Sun, Seashells, and Scrapes Recap

This recap is brought to you by the letter “Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz….”

So, that’s it for the drama? Are things really back to normal? Just. Like. That?

A mere one week removed from a teary-eyed, soul-baring, hour-long confessional, our favorite manufactured family returned to a calmer place, much to the chagrin of everyone who just extended their subscriptions to US Weekly.

From the outset, we’re greeted with a not-so-familiar site – Jon and Kate, together on that double-wide armchair, joined by Mady – who is playing to the camera in a not so becoming way. Though, to the 8-year-old’s credit, it couldn’t have been easy sitting on the fragile block of ice put forth by her parents.

We quickly learn that Mady, by virtue of not liking skiing enough to get to go with Jon, had earned the right to spend some quality alone time with Kate (ironically, the same rights that Jon was elated to give up a few months back.)  According to Kate, Mady chose – without outside influence, of course – to go to San Diego, because when planning vacations, 8-year-olds always choose quiet spa getaways.

Take that, Disney-branded theme parks.

Rather than bore us with another jaunt through airport security, we are taken straight to SoCal, where Kate was feeding ducks with a curious lack of facial tics. This mystery continued on the couch when she reiterated (twice) how loose, casual and fancy-free the vacation was for both of them.  If you look carefully, though, you can see KG’s sphincter twitching ever-so-subtly while Mady threw raw squid to the water birds – a matter made worse when Jon interjected with the word “mucous-y.”

Back at Penn State’s Wernersville Campus, Jon was spending time with kids at least 5 years younger than his regular drinking buddies. With a typical enthusiastic display, Jon described his day of hiking through the woods, building a wooden swingset, and chasing his children around the driveway with an ATV with all the personality of a dial tone.

It was at this exact moment that I began praying for a bear to jump out of the forest and eat someone, but quickly stopped when I realized that the only reaction from Jon would be, “I didn’t aggravate that bear. I don’t care what people think. I only hope that when my kids – minus one of course – Google me, they’ll realize that the bear story was crap.”

I digress.

It seemed like business was going to pick up when Alexis – the Gosselin child who warrants a spin-off – tripped over a branch and bit a hole the size of Kate’s cervix, right through her bottom lip. And though Jon’s words said otherwise, even the most casual viewer could see that he somewhat enjoyed calling Kate to inform her of the news, if only to ruin her vacation.  But this “new and improved” Kate continued to shed her OCD-riddled behaviors, nary blinking an eye while Jon recounted little Lexi’s dance with tetanus.

(It’s a shame, too. Because, after Kate’s next anal retentive outburst, I planned to start calling her “Recto-Mom.” Alas, it was not meant to be…)

And for the most part, that’s how it ended. Alexis came back from the ER with a prescription for ice pops and a venti decaf iced mochachino, which – when pointed out by TLC’s crack writing team – became more desirable to the brood than all-you-can eat Skittles and a day without cameras.

Back on the beach, Kate continued to slather her money all over her children, by buying each child at home one Taiwanese hotel gift shop souvenir, right before spending $800 on a mani/pedi and private poolside luncheon for herself and Mady.

And that was it.

For all the dramatic marketing hype TLC threw into promoting this episode, it’s clear that when you strip away paparazzi reports and suggestive photos, the Gosselins make for some really boring TV.

But maybe it always was this way.  Before the scandals. Before Kate abused her husband to the point of Jager-Bombs. Before the show had a chance to become train-wreck television…there was a simple innocence to episodes like this that made them charming and enjoyable. Now, they just seem extremely well-organized, planned out, and manipulative. TLC will quickly learn that after the recent dramas, no matter how much they want it; there simply is no going back.

Whether it’s through Jon’s forced smiles, Kate’s newfound inner-peace, or just by having the troubled pair share a La-Z-Boy, it’s clear that the network wants us to fall back in love with the Gosselins, the same way they’re praying they fall back in love with one another.

And no, we’re not buying it this time around.

Well, not sure Professor...... I didn't approve of your comments on Jon, especially the dial-tone reference. I see him as a calm and steady influence on his kids. Thank God they have such an involved dad considering who they have for their mom!

Otherwise, I enjoyed reading the recap.

i was really impressed watching Jon on both episodes last night... He is really tender with the kids. Not detached - just calm and even. It was sweet. I was also impressed to see Kate with Mady. Even though it was all in response to the comments that Mady needs more on-on-one time, etc. the point was she got it. And with things going like they are, that child is going to cherish memories like the ones she made on that trip.

I'm confused. Is it possible that the episodes are not being shown in chronological order? The first episode, the one with the kids' birthday party, was taped in mid-May. The second episode, where Jon is putting up the kids' swing set, certainly looked like it was filmed in early April -- judging by the lack of leaves on the tree and the dead-looking color of the grass. Might this explain the absence of malice between Jon and Kate in episode two?

Ah, the simple life of simpletons! TLC gambled on these sorry excuses for parents, and this Monday's viewer numbers (per Radaronline.com) are about half of those from the season opener.

The new & improved Kate can't sustain the big numbers, apparently.

I'd love to see Kate's reaction to TLC's ad for parents expecting newborn multiples, wouldn't you?

Very funny. "all the personality of a dial tone". heehee.

I didn't watch, don't care to, but I am perplexed by the need to fly to San Diego for a "spa weekend".

Who are they kidding? I know it is still a little chilly here in the east, but is it really necessary to jet an 8 year old across the country to have fingernail polish applied? I find that so odd.

