously being judgmental - but only because of all the supporting data. Rock on - lipo man - I may have managed more than 2 hours away from my child if I was going to have my stretch marks removed too!

Did anyone else hear Kate say she 'freezes again' the roast beef scraps? I always thought once you freeze and thaw meat, you can't/shouldn't re-freeze it again.

If she's using the organic beef (i.e., the 1/2 of cow she bought from the farm), she thawed it to cook it, then she froze the scraps, and then thawed them to use in the soup which will then be frozen again?

fozzybear said...

Yes, you can freeze cooked meat. The rule of thumb is that you can't thaw and then refreeze uncooked meat.

Thawing and then refreezing raw meat causes...

1. The cells to be broken down by the ice crystals formed when the meat freezes.

2. All meat has bacteria on it. By freezing we slow the growth rate of the bacteria. When we thaw the meat it reaches a temperature where, said bacteria can grow and multiply.

3. FYI Freezing raw meat does not kill all bacteria. Some can live in freezing temps.

Hope this helps.

C said...

Sorry, meant to say could KATE being any more excited on the couch interviews. Couldn't believe how bored she looked!

Did you hear Kate say she lets the frozen soup THAW on the counter and then warms it up and serves with yes,GRILLED cheese. I would be afraid the organic chicken and refrozen beef would be tainted when left to thaw at room temp.

Joanne said...

Given we've known about the new house for months, you'd think they wouldn't have said the move was a surprise.

Exhausted Again said...

Three more points...

+If this show isn't staged, then Kate's soup isn't organic. I don't think J+K even know what's real anymore because everything they do is prompted by the show. Otherwise, when not filming, you can't find one of them. I don't believe many kids are so clueless about a move that their parents need to make a formal announcement. They weren't looking at houses before? Meeting with a realtor? Etc etc. It's all for the benefit of the cameras. I think Mady didn't look surprised or excited because she already knew this.

+Nap time equals lock kids in their room time. I have a four year old who hasn't taken a nap in two years. I realize some kids her age still do take naps, but many do not, and kids should be able to have some choice in the matter. Our six-month old sometimes wakes up after only a 15-minute nap, but what should we do, just leave her locked in there? It's absurd how these horrible people just put their own needs first.

+And am I wrong or did Kate really call Alexis "a disturber"? You could not be that cold. You could not.

MayDay said...

I just loved it when Jon was being very silly with the playdoh and making the kids laugh. It was good old fashion fun. Of course Kate had to reprimand him and remind him he needs to be the adult setting an example. She spoils everything!

When Kate was on the couch and was explaining way she was moving, she looked like she was going to cry.
I think she is so embarrassed of the things she has done she wants to hide herself from the people in her community that know the whole story.
When she travels they don't know about the fighting with governmental agencies for the nurse. They don't know about all the unjustified begging.
I was wondering if she would be able to stay awake at first. Good thing she had that arm to hold that head up.
I am sort of glad I watched this, I feel better knowing things are getting to her. I sure it won't make her change but I hope it makes her think.

Dont-re-freeze-meat said...

I'm still not convinced it's wise to re-freeze cooked meat.

Did you like the clarity of the statement of "our forever house, more or less"? Huh?

At least the kids looked happy or at least happier. They looked happy to be playing w/ the play-doh and playing in the bouncy house.

nomorekon said...

- annoying that now Jon has to emphasize that everything they eat is organic

- Alexis is sleeping by herself in her own room, what a surprise (did you hear one of the kids ask if her new room would be in the basement?)

- why did Kate have to correct Jon when he said "switch" instead of button when he was talking about the oven ? she is such a biatch.

- KON b*tching and moaning about how small the house is. well, I could be wrong, but a camera crew and all that equipment just MIGHT be part of the problem

- "hugely better" for the kids - good God where does this woman get her vocabulary ?!

- nice 30 minute commercial for Play Doh

- "you are supposed to be an example" um, yes, Kate, you ARE supposed to be an example to your kids

- that smile of Alexis' could melt Antarctica, what a cutie pie !

Sorry for the banter- I was jotting these down before I forgot.
All in all a boring epi....

I wonder if Cara and Mady kept asking if Jon and Kate were sure about the move b/c of the house in NC that didn't happen.

All in all this episode was what I expected. Cooking, yelling, and toy demonstration, all punctuated with boring commentary. Kate said exactly what we all knew she would say about the house. They need more space, blah, blah, blah.

