"State Treasures" Now Tarnished

Since Jon and Kate Gosselin's sextuplets were born, they have been showered with love, time, volunteers, free food, free trips, free year of taxpayer-paid nursing, free TAP college funds for 8 created for them by the Lt. Governor, and kindness from many many many people and businesses in the great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The Lt. Governor even called the sextuplets "State Treasures". So it was very upsetting to me when on last nights episode of their TV series, TLC's Jon and Kate Plus 8, Jon and Kate made disparaging remarks about my great state. Last night's episode showcased their trip through Virginia and North Carolina. They looked at houses and property because apparently they are moving.

The first house (http://tour.circlepix.com/tour.htm?id=591089) is an astounding $1.9 MILLION DOLLARS! They then looked at 12 acres of woodland. Neither were good enough for them. They then went to their NC beach house for their vacation and took a Jeep tour of the beach and climbed a lighthouse. After they came home to Pennsylvania they sat down for the couch interview.

This is the dialogue from the show last night:

"There is so much more to do down there [in North Carolina]!"
"Yeah, what is there to do in PA?"
"Look at silos?"

They acted like Pennsylvania sucked and all there was, was Silos and Farmland, and PA was boring and not good enough for their $1.9 million dollar tastes!

I guess that once they suck Pennsylvania and its citizens dry and treat us like their servants (from reports we've heard), we Pennsylvanians are a little boring. But our state is waiting on pins and needles for you to leave so we can rinse the bad taste from our mouths that having you as a neighbor has caused.

But for all you normal, regular families (those who let the kids have fun and get messy) out there who want a great vacation and fun educational trip I leave you with a few links:

Don't let the door hit you!

That's not what I heard them say. They were wrapping up the discussion of the lighthouse tour and I heard Jon say it was just another thing for them to do and get to experience. The interviewer said, "...that you wouldn't get to do here?" and Jon said "yeah, I don't see many lighthouses around here, I see silos." And he laughed. And it was funny. Without ocean, there's not a lot of need for light houses in PA. I don't think that comment was a big deal at all.

As a resident of PA it's your right to be happy about or upset with how your government spends your tax dollars. And you might be offended by a lot of things that have happened over the years. But I didn't think there was anything about the episodes with the NC trip or that interview that was disparaging toward the state of PA. In fact, I think J&K+8 has shown the state of PA in a very positive light throughout it's airing. The variety and amount of different things the family has been able to do within a short driving distance was pretty impressive and made it seem like a very nice state in which to raise a family.

BTW, I've driven through PA many times and think it's one of the most beautiful states in the country. It's like driving through a beautiful painting with a gorgeous view no matter what direction you look. Truly spectacular.

It's always been a pet peeve of mine when people are judgmental about geography. The bottom line is that happy, carefree people are happy and carefree no matter where they are and complainers will complain no matter where they are. Geography has nothing to do with it. I'm a Mid-Western girl and I've lived in five states and have always found plenty to do no matter where I land.

The Gosselins better hope that the State of PA doesn't start declaring some of their practices fraudulent and want some of their money back. Also, to participate in a TAP college fund, don't you have to be a resident of the state?

Ummmmmmmm.....being from ERIE, on one of the GREAT LAKES we have a LOT of lighthouses. HELLOOOOOOOO...... PA is not a landlocked state. I encourage you all to take a peek at our little city. It's a tourist town with lots of beaches and shopping! http://www.visiteriepa.com/

No silos, but lots of lighthouses.

I just constantly roll my eyes everytime they speak. They make themselves sound so stupid. Between Philly, Pittsburgh, Erie, Harrisburgh, and the 4 other metro areas of PA...there is a LOT more to see than silos.

PROUD to be an Erie-ite!

Anonymous said...

"PA is not a landlocked state"

No, but it's a big state and much of it IS land-locked. And the Gosselins don't live in Erie, so they probably do see more silos than light houses.

Steph said...

PA is SO diverse! I mean, you have Philadephia and Pittsburgh! You have Carnegie Mellon, the Liberty Bell (and all of the history that comes with it!) and the Steelers! It just doesn't get any better than that, as far as diversity of cities goes. I could spend months in Philadelphia looking and learning alone. I am sad our trip there was so short!
So, from a non-Pennsylvanian, your state rocks, and is diverse enough to find a hometown for everyone.

(Now Kansas? Truly silos....)

I just wanna say to the OP that people complain about having nothing to do no matter where they live. The grass is always greener.
I'm in Houston TX and the people I went to school w/ "couldnt wait to get outta here!" bc there was nothing to do.

Excuse me? Yeah, OK.
*Rolls eyes*
That makes no sense.

Like I said grass=greener on the other side.

"No, but it's a big state and much of it IS land-locked. And the Gosselins don't live in Erie, so they probably do see more silos than light houses."

It's just not cool to say that the entire state is pretty much full of silos. They have been treated well by this state, and if they are going to speak of the state as a whole, they need to realize what a diverse state we are! We get 120 inches of snow here in Erie per winter, but down south of us things are much warmer! It would make no sence to say that PA is a very snowy state, because while that is the truth for ME, it's not true of the entire state.

Lynn said...

Oh, I'd love to live in Erie. I *love* snow! Considering I'd really love to live in Maine, Erie is probably heaven in PA.

We live in Lancaster County, but in Manheim Township, which is closer to Lancaster City and about 20 minutes away from the Gosselins. I grew up in the central part of the state (Lewisburg area) and there is not much to do up there unless you like nature, IMO. (Hunting, hiking, canoeing, etc.)

In Lancaster County, there are tons of things to do. I think the episodes of all the Gosselins' day trips proves how much there is to see and do within a reasonable distance. I personally love that the mall is only 5 minutes away, versus 25 minutes "back home."