I see many comments about the San Diego “spa” in this episode. What an understatement! I live in San Diego my family splurged on a “stay-cation” at Paradise Point with our tax return last year, as we have always admired this beautiful property and wanted to stay there at least once in our lives. It’s a huge resort right on the bay in close proximity to Sea World (and approx. 1 ½-2 hours from Disneyland). There is an onsite spa, along with excellent restaurants, numerous swimming pools, lush gardens and ponds (with the ducks!) a beach, bike rentals, kayaking/boating/jet skiing and a mini golf course all on the property. The rooms start at HUNDREDS (to $1000+ for a suite) per NIGHT…JUST the rooms without any of the amenities included (everything costs extra). We had a fantastic time during our trip, so I don’t blame Mady for wanting to go back because my family would love to go back too! Because I am an RN, I do make a good living but certainly not enough to take my family to Paradise Point multiple times a year (or even in a lifetime). How wonderful that Kate of the Golden Uterus enjoys life for free and without conscience and is not limited to the “mundane” responsibilities/bills of being a REAL working Mom.

They are not showing these shows in order. I think last weeks show was TLC's urgent need to pacify the audience because of the huge media blitz. I believe that even though they were very civil in this week's show, they were going through turbulent times off camera. Kate has wanted out of this marriage for a very long time, remember the end of last season's cliff hanger...she said they had some ironing out to do...

It looks like TLC is really looking hard to find something to film. How many times have we seen Kate at the spa? And to take an 8 yr. old....a bit young I would say. By the time she becomes an adult she will be so sick of the "SPA" .... I bet this trip was to sugar coat Mady so that she will let TLC continue to film so many precious moments of her life.

I wonder why Kate wasn't filmed in her bikini during the beach scene? Oh that is for upcoming episodes...A day in Kate's life with personal trainer and bikini! Cheek to cheek....LOL

I have never seen a person so obsessed with the "SPA". I read somewhere that early on when they started to get donations from their church, she would take money once a month and treat herself to the spa. She felt that she was entitled to this luxury at other people's expense. Who would of thought that her spa treatments would be televised on "prime time tv". This is almost as popular as the super bowl! snicker, snicker :-(

You know what is really sad. These kids will have tapes of these shows to look at for the rest of their lives. They get to see Kate smear their father over and over again. And they get to see her attitude build, as does the wealth and the greed. (And god only knows what the heck goes on behind the cameras). They will see that the children really annoyed her, and that she would order anyone (father, nannies, free help) to take care of them. This is so damaging to these poor kids. So very, very sad!

I guess it's possible that Mady wanted to go there - my 9 year old daughter is crazy about whales and dolphins. We have been to Sea World in FL, and we have often discussed how great it would be to visit the other Sea Worlds in CA & TX. Also, my daughter enjoys girly stuff like nail painting etc, so I can see her getting into a spa day (so far, she's only gotten mani-pedi's from me!) That said, my daughter really just wants to spend time with ME, her mom, and jumps at the chance to go to the supermarket, Target or the dry-cleaners, for crying out loud!
I guess if I could get someone to give me a free trip to San Diego, sure I'd take her there. Otherwise, I think a Hannah Montana movie and dinner at the Olive Garden would be just as special.

Josie said...

not jumping the fence or anything, but I took my daughter to have her first manicure and pedicure when she was 5 for a birthday present and by 8 she probably WOULD HAVE CHOSEN a couple of days at a spa if I could have afforded it...I created a monster..lol

jes said...

Actually, when they were talking about the trip, Kate mentioned that they were there for 4 days but the crew only filmed for one day. When they mentioned all of the things they were going to be doing, SeaWorld was definitely on the list.
It's hard to tell who chose the trip but I doubt Mady had any problems with it since they had just been to San Diego a couple of months before.

I definitely don't like that the episodes are out of order now. It makes it hard to keep up.

"How many times have we seen Kate at the spa? And to take an 8 yr. old....a bit young I would say. By the time she becomes an adult she will be so sick of the "SPA" ...."

I would have to disagree. I was watching The Doctors yesterday and they brought up a spa for kids and it's called Spa Di Da. Now...the 6 month olds they claim to get are extreme....a 6 month baby doesn't need spa treatment. But Mady, 1st of all is around 7 other children. And Second, it's quality time with her mother, no matter how much we hate her, it's her mother, and she DOES enjoy her mother's presence. And like we all have growing up, have despised our parents as well. I think if you have the money for it, going to the spa with your adolescent child is something that will NEVER get old, you can do it while you two are 50 and 30 yrs old, and something that you could miss doing with that person who raised you your whole life...

Moving on, I think this episode was made before the hour long one, though I'm sure, not before the first magazine opened the gates to hell. But probably close. I honestly cannot tell you if these people are happy or not...

I was happy though, to hear everything that went wrong while Kate was away. If Kate was home, they would all be tied down with bubble wrap, they would not have made to the woods where Alexis cut her lip, the toilet would not have been broken, and...whatever else happened!

Let me clarify my meaning of spa...If it means a pedicure and manicure, I think that is great, I do it with my kids....BUT, if it means a massage, etc., then I do have issues with that. There are so many other healthy things that a mother and daughter can do. Do you think other kids at her age can relate to that. I highly doubt it?

Despite the media catching on to the exploitation issue, the ratings were still high this week.

Not as high as the seasons opener but higher than the last episode of the previous season. (This week's back-to-back episodes drew 5.5 million and 5.9 million.)

The problem with all media coverage about "mean Kate" is that continues to keep people interested in the show and keeps ratings high.

