Gosselin Facts

This blog is operated by a group of viewers of the TV show Jon & Kate Plus 8 who are interested in researching the information announced by TLC, Discovery, and Jon and Kate Gosselin and verifying it's accuracy and correlation to the show and Jon and Kate's speaking engagements. All statements included herein are the opinions of the posters and are solely to be interpreted as such.

Of particular concern is that people who make less money than the Gosselins hear them speak at churches talking about their poor times when the sextuplets were born and donate to them. What these people don't tend to realize is that the Gosselins get all or almost all the sextuplets clothes donated to them, get all kinds of other free help because of the TV show, and are paid quite handsomely for producing the TV show. In other words they have in the past and are now begging for money from people who have less than they do and have no compunction whatsoever about it. In Kate's own words: "Who am I to tell them no?" Well we don't think Kate should be asking in the first place.

They not only have a minimum charge and minimum number of people for church engagements, they now are selling cheap postcards of the family at inflated prices. They have a book coming out in the fall. What will they stoop to next to raise money from the unsuspecting? Why don't they get real jobs?

Kate is a vessel one would void into. She has no parenting skills, nor does Jon. Gimme, gimme, gimme is their motto.

I have a question, I hope I am asking in the correct place, on the TWoP J&K+8 thread (before it was closed), someone had mentioned J&K were to make 60,000 per episode for next season. Has that been found to be accurate? My husband and I calculated that to be 2.5 million if they did 40 episodes. We are shocked, but I am having a hard time believe that to be true. Do reality tv "stars" make that much money? And how is it they can claim their lives are so "exhausting" when they are being paid so much to pimp out their children?

Serena said...

No, that $60,000 quote was not accurate. Perhaps the poster inadverdently added a zero to the figure, because $5,000 to $6,000 is the more reasonable figure.

As far as the "exhausting" -- who knows. Kate has a full-time stay-at-home husband (he does not work from home, he just stays home). The twins are in school all day (although not at this time because of summer), the tups nap every day. Or at least are remanded to "quiet time" behind closed doors in their bedroom. She has sitters and nannies for the children every week... I think Kate is just exhausted being Kate and would have the same complaint even if they had stopped at two.

I also think the $60K per episode is much higher than what they actually get. The benefit for TLC or any other station to do a reality show in an existing home is that they're much cheaper than an actual sitcom kind of show where they have to pay each actor individually, pay for a set and location shots, pay for union labor, pay for wardrobes, etc.. TLC is loving the fact that the family gets so many freebies/product placements too - it means THEY don't have to, LOL! My family has worked in TV for years and believe me, even with the high ratings J & K + 8 gets, TLC isn't shelling out even close to $60K per episode to them. They would just find another "quirky" family to do a show and make them the next best thing on TV. Bottom line is it's about $$ for the station/channel - NOT the characters on a reality show.

Now with that said it doesn't mean J + K didn't have their management team and lawyers lobbying hard for more $ per episode each season. But while they are (supposedly) looking out for the welfare of their family in making sure they are covered, again TLC isn't interested one whit about that - they want to make the most $ possible per episode. Once the per episode amount starts cutting into the profits they made at season 1 and 2, well any Producer who wants to keep their job better get it back in line. ;-)

Well, it is their most popular show.
And the cast of the sitcom Friends got 1 million dollars each episode. So why wouldnt J&K get $65,000.00?

Because even if J&K+8 is TLC's highest rated show, it's still nowhere near as popular -- or making nowhere near the money -- as Friends. It's still not in the top 10 cable television programs, according to the Nielson company (http://www.nielsenmedia.com/nc/portal/site/Public/menuitem.43afce2fac27e890311ba0a347a062a0/?show=%2FFilters%2FPublic%2Ftop_tv_ratings%2Fcable_tv&selOneIndex=1&vgnextoid=9e4df9669fa14010VgnVCM100000880a260aRCRD). They're getting a lot of buzz right now (the publicist they hired is doing her job well), but they aren't the superstars they like to believe they are.

I really don't know if I can take much more of this show. I agree that they need to get real jobs and stop exploiting these children. They're being robbed of a normal childhood. Jon said in a recent episode that he would go to the ends of the earth for his kids. Nice sentiment but I just don't see it. Do they realize how much they're hurting them?

GCLA-glad you showed up here! I love the turmoil you caused on the Imperfect Parent site...way to go! That group is very strange, they will Never believe anything BAD about their beloved Gosselin's. Keep posting over there! Isn't grandma a crazy one. That woman preaches the gospel and then tells you to go to hell or play in traffic! What a hypocrit...and the fact she has COPD and still SMOKES....she is such a fake....Back on topic. Will you tell us what GCLA stands for? How can we join in? What can we do to help you?

Serena,
How do we know the price they are being paid?

I don't think 60k is out of the question, but if they are doing this for 5 grand a show...it ain't worth it. NO WAY!

I happen to watch the show. I don't think they are bad people. Anyone with eight kids would absolutely pull out their hair. Have you ever thought about what they are doing with the money they earn from the show? Maybe providing college funds for eight kids, putting aside a nest egg for themselves and their kids. Do you have eight kids? Do you have any idea what that must cost to not only provide for them and try and save for everyday expenses retirement, vacations, college funds, and kids activities. If they want to have their lives taped to show the world so what...it is their life not yours. If you don't like the show turn it off....that is why you have a remote control. I wish I had not come across this blog. Now that I have said my peace, I am going to take my own advice and leave the site.

I think they seem like wonderful people. They are raising their children, growing together, and making the same mistakes we've all made as young parents, but they are doing it in front of everyone to be judged or admired by people like you and I. I for one, admire them. They seem to be doing an amazing job.