Hmm... the Gosselins have to travel about 20 minutes to the mall. Maybe they should move over here to Manheim Township, it's more uppity anyway, they'd fit right in to some of the million-dollar neighborhoods. LOL. If they liked Wyomissing, they'd love Township. (No offense to other residents, but a lot of people here are pretty snobby.)

Lynn said...

"It would make no sence to say that PA is a very snowy state, because while that is the truth for ME, it's not true of the entire state."

Correct... in Lewisburg we got a lot of snow (much less than Erie, but enough to enjoy it). In Lancaster we barely get any. 2 hours south makes a HUGE difference.

It is very sad that Jon and Kate have to uproot their family and take them away from a state that has constantly supported them to find their greener pastures.

It is even more unfortunate, however, that no matter how many gardeners and caretakers Figure 8 hires to keep that grass green, unhappy circumstances and six 4 year olds using potty chairs in the yard will make the grass as brown as it became for them in Pennsylvania.

I live in Ontario, so somewhat similar to Penn in terms of vegetation and climate and such (although I think your winters are a tad milder than ours lol). I've been to Penn several times and I absolutely love it there. The drive down through the Poconos to Philly is amazing and the people are so friendly. There is so much history and so much to see and do. I go at every opportunity to visit a close family friend who lives in the suburbs of Philly (well worth the 8 hour drive!). I was sad to hear Kon slag Penn because it's probably my fave of all the States I've been to thus far (15 in total).

Try not to feel too bad about your beautiful state being dissed, because you really just have to consider the source. :-)

Hi Erie Girl, I am by the Outlet Mall. The state IS a very beautiful state. Friends are always amazed when they come to visit at the amount of lakes and streams we have here.

I grew up in Wyomissing (Jon graduated 3 years ahead of me), and I'm so happy to hear that they're not trying to move back there. They actually lived across the street from me right after they had the twins.

They definitely would not be welcomed back. My mom constantly heard stories about them while they lived in Wyo. She told me how someone had offered them a van, but they said no because it wasn't nice enough. She also told me about how Kate expected the local grocery stores to give her huge discounts when she came in. My mom knew back then that Kate was bad news, and now I finally see it.

Anonymous said...

I guess we're watching a different show. I still don't see where the Gosselins "dissed" the state of PA in these episodes. They went on a vacation that was out-of-state and they enjoyed it. People do it all the time, no matter what place they call home. There's just no real controversy here, unless you want to create it.

beachluvin said...

Kate Gosselin is the type of person that is never satisfied. Not satisfied with just having twins, the state she lives in, her homes, donations, cars, regular food, her family, her friends, her lifestyle, her husband...... the woman CAN NOT be satisfied!!! She will NEVER be completely happy.

I actually feel sick to my stomach after seeing the photo of them in Hawaii. Her in her white dress and bouquet. What a JOKE!!! The sickest part is that I was married on Maui 22 years ago. My marriage is as strong as ever and I couldn't be happier. These two make me sick.

A prior poster has a great point. If the Gosselins move to SC, will they be allowed to cash out their TAP? We have one for our son in our state, and if we were to move, we'd have to cash it out with a tax penalty, or roll it into something else. Maybe I dont know anything about it, but that's what I thought about it.

How stupid for taxpayers of PA to foot the bill for those kids' college tuition, and they up and leave.

But they DIDN'T say the entire state is pretty much full of silos. They said they enjoyed that the kids had an opportunity to do something they normally don't get to do. When asked "...you mean around here?" they said yes. They weren't asked about the state of PA at all and didn't say anything about the entire state of PA.

They went to the Carolina's for a nice family vacation and did some fun things they wouldn't do at home, including walking to the top of a very nice lighthouse. Good for them.

If Jon is so bored, he could go back to school to complete a degree. In a irl university he'd get free access to the gym (fluffy bunnies), and an online university could keep him in his closet...so Kate would be--if not pleased, at least not rabid (=good day).

My vote is for Jon staying in the closet on his computer. At least then we'd get a better G-town website.

For one, I was married on the same island where Jon and Kate are "renewing" their marriage vows. My family is from Hawaii and it is a very special place to me, not just a vacation destination. My marriage vows mean a lot to me. I take them very seriously and always have. I treat my husband, my family, his family and my friends with the respect they deserve. While Jon and Kate Gosselin exploit their children so they never have to work another day in their lives, their marriage seems to be unraveling in front of thousands if not millions of viewers each week. I guess Figure 8 decided it was time to renew their vows to give their fans a little reassurance that all is well. Complete bullshit in my opinion.

He wasn't the "family" kind of guy either... at least that was my husbands impression of him. I think its sad the kind of people they have turned into. I just hope they don't move to VA!! I know this sounds extremely petty (which is why I totally think Kate may be using this reasoning), but Kate has mentioned several times that the garage is like another living space during warm weather because she sends the kids out there to play to get them out of the house. I'll bet part of the reason she wants to live in warmer weather so badly is so she doesn't have to deal with her kids being indoors so much.

Exactly! She has mentioned that they drive her nuts during the winter, which is understandable but does she need 8000 square feet of space?

I wouldn't move from Northeastern Pennsylvania if you paid me. I love our seasons. There is always something to look forward to - the foliage is always going to blossom in the springtime, those three feet of snow will eventually melt, the trees are always going to be full of color in the autumn and the heat of the summer can't last forever...

Those two will move down there and be disgusted because another Bertha will hit, they'll lose everything and the fine State of North Carolina will have to foot yet another of their bills.

Also, how long have they been married? I always thought vow renewal took place on a twentieth or twenty-fifth anniversary.