This looks like it was taped around the same time as the Emeril episode, before the last episode of Season 4 was even aired. Jon & Kate are so relaxed with each other - things between them MUST have fallen apart during the book tour. Sad.

And out of 4 days at the "spa" and sea world - with a 8 year old - no sea world clips at all?

The ONLY spa film you see is them walking in and closing the door on the public - as if "ha ha we get to go in but you don't" and the scene with the pedicures.

Oh lest we forget the salmon and salad private lunch with kate and her napkin and pinky sticking out? did she really do that - and dab her mouth so southernly gentling with her napkin?

And what was mady eating? looked like some kind of soup or chili?

And on the beach - sitting on that chair oozing of motherly love - mady looked totally bored - always fun to play on the beach by yourself, no other kids and no mom helping.

I totally agree - this back peddling with episodes and poor cut/paste/editing is showing very clearly they are scrambling.

Especially when simultaneously the tabloids are again showing the family at a beach resort. They should have move to the beach instead of their priviate 30+ acre 'farm"

concerned wife and mommy said...

Hmmm... I came away from this episode with a different reaction.

I thought Jon seemed so much calmer without Kate around. The kids were calmer and there were no meltdowns, just normal kids' behavior. I thought Cara was really sweet giving the little kids rides in the car and explaining why she was taking one of the boys around again.

Kate, well.... she kept talking about how she was letting Mady pick and it was all about her. But when they were on the beach, she was just sitting in the chair while Mady was playing at her feet. She also mentioned Mady burying her feet - which means she would have had to be sitting then also. Why can't she just get down on the sand and actually play with her, rather than just allowing her to play in her presence.

She also drives me nuts with the constant interacting with the camera. She spends so much time talking to the camera about what is going on that she does not experience it. She talks about her life rather than live it! On the opposite end, it seems like Jon is trying to ignore them as much as possible. Maybe he is starting to think about the effect this is having on his kids? Gosh, I hope so.

Kate also mentioned about how her kids were growing up and would be gone before she knew it. I have adult kids and I know how true that is. So, why not spend time with them on the day to day stuff. I am not saying you can never go on vacation or anything like that, but how come she has to wait for the BIG things rather than also enjoying the daily, more mundane things. Yeah, I know - Kate has lost sight of that a long time ago. But it is just a shame. I'm not even talking about the travel, although I think she is doing it too much. But, for goodness sake, when she is home, is it too much to expect that she would actually interact with her children on their level? You know, playing with toys and all those things may not be high on a parent's list of fun things to do, but when you do it with your child, it IS fun, because you are spending time with someone you love. It's the person you are with that makes it fun, not the activity.

One thing that I noticed really interesting that I'm surprised wasn't touched upon in the recaps:
They admitted that when one parent is away, they don't call each other. Kate mentioned that it scared her when she got a call from Jon because they, as Jon said "don't call"
Kate said it better as "No news is good news."

I take this to mean that while Kate is away on her book tour or while Jon is taking his vacations, they don't talk to each other and the parent away doesn't talk to the kids.
No wonder their marriage is falling apart.

Nice KATE won't sell a thing. But, maybe it will get the kids off the air, which is what we all want.

Does anyone remember back when J&K&8 was in San Diego together that there were a few times that Mady was not part of the outings because she was "being difficult" and Kate said they decided that she not be included because her behaviour would ruin the fun for the other kid's. I think that Mady probably did not want to have the cameras filming their outings and was being very outspoken of her dislike of the intrusion. Just have a feeling that somewhere down the line, when she's older Mady is going to be the most vocal about how this TV show has hurt the kid's lives. Some people have called Mady a brat but I really think that she is the barometer to watch to see how damaged this family really is...when she acts out so fiercely I think that those are the times that the State of PA should pay attention to the stress this show has created for the children.

Wondering said...

Thank you for the recap since I DID NOT WATCH! To be honest, I cannot for the life of me figure out why anyone would want to watch this boring no-talent drivel (other than the person doing the recap) but that's just me. I don't mean to offend anyone who is sticking by them by watching -- to each his own. I'd rather watch my cat bathe herself. Or paint dry. Or my fingernails grow. Or that cute little bald spot on my husband's head.

Not A Fan said...

Honestly, I'm a little surprised at how I've been sucked into the tabloid fodder of Jon & Kate - since I was never a big fan of the show. I immediately found Kate to seem faux and grating and the kids were never all that cute to me. TV for me is an escapist pleasure and hearing kids screaming is not escaping from reality for me. :-)

A couple of thoughts, and I'm addressing both episodes because they've kind of run together into one in my head.

This marriage is over. I imagine that it has been for awhile and because they knew Jon living someplace else would be noticed, they chose to keep him living in the new house and yes, he's probably sleeping in separate quarters. They probably realized that with Kate's travel schedule, they could arrange it that they could effectively be living in the same house but yet probably rarely, if ever, have to cross paths.

They crossed their fingers and hoped that it wouldn't be too noticeable to viewers that Jon and Kate are really not spending any of their time together. They are using the convenient excuse of conflicting travel schedules - but honestly, Jon could have easily chosen a different weekend to go skiing in Utah instead of the weekend of his wife's birthday. If your SO had been traveling and away from you, would you want to spend their actual birthday with them? Instead, he was in Utah canoodling with his new GF. I think the producers knew that it would look odd for him to be absent that weekend and scrambled to try to find some flimsy excuse and so the set up the run with the disabled kid ski on slopes.