I think what she didn't say was more interesting. The vague 'I don't know how big it is, but it's bigger than this house.' Who doesn't know the square footage of a house that you're moving into? Also, no comment about how blessed they are to be able to afford to be moving into their "forever" house, despite both being stay at home parents. Can't wait to hear more about it in later episodes.

--------------------------
I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who caught that! That really made me mad! Girls grow up to do the cooking and cleaning?

Also- I brought a topic up in another discussion group months ago, and it's probably very obvious by now, but has anyone noticed the huge gap in the form of Alexis vs. Hannah and Leah? This was what I originally wrote (even before they mentioned that Alexis still shares the little girls room even tho she doesn't sleep in there):

"Is it just me or does it seem like Hannah and Leah are always grouped together and Alexis is separate? I know that Hannah and Leah get along well and I know that Alexis was originally put in the basement because she woke everyone up, but it seems that in other ways, Alexis is considered separate from Hannah and Leah.

Like on Girls Day Out, Kate is talking about how the boys went golfing and she didn't think "Hannah and Leah" would like that... what about Alexis? And when talking about nap schedules, she only talks about Hannah and Leah, and it seems like Alexis doesn't even go in the basement for naptime. And in general, Jon and Kate seem to refer to the 6 as "the boys" and "Hannah and Leah"

Thoughts anyone? Am I completely off base?"

Then of course there was the whole discussion about Alexis sleeping in the basement, and now in the new house she has a room to herself while Hannah and Leah are together. I don't think it has to do with favoritism, but it kinda bothers me because Hannah and Leah probably view Alexis as the "other."

Kate, looking surprised, maybe even of the cusp of panic: Where they organic?

Jon giving Kate his 'get a clue' look: "No Kate I said they were Philadelphia hot dog's."

(This is what he should of said)

Jon:No Kate I said they were Philadelphia hot dog's.Not only are they not organic but they contain separated chicken pieces. Not only that but they are pumped full of preservatives and all kinds of other chemical's."

Then we watch as Kate demands that Jon divorce her and then runs off to the hospital to get her kids stomach's pumped.

You know this must have been taped PRIOR to the "tups" 4th birthday, as Kate states, 'a great question for a 3 year old".
So, this was filmed in , or before , May 2008.

Then, did you notice how 'quiet' Kate was during the 'couch' talk? It seems the PR people are really 'reading" our comments, and adjusting things!

I think this was the first 'footage' I've ever seen taped, where they show the children playing for more than a few moments, without 'fighting'. I really thought moments like this occurred, but they never showed them before!

Then, Lastly, for now, did anyone CATCH what "Mady" asked? If she could have her own "little cottage"? I'm not sure if it's a playhouse outside or what, as Kate agreed to let her plant flowers around it, as long as it was a pre-mixed seed package. ..Hum...
ANd, that Alexis will have her own room, across from Leah/Hannah, because she wakes them up.
SO, I guess the 5 rooms will be: K/J,,Mady/Cara..The boys..Leah/Hannah,..then Alexis...
I wonder how the 'twins' feel about sharing a room, since they're older, when Alexis gets her own room?

Look forward to hearing all of your comments on this show.

I've got a question for all of you.

If I ever accidently left a lid on top of my stove and burnt an area, I'd have to Live with it, (at least for many months, if not years), as I certainly would not be able to afford to just replace it.

Was anyone else surprised at how quickly Kate got a new stove, just because of ONE BURNER?

I know they've got the money, but what a waste...someone could have used that stove/oven, for quite a while, even with the one burner 'stained'. Even if the ONE BURNER wasn't usable anymore, it is still a great stove, with 3 great burners left.

________________

It was a glass top stove with a big piece of glass gone, I don't think it would be safe to use. I lay lids down on mine all the time. I think that burner was also on, the one where she put the lid. I think that is why they have little red lights so you know which one are hot....all heck who knows she could of dropped something from the cabinet on it. You know nothing is ever Kate's fault.

How about Jon saying the Playdough was "one and done" Uhm....my kids play with playdough and mix all the colors. Still works just fine. That shed in the backyard is probably filled with playdough and other unopened new toys that they bring out just for one episode.
And did you like how they kept focusing in on the Little Tykes logo on the bounce house? LAME!

Shannon said...

What makes me most sad for these kids (from what we see on the show) is the memories they'll have of their mother during their childhood. I know some people thrive on cleanliness and organization, but Kate spends the majority of her time AWAY from her children. She comes out to watch the Play-Doh fun (arms crossed, scowling) long enough to comment on the mess and nag Jon. "This looks like a great mess for Daddy to clean up. Aren't you glad we have a daddy?" And what was so wrong with Jon being silly/gross with the kids? They were eating it up!

