All Smiles Recap

What’s more exciting than watching other people’s kids at the dentist? Why, watching them a second time of course! Will someone cry? Will Kate be rude to the office staff? Will it be incredibly obvious that this episode was taped ages ago and we’re seeing it now to hide the new house? Let's find out!

We start with Kate telling us that this checkup is six months later from the last time we saw the kids at the dentist. You know, back in October of 2007. I instantly give her the crazy squinty eye ‘cuz that’s not looking right to me at all. But I’ll play along. Kate gets the kids out of the van and prances into the dentist office. She’s dressed in normal mom running errands wear, peep toe pumps, designer jeans, a dress shirt, a sweater vest, full makeup and jewelry, hair don’t, and the yellow coat that she wears in the new promos. Hmmm.... the timing.... something’s wrong here.

After threatening the kids a bit for making too much noise and roughly ripping off Aaden’s coat, we jump to a couch interview. And guess who’s there? Go on, you know the answer. That’s right! Hannah’s there. “This was a severe case of missing mommy. This was a hysterical case of missing mommy. And so the only solution to getting this interview done was to bring the problem.” Kate quickly gets lovey and says Hannah’s not a problem, cuddles her a bit, and she and Jon talk about Hannah’s nicknames. Gee Kate, why are your kids having severe cases of missing you? You don’t work and you stay home with them, right? RIGHT? Yeah, we know better. Hey, wait a second. Doesn’t Kate always say these interviews are done at night after the kids are in bed? I guess some unseen nanny is watching the other seven kids while they sleep. I bet they miss mommy too. But they aren’t Hannah.

Back to the dentist office. Between shots of the kids playing we get shots of Alexis hysterically screaming for her blankie at the last visit. You know, the one that happened six months ago. This must be new math. The camera guy asks about Leah about brushing teeth and she says Daddy does them and then corrects herself and says Mommy. Guess Jon got a morning off, he deserves it. Kate says that the kids aren’t allowed to brush their teeth themselves, they have to do it for them. Jon raises his hand and tries to say he does it, but he gets talked over. As we see footage of Kate scrubbing away at poor kids mouths like she’s Lady Macbeth, she says it took her a long time to figure out “logistically” the toothbrushes. She finally figured out to keep a set upstairs and a set downstairs in the kitchen. Isn’t there a bathroom off that kitchen? The bigger question is, why was this a logistical problem? No sherpa to guide them up the stairs to find the other bathroom? This seems like common sense to me. Kate moves on to criticizing Mady’s teeth while Hannah is all cuddled in her lap, having her hair stroked. Nice.

Kate’s “reading” books to Leah in the waiting room, but this mostly consists of flipping thru the pages at warp speed. Then Kate proves that she uses the internet feature on that iPhone of hers and let’s us know that the solar system book she’s reading isn’t correct. Pluto is still listed as a planet. She takes the opportunity to let the nice dentist providing free dental care to eight children know that her books are out dated. The kids all move back to the chairs and get to pick toothbrushes with their favorite cartoon characters.

There’s much moving around of kids while they get situated. We see lots of footage of the kids from the last visit, you know the one from six months ago, and boy have those kids grown! Kate says that the dentist wanted to know which kids would be jittery, and “of course Lex is on that list.” Hannah lounges and gets petted hearing another one of her sisters put down. Kate laments that the kids didn’t need her all that much this time, they’re four and a half already. Hey, wait a minute! This math isn’t working at all!

Back from break we are again told this was their six month checkup. Everybody drink! The kids get to pick their toothpaste flavor and there’s like 20 rattled off to them. Another slam at the dentist for having too many options. I would be afraid to lose free dentistry for eight kids, but hey, that’s me. Seems a mite excessive and daunting for little kids, but they all pick their favorite. The kids are looking adorable with sunglasses on to keep the light out of their eyes and getting to press the buttons on the chair. Cut to Hannah in the interview chair while Kate’s asking her about the dentist. Hannah give a few answers and Jon tries to say something. This earns him a “SHHH.” Kate asks another question and Hannah doesn’t remember what flavor toothpaste she picked. This is when I notice that Jon’s hair plugs finally look like they are growing in. Either that or he’s using spray on hair.

Half of the kids are now done and Hannah marches over to show Kate her teeth. Kate always asks for a report. She learns that Hannah had a little tarter build up behind her bottom teeth. Kate makes a well of course gesture with her hands and says “Yeah, Jon.” The nice dentist says just little bit, she must not know that Jon can’t do anything right, and says “over all, tell him good job”. Now it’s the next three kids turns, Lex is in this group. Kate brings up the melt down of the last trip up again, Hannah’s hearing all sorts of things tonight. More cuteness in the office. The kids were all super well behaved at this appointment. Joel likes the scented dental gloves, but he’d rather have mango scented. Jon says he thinks Joel wants to go back to Hawaii. You know, from that trip that mathematically hasn’t happened yet. Jon looks bored out of his skull. I don’t know why, who doesn’t enjoy watching kids at the dentist? The kids are all herded out of the office as we hear the next three dental reports. Jon missed a few molars and Kate yells to the office staff “Can you tell the same people brush their teeth?” A different person says those are tough areas, MOM, to try to make it better for Jon. Kate packs the kids up and out the door while we hear about her asking for reports so “we” can do better. The little kids head off to preschool and one says they are hot. Kate snidely says “that’s amazing since it’s winter” and the child quickly says cold. Poor kid. I finally give up on figuring out this time line. I’m pretty sure she’s lying.