I think that all of this was agreed upon by the 2 of them before they started shooting Season 5. They agreed to shoot the couch interviews together but otherwise, they didn't need to appear on camera together at all. Jon has his life and Kate has hers and the kids can be taken care of by the help or when needed for the filming, by one of the parents. I think they very well knew that they needed to come to some sort of an agreement to salvage this season, keep up some sort of an appearance that they were still together so as not to miss out on the $2M they could get for shooting Season 5.

I really don't think they were crafty enough to think about the tabloids finding Jon out with another woman. And as much as some have speculated that this was a publicity stunt to drum up ratings for the new season, I really don't think that it was. While they live in a small town where paparazzi aren't know to hang out, word gets around and they are the most well respected couple in Reading to begin with. Easy enough for someone to alert the paps and get the pics and to have start off this tabloid frenzy that continues today.

My speculation on the trip to San Diego was that it conveniently fit into Kate's book signing travel schedule. She was able to take Mady to the spa, get her own free vaca out of it and then Mady probably traveled back to PA with the nanny while Kate went to the LA area to do her book signing. Remember how Kate said that Mady was so well-behaved on the flight back. I think that was what was reported to Kate and not something that Kate saw for herself.

And I do think that the Kate Birthday episode was supposed to launch the new season (although I can't understand going to Ace of Cakes which is filmed for a competing network)because there was so much PR messaging from Kate of "I love my fans", "This is my job", yada yada that felt very scripted, although the real Kate came out at the bakery when she snarked "oh, gosh, now I'm acting like a fan!" to Duff.

But, once the tabloids hit, I think that they realized that they needed something to run with that felt more "family" to the viewers and went with the sextuplets birthday party instead.

Now, let's see if more bikini pics of Kate will come out today on Just Jared. :-)

Hey, I am all for his happiness! Just wish it didn't involve adultry. Not good.

Please, don't get the cart before the horse. It is plain WRONG!

She is utterly uncomfortable in most situations, so she over-reacts as "silly."

When my boys invite someone over, I always make sure the "invitor" son gets to play some on his own with his friend.

AS A KINDERGARTEN TEACHER- THESE KIDS NEED TO BE SEPARATED IN SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

..........................

Hilarious!! Though it was filmed long ago, it is so worth watching. Octomom so obviously despises Kate.

Who is calling out who? I sure would like to see those two face to face!

Though Octomom is truly a loon, she gave some relevant comments concerning The Queen of Mean.

For all the sleeze TLC presents, how in the heck could they pass up the Octomom?

To the Professor...LOVED YOUR RECAP! You so called it on Alexis and the spin-off. As she has grown, my fear has been that her parents might try to push her into an acting career. She clearly has the charisma and personality. I just hope it doesn't happen.

Thanks for the recaps - you save me the trouble of having to watch. I see that the general viewing public agreed with your assessment of how boring the episodes were since the ratings are dropping with each episode:
Season premiere - 9.8 million
June 1st episodes - 5.9 & 5.5
I realize that TLC is probably still doing a happy dance because the ratings are still better than they used to be, but shouldn't they be worried that the ratings dropped by 0.4 from one episode to the next - shoudn't that tell them that people are already getting bored.

I think the gosselins would be the unlucky ones! They would finally see what it's like to have a real, loving, caring, attentive mother and then Kate would come back and the kids will finally realize what they've been missing all this time... Have you ever seen an episode of wife swap where the kids cry when their fake mom leaves beacuse they like her better than their real mom? That would be the poor Gosselin children :(

Much as I love reading and posting here I wonder HOW LONG it's going to be before this show is scheduled for cancellation. Pending investigations didn't do it. Marital problems aired for the world to see didn't do it. Family members speaking out didn't do it. Do they have some sort of MAFIA connection!?!? Pull the dang plug already! Ugh!

If I see her in one more bikini....

When will people wise up to the fact that this woman is using her children to support their greedy lifestyle and have not given back to their community, the people who were ready to lend a hand at the very start.

Kate is a disgusting immoral and unethical beast of a woman.

One day, her kids will realize their mother put them second to her.(I hope she realizes the error of her ways and tries to change before that happens..but...)

That will be her payback.

We won't be there to witness it, this blog won't be there to record it but at this point, that's my only consolation.

They're not going anywhere. I hate to say it, trust me, but it looks like they'll be around a loooooong time. =(

I agree with both of you. I was disgusted (I just love pointing out everything she does wrong. :D) at how she replied. Me being a sensitive person would have found that comment offensive. She rolled her eyes and moved her hands in a way that said: "DUH!" The only I ask my mom if she's happy is if I think she IS unhappy, or I just bought her something, or in Mady & Mom's case, are on vacation, and I expect a straight answer. Shame. Luckily Mady isn't as sensitive as me!

Unfortunately WomanMother - I have to agree with you. I don't think this is going anywhere - anytime soon.

No matter how many are out there wanting to make it stop for the kids - there are just too many gossip-hungry, celebrity followers out there. They are in tabloid fever lately.

What an awful way to have to end this - when it does end though.....sad. They so could have taken the high road 6 months ago.

WomanMother: I think it makes sense that the show hasn't been canceled yet. TLC is not going to cancel this show until the ratings tank - which I think is going to happen, just not instantly. They already lost tons of viewers from last week to this week, and then they lost more viewers from the first episode of this week to the second. I think as time goes on they're going to lose even more, it's just going to happen very slowly. The people who used to watch the show because it was feel-good TV are going to tune out because of the awkwardness and the new people who are tuning in to see a trainwreck are going to get bored after a few weeks when they see that the show is determined to tone down the trainwreck quality - and the ratings will continue to slowly dwindle.

just read "we were 5" by the Dionnes said...