I grew up in a family of 6 where there was never enough money to go around, but I had an incredibly happy childhood. My mom helped us make mud pies in the backyard, tie-dye shirts, splash in the bathtub, etc. I especially loved playing "beauty shop", putting makeup on her :) I've asked her in my adulthood how she dealt with the mess, and I loved her response. She said you can always clean up a mess...she was dreading the days when we were "too cool" to spend time making a mess with her.

I know it may be hard for Kate to do, but I wish she'd put herself on her children's level and ENJOY them. Even if she has to fake it, I'd love to see her doing a fun, messy, kid-friendly activity without having a come-apart. Maybe that could be her New Year's resolution...

TLC and the PR people were careful not to show the McMansion or describe it in any way other than it is bigger. I wonder if we will ever actually see the full video of the house. I'm thinking they will try to hide the grandeur.

Kate looked clinically depressed as well as bored.

Kate did refer to Alexis as "a disturber". What a strange reference to a 4 year old. Kate seems to isolate Alexis, she wants Hannie and Leah to be the twosome.

The tups would be 4 and a half in the moving discussion, still in high chairs and bibs.

I would have thought Kate would have had a water conditioner if she had bad water. If that is the case it is ashame she could not have found a sponser, My Dad had a Culligan franchise and you can clear up anything, more or less a build in filtering system.

The stove was probably quickly replaced because they had an episode to shoot! HELLLOOOOO!!! Can't have 'Soup and a Surprise' without the soup!

But yes, it is a little bit revolting how Kate probably sped up the process using her magical powers ("I need a stove now! I am a celebrity!) so that they would have an episode to shoot.

Casey and Smudge said...

Just a note re- Kate's stove. I have one and totally hate it, but it came with the house and a new stove is a long way away, so I'll deal with it's high-maintenance needs! Anyways, once the stovetop is broken or cracked, it cannot and should not be used - you can electrocute yourself or be hit with flying glass. In the owner's manual it states very clearly not to place cold items on the glass top to heat (i.e. frozen soup), or place hot items (lids, casseroles out of the oven) directly on the cool stovetop. So be careful! Always check cookware to see if it can be used safely on a glass cooktop. Certain finishes can actually fuse themselves to the cooktop. They're expensive to replace, about as much as buying a new stove! Not that Kate probably had to replace her's. She's lucky no one got hurt.

Chrissy said...

When Kate was complaining about the soup not being ready till bedtime, the clock above her read 11:45 and she'd already been cooking the soup for a while. I make soup all the time - stock takes a few hours at best to cook. Just another example of Kate's exaggerated woe-is-me complaining.

MelB said...

It really IS ok to re-freeze cooked meats, just don't thaw raw meat, then re-freeze THAT. Example, when I make lasagna, I usually make several. The meat in it is (of course) cooked. One should always thaw food with any meat in it in the refrigerator though, not on the counter-top! Big containers of soup like that would take 2 days in the fridge to thaw though, so some forethought is required.

I don't see why getting the new stove so quickly was such a big deal.

If you go to a place like Sears and they have an appliance that you want in stock, you can have it delivered the next day, sometimes even later the same day if you go early enough.

People do that all the time.

Was anyone else surprised at how quickly Kate got a new stove, just because of ONE BURNER?
--------------------------

I was wondering if someone else would notice the stove.

In my house, we have one of those glass top cooktops that is separate from the oven. Ours has cracked 3 times. Once something dropped from an overhead cabinet and it broke all the way across. Second time, we put a hot pan from the oven on it. So what Kate did could make her cooktop break. However, I have NEVER seen any of our cooktops break like that. It's usually a fairly straight crack.

Because I've seen what a broken cooktop due to heat looks like, I really think Kate wanted a new stove to help sell the house, so she took a hammer to that thing. It's what that stove looked like.

There is no reason why the cooktop portion of that stove couldn't have been repaired since there was nothing else wrong with it. Kate got "lucky" this happened before TLC was going to film her cooking. I bet they paid for the new stove or at least found someone to donate it.

The only way the rest of her cooktop couldn't be used would be if the break was on them. Even if it was broken, she could have made do with an electric burner or two before the move, especially since they eat cereal for breakfast and the chef makes their organic meals.

AUNTY K.K. said...

Thank you all for your comments about the stove.

It makes sense now, that if any part of the top breaks it's too dangerous to use, and you have to either have the stove replaced, or buy a new one.

Interesting , she just got a whole new one, and a new HUGE one at that! (See how it hardly fit?--It would be a 'brute' to take out for moving!)