I remember the first time I saw the one hour special. I was intrigued by their story for the same reasons many of you were. The kids were cute and it was interesting to see the day to day struggles and joys of raising two sets of multiples. I would catch the show on occasion but it certainly wasn’t on my list of must see tv. That is until this past spring when I was diagnosed with cancer. My post chemo regimen included plenty of rest, liquids, and of course lots of tv watching. I really got into J&K+8, I was able to catch up on all the episodes. It was mindless entertainment and took my mind of my current situation.

I was happy to see that the kids were given opportunities to travel and experience new things. For example, I didn’t mind the all expense paid trip to Disney. Having worked at Disney in the past, I know how quick they are to comp a trip in return for a little PR. After all, the kids can’t help that they were born multiples. They should have the same opportunities as everyone else. Obviously, things have really changed. It’s now a show about Jon and Kate. It’s all about them and their never satisfied greed. They appear to be so ungrateful and lack any understanding of how truly blessed they are.

Needless to say, my life too has changed dramatically in the last few months. No 25 year old ever expects to be diagnosed with cancer, yet it has been a blessing in disguise. I now realize how fortunate I am to have family and friends who love and support me at all costs. I’m grateful that I have a roof over my head and food on my table. Most importantly, I now understand that without your health you really have nothing. I’m lucky my cancer has a 90-95% cure rate. I’m going to go on and have a happy and healthy life.

It saddens me that Jon and Kate don’t recognize all of the blessing they have. I’m sure even in Maui, in her pretty white dress, surrounded by her 8 little blessing Kate still found something to complain about. I hope I’m wrong but I doubt it.

I keep waiting for some motivated journalist to put all of this together. The state of PA SHOULD do an audit on them. If in fact they had $$$$ in the back, while collecting medicade/medicare? services, that is fraud. Nad whas Jon collecting unemployment as well? You have to be actively looking for work during that time. Just because someone wants to move out of state doesn't mean they have bad feelings about the state they are leaving behind. There are plenty of reasons why people move. J&K stated they want to live in warmer climates. Certainly a valid reason. And I don't think Jon's comment about silos was meant to be derogatory. Cripe, I live in upstate NY. We have plenty of silos too and I'd love to live in a warmer place- sure doesn't mean I hate NYS! Let's try to keep level, logical thinking here.

Kate is definitely in for a rude awakening if she thinks she can send her kids out to play all day in the summer. I live in Memphis, TN (and would assume NC has a similar climate from the humidity comments I've read) and there are days when my 17-month-old and I can only hang outside for half an hour before being drenched with sweat. For weeks at a time the heat index here is well over 105 degrees.

No kidding! We live in SC, and my kids don't play outside much after lunchtime, when it really gets hot. Some days they aren't allowed out at all, since occasionally we get air stagnation advisories when it's REALLY hot (over 100) and not windy.

We also used to live in Coastal NC, and the humidity in the summer was brutal.

I think Kate is looking forward to the mild winters where the kids might be able to play outside year round instead of being inside and on her nerves. Either way, she'll never be happy because happiness isn't about geography. Happy people are happy no matter where they live.

So sad that Jon and Kate have strained those vows they made to each other to the point where they've had to renew them so soon.

I live in the central part of NC ("the Piedmont"), and yes, the humidity in summertime is brutal. Unless they're moving to the mountains in the western part of the state, they're in for a lot more than just a "warmer climate". And while our winters tend to be milder than in the North, we've had ice storms that compare to Northern winters. They may find PA wasn't so bad after all!

So sorry for what you are going through at such a young age and glad that a bright future awaits you on the other side of this ordeal.

Unlike this poster who has found good in her adversity, Kon will never be happy, no matter where they live or what they get. Barring a complete 180, these two will continue to be dissatisfied with what they have and go after more, only to find that to be unsatisfying as well. They are empty inside and trying to fill up their lives with things. It never works. Happiness is found within, and Jon and Kate are not happy people. Unfortunately, they are taking their children down the wrong path with them, and the kids don't get a choice.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, but I know sarcasm when I see it! (NY-er here, and we've perfected the art!)

To me, it seems as though they are too big for their state, they hate their neighbors, and they want a huge new space, in a new state, with NO neighbors around to stop in front of their yard and read their signs.

If history repeats itself, they will find a brand spanking new Assembly of God church to join, and that church will be more than happy to hand out more goodies to them because they will ooh and ahh over they adorable little babies the way the nation did when this show was launched.

I'm happy their kids are being given many wonderful opportunities and experiences that many other multiples cannot enjoy because their parents can't afford it. However, it's painful to watch their parents hop on the coattails of their windfall.

Though from the south, I've been living in Maryland for a while and have done quite a bit of traveling in PA. It is varied and beautiful. But I can't be too harsh on J&K here. Thinking that wherever you live, wherever you are from, is the worst place to live is a cliche. No matter where you go, PA, the south, everywhere, everybody always assumes that their place is the worst place. A immature attitude, indeed, but not unheard of.

The Lt. Governor even called the sextuplets "State Treasures".

I think this bugs me more than J & K dissing my state. There is nothing special about the Gosselin kids other than there are six of them. ALL of the kids in PA are state treasures.

The Gosselin kids are not more special than my kids simply because I only have two nor are the more special than the neighbors' kids, or the kids down the street, etc.

If J&K hate it here so much, I'd be happy to have my tax dollars back so they can bleed another state dry.