Now it’s the twins turn. They are at the orthodontist to see if they need braces. Or, as Kate calls them, the “momentous orthodontist appointments”. Kate knew there would be issues with Mady and figured Cara would be all right. Cara and Mady argue who has to go first. The hygienist picks Mady, but Mady refuses. Kate tells Cara to go since she’s the oldest. Cara says that Kate always does that and Mady says that she’s been acting like the oldest lately. Finally the hygienist has had enough and says one will go first for the pictures and last for the doctor. Smart woman, maybe someone should tell Kate about this technique. Cara and Mady are in all sorts of areas for pictures and x-rays. The producers then pick a humiliating shot of Mady with a plastic contraption in her mouth to hold her lips back so that all her teeth are exposed for pictures. I feel awful for the child. Once, when I was at the orthodontist, I had to sit with a similar device in my mouth for about 10 minutes. They needed me to change rooms. The hygienist brought in a new patient while she was telling me to go next door and of course it was a boy from my school. I was humiliated and that was only one kid I knew seeing me. Now millions have seen Mady. I can’t even imagine going to school tomorrow after this.

X-rays are over and it’s time to learn what needs to be done. Kate says “ I knew Mady would need, like, some major assistance of some sort. Major. Ohhhh major. Major, major.” Hannah’s curled up in Jon’s lap now while Mady is being talked about yet again. The girls' X-rays are shown for the world to see. Kate says “I was quite sure they were gonna tell me that Mady needed some major intervention” and makes that fluttery hand gesture she usually reserves to describe the “icky” boys. Jon finally perks up and makes a chain saw noise and movement as Kate giggles. She makes tooth pulling gestures and noises. Hannah sits and giggles while they mock Mady’s dental issues.

Jon and Kate obviously don’t respect their children’s privacy, but I’m going to. We don’t need specifics. Kate sees Mady’s x-rays and clutches her chest and makes a face. Cara and Mady’s brushing habits are discussed, Cara does better than Mady. Old footage of Mady’s Special Day where Kate yells about Mady’s teeth is shown. At the beginning of this episode Kate was proud that they keep the tups’ teeth much cleaner than they did the twins. I wonder if this has anything to do with why Mady isn’t a good brusher yet. Children do learn by example. More Mady criticism for Hannah to hear.

As we get a tour of the office, the coordinator tells the girls that when they get their braces off, they will be sang to. The tour continues and the orthodontist comes in. Poor Mady says she doesn’t like her teeth. Kate “had” to laugh at the length of time it took for Mady’s pictures to be looked at. Since I’m not going to discuss their medical issues in depth, I’ll state what will be obvious since we’ll see the results. Mady will be getting braces and Cara won’t. Jon laments that Mady used to have a beautiful smile until her teeth stated falling out and Kate says she will again. Are they saying that right now she doesn’t? Parents really wouldn’t do that, right? Hannah’s still there hearing all of this. Kate gets all zen on us and tells us that she’ll deal with the food issues, associated with braces, when they come up, she only takes on today’s problems. The space time continuum that ate about 8 months also swallowed the whole house except for the basement corner. We never saw one new shot. Or maybe they had something to hide. Nah, they’d never do that.

Good recap! SO... no Beth in this episode?? The last dental visit episode involved Beth's house being used as the "waiting room" for the tups until it was their turn.

This woman is really starting to grind my last nerve. Did anyone notice how she shut Jon up when he dared interupt Hannah on the couch?

I really hope that Jon grows a pair, leaves her sorry ass and takes the kids with him, swicthes off the camera and gives these kids some sort of normal life.

Kate is a narcissistic mother who smiled like the Grinch every time she commented about Madys' teeth.

I just hate that Mady who didn't ask to be filmed has all her bad days on TV because of her idiot parents. Hope the kids at her school don't see this epi.

Poor kid...

More specifically Mady was used in last nights show as a pawn in her parent's media game.

Anything for the almighty dollar!

My husband walked in while I was watching last night and asked how I could POSSIBLY want to watch a show about taking a bunch of kids to the dentist (since we have 4 of our own and it seems I visit the dentist's office frequently.) I said that at least I can relate to taking a bunch of little kids to the dentist, whereas I CANNOT relate to being flown to fancy resorts and getting special treatment from said resorts. As boring as it was to watch, I'd rather see mundane, daily tasks than greedy opulence. Oh, I forgot, they already moved -- I'm sure I'll be seeing plenty of greedy opulence in future episodes.

Very witty recap! While I found reading it entertaining, the show is just too sad to watch anymore. I don't even know how to put it into words. KON are are so transparent in their attempt to evade the truth in regard to their new house, their financial situation, etc., but even worse, they are blatantly putting their bad parenting choices on display every week at the expense of their children and their feelings. From Hannie getting to sit-in on all of the sibling-bashing, to poor Mady having her teeth problems put out there for all to see (literally), these people have absolutely no shame. It amazes me still that these people have so many supporters and people who glorify them for being "super-parents".

Lulu said...

Great recap. I was also disgusted by all the Mady-bashing.
If the children really DO watch the Show (like Kate claims it's their favorite thing to watch) then Hannah isn't the only child listening to this. Sick.

After reading the fabulous recap, i had to go and rewatch a few scenes on youtube.
Jon got very quiet after Kate SSHHHUSHED him. She would say something to him and as soon as he spoke a word, she kept talking. If you watch closely at his body language, facial expressions etc, you can just feel in your bones what a monster he is dealing with.
I missed the part about the mango flavor the first time. Nice-so next time they go to the dentist, they will have that flavor, Kate says.
I shouldve kept my daughters rock 'em sock 'em game, glued a picture of Kate on one of the figurines, so i could smack Kate's smug ass around!

I flipped by during comercials for another show (24--go Jack Bower!)--in time to see dear beloved chosen Hannie on the interview couch. Sigh...same old, same old, just more obvious.
According to the recap, Jon got "shushed" for interupting Hannah--he should know better by now. In a previous episode, Jon tells Hannah to be quiet and Kate says, "YOU be quiet, Jon."
In another episode when they went back to the condo they lived in after the tups were born, Jon scolds Hannah to keep her screeching down because "other people live here"-- Hannah promptly runs to Kate and Kate admonishes Jon to "say it nicely" while cuddling poor Hannah.