Kate was so mean to Maddy when they were eating lunch-making the waitress help push her chair in and put her napkin in her lap and then saying "UH the way 8 year olds eat" so loudly. I swear by the time Kate is done chipping away at that girl she will have nothing left of her self esteem. These are the moments from childhood that kids never forget, these are the memories that Kate makes out of her own inherent meanness. You could just see Maddy twisting inside to be belittled like that in front of all those people (waitress, producer, camera person, sound man, boom operator, production assistants). Lest we forget that none of these moments we see are ever really just between the parents and the children. I hate to think too, that with Jon not around to bear the brunt of her spew that she will focus more unkindness on the rest of the family. It's like she just has to get it out. To me, the most heart breaking is when Kate laughs at Maddy's bad behavior, mean talking on the couch, jumping up from pictures all sassy at the birthday party, never thinking that it is her responsibility to address it and help Maddy find another way. Even just letting Maddy know that the things she says and does hurt her feelings or make her sad. Kate is so dishonest in her parenting of her imo. I think Kate is always worried about how she appears in front of those damn cameras so she abdicates real mothering, compassion, and vulnerability. How long has this stupid show been on and have we ever really seen her give a giant hug to either Cara or Maddy when they need it most, maybe when they are at their most unhuggable? It is just too sad.

Aunt Chris said...

How would Kate expect her children to eat with the example she gives them, waiving her fork around, stuffing salad into her mouth and talking with food in it while she shoos them away? Plus if you don't take time to teach kids how to eat without a bib and using a regular cup they will be sloppy, dear. I guess she doesn't think you need to show kids stuff, they should just know things by certain ages. I'm convinced that the Not-a-Nanny is responsible for the tups better speech, the few scenes without bibs and the better treatment of each other that I have seen in the last couple of episodes. Hopefully Aaden will soon recognize an ear of corn, Hannah might drop the snotty attitude (although that might be genetic!) and Alexis will tone down the screaming bit, among other more acceptable behaviours they don't display, through no fault of their own.

Terri said...

I think it is pretty nerve-y of Kate to be snarky with Mady during lunch. Poor kid!

It killed me to see Kate ridiculing Mady on eating "like an 8 year old."

Alright Kate, how many eight-year-olds still have meals largely assembled of crackers, cheese, yogurt, grapes, and carrots??? Cripes, lucky for Mady she knows how to hold (let alone recognize) a fork and knife!

As for the napkin sniping, maybe if Kate gave her kids napkins instead of freaking bibs, they would know that you put your napkin on your lap!

And on the pushing in her chair.... How heavy do you think that thing was, how uneven was the patio?? Helloooooo, Mady is only eight how strong is she? Maybe a little help was in order. Besides, How long before the tups learn to push in their chairs??? Pretty hard to learn to do that when your feet don't reach the floor from your perch on your highchairs.

As for "Miss Pinky-in-the-Air" she was just trying to make sure her perfect manicure didn't get trashed. Also meant that more hired help could manage her child while she looked out for number one.

One more rant, why was Ms. Thang in a bathrobe and Mady was fully dressed?? Off for more spa bliss while your daughter hangs with the help?

ARGH!!!

anotherthing... said...

the "...im at a spa arent i?" reply is repulsive. and mady will most likely remember that forever.

kids are like sponges. kate says the most horrible things to them (or to the camera with them within earshot).... and kids also pick up 'vibes' from their parents.

i had wonderful parents. but i still remember some of the harsher things that were said... and it still stings... im 26!!!!!

i cant imagine what its like for those kids.... as ive said before... can you imagine the unedited footage... or what is not taped...???? she is a monster.

i didnt watch. loved the recap tho!!!

and a few others have said what i think too... that the kids have always (back when i watched) seemed more at ease with jon. b/c they can be themselves, maybe?

and with kate, they feel the empty/miserable/b****y vibe oozing out of her the way we see it in her fake laugh and the 'can-you-believe-what-im-getting-away-with' gleam in her eyes.

just a thought.

I've always been a fan of the show, until recently.

I did record this episode, but fast forwarded through most of it. I was questiong Mady wanting to go to San Diego to visit a spa, but I think she just wanted to visit her duck friends. I thought Kate's response to Mady picking out a stuffed animal for Cara was very sad. How about encouraging thoughtful behavior? Nah. It was also pretty sad when Mady asked Kate if she was happy. It was pretty obvious she just wanted to please her mother and make sure she was happy.

I wish the best for these kids.

ScarySkierNewJersey said...

I was clicking through the channels looking for my Phillies and I saw the end of the spa episode and Kate is saying that leaving for San Diego Mady was asking why "daddy couldn't come" or something of that nature and buy the end of the trip Mady was saying "kate is the best mom ever." WTF????? Who praises themselves that way? She than went on about the love cup and how Madys was "overflowing". What an ego. From what I am reading Kate was her usualy snippy and picky self at poor Mady.

Excellent recap Prof. It gave me a few good laughs!

Sunset said...

I can also see the negative influence Kate is having on her kids. Her pushiness and spoiled entitled attitude is sadly magnified in some of them. Hannah especially. During the birthday episode, while blowing out the candles, Alexis blew one more time after the rest had finished (lol) and Hannah gave her "The Look" and then moved her shoulder upwards in a gesture as if to say, mommy please scold her for that! Only I got by with things like that, not Alexis.