It was mentioned that a journalist from People magazine was at the hotel in Maui interviewing Jon and Kate. I find People magazine to be reputable, do you think they will ask some of the questions that most of us want answered? Or, is the general opinion that People will write about another unusual family trying do the best they can. If thats the case, how do they think that a family of 10 can afford a stay at a 5 star resort just to renew their vows after 9 years of marriage. Not even a milestone year.
Also, I agree that the National Enquirer is not the most reputable but remember they were the first to report the John Edwards affair last year among other things.

Anonymous said...

Even though the National Enquirer is not considered the most reputable of sources, yes, it did accurately report the Edwards affair and now it's mainstream news. The J&K news, as reported in the Enquirer, would probably never make it in the mainstream press as it would be considered "politically incorrect. We shall see.

I also read in the National Enquirer recently about Obama's skirt chasing antics and how he and his wife are having serious problems. Again, we shall see!

Anonymous said...

"I find People magazine to be reputable, do you think they will ask some of the questions that most of us want answered?"

IMO, People magazine will feature a sugar coated 'fluff' article on on J & K. The same old story of, being parents of two sets of multiples, how they are truly blessed, how their 'faith' in God is what gets them through each day. Im sure the opportunity will present itself for Kate to remind readers of their upcoming book and dvd. If J & K were asked the hard core questions that many want answers to, I am sure their answer went something like, 'nothing you read in print or on the internet is true unless approved by us.' When in all actuality they are REALLY saying, ' we are not ready at this time to indulge our viewers and 'faithful fans' with the truth as it may jeopardize our ability to further exploit our children for the purpose of self serving monetary gain'.

I don't get the uproar over them not wanting to live in PA. If they weren't able to previously because of jobs (lord knows they don't have to worry about that any more), or whatever--now they can. A lot of people hate Ohio, call it the most boring state ever, etc. but I don't typically get up in arms about it. What is good for one is not necessarily good for the other. I've never heard them say they love PA and want to stay there forever. Also, I don't think they are being ungreatful by moving. Wanting to move is kind of a fact of life.

Also, I agree that the National Enquirer is not the most reputable but remember they were the first to report the John Edwards affair last year among other things.

Yeah, and CNN/AP/MSNBC/etc didn't run with the story at first because of the source, and wanted to get it confirmed on their own. It could be the same situation here with J&K.

As for "People", I rarely read their magazine, but I have a feeling that J&K will dictate what's put in the article, or they would refuse it all together.

I've heard this said before, "People magazine is where the truth goes to die".

I think we can all feel comfortable knowing that People magazine will do the "politically correct" thing and report the status quo story. I don't think you'll see any negative references.

~~I don't get the uproar over them not wanting to live in PA. I know a lot of people who absolutely hated where they grew up and left when the opportunity presented itself (two of my brothers have moved to warmer weather).~~

I'm not sure the uproar is because J n K want to move to a warmer climate. The way I read it is their seemingly ungrateful attitude towards an entire state that kept them from being homeless. I can not imagine why they wouldn't at least "act" thankful towards the good people of Pa. since we know they are great actors, or story tellers if you will.

Last week was my last episode. I saw photos of their vow renewal and all I can say is they must think viewers are complete idiots. Figure 8 has turned into a smoke and mirrors show, do they really think we'd believe the J n K love story???

I think those viewers who are fed up owe it to the children to boycott the Hawaii show. What a twisted view of love these poor kids are being shown. First mommy and daddy fight and yell (a lot) then mommy whacks daddy, then they proclaim their love with vows at a fancy/free location. This farce has no business being on TV, until the children are off camera and it's called what it is:
"The Jon and Kate Gimme More, Gimme More Show!"

funkycatt said...

What's ironic to me about this is they've shown Jon and Kate doing a lot of really fun things in PA. The Crayola Factory, Hershey Factory and Sesame Place are in PA and looked like a major blast. To the point I'm a little jealous I don't live there.

Not to mention the places they haven't gone. I went to Philly with a friend years ago and I still remember how cool and fun it was.

Also, what's up with disparaging farm land (silos) without those silos there wouldn't be any organic chow to feed the kiddos.

I'm personally not from PA, but I had to comment. Maybe Kon is so easily bored with PA because they've gotten enough free trips throughout the state. The tups have probably had more trips there than most have had in there entire childhood. I'm sure a couple of years in NC, their attitude will be exactly the same.

funkycatt said...

I just checked out the wedding/vow renewal picture, and those kids are insanely cute in their white dresses and aloha shirts.

I seriously thought those kids could not get any cuter, but awwww.

Let's hope Kate remembers she can bleach the girls dresses and lets them get as dirty as they want.

Boycotting the show won't accomplish anything unless you're a Nielson family and it's sweeps... which it's not. The only thing that will do any good is to contact the sponsors of the show. By that I mean those advertisers who spend $$ running their commercials during prime time. The companies who just donate stuff in return for mentions aren't the sponsors I'm talking about. We have to contact the actual advertisers during the show that runs on Monday nights. Those are the ones who are spending the big bucks. The board Admins put up a post addressing this issue earlier today.

I see the People story as a PR move to offset the negative NE article. Damage control anyone? People would only write about the truth AFTER J&K went off the air. Too many politics are probably involved before that.

I guess we will have to wait and see until the episode airs.

BK said...

This show has become a sham and I'm not talkin' pillows.