Sheesh. Kate is setting herself up for problems later, IMO. If she knows and recognizes that she favors Hannah or "bonded" with her first, why doesn't Kate correct the situation? Just saying (supposedly in "the book") that you bonded first with one child does not excuse or condone favoritism. Showing favortism is a very selfish way to parent, IMO.
I couldn't help but wonder if Joel was the child who was missing his parents (Daddy), would he be permitted to sit on the couch and snuggle with Jon??? Or, more likely, would he be banished to time out or his room and told "I better not hear you breathe"-- "you MAY NOT cry for Daddy!"

I turned the channel after 5 minutes.

Did anyone notice that Jon seemed very sleepy during couch interview? What's up with that?

Kate is a slob. Prancing around in her coordinated outfits and making disparaging comments about some of her kids. Sheesh.

Kate says that she only takes on today's problem's and yet we see posted notes all over her (old) house of what needs to be tackeled next.

Kate makes it a point to say that one day Mady's smile will be nice someday. Oh she really gets on my last nerve also. How many of us have children who take that school picture and out child has messed up hair and that awakward smile and yet we gleam with pride and joy and frame the pic and send a 8x10 to grandma and grandpa? But Kate cant do this because she thinks that her childs smile sucks and there is not a grandparent in site.

Great recap fostersmom!

It is just so unfair to pick on Maddy's mouth. If she can't or won't take proper care of her teeth, it is the parent's responsibility to make sure the job gets done, even if they have to brush her teeth themselves! Yea, it is one more job to add on the "horrendously" long list, but that is what good parents do! Yea, her list is 4 times longer than mine, but no one held Kate down and forced fertility drugs into her mouth!

Quack said...

Kate is plain ol' trailer trash. She JUST thinks she is all that. Sorry I know it is rude to comment like that and seems juvenile but seriously. She didn't EARN her keep, she literally had a litter of kids and thinks the world owes her.

If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, well, you get my point!

FREE MADY said...

The beloved Hannie perched atop her throne on her mother's lap. Big Shocker! So Hannah was the only one who would have liked to be with her parents rather than sleeping? Theres no chance in hell that she would let Alexis or Joel or any of the other tups do that, but the favorite kid? whatever her little heart desires.

FREE MADY said...

Oh, and i was wondering? In the old house when they made Alexis sleep in the basement, how did they do their interviews down there when the kids were sleeping? Wouldn't they wake up lexi? or did they just not care?

Did anyone notice that Jon said maybe three words the entire couch interview, of course until the classic moment when they both made fun of poor Mady's teeth. And, what I couldn't tell was whether Jon was wearing his wedding band last night...

On another note, I was watching the show when my mom walked in. It was the scene when the Doctor is talking to Cara and Mady about their orthodontic future, and my mom said, never having seen the show ever before, "you know the show is really about her!" Cracked me up, she had Kate labeled in only two mintues.

Jon has looked sleepy during the couch interviews for the last year, if not more.

He knows if he says too much or says the wrong thing, Kate will snap at him. So rather than try talking, he's day dreaming about being on the golf course or playing with his kids (2 things he enjoys doing).

Beth is too much of a Christian and has too much class to make the details public. The Gosselins are not nice people.

But I don't think all of the interviews are done after the kids go to sleep. There have been episodes, where you can hear the kids playing upstairs during the interview.

Guess what Jon Boy?
Didn't work!

That shows how sick their humor is. So Jon Boy if your reading this tucked away in your closet we caught on very early that you and that bitch you married were trying to goad us and it didn't work.
Kate and Jon abuse their kids and the fact that the state they live in allows it doesn't say much for Pennsylvania.

When they were making fun of Mady it broke my heart. If my parents said things like that about me NOW (and I'm 26!) I would cry. If I heard my parents talking about my teeth like that when I was 8, I think I would have locked my self in my room for a week bawling.

Some of the sheeple are already defending that part of the show by saying it was just good natured poking fun, and that Mady would be able to handle. Are they BLIND?? Or just mean people?

Great Recap, again!! Awesome job. These are just so much better than the show itself.

One thing about the show last night (not just one thing there were a lot about the the show last night...) that irked me was when Kate was going on and on about when she had braces (free from Jon's father) around the time she was preggers with the tups. She just went on and on about it. Even back then she on her freebie train.

Another thing, Kate was so danged nasty to the staff at the dental office. The comments about the book being outdated were so out of line. And the way she attacked the dentist about the book. Was this woman raised by wolves? She is getting free dental care from this office and she takes every opportunity to insult them (the book is outdated, there's too many choices for toothpaste blah, blah, blah).

And the comment about the dental chairs "those are there for us." Yes Kate, the whole universe revolves around you and Hannah.

Kate just needs to stay out of the public because clearly she has no social skills and does not play well with others.

Kate is social sandpaper. She tries way too hard to be liked and to focus all attention on herself. I think that's the reason Hannie (Muffy?) is the chosen child. She pays Kate attention. All the others seem to favor Jon or the "family friend/stranger" of the week by choice.

On a side note, my teeth as a child were horrible. I had to wear headgear and braces for 3 years. I also had TWO sets of wisdom teeth and two oral surgeries to remove them. If I heard my mother speaking about me the way Kate spoke about Mady (and my mom can be pretty nasty), I would have been mortified. Whatever happened to parents loving their children unconditionally? Kate is WAY too focuse on outward appearances.

IRATEb/cofKate said...

Kate's favoritism is disgusting. I just don't see how one child can be up on that pedestal while the rest are in bed probably crying. She really is heartless. And Muffy is so aware of the fact that she is the favorite.

Prediction: Mady will grow up to write a book about the embarrassment of her childhood, do some interviews with 20/20 to let us know that she is still suffering from the poor decisions her parents made but is using her childhood as a way to spread awareness of exploitation by speaking around the world. When she is not busy doing that, she is relaxing in privacy with her smile that was always beautiful.