I have very little to give to anyone finacially, but if I see a cause worthy, I will give all that I am able to because that is what brings happiness to my soul. That must be the reasoning of those that give everyday to different causes all over the world.

Thank you,

B. Thomas

Fiona,
I would totally still do the show at only $5k a piece. Even if they only do 20 episodes a year (which they do way more of) they get paid $100,000/year. With 8 kids that doesn't equate into much, but hey, I would take it.

In addition toi the money they also get their place in history. And let's face it, if you could be famous just for being you, wouldn't you love it? I wish my life was that interesting.

As to the comments that they're robbing their kids of their childhood. I wholeheartedly disagree. They have so much time to spend with their kids and can take them on more vacations than if they didn't have the show. They've got a great childhood, and one that they'll never forget b/c of the show.

Quit being haters!

To those who are so in awe of and inspired by J & K enlighten the rest of us as to what is so interesting about J & K that would make one feel so inadequate in comparison? Jon has no job. Kate does or claims to do the same day to day stay at home mom tasks that any other stay at home mom does and have been doing for generations over. Although, I would hardly compare Kate to the typical stay at home mom as Kate has her helpers, cleaners, nannies, laundry folders and is seen more times than not sitting on her butt. I hardly think J & K are history in the making and I have yet to be convinced that J & K have accomplished anything above and beyond extroidanary.

Please remember folks, or at least try to accept, we are not haters...whatever that means.

We care about the family...the kids. At least I know I do. Jon and Kate will end up learning their lesson the hard way...but maybe it won't have to be as hard as it could have been. They have most likely caused a huge strain with Jodi and Kevin, over money. Knowing Kate, that won't get better over time. Beth, probably close to the same. Yes, Jon and Kate CAN do whatever they choose. We are intent in keeping the public aware of the situation the kids work in. Yes, work, friends.

So, if they're constantly getting things donated to them, is that really their faults? Esp. since the only real "plug" on the show are Kate's "So Cool Mom" shirts and Juicy Juice and we all know Juicy Juice isn't shelling out millions.

You know, the more that comes to light about these sleazoids, the more I have to think they (Kate, really) will simply self-destruct. Bad karma is not pretty. I just hope that the kids do not suffer.

Eveytime I watch this show I have always wondered why the kids rooms are not decorated. Just blank walls with somewhat matching bed linens and a little window valance. You would think someone would of painted a neat mural or decorated thier rooms with a theme? Pictures, photos, something fun. The boys have one train/play table and the girls have a kitchen and few others play things. Are the boys not allowed to play wth the kitchen? Are the girls not allowed to play with the trains? I guess there rooms go along with the rest of the house. Just curious?

For those wondering about decorations and stuff in their rooms. What a lot of you all don't realize is EVERYTHING shown on tv has to be cleared. Got a picture from a flea market? The production staff has to research the painter, etc and see if they need a release.. a toy? a doll? Ugg its an ungodly process, and that's why you see very little decoration, art etc on walls in "reality" tv shows.

In response to everyone saying that they have 8 kids, and can you imagine how much money it takes to raise 8 kids. Well, I have 2 and I definately understand how expensive it is to raise kids. That's why I only had 2. If you can't take care of them, then why have them.

Yeah....they're doing an "amazing job" all right.
Really amazing. Wink, wink

I have been watching this show for months and months now. I was intrigued at first by the proposition of Kate being an excellent stay at home mom who was super organized, seemed to have things under control with 8 kids, etc. The more I watched the show the more I didn't want to see anymore. Spelling out that they have no college funds for the kids on national t.v. was very distasteful in my opinion. Flaunting the fact that they get freebies like clothing donations, free vacations, free tummy-tucks, hair plugs, whitenings, etc makes me sick to my stomach. I am not a jealous person nor do I care what anyone has or doesn't have. I am not materialistic by any means. My husband works at a modest job, we rent a modest house, we have two children - a 2 year old and a 10 month old. We work hard for what we have to provide the basic necessities and some luxury items here and there. I know that having 8 kids is different but I do not see it as an entitlement to feel like everyone owes you everything. Most people with large families work very hard to provide for them and still struggle with every day living. It's disheartening to me to watch a show where children are exploited, family members are taken for granted, and the two parents don't even work. They are not doing what is best and what is right for their children. I love how Kate says that they are a fertility nightmare then turns around and publishes a book called "Multiple Blessings". Kind of ironic don't ya think? I also love how she says that they are doing the best they can for their family but is in no way concerned how airing a show that steps inside of their lives, their children's lives and their very own home poses a danger to her children. Is she not worried about sickos, perverts, child molesters and stalkers who probably watch her show daily? I would hesitate to put either one of my children's photos or videos on youtube or similar websites for all the world to see, much less taping a regular national television show.
As far as people saying "I don't see how you do it." Here's your answer: They don't. Someone else does. There's always been someone else in the picture and it's painfully obvious it's a wonder people do not see past their charade. "Oh poor Kate has it so hard, she has little to no help, blah blah blah." Bull crap. There has always been Aunt Jodi, Nana Janet, Beth and the various other nannies, cleaning people, and other people who sacrifice their time to help her out - not to mention the actual production crew who I'm almost positive functions as another entire babysitting unit while they are there.
I'm honestly disgusted by the show now and will not watch another episode. I can not stand how Kate communicates to her husband and her children. I understand that at times it is stressful with 8 children but what are you teaching them about the proper way to communicate to the people you love? That its ok to be mean if you are stressed out? Its ok to degrade and belittle your husband and children because YOU can't get it together?
That's all I'm saying on this subject.