People in this area aren't sad the Gosselin's are moving. We're better than that. What's upsetting is that after all this time and all the people, businesses, and cash, we've given to help, they don't seem to be very thankful for how well they have it. This is a family with eight children who has been on more vacations than most families take their entire lives. This is a family of ten who has never had to fret about feeding, diapering, clothing, or caring for the kids. This is a family with eight kids that has never had to say "no" to an event or trip because of a sick child (think about that). There has always been an answer to their needs and it's not God. It's the community. It's the generosity of the state of Pennsylvania. How many dollars did this family of eight pay for the births of their children? Nothing. Despite the extended hospitalization and NICU care. Nothing. I have premature singletons and we almost went broke paying the hospital bills. I'm not saying that they shouldn't have been paid. But, where is the appreciation for what they have? When they got a remodel, Kate started complaining before the paint was dry. After a weekend of intense labor and freebies, this is the woman who couldn't see that a community did everything in their power to help. She saw "a disaster." After getting a new house, she could only see the rooms she didn't have. Despite the fact that most families who choose to have eight children live in much less. Kate doesn't enjoy; she covets. She wanted an easy life and she found a way to get it. Unfortunately, it was on the backs of her eight children. Remember, this isn't a family who took a bit of time off to deal with the multiples and then went back to work. Jon was raised in a well-off home and never knew what it meant to need. Kate was raised in a family that treated her like the beautiful queen bee. I've heard some people speculate about her childhood. They want to know if they had needs met by the church because she's a PK. The answer is not as often as needed to create these sort of entitlement issues. Her dad and mom are better people than to demand things they want over what they need. Her parents are decent people. This can be seen in her brother Kevin and the other siblings.

People are tired. We've been lied to so many times that it's hard not to be cyncial. Kate said Jon would go back to work as soon as they got past this tough phase of infancy. The state gave him a job. He quit. He doesn't work in any capacity other than doing appearances. Some might say that was just a change of plans...but, it's hard to believe they ever meant to work after the way things have done down. Kate said she'd give all the freebies to charity. Well, that never happened. Everything went to consignment or was sold in yard sales. She was even approached by a friend who knew a person in our community who was about to have twins and wasn't financially able to pull everything together. Did Kate donate to the cause or pass along the generosity? Nope. Kate and Jon said in an early interview that they wouldn't make a spectacle of the children. HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAAHA!! Yeah. I'll let you all finish laughing. They played the poor card and then had the audacity to tell people that used items weren't what they had in mind. So much for beggars not being choosers, eh'? Jon and Kate promised to give back to the community at some point...what they didn't mention was that they'd hang a speaking fee on it. There are other, smaller fibs, but it's trivial stuff. The point is: E-town, Wyomissing, and surrounded areas are exhuasted by the Gosselins. We got burned. Everyone here feels for the families who did nothing more than help them in their time of greatest needs and expected nothing but love in return. Did Kate ever offer Jodi a spa day? Did she ever take her to lunch or give her a nice gift on mother's day for making her life easier? Nope. So...some of you will have to excuse us locals. To quote Kate..."We're exhausted." What's sad is that there are people who will think twice the next time a family with multiples needs help.

RE: Pennsylvania

I too was annoyed by the PA bashing.

As a military family, we moved 17 times in 22 years and (With the exception of Breezewood, hee hee -and even that had a unique, funky character) the state of Pennsylvania, at least what I saw of it is one of the country's best kept secrets. In the 80's and 90's, when my kids were small, we were fortunate enough to make frequent visits to the beautiful, rolling green hills of Lancaster County, Historic Philly, Hershey Chocolate World (love it at Christmastime!), Sesame Place, The Crayola Factory (I still have a really cool antique wooden crayon bin used in the factory in the olden days!) shop the outlets in Lancaster and Reading, see amazingly restored historic homes and best of all, meet some of the finest most friendly people ever!

Shame on anyone that can't see the beauty in this interesting and friendly state. :-) If you can't find anything more than silos to love about PA, then your glass is truly half empty.

Just some insight from a PR perspective and the PEOPLE magazine article and MO (and not the defining one at that). The job of the Gosselin's PR firm is create awareness of the show and its characters, its accomplishments, direction, and in the Gosselin's case huge sympathy, I mean apathy. Some gifted, persuasive writer who can command attention from a spirited view usually writes an article(s) about the client - from the client's perspective and the message and image they wish to communicate to the public. The completed article is sent out to the various pertinent news mediums - print, radio, tv, etc. These are called story leads or templates, not headline news worthy or hard core journalism, just a good ol fluff piece. This is probably how PEOPLE got their lead to write a story on the Gosselins. Remember, PR means preception and reality. And the Gosselin's PR folks drive this big ol Hummer of perception past numerous intersections of reality and exit onto a tragic comedy - without even signaling. The firm probably even pointed to this blog as proof people are talking about the Gosselins and want to know the true story behind them... Mark my words, next will be the paparazzi stalking the kids and KON. Let's hope they drive Kate into an unretrievable psychotic tailspin and she shaves her head but instead of berating the public with an umbrella, we hope she takes her family into seclusion and away from the public eye.

Now, I've sat back and read just about everything here, thinking perhaps some poor summer intern at TLC/where ever has to review these posts and present a recap of them in the morning staff meetings - They will use this blog as a tool to improve and deflect the bad with good publicity and constructive image rebuilding - hence the new edits on reruns, Kate's softer, colorful wardrobe, scripted affection, etc. In the PR world any buzz about the show (good or bad) is good for the show and ratings. Kate is the woman we love to hate, and we watch each week not because we love the show and are fans of Jon and Kate, but because we can't wait to see what awful thing Kate and Jon will do/say next to each other. F8 Films has a cash cow to feed and take care of, (and I could probably talk about manure here...) But in the end, and imo, all 8 of those precious souls will be damaged adults. I've noticed most celebrities are careful to sheild their children from the camera. Jon and Kate should take note and run with their money.

They can cash out their TAP account at any time. They just have to pay taxes on it.

http://www.nowu529.com/

"Even though the money is not in your estate, you, as the Account Owner, maintain complete control over how the assets are used."