To answer a question asked in an earlier comment- was Kate raised by wolves?
No. Wolves treat their pack better.

Kate is an AWFUL mother. I don't care that the kids get material perks, they are emotionally neglected and some are emotionally abused.
Kate should never have had so many children, in fact I don't think she should have had ANY.

It is beyond reprehensible to openly mock your child's dental issues. She will internalize that and she is not the only one of the Gosselin children who has been set up for a lifetime of self esteem, personality, and appearance issues.

What will Jon and Kate do when they are dealing with eating disorders, anxiety disorders, and severe depression issues for eight children? Will they get free therapy too?

My heart breaks for Mady. She's just a little girl. She acts like a brat because the family has turned her into one.

It was in such poor taste to show footage of her and Cara at the orthodontist.

I cannot believe these "parents" do not stand up for and protect their children. They are sickening people.

Then I started regularly reading this website. The wool has been lifted from my eyes!!!! Its amazing how selfish Kate and Jon both are!! It's not about their kids at all, the kids are actually a nusance!! Since having my baby girl I could not even imagine being like that!!! I watched the episode when Kate hired a housekeeper and complained about giving the tups breathing treatments, not because the treatments would be beneficial to their health but because it took an hour out of HER time!!! Its absolutely horrible to watch. The only time the kids are any convience to them is when they are having another freebie handed to them!

You're right about that. Wolves do treat their pack better and don't hold out their paws for freebies. LOL

And you are also right about Kate being a terrible mother. Sadly, I just hope her terrible mothering will not rub off on the kids when they have children. I mean they can either raise their children the way they were raised (raised by a cold and uncaring, greedy mother) or they will do the opposite and be warm and loving parents. I hope that will be the case.

I want to preface my comments with -- I'm not a fan of the KON --
but I think people are being a little unfair to Kate. I think by her comments about the mango toothpaste she was just referring to the excessive number of flavor options, as in; I'm sure they'll have mango eventually. (Doesn't flavored toothpaste encourage kids to swallow/eat it?) Her other comments about "8 chairs just for us", etc., are just her weak attempt at humor. There are edited scenes I don't give much thought to such as when Kate is shown yelling at one of the boys and taking a stuffed animal from him because we don't know what preceeded that event. It didn't appear to me that Kate snatched it from him, but I don't scrutinize the show that closely. Kate certainly has some major issues; questionable parenting, mistreating her husband, and on and on, but nitpicking every little thing she says, does, doesn't do, that's BORING.

As far as the flavor of mango, i believe she thinks since her son mentioned it and it wasnt available, that it would be next time as they seem to get everything they wish for.

I didn't watch this episode, but can't for the life of me understand why getting braces has to be such a big, traumatic event. I had braces from the end of 8th grade until about half through my senior year on high school. Yeah, you could say I needed "major, I mean MAJOR help." But so what? I actually enjoyed having them because 1)it was somewhat of a right of passage-everyone at school had them & 2)I knew I would have a great smile when it was all over. I didn't even find what little bit of discomfort I experienced to be bad at all. I suppose though that if I was only 8, like Mady, when I was dragged to the orthodontist it would have been a bigger deal. I could have gotten mind earlier, but I wasn't ready & my parents knew I wouldn't take care of them (avoiding certain foods, etc) until it was my decision & I was tired of having the crooked teeth. I think Kate just doesn't want her kids to be "imperfect" (remember her being upset over Aaden needing glasses?), which is so sad. If she's freaking out this much about a child needing braces, I can't imagine what she would have been like if the tups had ended up having complications.

Karin said...

I wonder at what point Kate will stop being lazy enough to teach the tups to brush their own teeth. I guess if Jon does it there is no incentive. You know, it makes more sense that if one person isn't responsible for eight set of teeth, the job might get done better. I imagine that by the third child, he's pretty much over it. My four and a half year old has been brushing his own teeth for a couple of months now. And he does a great job (with some supervision, but not much) But we took the time to teach.
And is it any indication of how uninteresting this show is when I can't even picture which one is Hannah without watching the show? After watching for as long as I have, I still can't even tell which boy is which.

It seems that this appointment is a year after their first appointment. I wonder if they go every 6 months & that is why Kate said, "It's been 6 months since our last appointment"?
My son (who is 4) goes every 6 months - the dentist also wouldn't see him until he was 3.
I used to enjoy watching the early episodes of this show - lately though I can not stand her attitude. You know, I sometimes yell at my husband and son...sometimes I have just had enough. I also hug them all the time, give them tons of kisses & tell them I love them several times a day. Kate is obviously riding high on her sense of entitlement.
One of these days she will fall off & boy will it hurt.

Excellent recap, Fostermom!! You made a very boring and disturbing episode more interesting. Ok, even the most loyal of the sheeple have to be over this KON job! Last night's epi was it for me. There is absolutely nothing of value in watching this dysfunctional family destroy innocent kids. Kate, who I am sure thought she would score points going to the dentist ALONE with SO MANY KIDS, was dressed like a wanna-be career woman. Well, except for the ROOSTER on her head. WTF is up with that hair? She looks ridiculous. Did anyone notice that witchy Kate just kept repeating herself in the interview shots? How much can be said about a dental visit? I agree, the last visit to the dentist was MUCH longer than 6 mos ago. I couldn't even watch the whole epi. My 13 year old daughter said she feels so sorry for Mady, the way her parents "trash her". This has to end now. Hannah in on the interview was the kicker for me. I have 4 kids and I never play favorite to one. Think what the other 7 siblings thought when "Muffy" got to go with KON to the couch. I'm glad that Beth is out of the mess with them. I just keep thinking, what goes around, comes around. I really believe it would be ideal if Jon(I am no fan of his, but I think he loves his kids)could leave that hag's butt, take any money that they may have left after their 15 mins of fame ends and go off to live with the kids. Katie-Irene could send him a monthly check if she becomes the next Martha Stewart. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL! That woman is a beast, the kids are being held back emotionally by her and she needs to be stopped. How are the sheeple in such awe of her? Like another poster above, she is nothing but trash. I'm done, but I will read this blog for the updates. Anyone who has inside knowledge about these horrible parents PLEASE contact the person in the other post who is researching them. Maybe his/her article will open the eyes of those who have sipped the KON Kool aid!!! Ok, I'm done :)

Great job ! The recaps are the best part of my Tuesday mornings =)

My .02:

1) I also couldn't believe how FAST Kate was turning those darn pages in that horrendously outdated book.