YOU know what's interesting with this whole thing?

That Kate always states JON knows nothing about cooking....and here KATE DIDN"T obey the instructions, or was too "above" reading the instructions and just, "KNEW" how to cook on it, ...and as a result of either NOT reading, or just being "a know-it-all", a lid got put on top..

BUT, JON did not humilitate or degrade Kate for her faults.

WOW. I wonder, will this marriage last?

A lot of people might buy a stove from a small business, they might not have a Sears, Lowes or Home Depot where they live. As for the other poster we have all certainly heard Kate throw her name around. She did when she call the radio station about the yard sale.

Another point: I wonder if the churches that took up the love offerings are going to post Kate's new house on their home page or hallway bulletin board so the donors can see what they helped buy.

RuthinVA: I don't think Kate is embarrassed or ashamed AT ALL. She has no conscience, she has no shame. They are moving BACK to Berks County that they left in spring 2006. They alienated everyone there and became persona non gratas. I do not see how she will be able to shield herself in the new place in Wernersville. Everyone knows them and even though they have surrounded their property by a security fence and it is on a lot of land and remote, she will still run into people from the community at some point. I think she may have seemed sad only because TLC could not get that builder/construction firm to donate a new home in VA or NC.

No, they never blurred out their pink calendar in the early episodes. It's only recently that they started to realise they had to "protect their privacy" (HAHAHA, now why don't you apply that to the rest of your children's childhoods?!)

But IMO, I think the blurring out started when we at GWOP commented on seeing a comment written about the 'cupcakes celebration' written on the calendar. I guess their PR team thought it's no longer wise for us to see what they're really up to in their daily out-and-abouts.

Oh my gosh - it's been 25 years but I had a friend who was exactly like Kate. I met her when our first kids were born and then our second children were born 2 to 3 years later. She constantly put down her children - EXACTLY like Kate!! (I suppose I should add Jon but in this case the husband didn't belittle the children like Jon does - double whammy for the Gosselin kids) Just like in the episode tonight where Kate said, "You're a disturber" my friend had perpetual put downs of her kids and thought it was witty. Just like after they announced they were moving and Kate asked the kids if they had questions but when one of them hesitated she put her down. Kate's approach was, "Ask questions if you want but forget us answering you seriously because you are just kids ..." Constant put downs of the kids.

Why in the world do Jon and Kate supporters think it is okay to talk to children the way that they do? How can anyone honestly support Jon and Kate Gosselin's treatment of their children?

Anyway, my friend's two kids ended up in serious trouble by age 14. Drugs, drinking, car wrecks, one dropped out of high school, one turned to meth freshman year of college, one divorced now - overwhelming sadness. And throughout their childhood that I witnessed - CONSTANT put downs by the mother! Just like Kate! My friend, who was also a control freak and had to have everything in perfect order - so much like Kate it is eerie - and she thought the little put down remarks about her daughters were funny. She could never see that she, herself, was part of a family dynamic - oh, no - it was all a fault of the children when they got into trouble as teenagers. Her reasoning was her daughters had a beautiful house with a pool, nice clothes, expensive things ... "how could they not appreciate their life! And me!!"

So for all of you who think that Jon and Kate are funny and just acting the way anyone would if they had 8 kids - well, it is child abuse - plain and simple. Please know it is wrong to make public jokes at your child's expense - at the sake of your child's humiliation (please refer to the episode dealing with the son's constipation). Having 8 children is no excuse for treating them differently than you would if you had had one child.

It's as if Kate and Jon are saying "We had multiples by artificial medical intervention and therefore we can verbally abuse each other and demean our children because we are victims of our own choice."

I just ran into the youngest my friend's children - she is 27 years old now and fortunately doing well enough though she said she has very little contact with her family and no contact with her sister. She completely separated herself from them as I suspect many of the Gosselin children will do.

Look into the future, Jon and Kate - you are ruining your kids by constantly putting them down and acting as if they have no voice. Yes - it is to your financial advantage to have them all under your power, but they will grow up and if my friend's daughters are any indication - they will resent the hell out of you.

I remember the camera hovering a shot over the calendar on something that they were going to do that day, but on the date before that, they had written something like "cupcake celebration after dinner" or something like that. Which means that the cupcake 4th bday episode was CLEARLY just an episode made for the viewers to see them 'celebrate' the sextuplets' 4th bday. Because like others have said, for their 4th bday, they had a private dinner/thing that was not filmed. So that cupcake thing was scheduled into their calendar.