"Amounts in a 529 account can be withdrawn for purposes other than the payment of the beneficiary's qualified higher education expenses at an eligible educational institution. These are called non-qualified withdrawals..."

"** A withdrawal or a portion of a withdrawal not used to pay for qualified expenses may be subject to federal income tax and a 10% federal penalty tax, as well as state and local income taxes."

So basically, they can cash out money that was meant for those kids' education (Lord, please lead them to college because we all know Mommy Dearest will not be doing anything to support them past the age where she can still market them...), DONATED by the state for such purposes, and buy the next spa day for Kate with no questions asked. Nice. I hope they do the right thing with that.

Hey, I've been a lurker here for a while, and I just want to point something out. I could be wrong, and if I am, I'd be glad to admit fault, so here goes; I live in New York and when I started college, I was awarded a scholarship- but I was unable to receive any of the money unless I applied for TAP. My understanding, (even now I believe this is how it works) is that every United States citizen/student is eligible for financial aid (FAFSA) and TAP. You simply have to apply for it and give proof of address, living situation (i.e, how many siblings/how many siblings in college) as well as the annual income, along with some other basic information. Based on that information a student can receive a substantial amount of financial aid. By saying that the Gosselins have college funds set up for them, do people mean that there is money apart from TAP and FAFSA that they are going to get? Or is it the actual TAP money that EVERY student is eligible for that they made J&K aware of? Once again, what I'm bringing up may only be the case in NY but as far as the tups and twins' college situation goes, when the time comes, there shouldn't be any problem financially.

Sig said...

Arnr: I was under the impression they were given 529 accounts, which is not the moneys every person is eligible to apply for, but rather something that parents contribute payments to over a certain amount of years.

We pay 179.00 a month for 12 years (good Lord, times 8 and that is ALOT of money they were just donated if it's the same thing) to pay off what the cost of tuition was for 2006 when my son was born. He will have full paid tuition if he goes to a school in our state. If he goes out of state, he can apply the money saved to the current tuition rate at whatever school he chooses. If he doesnt go to college at all, we can cash that out and use it to go to Europe, lol.

Hopefully this isnt the same and KON wont use the money to go to Europe before the kids can even decide if they want to go to college or not.

Once again, what I'm bringing up may only be the case in NY but as far as the tups and twins' college situation goes, when the time comes, there shouldn't be any problem financially.

FAFSA and TAP are two different things, as far as I understand. The FAFSA form is for applying for government-funded financial aid (Pell Grants, etc.). The TAP that the governor mentioned seems to be a PA-specific "Tuition Account Program"; it isn't something you apply for, it's something you save for yourself, with 2 parts - a 529 account and a pre-purchased tuition plan. For the 529, the parents set up an account for the child, then grandparents or whoever can add money to the account. So the TAP account will only have what the family (or sheeple) put into it, plus growth from investments or interest.

http://tinyurl.com/63uuls has the very basic information; I think the name has changed from TAP now and it's run by Upromise. At any rate, if all 8 kids do go to college and are attending at the same time, the family's expected contribution from the FAFSA will probably be pretty small.

That's not the best explanation, I'm sure, but I've just started reading up on 529s myself (we need to start one for our son).

When I first watched episodes of JK8 I could not believe nor stand the behavior of Kate - my initial instinct - Yes, people like that do exist in the world and unfortunately the rest of us have to put up with them. I was slowly won over by the kids for their quirky and cute personalities (despite the circumstances).

Having recently seen the episode(s) of their trip to the OBX (Outerbanks) and their property search I decided to 'look them up' (which I have never done before) as I live in N.C. to see if indeed they were moving.

Especially after brushing up on more factual evidence of my initial instincts on Kate and the show, I can say I sincerely hope they do.not.move.here! Especially as I live in the area of N.C. where the production company is located and understanding the frustration that PA locals have gone through. Honestly, as someone who in addition to living (very happily) in N.C. once lived in California (fond memories, beautiful scenery), THAT is the state that would suit their (J & K) motives best.

No. I am not. Though, I do thank you for the quote nomination.

I have to say that you're not going to get many people who will admit their true identity in this blog. Even if you guessed correctly, there's no way any of us are as brave as Julie. She's amazing! Kate and Jon have already cut-off family that have less than complimenting, but very real, things to say. I have no doubt that friends or connections would be treated worse or even the recipient of legal action. That's why it is so important to say only things that are true and phrase personal feelings as such.

I just wish one of them would work. It's such a slap in the face to the people who have supported them. I was friendly with a couple once who were heavily into their Christian faith. The wife always talked about how God provided them with things, completely disregarding the fact that her husband worked hard at two jobs. Once they got a new mini-van and I heard the wife say to someone that they were so blessed because God provided them with a new vehicle. The husband was standing on the other side of me and under his breath said, "My @ss, I provided that van." I had a good laugh. I'm a firm believer that God provides us with the means and the ability to support ourselves and it's up to us to act upon it.

Well said BK!!

I loved Beth on the show. Her patience and love with the tups was such a breath of fresh air. I felt the same way about Jodi.

It annoyed me when Kate dropped 2 of the tups off at Beth's b/c the other little ones were home sick. I don't remember who she dropped off, but my gosh, they still could been carrying germs. So Beth has 2 recovering 3 yr. olds and most likely her kids will get sick as well. All this so Kate can relax a little?!

This woman thinks nothing of getting other people sick. Jodi and Kevin took care of them while they were sick, Beth had them sick, it's wrong. My girlfriends and I have a rule: "You must respect the stomach bug." That's one germ that earns quarantine in my book! Poor Kate must not have gotten the mommy handbook so many of us live by though.