2) This appointment was 6 months after the last ? Again, KON and TLC think we are as brain-dead as the sheeple.

3)Why oh why did they have to show Mady with that plastic contraption in her mouth? My heart breaks for her.

4) Nobody else has mentioned this, but WHY DON'T KON TEACH THEIR CHILDREN HOW TO SIT PROPERLY , especially in front of a camera for all of the world to see? The Hannah stroking was distracting and nauseating enough to watch, but her laying on Jon with her legs wide open is just inappropriate. It's the same thing as Mady giving crotch shots when she was rolling around on the floor in the basement.

5) Kate shushing Jon - what a biatch.

I could go on and on, but the recap captured my sentiments already !

Wendy Bird said...

Thanks for the recap, fostersmom.

I can't believe how Mady was talked about by her parents, especially in front of Hannah. Hang in there Mady, there may finally be help coming in the form of a truthful article about how your parents have exploited you and your siblings for their own wants.

I felt that Kate's and Jon's body language on the couch toward each other said it all...VERY LOUDLY!

The last two episodes were really snooze-fests overall. I literally fell asleep during the organically organic soup-making episode. I highly recommend watching it to anyone who suffers from insomnia.

This was the first episode of Kon that I've watched in quite awhile. Nothing has really changed (going to the dentist again...yawn), but I was amused by her outfit.

What mom of 8 wears designer jeans, high heels, dressy shirt and vest to go to the dentist?! That's probably a $500 outfit, and I'm sure it was a freebie. It didn't look like her usual outfit of tee-shirt and sweatpants. Very odd.

While I think its reasonable for 4 year olds to brush their own teeth and have them checked (and often re-done) by a parent when you have 6 four year olds I think its unreasonable to expect Kate to do that. It would take twice as long as it takes now and for all the people that are going to say she has the time, or it will only take a few minutes more than just doing it for them; there are SIX everything takes longer. Jon and Kate are making decisions how they see fit, it doesn't matter if the public agrees or not.

Oh REALLY????? Have I got news for you... They make decisions on how much money they need that week, NOT by what is in the best interest of EACH child. You sure do come on this board spouting out praises for two people who don't know one thing about raising children. Would YOU put your children on national television in their skivvies or nothing at all? Would you sell out to the highest bidder just so you could enjoy a luxurious lifestyle? It isn't about trying to take care of these children anymore, it is about GREED. Plain and simple.

It doesn't mean that because Cara was pulled out of your womb first that she has to do everything first because she was the oldest, doesn't mean that Hannah was the tup you held first means she's your favorite. I saw some snippet a while back (when I had some questions and started nosing around the net) on Youtube....something about "Aaden's glasses." It's not some cutesy thing where Aaden is looking for his glasses but rather Kate talking about Aaden's eyesight. It struck me then, her attitude. it seemed like she really regretted having one of the tups needing glasses. He wasn't perfect and it seemed like it really bothered her. I remember thinking, "wt...?" oh heck, here's the link (sorry, can only cut and paste, not that savvy)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIA2fLOIwS4

Yes, I watched it again and where as she does say "there are many things that are worse..." she goes on to blather about how he's not perfectly perfect like they had wished. And then, mind you I have worn glasses since 12 months of age, she babbles on about how concerned she is about his eyesight because he has astigmatism. Heavens, what a pity fest! And she's shocked that he actually wants to wear the glasses, but attributes it to him liking to wear hats and such. Um, clue, he likes to be able to see. I guess, and I really am trying to be linear, coherent and not ramble, I viewed this and my immediate reaction was "wow, she couldn't handle it if there were any other complications with those kids."

You might think it will be Hannie wiping porridge from your whiskery chin, but don't be so sure. The funny thing is I've seen the favored child neglect the parent worse than all the others combined, so don't be so sure she will be pleased about how she was treated and take care of you in your old age.

I am truly heartbroken for Mady, Kate essentially has designated her as the ugly duckling child in front of millions.

And the Hannah favoritism repulses me when I see it. I too remember the episodes in which Joel Aeden and maybe Colin are crying for their Daddy. Joel is sent to the corner, Aeden is banished to the corner, then to his bed when he cannot calm down. And I remember Joel being told he is not even allowed to breathe.

Such a sad situation for these dear sweet children. I even feel for Hannah as the most favored one. Her siblings will pay her back big time in life.

How sad that Jon so lacks self-respect that he would allow himself to be treated that way. Being such a wimp sets a bad example for his sons.

Jon seems to have made a deal with the devil. I wonder if he’ll ever grow up, get past his slacker attitude and set some boundaries. How hard would it be to say “Never do that again Kate, it’s rude and disrespectful.”?

Maybe someone who watches the show can answer this question: Does there seem to be anyone in the lives of these children who do not make money off them?

Within the first 5 minutes I was already rolling my eyes and yelling at the TV. Cara and Mady are in private school. I wonder if that helps to take the edge off the teasing somewhat as maybe the classes are smaller so the teachers are more involved with each child and can address teasing. Does this make any sense? I know teasing occurs in places (playground, schoolgrounds, etc.) where often a teacher or supervising adult cannot be everywhere at all times. I just hope poor Mady is not suffering horribly because of the teasing. Kids can be so brutal and vicious. Do you think the twins' teachers are taking extra care to watch out for these girls given their unfortunate notoriety as a result of their parents pimping them out?

