Goodbye Anonymous

We've been talking about all the anonymous comments lately and the percentage is going up. Sadly, when anonymous responds to anonymous responding to anonymous, it's gotten too crazy. We've gotten some complaints about it also.

Beginning Thursday December 4th we began rejecting comments from anonymous. Please pick a screen name and use it. You only have to click the line above anonymous and type in the name of your choice. That way people can reference you by name. If everyone will do this and stop using anonymous, then we won't have to go to everyone needing either a blogger ID or openID.

I'll leave this open for comments for awhile in case there are questions.

Bravo. Excellent decision.

Just wanted to second Sharla on this important topic. It will take two seconds longer to pick a name. We really appreciate all our viewers and posters and we hope that this little change will not deter you from viewing and posting.

So glad to hear this. Thank you!

I think this plan is an excellent plan of action. Not only will it eliminate alot of confusion of replying to anon after anon, everyone will have an identity.

You Moderaters are the greatest!

Oh yeah and for anyone who cares to know, the name I used to use was Rosey in Washington, but I recently signed up for blogspot so my name will now be Janine (which is my real name). Rosey is my nickname because Rose is my middle name.
Anyway, I blog ALOT on my blog as well called The Beginning of My New Forever if anyone wants to read my blogs! I love feedback!

I'm happy with this change. I find it a little frustrating when people critcize other's opinions very harshly, but aren't brave enough to put a name by it. I feel if you're going to disagree with someone, you need to identify yourself. Otherwise I think it's akin to throwing tomatos from behind a building. I never sign in, I just click name/url and type it in quick.

Yea!! I had sent my opinion on anon. posters last night- how frustrating it was to follow a thread sometimes when everyone had the same name...Anonymous! Thank you for changing your policy on this. Of course, people can make up a name instead of using their real name, but that's alright, right? It just seems that a post has much more impact when there's a name attached. You get to where you recognize people by their names here and look fwd. to their posts, their opinions, their sense of humor.

No problem. We understand, and will abide by this decision(from a former anon!)

I've never understood anonymous, because Blogger makes it so easy to use any name you choose. I think this is a great idea.

Thanks, moderators! If I can figure out how to sign in with a name, anyone can!

How do you choose a name again?

Great idea........ anon can get pretty annoying!

Fine by me.

Complaints about what name people use? Seems silly to me : ) I noticed where Jon has posted some comments he also complained about it. Were any of these from him by chance? You all do realize a person can make up any name at all to use, right? What is the difference? Seems odd to me.

Can someone explain the difference between openID and name/URL? I've always posted as anonomous b/c I didn't know what they mean.

Very nice change!

Thank you for doing this.

OpenID is a formal "thing" on the internet. If you Google openID you will get sites where you sign up and then get an ID you can use at multiple sites. Name/url is what we're asking people to do at a minimum. Click there and enter the name of your choosing.

For the comments about don't we know anyone can pick any name, yes we know that. But this gives people a bit more continuity for those who aren't going to use multiple names for their posts.

Wow...I was able to sign up and get past those squiqqley letter things!!! I am usually hopeless at computer things.

Thank you for explaining how easy it is. (tech challanged but learning)

I appreciate this blog, thanks.

Great idea, mods. Some of us are anonymous because we are lazy and it is the last amount of work to hit the anonymous button. Will think of a name, stick to it and be anonymous no more.

Thank you very much. If someone is so Proud of their remark and brave enough to post it, then they should be Proud enough to put their name to it. thank you for getting rid of the Anonymous comments.

I have a slightly unrelated question. I'm not blog or chatboard savvy and I feel dumb asking this but what is the significance of the "gate" in "gumgate, Joelgate, cupcakegate..."?

The notes that I've seen sent to the mods about this issue all had names attached to them. They weren't sent in anonymously.

-----------------------

It gets confusing because the "gate" titles were created here but are not part of the official title of the episode. It's a play on "Watergate" and any other morally deficient scenario.

Do you want an explanation of the episodes/titles or were you just asking about "gate"? I'd be happy to break them down for you!