Anyways...if you are Beth I will miss seeing you. J n K did a great disservice to their children by cutting out everyone who could truly protect them and love them. I wonder how they will explain all the missing people to the little ones, I'm sure Mady and Cara have already questioned them.

Did Kate actually have a yard sale? Did anyone in the neighborhood go or know someone who did?

I wonder how often she goes to consignment shops. I wish someone would take a picture of the stuff she drops off (6 identical kid outfits) is a big clue. It would help dispell the notion that maybe I am only seeing a part of her life and that she really does donate the stuff and just keeps it private.

I really do not remember anything specific beyond the usual yardsale type items of clothes, toys, etc. I did buy a pair of Kate's capris. At the time, only a few episodes have been aired. It never crossed my mind to pay attention to details at the time. I knew who they were before the show. I didn't like them (still don't), but it was an entire development sale, so I shopped their sale no differently than I shopped the other ones right there.

This year J&K did not participate with the development yardsale day. However, I did see Kate waiting in the big, black van for Jon and then a few minutes later they left. No kids that I saw.

I posted the other day about Jon claiming he was fired from his job when he really had stopped showing up. I did some further research on this and even though no one asked me to, I'd like to clarify what I found. What I love most about this blog is the focus on facts, not speculation and I do not want to detract from that.

I first asked my mother and a few of my friends if they remembered that incident. All of them did. My mother remembered that Jon stopped showing up to work after the tups were born and it turns out she was right. I had remembered that he stopped going before they were born. I subscribed to the Patriot's archives to look for the article. I could not find it. What I did find was an article dated July 8th, 2004. Here is an excerpt:

"He lost a previous job early in the pregnancy, then found one with a Reading-area fuel company.
He said he believes the recent dismissal was related to the demands of having sextuplets.
He hadn't gone to work since the first of the sextuplets left the hospital."

On July 10th the Patriot printed this: CORRECTION- THE FATHER OF THE SEXTUPLETS BORN RECENTLY AT PENN STATE MILTON S. HERSHEY MEDICAL CENTER SAYS THIS STORY INCORRECTLY STATED THE REASON THAT HE WAS FIRED. JONATHAN GOSSELIN SAYS THE READING-AREA COMPANY LET HIM GO FOR BUDGETARY REASONS, NOT BECAUSE OF THE DEMANDS OF RAISING THE SEXTUPLETS.

I believe the article I was posting about was published July 9th 2004. My mother and my friends remember the employer contacting the paper and some of the employees making comments in the article. I think Jon was then forced to issue the correction because he was caught. It seems Patriot did not archive this article and they only archived 3 letters to the editor regarding "Nursegate" although many, many irate people wrote to the paper following that article.
However, remembering is not fact, so there is no hard evidence regarding Jon's job situation after the tups birth. What we do have now is a record of Jon stating he was let go from that company due "budgetary reasons."

Which leads me to ask, is it the job Jon lost while Kate was pregnant the one where he tried get insurance for 10? The one they mention so often at their speaking engagements?

I was actually visiting Jodi during one of the yardsales last summer. They were selling the cribs that time. My husband walked down with our kids, but I didn't actually go down myself.

I also heard that they were trying to sell the table that was given to them. The one with the built in seats for the kids. I don't know if that was the same yardsale or not. She was asking a huge amount (over $1000) and Kevin told her he thought it was wrong for her to sell all of the things that were donated to them. I never heard what happened with the table.

Honestly, I would think that they would want to keep that table for the memories. It is a perfect symbol of the tups as babies...but, that probably doesn't mean anything to Kate. Anyone who could paint over their child's handprints...well, that says a lot.

Yes, Jon left his job for a more flexible one with Beth's husband. He did not have to come into work everyday, I took it as a telecommuting type thing. I assumed that went kaput when they refused to let TLC pay Beth when they filmed at their house. I don't think they needed the money, but talk about insulting after everything Beth and her family did for them. Good grief!

If Kate had just kept her mouth shut and let TLC pay Jodi and Beth and not insulted them, all this would not have happen. I wonder if she regrets it now?

I can't imagine Kate ever regretting anything. She has never shown any regret as far as being estranged from her family. She never shows any regret when it comes to the way she speaks to her husband and kids. Kate is too self serving to regret ANYTHING!!!!

*Sigh. My mother is exactly like this: the victim mentality. She yells, berates, demeans, is ridiculously passive agressive and then, at the end of the day, comes up with selfish reason why some people (children included) react negatively to her. I told her once (before a long period of silence between us), "Mom, you never think anything you do is wrong. You've never apologised for anything." It was met with tears and anger etc. B/C...I was, in her mind, attacking her without provocation. For people like Kate (and my Mom), it's never going to be OK. Everyone else is wrong or not good enough. Nothing can change that about them. I hope that her children do what I did: realize that their mom is not emotionally stable; that her treatment of them or their dad is not ok, and if they see Kate in their own actions and words, that they work to fix it...and apologise...always apologise and mean it.

"It would help dispell the notion that maybe I am only seeing a part of her life and that she really does donate the stuff and just keeps it private."

She doesn't keep her kid's bowel movements private, so she surely wouldn't keep "giving back" private.

Seti, my mother was the same way. The world revolved around HER. Everything in the household was hers...we were sitting on HER chairs, we messed up HER carpet, etc. When I was in my late 20s I had enough. I quit communicating with her because I couldn't be berated by her anymore. I didn't speak or see her for 5 years before she died suddenly. No I regret it? No! I'm in my 40s now and the only thing I regret is that I have no understanding of what it's like to have a mother's unconditional love. I have girlfriends who have such close relationships with their mothers, but that is a notion so foreign to me that I can't imagine it. Kate is heading down the same road as my mother. In 20 years it will be interesting to see what sort of relationship she has with her kids.