Um, you are thinking like KATE right now, by asking society to hold the responsiblity of protecting the children when it is obviously the parents' responsiblity to protect their own kids (like how Kate demanded that society take care of her babies because "fertility drugs are promoted by society"). This means that Jon and Kate should first REMOVE their children from the television screen since it's the problem. You're twisting it all around by suggesting that someone else should protect the kids instead.

Thanks, fostersmom for the hilarious recap!

There were DEFINITELY some continuity errors in this one. The tups were only 2 years old in that first dentist visit. So if they do get checkups every 6 months, they have had several visits between then and now. Plenty of time to acclimate, so I'm not surprised all the kids were well-behaved.

Like everyone else, I feel terrible for Mady being exposed like that. Having braces wasn't fun and it doesn't help that Kate kept dismissing Mady's concerns. I had braces 18 years ago and I vividly remember everything. For someone who just had braces recently (Kate), she could have made this a bonding experience with her daughter, but instead she chose to criticize and make fun of her misfortune for millions of viewers to see. When she and Jon were making those chainsaw/jackhammer motions, I seriously wanted to slap them both across the face. I really hope Mady was in on that joke. If not, they are sick, SICK people.

Some of the sheeple are already defending that part of the show by saying it was just good natured poking fun, and that Mady would be able to handle. Are they BLIND?? Or just mean people?

They are BLIND and MEAN IMO..
Some that follow J/K and defend their behavior must think that treating children this way is ok. Maybe they treat their family members just like Kate and now have all of Kate's excuses for it. Sick!
And then there are those who just blindly follow anyone calling themselves Christian because "they don't judge, but love." As if that earns them brownie points with God. NOT!!!
Real love isn't afraid to tell the truth or face the truth. God's love confronts wrong doing, not advocates it and not because God is mean or judgemental or those who stand for truth are mean or judgemental but because change can only come about if wrong doing(lies, greed, hatefulness, entitlement, the list goes on..) is confronted and challenged.
I've seen more love shown for these children on this board by posters than Kate has in her small finger for her own children.

I think you have totally overreacted to the original comment, or at least misconstrued it. I took it to just mean that the person was hoping there was at least SOMEONE in these girls lives (their teachers) who are looking out for them. IMO, there is nothing wrong with that. As a teacher, I know that is part of my job. I'm responsible for every child that walks through my door for those 6 hours a day and it is my responsibility to ensure that they feel safe, loved, and have a happy learning environment--that includes doling out consequences when children tease or are disrespectful to each other.

I've actually also thought this about the girls many times--that I hope Mady and Cara's teachers give them a safe place to be away from all of this publicity that is their home life.

I had teeth just like Mady's when I was a kid and I got braces and now I have beautiful teeth. It happens to a lot of kids and it isn't horrendously horrendous for the parents (especially if the orthodonture is free, I would think).

I would have been so upset if my parents had made fun of my teeth being crooked because, you know, Mady is aware of it anyway as I was aware of it. She doesn't need and I didn't need someone I trusted to tell me how bad I look and how my sister has perfect teeth. Let Mady have a shred of dignity, let her have a shred of self-respect.

I think Kate is very rough with the boys, physically rough, yanking off their coats and just the general way she treats them when she gives them any attention at all. I believe she does think they are inferior because they're boys just as she believes Jon is her inferior.

Jon may believe he has found the gravy train of his life, but I also hope someone lets him know that he has become the laughing stock of men all over the country. No one has any respect for him. He will never be able to hold his head up for the rest of his life. Money will never be able to buy class, Jon. I beg him to protect his children and especially his boys if he is to ever regain any humanity or masculinity. I have lost hope for Katie Irene as it is clear that SHE is the only thing important to her. She is a monster.

They talked about going to preschool, which we've already seen, so I thought she was trying to tell us they're backtracking and using old footage (I guess because of the move -- they won't be able to use it later). Interesting to hear other perspectives.

As for the outfit she wore... that is exactly how 99% of the sahms dress where I live (not all that far from Harrisburg, PA). They look like the afters on What Not To Wear. I didn't even blink when I saw her dressed like that. (And yeah, there seems to be some secret rooster society -- I see that haircut all over the place!) So I guess normal is relative.

Now, before some of you go off or call me a sheeple, I'm not defending the woman. I hope one day Jon lays into her and the producers put THAT out there for us to see. I'm just saying that SOME of the things here didn't come off to me the way they're described.

"Jon and Kate are making decisions how they see fit, it doesn't matter if the public agrees or not."

You're right, but since Kon has put their lives on TV, the public can and will express their opinions about what they're doing. And the decisions "they see fit", such as marketing their children for the family's income, are not in the best interests of their children, but certainly in Kon's best interests.

i personally don't think it's a big deal if they talk about mady's braces and teeth problems. what about other girls her age that might watch the show and see that a girl on tv are getting braces just like them? i know that sounds like a kate comment, but seriously, there are a lot of elementary school kids that watch the show. also, i had braces at her age and then again until senior year of high school. i had various oral surgeries including having teeth pulled which resulted in a few months of being 16 with missing teeth. it's really not that traumatizing, braces are such a common thing now-a-days i think it's more traumatizing to NOT have them and have crooked ugly teeth.

however, i draw the line at dentist/ortho appointments. mostly because i could imagine the "first trip to the OBGYN" episode.

While I agree it's up to the parents to make decisions that work for their family what you say here contradicts what Kate herself has said numerous times. She has said she wants the sextuplets to be treated as they would had they been born individually, not as a set. So if that's the case she should treat each child as such and not "plead eight" as she has repeatedly. She & Jon made the choice to have all eight, therefore they should also make the choice to treat each one with the care they deserve regardless of how long it takes. It takes much much longer to correct something preventable than it does to keep it from happening in the first place.