In this episode during the broken toilet tank confessional from Jon, Kate LOUDLY, ABRASIVELY SCREAMED at Jon by saying, "YOU DIDN'T TELL ME THAT"!!!!! And Mady whipped her head around to face Jon and said, "ME EITHER"!! Wow, just wow. Mady was mirroring Kate's actions/personality once again.

And when Kate was telling the part about Mady missing Jon, she mimicked Mady's voice (SPOOKY STUFF) as if she was making fun of Mady for it. Sick! Then, I could not believe what I was hearing when Kate was ranting on about herself being the best mom ever. It was so tacky and classless, and was only said so the viewers would somehow believe it was true. It backfired, Kate.

Pony said...

I think that in the long run, Mady will be fine. She strikes me as a smart girl who knows she has to stand up for herself; she does it now and will continue to do so in the future. As she gets older, she'll find better ways to let Kate know how she feels. I can just imagine the eye-rolling that she'll be doing at age 11. :)

She also shows a lot of empathy for younger children. I think Mady is the type of child psychologists call "resilient" - the ones that find mentors, etc. when their parents are less than ideal. The sad thing is that Kate will never understand why Mady has a closer relationship with Aunt Jodie or a teacher or coach than with her. "But I did everything for her!" she'll wail.

Like Sunset said, the kids are mirroring their mother's behavior more. Did you see Mady put her hand up in her mom's face when Kate interrupted & corrected some statement Jon was making about the dogs running after anything with wheels? Jon actually said "Ignore (what Kate said)..." and continued while Mady rolled her eyes at her mom's intrusion. Is snark inherited or learned?

OK safety experts, please comment on the kids car that they use all the time and Daddy's ATV. I think Kate said something like "Totally normal" referring to Cara giving the younger siblings rides. At least I saw ski helmets in a clip from the slopes when he took Cara to Utah.

Jon is out tracking deer on an ATV but walking the same path with the kids is too noisy?? Where did he get a stealth ATV? There are also photos of the Chopper episode where they opted to ride without helmets. So this flagrant disregard for simple safety is all for the kids? And in this episode the parents whine in unison about how dangerous it was for the 5 year olds to be walking with their hands in their pockets?!

One of the many reasons I quit watching the show was Kate's constant monologue about--- Kate! Basically telling us what a great Mother, housekeeper, organizer etc she was.

Now it's even worse. Like "See! Good mother! Watch this! Great Mom!" Yadda yadda.

To parallel with Mrs. Duggar who talks about--- her kids, their lives, their home. You can see she's a good Mom, why should she have to tell you.

I don't believe that Mady would have suggested San Diego as a place to go. Why not New York? Why so far away? A child that age might have said "disneyland" or something really fun - not a resort in San Diego, unless it had something to do with a pre-planned trip Khate already had scheduled and this was all staged. It was so sad when Mady asked her mom, as they sat in the spa in their robes getting their pedicures, "are you happy?" and Khate replied "am I in a spa". Not I am so happy to be spending time with you, etc. The poor kid probably went along with it just to please her mother. What else could she ask for that her mother would actually go along with.

I think there is something up with the whole Steve thing. Can't figure out what it is. Maybe mainstream media should go and interview Mrs. N and get her honest opinion on this whole deal. I read that Jon suspected an affair but said Steve was undercontract and couldn't get rid of him. Also, I have never heard about the personal trainer that everyone speculated that Khate was getting too close to. His name, where he worked, etc. has never been mentioned. I wonder why and maybe having Steve on all these trips focuses the attention somewhere else.

I'd love to see someone get a story from him. Follow him like they did with Deanna.

"another site" mentioned they contacted Charm City Cakes and told them to expect a lot of hate emails from this group. They were thankful for the warning and said they had only received a few. That made the three people that post from there very happy.

I still have images of Mady kicking the children at Aunt Jodi's. I still see Mady hitting a tup hard and then realizing she was being filmed. Part of the reason I don't watch is because Mady's behavior to the younger children makes me ill! Mady desperately needs discipline as do all those children. She should not be given a free pass because her parents are clueless. She knows what she is doing and is an attention grabber just like her mother. + + + + +

If there is any one marker at how bad the family dynamic is with the Gosselins, Maddy is the prime example. I'm not cutting her slack, but the issue isn't lack of discipline, it's lack of respect and affection.

She's been labeled the 'bad kid' by her mother within earshot, all her faults and ugliness discussed on TV in front of her.

The girl is PISSED about her life! I don't blame her one bit.

Juvie psych units have lots of Maddys--- Usually though, they're kids who have been abandoned by their parents or totally ignored & neglected. Ironic ain't it?

I'm not so sure Mady will be "fine." Kate has decided Mady is the "bad twin" and says so on national TV. Not only does the poor girl have to compete with six younger siblings for attention, her own twin is the golden child. Girlfriend can't catach a break and those emotional wounds won't go anywhere overnight.

Oh you mean Mady got to choose the trip? I figured that she must have won a meet and greet spa day with Kate from Good Housekeeping, or Oprah or something. I mean, it's such a rare day we see her with her kids, I didn't think she ever spent time with them willingly...

I didn't watch, but while flipping through channels I stopped on a repeat this episode for about 30 seconds. I was perplexed that a "stay at home mom" didn't know that the dogs go down the slide, and that Jon and Mady had to tell her about it. Considering 5 year olds and 8 year olds typically tell there parents *everything* this made me sad. She has no clue what is going on at home....

Oh Recto-Mom, you wanted children so badly, then you got them-- in abundance. Now you can't even be bothered to spend "mundane" moments with them. They are great little accessories though when it's convenient for you, aren't they?