Hey, Christi and Sig; TAP in NY is given to you based on the annual income of your parents. Most college students are required (by their univeristies) to fill out both FAFSA and TAP in order to get either financial aid. Once again, this might just be how it works in NY. I have to add though, that our TAP funds do not take care of our college educations- people usually still have to pay some, and you have to apply annually for it.
If the Gosselins have the accounts where money is put into, then I sure hope that the money is still there 10-15 years down the line for when the children are ready to go to college!
Regarding the children, no matter which state they live in, they will be getting something (as opposed to the 'nothing' J&K imply) I guess my main reason for posting was either to correct people's understanding of financial aid, but I see now that it varies from state to state.
As long as the children have something to fall back on, because we all know that the freebies won't last forever!

For those that don't know, Multiple BlessingS is Kon's book coming out this fall.

And it's printed as "Multiple Bles8ings" on the cover, which just bugs me as beyond cutesy, but I'm sure it's right up the Grammar Queen's alley.

It seems Patriot did not archive this article and they only archived 3 letters to the editor regarding "Nursegate" although many, many irate people wrote to the paper following that article.
However, remembering is not fact, so there is no hard evidence regarding Jon's job situation after the tups birth.

Is there a local library (public or college) that might have back issues of the paper, either in print or on microfilm? If there is, that would be a way to get access to the letters to the editor and other things that weren't kept in the online archive.

In all fairness to Kate, she does give people choices. She made her sister chose between her and their parents, the sister obviously chose their parents. And I'm imagining that she gave Jodi a choice between her (Kate) and her sister Julie, and we know how that went. Poor Kate, reminds me of one of those old b&w movies where "Ms. Perfect" finally drives everyone away from her because she is so overbearing and disdainful of people, and she winds up stuck in her beautifully-appointed mansion surrounded by priceless treasures and antiques all alone. Now that's justice!

I think a more appropriate title would be: Multiple Ble$$ingS.

I think we should henceforth refer to the J&K marathons which air regularly on TLC as the "J&K Kon-athon".

As Kate indicate in previous episodes, "this has become a Gosselin family tradition." Tossing away friends and family after they've been sucked dry seems to be one of those traditions.

There are so many good quotes already nominated, but I can't let this one pass by without recognition!

I nominate this for comment of the week!

From what I read, prior to the removal of the comment section on the publisher's website, the publisher had already published a book titled, 'Multiple Blessings'. Thus, the use of the number '8' in the title of J & K's (and Beth) book title. As I recall, there were many negative posts stating that they were disappointed that this 'christian' publisher would agree to publish J & K's book given its similar title. Considering the majority of the responses on the website regarding J & K's book were negative , my guess is that is why the comment section was ultimately closed.

To the poster that could not find the old Patriot articles (or comments):

If you are looking for archived pages that may not appear online, try the Wayback Machine:

http://www.archive.org/web/web.php

Just type in the url that you are loking for and hit the Take Me Back button. You may be able to recover old articles and letters to the editor this way.

I wonder when the next "Kon-athon" will be on TLC?

I want to see more episodes of Kate's sauna visits, Jon's golf excursions and gym workouts, and tooth whitening escapades. It's all very relevanto to raising two sets of multiples.

I sure hope the Go$$elin$ get a real vacation after all the work they've done.

Wow, when you think about it, even way back when Kate got her tummy tuck, she was trying to wrangle a free breast enlargement from the doctor. Way to go, Kate!!!

About the $1000 table...I believe a table like that typically runs for about $600 through companies that sell items like for daycares. I know they make them for that price or less. Whether that particular one retails for $1000 or more, I don't know, but considering that A. It was donated and didn't cost them a dime and B. It was used and C. Anyone purchasing that table has six pretty good reasons for needing it, I would say that Kevin, Kate's brother was right to say that she shouldn't have been selling it for that price or any price.

I thought I had seen greedy people in my day, but these people take the cake!

I'm sick of hearing about "paying for 8 kids in college!!!!"

My parents didn't pay for my college.

Those kids can get scholarships, grants, loans...deal with it. Welcome to reality.

Kon thinks other adults should donate to it?! Or that Kon themselves need to pay for hundreds of thousands of dollars in tuition? Hello, in this day and age there are tons of other options besides bankrupting the parents or having other people foot the bill in donations. It's not a crime to shoulder most or all of the responsibilty onto the college student.

Jen said...

About the college thing...who says it's a parent's responsibility to foot the entire bill for college? My parents paid for my first year and I got loans and grants for the rest. I'm still paying off school!

My husband and I fully intend to do the same with our kids. It teaches you responsibility, which apparently Jon and Kate were never taught by their parents. You don't go through fertility treatments to have kids without stable incomes. That was the first, and probably biggest mistake they could have made, although considering the state of PA picked up their medical tab they probably laughed it off as no big deal.

I've heard Jon and Kate referred to as a wildfire that just burns through people, towns, resources...you know what professional firefighters do? They take out all of the fuel around a fire so that the fire has nowhere else to go. I'd like to think that by bringing awareness to Jon and Kate and this scam of a lifestyle, that we are accomplishing the same goal.

I'm tired of hearing about this college thing. I've got 2 nieces who paid their own way through college (1 at a private university) with loans, grants, scholarships and jobs. There is a way if the determination is there.

I agree, I definitely did. Even so, I would not wish that kind of academic pressure (to keep the scholarships) and the sacrifices (limited money for new clothes and no money for a car) on anyone.

But come on--it's not like Kate and Jon valued education for themselves. They got in and got out as quickly as possible without four year degrees, so I'm not buying that they are really worrying all that much about their kids being successful in higher ed.