And there's no reason they couldn't allow the tups to brush their own teeth first, then have Jon finish up. Same with the twins. If they're not getting it done effectively it would make sense to have someone double-check until they do learn how to care for their teeth properly. They're still young enough for intervention so it bugged me that Kate has effectively written them off.

Those two continously make decisions that benefit them, not their children. You'd think when it comes to the children's health they'd put the kids first but then we get this episode reminding us that no, eight kids are too much work. I'm still steamed about that one episode where Kate ignored Alexis's (or was it Leah's?) ear ache for 3 weeks.

I am one of those people who have been reading all the comments and not commenting until now. I used to enjoy this show. When things started going bad I kept thinking am I the only one who thinks these children are being abused and then I was glad to find your site. I have not watched for a few weeks. This week I happened by when they had the device in Mady's mouth. I can't believe that any parent would let this be broadcast. I was also impressed at how grown up (and unhappy) the twins looked. Last night TLC had on the episode where Kate had the tummy tuck. On that episode she said she never wanted to miss a week of the children's life again. How everything has changed. She seemed so grateful for everything and was so happy to see all the children when she returned. I feel so bad for the non-favorites that they will grow up knowing (and knowing everyone else knows) how unequally they were treated. As a Pennsylvania resident I do feel that something should be done legally to get this couple off the free ride and working like the rest of us. I hope your site can help this happen.

Someone up-thread mentioned that teasing may be less severe for Mady and Cara since they attend private school. As someone who has attended both private and public schools, I respectfully disagree. Maybe this isn't true of all private schools, but at the one I attended, teasing was actually quite a bit worse (though in some cases, more subtle - but still horrible). I think this is a result of the smaller class sizes which leads to an even worse clique mentality than is found at public schools (I know not all private schools have smaller classes, but it is common). Also, because class sizes are small, you're stuck with the same group of kids and its harder to avoid the bullies. Rumors get spread more easily when you have a smaller class, so I'm betting that even the kids who haven't seen J and K + 8 know about Mady's behavior/"ugliness"/"gross teeth" by now.

You know, this is one of the saddest TV programs on now. The only reason I even watch the show is to make sure Kate hasn't shipped her children off to a foreign country and because I get to stay up late. ^^

But really, I'm a teenager and I'm in highschool, and I've noticed that my mother is adopting Kate's parenting techniques. I think it's horrible how Kate treats her kids, and pretty soon, I'm going to be treated that way too.

Jon and Kate Plus Eight is hazardous to your health.

All the others seem to favor Jon or the "family friend/stranger" of the week by choice.

I just hope it is never the "wrong" type of friend/stranger?

I hear you on that! I pray it never is the "wrong" type of friend/stranger!

Wonderful recap of a boring show. I use to enjoy J&K + 8 when the kids were little, because the kids were adorable and Kate, while annoying and whiney and high strung, was tolerable, and she seemed to love her kids, etc. But since the church garage sale, I have almost quit watching. I am not going to say she doesn't love her kids, but my oh my has fame gone to her over highlighted head. Such a sense of entitlement and so self rightouus. And the Muffy favoritism is brutal for the other kids to have to deal with. Mady may be dealing with some major self esteem issues in the future.

Kate seems more concerned about what she can get for free and what the world owes her than she does about her kids or her husband (sans Muffy of course).

In response to CantWatchAnymore's comment regarding the tummy tuck special:

I have been viewing episodes from season 1 and I completely agree. Kate has always been a little crazy, but there was a time when she GENUINELY seemed appreciative of all the help she was getting and all the handouts. It's kind of creepy to see how much that has changed and how seemingly self-centered she is now.

I use the be a big JK plus 8 fan until the episode in which your highness Kate threw a pair of sandals out the car window for Jon to pick up. She had the odacity to say "you don't have to pick them up". His first instinct was to pick them and it just showed how programmed and intimitaded he is by this self proclaimed god. I honestly feel bad for this guy because the years of emotional abuse he has endured have led him to believe he is the help not the father.

If he ever gets the cojones to leave her I can only imagine the hell he will go through in family court. Even with all the footage of him coming home from work (when he used to) to bathe, dress, and put the kids of to bed. Followed by his morning ritual of waking the twins and getting them ready to go off to school while queen reject sleeps. Somehow she will twist things around to benefit HER not her "blessings".

I am baffled at her behaviour and the fact that this network chooses to advocate spousal and child abuse. I can speak from experience that words are not just words. A wounded heart and soul coming from your so call mother, your protector is only setting up the Gosselin kids with self-esteem issues. All the money in the world is not going help Kate or buy her kids love back. So, Mrs. Perfect I hope it is worth it. Because the way you bash your husband and especially your kids it is only gonna come back and bite you in the ASS! Remember, we are not young and hip forever. In case you forgot we age and get sick. And no ORGANIC diet in the world is going to let you live forever.

To you Kate...WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND. THE WAY YOU HAVE ERASED YOUR FAMILY OUT OF YOUR LIFE THAT IS HOW YOUR KIDS WILL ERASE YOU OUT OF THEIRS. IT WILL COME EASY SINCE THEY HAVE LEARNED THAT WELL FROM YOU. I GUESS THE FOOTAGE IS WHAT YOU WILL HAVE FOR FAMILY....PEACE

THANK YOU, fostersmom, for reminding me once again why I no longer watch this show. The only good thing about it is maybe recognising a little bit of yourself in Kate and trying to change that. Other than that, ugh, I can't stand them anymore.

If Kon ever did get around to divorce, could the show be submitted as evidence? Could one of the exhibits be a DVD box set?