I just watched the movie Cheaper by the Dozen...and it was truly eerie. In fact...Jon and Kate Gosselin if you're out there..You need to get this movie and watch it together and UNDERSTAND ITS MEANING. The similarities are spooky. Does TLC really think it can continue on this fake path of "fake family-ism?" I don't think so. Would it be wise to spin-off a show with just Kate hoping the fans at this point would just forget all her ugliness toward Jon and think of her as a role model for good motherhood? I don't think so. It would seem to me that this reality show...is finally getting a dose of reality. American public 1: Gosselins 0. Fortunately, kids are resilient. Hopefully, if the crap hits the fan now and they cut their losses...the kids might actually grow up to be normal kids who don't think they were put on a pedestal and deserve everything that was handed to them for no reason other than they were born. They might actually grow up to be normal, happy adults who will work for a living and maybe...just maybe...they will be important enough to their parents for them to finally realize how selfish and self-serving they have been. TLC needs to cut the show...The Gosselins need to get a grip.

Well, not sure Professor...... I didn't approve of your comments on Jon, especially the dial-tone reference. I see him as a calm and steady influence on his kids. Thank God they have such an involved dad considering who they have for their mom!

Agreed. I thought you were kinda harsh on Jon, and even a wee bit on Kate. :\ And man, does it feel weird saying that! I won't feel that way in a second though...

I suppose it was obvious, but did anyone else notice how greatly Mady mimicked Kate? On that couch. Wow. I wouldn't doubt that it happens often with young girls and their mothers, but still. To see a young girl imitate that ugly behavior was kinda sad. :[ I think it might just be Mady trying on behavior Kate finds acceptable, to maybe garner a little bit more attention and acceptance from her mother. Who knows.

And I was horrified when Kate dissed Mady's choice for Cara. Mady was SO happy with it. SHE even brought it up, I think. "Did you see what I got for Cara?!" and Kate was just like, "A stuffed animal. Most worthless gift. Ever" What a bitch. Seriously. :| The way that women acts is just disgusting. I really just want to slap her.

I was really impressed with Cara, too. The way she tried to explain to Aaden (if I remember correctly) that the other boy hadn't gotten a real ride in the little cart, and that's why she was giving him another. She was so rational and calm, and nice. Good for her. :] And for the other kids.

I think it's true. Kate's afraid of being a real mom, because of how it can appear to others. But god. Could it be any worse than how she's appearing now?

Ugh. This show just needs to end. I always hoped it would end before the tups started kindergarten. Let's hope so.

Been working on timeline... Very interesting. There is a chunk of time from early April (Smithsonian visit) until 4/14 when Kate's book tour started in CA that she could have gone with Mady to CA. This would have been right after Jon is in Utah with Deanna and misses Kate's birthday - so all is not well. All would have been really not well at Smithsonian - wonder if we'll ever see that footage? Would be interesting.

It is only 100 miles to Glendora, CA (where tour started)from San Diego. So, Mady could have flown back with crew and Steve and Kate stayed on in CA.

I have a feeling that the Boobs and Thighs were done on this 4 day jaunt to Southern California. That's why they're not showing the other days. Probably shipped Mady back and "went to the Dr." I can't see any other time that it could have been...

They can sit there and say that they are doing this for the kids all that they want to but, really, spa trips are for the kids. One has to wonder where all of their money is going as it doesn't appear to be in the bank. Here is a quote from Entertainment Weekly that I have seen a lot:

KATE: No, I call this the house that Kate and Jon bought and we will pay for, for a long time. We've worked hard, just like everybody else. I wish TLC was paying for it, but that ain't happening. Our mortgage is large and hefty, and we have two mortgages, because we still can't sell the other house.

They have a large and hefty mortgage on the new house and still are paying on the old house. They aren't doing it for the kids, they are doing it to support a lifestyle that they can't afford. They may end up losing everything if they aren't careful.

With the beautiful pool they have out back, and 25 acres to run around on, why in the world does Kate keep dragging those poor kids all over the country? She'd have all the privacy she needs at home and the kids will be secure in their backyard. Do they need these trips every other month?

Re: Timeline--supposedly there was a "break" in filming just after the Holidays--Jan? Feb? It was rumored on the internet that Kate had a cosmetic "procedure" done during this time. So, who knows, the boob job could've been done then?
As for Mady choosing San Diego--maybe she didn't come up with it out of thin air--Kate probably had other reasons for needing to go to CA and San Diego was presented as a choice to Mady. There are spas closer to home, such as the Hershey Spa at the hotel--Mady and Kate could've had a wonderful time there--but obviously there were other reasons that Kate needed to be even further away from the rest of her family.
And was Jon really "chasing" his kids around with an ATV? Safety first Jon, you knucklehead! Every year, there are fatalities and serious injuries involving the careless use of ATVs.

So, I can admit that I never used to dislike Kate. Yes, yes, I was one of those people who'd say, "I'd be like that too if I had 8 kids" and "it was just unfair editing." But by the time the last season ended (and with the help of a 12-step program) I couldn't stand her and would yell at the tv if I didn't like the color shirt she was wearing.

Since I've become so cynical I've been lucky enough to have developed a Katespeak decoder in my head. So when she said "Since Cara went with Jon to Utah, Mady asked if she and I could go somewhere by ourselves," what I heard was "Since the sextuplets were born Mady has been asking for a trip alone without the other children. We didn't do that for about 5 years, but since we're running out of show ideas and the producers have been reading on the Internet that it was unfair for Cara to get her own trip, we decided that Mady should get her own trip as well."