That's what I got from seeing that shot of the calendar anyways :) Anyone else want to confirm/disprove?

So maybe Kate pouring the water was just staged to make it seem like she was actually doing something, then as soon as the cameras were off her... In goes the already made stock...which I would of done to begin with, but why fake it.

She touted this day as her "annual" soup making day. I actually thought she was going to cook enough soup to last in the freezer for 6 months or something.
At the end of the cooking, she claimed that the soup would make about 6 different containers of soup that she could freeze for later. That's six meals. OK...and you make an episode out of that? Also, at the beginning, I heard her say that the soup would be a change from them having cereal all the time.
I guess when craft service food is used up, they just grab some cereal. So much for all that talk of organic home cooking.

BostonBean said...

At the filming, they were already committed to the new house. So I'm sure they didn't want the old house to be sold (if it hadn't been at the time) with a damaged stove. They had to replace it immediately.
Either someone had already signed on their house, including the appliances, or it would be shown to potential buyers.
Most people DO leave the kitchen appliances.Especially when you are moving to a million dollar home which probably has appliances....or knowing them, they probably ordered all new. Hmmmm...I'm thinking all stainless in the kitchen.
You know they will never show the expanse of the new home. They will probably film the front entrance, which doesn't look that grand...and have occasional shots of the kids, without too much background showing.
Kate looks like the lying life she lives is taking a toll on her.

It won't take long for her to realize it's a priviliege to have her own room. Like an earlier commenter said, the older girls should get their own room and Alexis should learn not to bother her sisters.

Kate actually said her kids deserved this new house. No child DESERVES a mansion. A child deserves to be loved, clothed, fed, educated and to receive medical care. I know many large families who survived without a mansion. Most of the children shared beds as well as bedrooms. And they all are doing fine.
It's great that these kids will have a nice house, I suppose, but they don't DESERVE it.
Once again, a horrible sense of priority in that house.

She is totally horrible to Jon (even though he is an ass), and she has no time for the kids at all. It is all about appearance to her. She has to have a nice house, nice clothes, nice hair (sorry, had to throw that in, hehe) and nice STUFF. Jon is out in the back playing with his kids. The booger with the play doh was great! I love that kind of play with kids. She is a sad excuse for a mother. Her demeanor on the chair is a joke. She has this totally holier than thou attitude anymore and she really shows that she is so above giving interviews. Her snotty looks, her snotty comments. She is just a jerk, plain and simple. What a terrible and non-convincing one might add, attempt on the part of TLC/Figure 8 production in their staging and editting process of this so called day in the life of 'reality tv' show. The episode was severely lacking in its continuity and the voice over script reading completely non believable ie, 'ON this day'. There is Kate sporting her much shorter and darker hair in the kitchen and her hot mess of a lopsided 20/60 business in the back and party in the front mullet
on the confessional couch. The 'surprise' announcement to the viewers and children that they are moving, when it only stands to reason that the children (and viewers) would have/should have been previously aware of the fact. Considering it was back in July '07they packed up and drove hundreds of miles to look at several houses in various states on the way to their 'working vacation in NC. Not to mention, the fact that the children play such a pivotal role in J & K's financial future by collectively agreeing to the 'family business' vs mommy and daddy going off to work and being in day care all day. Kate's droaning on about her soup making was beyond boring. It's soup! Get over yourself! It seems as if the J & K reality tv show has jumped shark and TLC/Figure 8 Production has resorted to digging through piles of never before seen cutting room floor footage to re-create a new season of a 'day in the life of' the Gosselin family.
Reality tv, you jest, not staged yea right.

And the little girl who had soup all over herself and who smiled at Kate (I still can't tell the girls apart) was the cutest thing ever. I also liked how Kate joked with the guy installing her stove. But I didn't enjoy the interview segments with them. They don't have a lot to talk about and looked like they'd rather be sleeping. I think they'd probably both admit that, too.

I don't think Kate and Jon are going to talk much about the new house. I specifically don't think they're going to address who paid for it, how much it was, etc. And, really, I don't think they owe the viewers any explanations on that either.

All in all, I smiled a lot when watching the show and feel like it was back to the old format, focusing on the kids and everyday things. My guess is they're going to not include a lot of details of the move in the upcoming episodes and will then start winding down the series. I'm not sure why I feel that way as I've read there are no plans to wrap things up. But as the kids get older, I'm not sure the interest will be there amongst viewers.

hi
I watched a little bit last nite, it seemed that Kate was really tired, bored or drugged. she could hardly sit up or even talk-which is not like Kate.
sooooo boring.