If the show could be submitted as evidence, who would it benefit? Kate's going to come across as Psycho Bitch Supreme, but the footage doesn't exactly make a strong case for Jon as a saint, either.

Just wondering...

What is Kate doing in New York all the time? Noone mentioned how Jon emphasized how he worked 10 hours a day for the Governor. But the poor sap then has to come home to his 2nd job. Why did he have to bathe all the children every night. How many husbands do that and put all 8 kids to bed every night. Most mothers want to kiss their kids and read to them at night. What is Queen B doing this whole time. Oh yest cleaning PSYCHO.

How long did that joblast Jon? 1 year.(the job was handed to him on a silver platter by Kate's begging).I'm sure he wasn't qualified for it. My husband has been doing that for 17 years. He was so immature in that interview. Like...Like.. You know.. you know. Unbelievable. Queen B is really going to slam him (literally) when he gets home.

Hannie on the laps of her parents. She is essentially an only child. If you look up narcissistic personality disorder, it states that the parent has one golden child and ignores and is cruel to the others. That's Kate alright.

MakesMeCrazy2 said...

Poor Mady is going to see this ep one day and CRY over how her parents acted. How cruel can 2 people be??

When they are in the entrance of the dentist office there is a big "Happy Thanksgiving" poster so obviously this was just filmed in Nov. And after what she said about bringing Blankie this time after what happened on their LAST trip there, we can obviously see it's been more than 6 months since they were there. So now along with everything else she does wrong, Queen Kate can't do math!!

As if I didn't have enough reason to despise Kate, her comments about Mady and her "major" dental work really sliced my cheese. When Kate has a child who at 6 has, literally, NO adult teeth forming and who will have to rely on her rapidly deteriorating baby teeth for as long as possible until getting dentures/implants, thus necessitating crowns to keep the baby teeth protected so the poor thing isn't gumming it 'til denture time, THEN she can complain about "major" dental work. Until then, she can just shut it, because I (and other parents of kids with problems similar to my daughter's) KNOW about major dental work, and Mady's situation doesn't even come close.
Good god, that crazy idiot wouldn't know what "major" dental problems were if they came up and bit her on the nose.

Kris said...

I seriously hope Mady and her teeth that "need MAJOR dental work" bite her in the ass.

I used to be a fan of the show, but now it is just getting ridiculous. I noticed first how horrible she is to Jon and then when she made the sick kids lay on the laundry room floor. Also, the cupcake incident was awful. She is so mean to all of them and plays it off like she is just joking, but little kids don't get that kind of joking. She was a little more tolerable in earlier episodes, but I watched the tummy tuck episode the other day and I was appalled that she was trying to get a boob job out of the deal too. This doctor was giving her a free tummy tuck and letting her recover at his home and she had the nerve to want him to do her boobs too!! That just burned me up! Those poor kids are going to need major therapy when they grow up. I hope for their sake that there are some caring adults in their lives that we don't see on camera. They need that.

I just found this site a few weeks ago after I decided to stop watching the show. I only started watching the show last year. I have always been aware of the Gosslins since they were originally from this area when they had the twins. I was never a big fan of the family even before they had the show because I felt that they had two healthy children and CHOSE to have more knowing the outcome could be several using the methods they had used. Then they had the sextuplets and I remember all the hype in this area. I will never forget one of my trips to the local SAM's club and walking out the door to Kate selling hotdogs and hamburgers with a big posterboard next to her with pics of her kids. (Started expoiting from birth) I was disgusted!!! I just thought to myself (a person with only one child because that is what my husband and I could afford)she had two she wanted more and now she is crying poverty with her church friends and out there trying to make me feel guilty that they can't afford what they wanted. I live within my means and don't buy or have something I know I cannot afford. I heard they moved away and would occasionally see an Oprah episode but never watched the show.

I just tuned in to the show about a year ago and started watching to be nosey. I just recently got a DVR and would "tape" the show so I don't ever have to watch the commericals which support them. My husband would come in when I was watching and say why are you watching the "poor little rich family". I quickly became disgusted but watched anyway. After I saw the traveling episodes each one I watched becoming more disgusted. Then I heard the news that they moved a few miles from my house and more disgust as I drove by the house. Boy she has really done well selling hot dogs at the Sam's club!!! I have now stopped watching the show. I am glad to find this site and will be a frequent visitor to this site rather than watching and supporting TLC. Thanks!

The timeline makes sense. The tups turned 4 in May, 2008 so their 6 month check up would be in November, 2008. Knowing the Jacket Kate was wearing was used in their fall commerical, makes sense to me.
Just wanted to point that out.

The tups first visit to the dentist was aired 10/2007, not sure how much earlier it was filmed.

Kate mentioned herself that the "last time" Alexis went to the dentist , she was so upset she had to have her blankie (footage is shown from the first visit).

This was not their 6 month visit. And honestly, if she didn't make the actual 6 month mark, it's not the end of the world (although it's just another example of Kate's kids not being her priority), but why does she have to lie about EVERYTHING?

2stinkysforme said...

Ok, so I just did some research and you were almost right. The first dentist episode aired Nov 6, 2007. I specifically remember Kate saying in the All Smiles epi, she can tell the tups were 6 months older because how they acted so much better this time than the last, namely Alexis. Maybe she was confused? Honestly, why would she lie about it? I acknowledge she IS lying, but I wonder why? Either she believes her own lies (most narcissist’s do) and thinks everyone else will too, even though they can be proven a lie, or she is severely confused. Either way she is dumb, IMO.

Much of the focus of this show was that KON thinks that orthodontics (braces) = status. After all, the shape of Kate's face changed for the better after she had her braces on. Mady will be all that more attractive post treatment, which will get her more points with her Mom.

I thought I heard kate say on one episode that TLC makes 'episode suggestions' and they follow those if they (Kon) feel they are appropriate.......I guess that was a lie too. Why would you humiliate your children like that?