And then when she said "Mady chose to go with me to San Diego," I heard, "Mady wanted to make sure that I, rather than a nanny, would take her on vacation, so she made sure to choose something that I would want to do."

Ok, not that I don't think that Kate had other motives... But this is the same spa that the family stopped and stayed at for 3 or 4 days last year on their way to Hawaii. It is actually possible that Maddy liked it there and wanted to go back. The spent a lot of time on the beach, went to the San Diego Zoo, etc.

Believe me, I'm not a Kate defender, but this is one case that Maddy actually may have chosen.

JON is on Perez.com again!
Hey, buddy! You're going to need a new shovel if you keep digging deeper and deeper into this hole of yours.

Jon Gosselin can't seem to comprehend that all of America is watching his every move and insists on hanging out with other women while his wife is away. And now, the National Enquirer has video footage!

While his wife Kate Gosselin and his eight children are vacationing in North Carolina, Jon had been enjoying the company of his "friends" like 23-year-old Hailey Glassman, daughter of the plastic surgeon who performed Kate's tummy-tuck surgery.

What is it with this guy and 23-year-old girls?

The pair were seen having a secret "date" at bar in Nyack, NY. An eyewitness noticed that the young woman was "hanging on every word he said, and looked really happy to be with him."

Surveillance cameras at the restaurant caught Jon arriving, talking, and then abandoning his young blonde companion when he spotted a photographer. He quickly left her by fleeing through the back door. While Jon has publicly denied he's romantically involved with Hailey or anyone else for that matter, a friend of Hailey's confirmed she's been secretly meeting with Jon.

No need to meet in secret if nothing is going on!

We are really beginning to dislike Jon more and more. He better get his act together if he wants anyone in America to support him when he and Kate split.
LOOKS LIKE OPINIONS OF HIM ARE GOING DOWN.
JON-KEEP YOUR ASS AT HOME!

Very funny recap. I totally agree with you about Jon's monotone voice. I seriously doubt he would react if one of the kids burst into flames in front of him. If he's a father, I'm a monkey. Neither he nor Kate could parent their way out of a paper bag, but he has the added distinction of having cheated on his wife and children. Great parenting, Jon!

Regarding the comments about the public opinion of Jon turning sour...

I agree and would like to add that those girls are only after his money and the spotlight. Who in they're right mind would enter, so publically, into a relationship with this dysfunction? They have dollar signs and stars in their eyes and he's a fool to think they want him. Not to mention how easily seduced men can be by any girl who will tell him what he's not hearing at home...and these girls KNOW that!

Jon, if your reading this...wise up, dude. You are capable of rising up and doing what's right. Pray, pray, pray...don't walk away from your greatest blessings, a family. God can change this relationship w/ Kate and make it new and even better. Seek reconciliation, that's God's perfect will for you. He will bless your efforts. Set a good example to your children on how to carry yourself during trouble...they will remember your actions and repeat them as adults..make them COUNT!!!

Peace

Wasn't there an earlier episode where Kate was giving the older twins her version of a pedicure and Mady was freaking out? She wasn't enjoying it at all! I'm pretty sure Mady did not have the spa in mind but rather Sea World, if she did request a San Diego getaway at all.

Interesting......again can't remember where I saw it - but I swear I read something this week - about them having to put "3 miles of fence" around the property - due to the dogs chasing cars". Then it implied the could chase the cars inside the fence"

So - I bet that's what it is. My sister has that invisible fence for dogs.

Wow - can't even imagine what the cost of 3 miles worth would be. And they would definetly need the "invisible fence" - seeing they have a white picket-type fence already there - that won't keep out dogs.

Yes, but she seemed to enjoy it all getting ready for the wedding. It doesn't really matter if Maddy wanted to go to San Diego or not (I'm sorry I suggested it, it just seemed to me that she did actually like it, and I was happy to see her like something for a change) these kids should not be on TV.

He was carrying her purse at the Southern Woman's Show in PA -- around the first weekend in May. I believe Kate's #1 fan has a picture of it on her site

Here is what Histrionic means, I looked it up on Wikipedia,

excessive emotionality and attention-seeking, including an excessive need for approval and inappropriate seductiveness, usually beginning in early adulthood. These individuals are lively, dramatic, enthusiastic, and flirtatious. They may be inappropriately sexually provocative, express strong emotions with an impressionistic style, and be easily influenced by others.

Remember the first trip to the beach in an earlier episode? Kate got a severe sunburn. I heard recently that she now gets a spray tan twice a week. Were Kate and Maddi sitting in the shade on the beach? Kate had on a dress.

So what's up with the recent bikini pics in the ocean if she burns? Where is the modest swimsuit she used to wear? This is all about her at this point.

Except that Jon's are surely withered and dried up by now and can't weight too much at this point.

An earlier commentator stated that Kate interacts with the camera crew while filming by herself, when Jon's not present. I have noticed that she does this a lot, in a very animated, giddy and flirty way lately. I wonder if she is doing it for Mr. Gray's benefit?

Gotta say it...

How nice it was to not hear Kate berating Jon every few minutes!

It was sad to realize that in order for Kate to QUIT criticizing Jon, Jon had to be FAR AWAY from her!

Did anyone notice how frenetic Kate behaved when she was on the loveseat by Jon during interview sequences? It's like she changes into a different (negative) person anytime she's in the same room as him!

If I was Jon I would have left Kate a LONG TIME AGO!
