Just the Cash Please

The following e-mail is from one of the organizers of the Gosselin's speaking engagement at Ingells Avenue Baptist Church in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The Gosselins will be speaking there on June 1, 2008. Bold type has been added for emphasis.

It is obvious that the Gosselins are asking to have a love offering passed around for them AND are selling autographed pictures. Many people wonder why the Gosselins are asking for cash only....

Hi everyone!!I need a confirmation from everyone so that we can nail our reservation list this week! Email me your contact information and how many ticket that you need. (just in case they have increased or decreased). I need this back ASAP!! Cut and paste the below info. Also, Kate has told me that they will be selling autographed pictures for a fee of $20. They will only accept cash for these. As most of you know also, we will be taking a love offering for the Gosselins. This is going directly to them. They don't "charge" to come down, but do ask that we take up a love offering. So come prepared to "give back". Hope to see all of you soon!mary

What's going on here? Why ONLY Cash for the autographed photos? I hope they're planning on keeping track of how many are sold for IRS purposes. OR is that the purpose of only asking for cash because they don't plan to claim it? $20 seems a little steep for a picture too. Sigh...the greed continues.

Don't those postcard photo things only cost about $1 each when done in bulk? Maybe even less if you do themselves at home. So $19 profit for each sucker er fan who ponies up? Good work if you can get it. I hope they keep good records for their accountant to file with the IRS.

They probably ask for cash to avoid the hassle or necessity of a credit card machine. Items sold at any public appearance - speaking engagement, concert etc... are always overpriced. I don't see the big deal. If people want to buy he pics then they can. Big deal.

Yes, my boss just got some for her business. Hers were 3"x5", double-sided, and cost around .35 each when purchased in a lot of 1000. The MOST expensive ones run about .85 if 1000 are purchased. So including shipping and sharpies, the profit is right around $19.00 per pic, give or take.
I once got to meet Kurt Vonnegut. He signed my book for free AND thanked ME for taking the time to come hear him speak. (gulp). He made nowhere NEAR $19.00 on the book I bought, yet he was very grateful to ME for coming by and reading his books. Jon and Kate are nowhere NEAR Vonnegut level...

(And Sheeple: You know you know who Kurt Vonnegut was. Harrison Bergeron is required reading in most schools. And Slaughterhouse Five is in every college curriculum. Just because he never had a reality show doesn't mean he wasn't famous.)

You know, I am really into vintage advertising. Print ads, old commercials...I love it all.

Recently, I was perusing an amazing collection of old ads on Flickr when I stumbled on literally 50 examples of advertising featuring the Dionne Quintuplets.

Had they lived in these times, they most certainly would have had their lives exposed on a television program, complete with lingering close-ups on the Juicy Juice and the Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo in the tiny bottles.

The guy who "managed" the Dionne Quints played fast and loose with *their* earnings, too...remember, the Gosselin kids are not covered under the stuff like A Minor Consideration.
